NATURAL COLD FIGHTERS: WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'T Part 4 by the Physicians of the Doctors, Readers Digest, 11-2014
THE REMEDY Vitamin C DOES IT WORK? Maybe the most studied of the bunch, vitamin C falls short of the mark. In a 2013 review of 29 trials, it didn't reduce colds. Huge doses to ease symptoms had small effects in some but not all studies. DOWNSIDE? Expensive urine. The studies didn't find risks, although megadoses can cause stomach upset and possibly kidney stones if you are prone.
THE REMEDY Ginseng DOES IT WORK?Some trials have found that taking ginseng preventively shortened the duration of colds, but experts question how well the studies were done and worry about inconsistent results. DOWNSIDE? It's generally safe, but it might lower blood sugar (a concern for people with diabetes). In high doses it can cause headaches and insomnia.

WHY HOLIDAYS ARE HEALTHIER THAN YOU THINK from Reader's Digest 12/14
Cocoa Improves Your Heart Health This sweet treat lowers LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, raises HDL cholesterol and even improves cognitive function and memory. In 2012, the European Food Safety Authority (a group similar to our FDA) issued a scientific opinion that said consuming 200 mg of cocoa flavonoids a day can contribute to healthy blood flow. A cup made with a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa can contain or even exceed this amount. To minimize clumping, mix powder into milk that is already warm. Add spices like cinnamon and small amount of sugar or honey to cut the bitterness.
to be continued...

POISON ALERT!! - Oh my... no more MT DEW for anyone!

Are you a Mountain Dew addict? Then know what you're drinking! BVO is a toxic chemical that is banned in many countries because it competes with iodine for receptor sites in the body, which can lead to hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease, and cancer. The main ingredient, bromine, is a poisonous, corrosive chemical, linked to major organ system damage, birth defects, growth problems, schizophrenia, and hearing loss.
"There’s flame retardant in your Mountain Dew. That soda with the lime-green hue (and other citrus-flavored bubbly pops) won’t keep your insides fireproof, but it does contain brominated vegetable oil, a patented flame retardant for plastics that has been banned in foods throughout Europe and in Japan.
Brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, which acts as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored soda drinks, is found in about 10 percent of sodas sold in the U.S.

Pass The Butter ... Please.
This is interesting . .. .
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavourings....
DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!
Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .
And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease ...
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT.
These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
Open a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.
Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Don't waste time!! We have probably all heard that time is important when getting to a doctor when a stroke is suspected. Do you know how important?
A report on our evening news said that in each minute of a stroke 2 MILLION brain cells die.
A dear friend thought he was having a stroke, then drove home to "clean up" before going to the hospital! Whether it is you or someone you love, or a stranger for that matter, get medical attention as SOON as possible!

for your Dec. 21 post...WOO HOO! for butter!!
for your Jan. 3 post....very true about the ratio of time and brain damage during a stroke. In 2013, I left my mom at 11:00am to go shopping, when I arrived back at 12:30pm she was on the floor unable to move or speak. It was uncertain exactly how much time had passed from the onset of the stroke. The paramedics arrived shortly after. It was very important for us to try to figure down to the minute how long because it would determine the course of action and medicines to be given. There are some amazing meds that can be administered and some incredible recoveries that can be made. Unfortunately, my mom experienced extreme damage and passed away 2 months later. Her stroke was related to atrial fibrillation.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF SKIN CANCERfrom the Special Report supplement of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter, Feb 2015
Skin cancer is common in older adults. If you're 70 years olf, you're almost 20 times more likely to get it than someone who's 35 or 40... In addition to excessive sun exposure,(harder to avoid if you are working outside on a farm!) risk factors for skin cancer include a history of intense, blistering sunburns, fair skin - especially if you have freckles-blue or light-colored eyes, red of light-colored hair, multiple of abnormal moles, a personal or family history of skin cancer, and cigarette smoking. ...
You can use the ABCDE guide to recognize the signs of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.Consult a doctor if a mole or spot has these features. Asymmetry- one half unlike the other half Border - irregular or poorly defined border Color - variation in color from one area to the next, including shades of brown, black, and sometimes white, red or blue Diameter- Larger than the diameter of a pencil eraser ( about 6 millimeters) Evolving - Any change in size, shape, color, how raised it is (height), or signs and symptoms, such as bleeding, itching or tenderness. ... Stick to the BeetsGood Housekeeping Magazine, Feb. 2015
"The red roots could help keep your heart healthy, suggests a new Kansas State University study. Researchers have found that eating two to three medium-size beets (or drinking 16 oz. of beet juice) increases blood flow to muscles by 38%. A boost this big can lower high blood pressure and improve mobility in people with heart failure. Ad even if you don't have a pre-existing condition, adding beets to your daily diet may prevent future heart issues, researchers say."
The beets I have stored from our garden in sand are starting to leaf out, time to try to use them up! Have you tried borscht, the eastern European beet and cabbage soup? I have a great recipe if anyone is interested.

KEEP HAIR SHINY Woman's Day Magazine February 2015
The next time you boil rice, save the water-which is rich in vitamin B and antioxidants-to use as a shine treatment for aging, lackluster hair. "Jasmine rice has more starch and releases more active ingredients, but any rice will work," says New York clinical herbalist Jill Blakeway. After shampooing, pour the cooled water over your strands and massage in. Let it sit on your head for 5 minutes before rinsing clear.

Beets are very good for you. I tried growing them last year, no success. I'll try again this year. Beet juice cleans the liver and is great for de-toxing. And borscht is great, especially if you add a dollop of Greek yogurt to it. I love these tips, Susan. Cindy

HELP! AM I DESTINED TO... by Leslie Goldman, Woman's Day Magazine April 2012
In a word: no! Ease- and even prevent- some of the most common symptoms of aging with these simple strategies.
... you do have control over how your body ages. "Up to 75% of your health destiny is determined by our daily diet and lifestyle choices. Family history accounts for only about 20% to 25%." says Andrew Weil, MD, founder of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona Health Services Center. So eve though you'll likely experience some of these symptoms, there are ways you can fight back.
Am I destined to... LEAK WHEN I LAUGH? Laughing is fun. Peeing while you laugh definitely is not. The decline in estrogen weakens the muscles surrounding your bladder, but not all women are affected. 28% of women age 50 or younger and 35% of women older than 50 will experience leaking. Having had children and genetics also play a part. PREVENT IT. The tried-and-true Kegel exercises can really help. 3 sets of 8-12 Kegels, done 3 times daily for 4 to 6 months, helped decrease incontinence by up to 80%. This also holds promise for preventing it in the first place. To isolate and work the right muscles, imagine that you're urinating and try to stop the flow, then hold for 10 seconds. More strategies to consider trying: Magnesium supplements and dietary fiber may help in fighting constipation and relieving pressure in the pelvic area that can contribute to incontinence.

HELP! AM I DESTINED TO... Part 2 by Leslie Goldman, Woman's Day Magazine April 2012
In a word: no! Ease- and even prevent- some of the most common symptoms of aging with these simple strategies.
Am I destined to... HAVE ACHY, CREAKY JOINTS?
Joint pain and a feeling of "creakiness" can increase with age since the tissues around our joints stiffen, but "it isn't by any means 100% sure to happen, assures Patience H. White MD.... Every extra pound of weight you care is equivalent to carrying 4 pounds across your knees, so a 5-pound weight gain feels like 20 pounds to your lower joints. "People who are overweight and slim down can cut their pain in half," notes Dr. White. PREVENT IT ...the stronger you r muscles, the less likely you are to have pain. Strength training for 20 minutes at least twice a week is key. Stretching can relieve achiness, as will regular walking. Aim for 30 minutes, 5 times a week, at a rate fast enough to make you slightly out of breath. It's less of a strain to work out in small spurts throughout the week than to suddenly walk 5 miles on Saturday. Check with your MD if you experience redness, swelling and heat around a joint which may hint at arthritis.

We know that a variety of vegetables is important in our diet. Here is a change from the canned, frozen and root cellared staples so many of us depend on this time of year. Even with store bought vegetables it's good. But try it again in the summer with fresh garden produce
Edgar's Salad 1 cucumber, peeled and cut in chunks 1/4 cup chopped onion (red is good) 1/2 cup sliced black olives ( half of a 3.8 ounce can) 1 cup shredded lettuce Mix dressing 2 Tbls olive oil 1 Tbls balsamic vinegar 1 tsp tarragon
Toss vegetables in dressing.

INCREDIBLE NEWS STORY On our evening news on WCCO TV, Minnesota's CBS station, they told of research involving immunizations and cancer. 12 cancer patients were given a tetanus shot and it seemed to jump-start their immune response with their own body fighting the cancer in their bodies. People who had been told they had 6 months to live, lived for 2 to 5 years. One woman's cancer disappeared. I will try to find out more but this was absolutely amazing.

My father had COPD. Our kids hardly got to know the wonderful man. Please be aware of symptoms and treatments available. COPD Symptoms And Treatmentsfrom Commerce Topics.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a group of lung diseases that inhibit airflow to the lungs and make breathing difficult. The two most common conditions of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis, and people with COPD can have both conditions at the same time. In chronic bronchitis, the linings of the bronchial tubes become inflamed. Emphysema happens when the alveoli in the small air passages in the lungs are destroyed. Both of these conditions cause irreversible damage to the lungs, but getting treatment early on can control symptoms and prevent further damage from occurring.COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Millions of people have COPD and there are many more that have not been properly diagnosed yet. COPD develops slowly and will eventually limit how a person can perform their most basic activities. There is no known cure as of yet and doctors are not sure how to repair the damage that it causes to the airways and lungs. There are many treatment options available that will help with feeling better, staying active, and even slowing the progression of the disease. Unfortunately, many people who have COPD don't seek help until their symptoms become more severe. Catching COPD early on offers the best chance at successful treatment, so if you or someone you love experiences any of the early signs or symptoms of COPD, talk to a doctor right away. Since symptoms don't appear until lung damage has already occurred, treatment should begin immediately upon diagnosis of COPD.
The primary symptom of COPD is a chronic cough, defined as a cough that occurs for at least three months per year for two consecutive years. There are other symptoms that may indicate COPD, as well, including wheezing, tightness in the chest, shortness of breath (especially during physical activity), excess mucus in the lungs (especially in the morning), a blue tint to fingernail beds or lips, lack of energy, unexplained weight loss and frequent respiratory infections. COPD, when untreated, can result in several complications, such as respiratory infections, colds, flu, pneumonia, higher risk for lung cancer, depression, heart disease and high blood pressure. It is imperative that the individual with COPD have all the tests their doctor orders such as a pulmonary function tests, chest x-rays, CAT scans and arterial blood gases. This is the only way the doctor is able to make a definite diagnosis so treatment can begin.
Although there is no cure for COPD, numerous treatment options are available to help patients live longer, more comfortable lives. When COPD is detected during the earlier stages of the disease, medical treatments and healthy lifestyle changes can often prevent the significant loss of lung function for several years. That said, of the 24 million Americans believed to have COPD, only half have discussed their symptoms with a doctor. The remaining people are putting themselves at greater risk by not receiving immediate treatment. Early COPD treatment is usually simple and highly effective, consisting of bronchodilators and other medications prescribed by your doctor.
The most important step of COPD treatment is to quit smoking. People who smoke cigarettes are more at risk of COPD than any other demographic, especially after smoking heavily for a number of years. Quitting smoking can reduce your risk of developing the disease while also protecting you from life-threatening episodes of COPD exacerbation. Unfortunately, the addictive qualities of cigarettes make this a very hard habit to break. Talk to your doctor if you need assistance with quitting smoking for good.
People who smoke are also much more likely to develop COPD than people who don't. In addition, people who have been diagnosed with asthma also face a greater risk, as do people who are regularly exposed to airborne dusts and fumes through the course of their occupation. Family history is also believed to play a minor role in the development of COPD, although the risks associated with genetics pale in comparison to the risks associated with smoking. People who are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke also face higher risks about someday developing COPD.
One of the best things you can do when dealing with COPD is educate yourself about your condition, so you clearly understand what COPD is, how it might affect you, and what your treatment options are. Following your prescribed treatment plan carefully is also necessary in successfully treating your symptoms and preventing further lung damage. Oftentimes, this means asking questions, when necessary, to make sure you fully understand your treatment plan. Think of your physician as a teammate in battling the symptoms of COPD, and keep the lines of communication with your doctor open.

TOP TIPS FOR TIMING YOUR MEDICATIONfrom Health Connections flyer, Sterling Drugstore March 2015
"It's important to set your daily routine when taking medication. It can be helpful to connect taking the medication with normal activities such as eating a meal(if the medication is allowed with food) or going to bed. You can also keep back-up medication in your work-place, briefcase or purse to make it easier to stay on schedule.
Daily dosing container are available at your pharmacy. They allow you to keep medication in compartments that are labeled with the days of the week and various dosage frequencies. Keep a written of computerized schedule. List the medications you take, how often you take them and any special directions.
There are a number of devices that have been designed to help patients adhere to a prescribed medication schedule, including pagers, wristwatches, automatic pill dispensers and even voice-command medication managers. Ask your pharmacist for suggestions on what might work best for you."

A friend shared this on facebook and I'm passing it on to you. Adding this ingredient to your rice could cut calories in half ByJESSICA FIRGERCBS NEWSMarch 25, 2015, 12:11 PM It seems counter-intuitive, but new research finds adding a certain type of healthy fat to rice while it's cooking may actually cut the calories in this starchy, carb-laden food staple.
A cup of cooked rice typically contains 240 calories and is made up of both digestible and resistant types of starch. Humans do not have the enzyme to digest resistant starch, which means the body is unable to convert some of that starch to sugar and absorb it into the bloodstream.
Researchers at the College of Chemical Sciences in Sri Lanka successfully tested out their theory that using a specific heating and cooling process could increase the presence of resistant starch and thereby minimize the body's calorie absorption.
Here's how to cut the calories in your rice by more than half, according to the researchers: Add a teaspoon of coconut oil to boiling water, then add half a cup of rice. Simmer for 40 minutes or boil for 20 to 25 minutes. The cooked rice should then go into the refrigerator for 12 hours, which means you'll need to cook it ahead of time.
The researchers say this method causes the oil to enter in starch granules while it cooks and adds a protective layer, which ostensibly changes the structure of the rice granules so they becomes resistant to the digestive enzyme. Ultimately, this means that fewer calories from the rice are absorbed by the body.
Play VIDEO Health worries about arsenic in rice It turns out the cooking process is only part of this magic food chemistry experiment. During the extended cooling process, as the rice starts to "gel," the amylose -- the starchy part of the rice -- leaves the granules. The 12-hour cooling period also leads to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the the amylose and molecules outside the rice grains. This converts it into the starch the body is unable to digest.
Thankfully, you won't need to eat your rice cold and gummy to maintain its lower calorie content. The scientists say reheating the rice at a later time doesn't alter the rice's chemical composition. Additionally, the researchers say rice cooked this way won't only help a person maintain a trim waist; it may also result in a healthier gut, since the bacteria in the rice provides a potent energy source to the "good bacteria" in the human body.
These findings were presented at the 249th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society.
Next the researchers plan to conduct studies with humans to find out which varieties of rice work best for this calorie-reduction process, and whether it can also be done with other types of oils.

But a few seconds isn't enough; you need to do it for at least 10 to 20 minutes, says Jeffrey Pellegrino, PhD, of the American Red Cross.
