7 Dangerous First Aid Mistakes Part 3
by the Physicians of The Doctors, Readers' Digest, 04-15

3. Putting heat on a sprain or fracture.
"Always apply cold initially," says William Gluckman,DO, spokesman for the Urgent Care Association of America. Ice helps decrease swelling, where as heat boosts blood flow, which can make swelling worse. Save heat for issues like back spasms.

4. Trying to remove debris from an injured eye
Fishing around for the irritant can worsen the wound and even lead to permanent damage.Instead, protect the eye-secure a paper cup over it with tape so nothing else can get in-and seek immediate care. The only excepting is if you get a chemical in you eye; in that case flush it out with water for about 15 minutes.

Maggie, thanks for the message. I am more inclined to keep doing this if I think it is use to someone else!

7 Dangerous First Aid Mistakes Part 5
by the Physicians of The Doctors, Readers' Digest, 04-15

5. Removing gauze from a bleeding wound
If the pad soaks through, don't pick it up and replace it-just add a fresh pad of gauze on top, says Chris Cebollero, chief of EMS for Christian Hospital in St. Louis. Clotting factors in the blood surface to help stop the bleeding: picking up the old gauze can remove them and make the wound start bleeding all over again. If that happens, apply pressure to the cut until the bleeding stops, and then rinse the wound out (to prevent infection), apply an antibiotic ointment (if not allergic), and wrap with a bandage.

Has anyone heard about new advances in Alzheimer's treatment? There was recent research done that show some medications used for other conditions can greatly help those affected by Alzheimer's. Since they are medications already in use it could greatly reduce the time getting them into use for this condition! The news report didn't state what they were, but it may be a source of hope! I currently know 3 people at different stages, it is such a gradual thief and I would love to see it controlled or eliminated!

7 Dangerous First Aid Mistakes Part 6
by the Physicians of The Doctors, Readers' Digest, 04-15

6. Not seeking care after a car accident
If you have severe car damage, get checked out at the hospital, even if you feel fine. "Your adrenaline fueled, flight-or fight response can mask pain initially," says Cebollero, "It can be ten minutes or two hours after the accident before you feel something." Responders at the scene can't necessarily rule out brain bleeds or broken bones.

7. Making it hard for the EMT to find you

Say you're stung by a bee in your backyard and are having a serious allergic reaction. First have someone call 911. Then head to the driveway.
Choking in a restaurant? Don't run to the bathroom. "People die in bathrooms from choking because they do't want to disturb other diners/ They collapse, and nobody knows why," says Pellegrino. Stay where people can help you.

RISKY DRUGS, When to say "No" to your doctor
from Good Housekeeping Magazine, April 2014

I was reminded of this when a friend said his doctor had told him he had an option of taking an antibiotic and getting better in 5 days, or of NOT taking the antibiotic and getting better in 5 days.

Is Our Drug Habit Killing Us?
by Richard Laliberte
If we don't stomp overdosing on antibiotics, even a simple scrape could be fatal. The pills we pop like candy are becoming less effective than sweets..

We all contribute to antibiotic resistance, but taking steps to prevent infection, correctly using medicines and being responsible consumer help keep things from getting worse.

1. Keep vaccinations up to date.
If kids get a pneumonia shot it helps protect them and also will be less likely that the disease will be transmitted to adults.
2. Wash hands often.
You'll use fewer antibiotics if you don't get sick in the first place. Don't forget lunchtime or when you are eating away from home.
3. Cook eggs, meat and poultry well, and handle raw meat carefully to avoid cross-contamination. Cutting food-borne infections cuts the chances you and your family will need antibiotics.

The Cure for Brain Fog, Good Housekeeping Magazine, March 2015
by Toni Gerber Hope

Lack of sleep can mess with your head...
How to fix what's keeping you up at night.

6 REASONS YOU'RE NOT SLEEPING (PART 1)

1."Me" time.
Yes, you desperately need and deserve those "me" minutes, but doing something good for yourself can actually backfire when your evening is as full as a workday (with dinner prep, eating, story time with little ones, homework with bigger ones, etc.) Once the house is finally quiet, you want to catch up on e-mail, do your crafting, call your sister, or just talk to your husband. You should! You just need to be more strategic about it.
SLEEP SOLUTIONS
Small bites of scheduled "me" time throughout the day can satisfy the yen the same way 5- to 10-minute bouts of exercise throughout the day can up to fitness. So get up 15 minutes before your family, listen to a recorded book on your commute (or other drive time)or set aside 15 minutes at lunch.

Set a phone alarm for a predetermined amount of time for the chores that eat up your nights, and get everyone involved:Your kids can unload the dishwasher; your husband can make the lunches for tomorrow. When the timer dings, you're done-and ready to decompress.

This article was not written for farm and/or home schooling families and all the extra chores and responsibilities of life but there is a definite need to care for yourself AND get the rest you need.

How to fix what's keeping you up at night.

6 REASONS YOU'RE NOT SLEEPING (PART 2)

2. Your iPad/computer
Tablet, smartphones, laptops...whether for work, Facebook/Instagram/Twitter, and addiction to Candy Crush of media-streaming via a lit-up screen, they can be nest to impossible to turn off at night. Watching or playing keeps you up because it's stimulating, and the short-wavelength (blue) light suppresses melatonin, your body's sleep-inducing hormone. Now e-readers have been added to the list of sleep saboteurs: A just-released study at Brigham and Women;s Hospital in Boston found that compared to those who read printed books, users of e-readers that emitted light felt less drowsy in the evening, took longer to fall asleep and were sleepier and less alert the next morning- even after 8 hours of sleep.

Watch out for sudden vision changes!

A few weeks ago I noticed a sudden fuzziness to the vision in my right eye, kind of like a gauze curtain over part of the eye. I called for an eye exam appointment. They were able to get me in the next day. They did the usual tests and I was told it might be a small retinal bleed that would clear up on its own, or possibly very early glaucoma, which is very treatable, come back in a week and we will check again. When I went back some other tests were done showing a partial retina detachment, My doctor arranged for surgery the next day. My surgery went well and my vision should return to normal. If I had waited longer it would only get worse and I could have lost the vision in that eye.

What Are Probiotics?
By Mary Jo DiLonardo
WebMD Feature Reviewed by David Kiefer, MD

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as something that causes diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called "good" or "helpful" bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.

Probiotics are naturally found in your body. You can also find them in some foods and supplements.

It's only been since about the mid-1990s that people have wanted to know more about probiotics and their health benefits. Doctors often suggest them to help with digestive problems. And because of their new-found fame, you can find them in everything from yogurt to chocolate.

How Do They Work?

Researchers are trying to figure out exactly how probiotics work. Here are some of the ways they may keep you healthy:

When you lose "good" bacteria in your body (like after you take antibiotics, for example), probiotics can help replace them.
They can lower the amount of "bad" bacteria in your system that can cause infections or other problems.
They can help balance your "good" and "bad" bacteria to keep your body working like it should.
Types of Probiotics
Many types of bacteria are classified as probiotics. They all have different benefits, but most come from two groups. Ask your doctor about which might best benefit you.

Lactobacillus. This may be the most common probiotic. It’s the one you’ll find in yogurt and other fermented foods. Different strains can help with diarrhea and may help with people who can’t digest lactose, the sugar in milk.

Bifidobacterium. You can also find it in some dairy products. It may help ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

What Do They Do?
Probiotics help move food through your gut. Researchers are still trying to figure out which are best for certain health problems. Some common conditions they treat are:

Irritable bowel syndrome
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Infectious diarrhea (caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites)
Antibiotic-related diarrhea
There is also some research to show they ease the symptoms of non-stomach-related problems. For example, some people say they have helped with:

*Skin conditions, like eczema
*Urinary and vaginal health
*Preventing allergies and colds
*Oral health

More to be posted later.

What Are Probiotics?
How to Use Them Safely
The FDA regulates probiotics like foods, not like medications. Unlike drug companies, makers of probiotic supplements don’t have to show their products are safe or that they work. Ask your doctor for more information about the correct product and dose for you.

In general, probiotic foods and supplements are thought to be safe. Mild side effects might include upset stomach, diarrhea, gas, and bloating for the first couple of days after you start them. They may also trigger allergic reactions. Stop taking them and talk to your doctor if you have problems.

A lot of people must be careful with over-the-counter pain relievers for various reasons, such as interaction with prescription medications, allergies or other reasons; aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen. A recent science report stated dangers of drugs such as Alleve as well. We recently found a different option, a topical analgesic lotion. Rub it on the affected area with sore muscles, joint pain etc and it gives relief. A representative at a county fair booth explained how it worked. My DH was skeptical but decided to give it a try for knee pain he has been suffering with for months. He got a list of the ingredients and looked them up individually before making the purchase. It may not work for everyone but it seems to make sense to apply it near the source of pain rather than run it through you system as an oral medication.
The brand name of the one he has tried is Real Time Pain Relief, sold online.

On the subject of probiotics:

I was lucky enough recently to attend a lecture on this very subject by a dietician and nutritionist with all kinds of educational title initials after her name, and who works with Dr. Andrew Weil. She was very up front in saying she is a "food first" nutritionist, but said there is little actual research to show significant benefits of commercially-available probiotics. In her words: "If you can afford them and are not giving up something essential with the money you are using to buy them, then by all means continue using them.". But she challenged the audience to focus on PREBIOTICS - getting nutrients from the foods consumed and the state in which they are consumed. Thank goodness onions and garlic are some of the most powerful prebiotics, because I eat lots of both. No vampires around my house!

It all has to do with the PROPORTION of good bugs V bad bugs in our guts, and any prebiotic taken by mouth cannot physically get deep enough into the gut in the quantities needed to change that proportion to benefit our body.

I only raise this subject to encourage those interested in learning more to do some research on PREBIOTICS in food and learn a less expensive way to incorporate great nutrition in our lives and nourish our bodies as effectively as possible.

Cindy,
I don't know that I have ever heard of prebiotics! You have given me a great study assignment. Are there any special sources of info you would suggest?

Thanks!

I just saw a typo in my post. In the line where I mention "proportion", it should say any PRObiotic taken by mouth....not prebiotic. All prebiotics are taken by mouth since they are components in food!

Regarding where to research, the speaker I saw said research is in the very early stages and she had nowhere to point us except to "read nutritional info from trusted sources". Not much help, is it? But she talked about how the whole gut thing and microbiome are what we will be seeing in terms of health and wellness in the coming years.

Her basic food advice was to eat a good variety of foods, reduce the amount of highly processed foods as much as possible, get some fermented stuff in you unless you have any condition where you should avoid such things. The idea is to feed your gut well and your whole body will function better, possibly to the point that it can aid in weight loss. I really like that last part!
