Health and safety go hand in hand.

September 14-20 is Child Passenger Safety Week.
Children are safest in a rear facing seat until the age of 2, and/or they weigh 20 lbs and fit properly in a 5-point harness front facing seat.
The use of a booster seat reduces injuries by 45% over use of an adult seat belt alone for children who have outgrown their 5-point harness front facing car seat and should be used until the are 4'9", usually between 8-12 years old. One report said children should not ride in the front seat until they are 13 years old.

Info from ABC Action News, a AAA study, and Pediatrician's site.

Susan! That is AWESOME! I knew pumpkin seeds were good for you, but I didn't know just HOW good! I finally learned how to make pumpkin seeds properly this year, and they turned out so crunchy and yummy. Love them! Thank you so much for this information! Hugs - Nini

Fast to Boost the Immune System
from Reader's Digest, News from the World of Medicine, 10-2014

In a recent University of Southern California pilot study, researchers found that chemotherapy was less toxic yet just as effective when patients fasted for 3 days before taking the drugs. When the body senses starvation, it tries to clean house and dumps what it doesn't need-including old immune system cells. Then, when the body gets food again, it starts producing new immune system cells. Researchers are at work on a bigger clinical trial. They caution patients to fast only under medical supervision.
------
Another option is one I used personally and feel made a difference. When I was having chemotherapy one of my doctors suggested an acupuncture treatment before each chemo session,"to balance the body".

THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE OF YOUR BRAIN
by Kimberly Hiss, from Reader's Digest, September 2014

The intro says "A look at the neuroscience of our most human traits-love, anger, compassion-and how to harness your mental muscle for a more fulfilling life." This is a fascinating article.

I won't recopy the whole thing but there's one section I particularly thought should be shared.

YOUR BRAIN WHILE LISTENING TO MUSIC
When you hear a piece of music you enjoy, a cascade of mental activity processes the music "touching on all the most advanced aspect of human cognition".
First the sound hits your ears, where vibrations are turned into electrical impulses sent to the brain's cortex. When you recognize the tune, or where you last heard it the auditory cortex connects to regions that handle memory retrieval. Then, if you start tapping your foot you've activated the motor cortex in a particular way because you're tapping to the exact beat of the song. If the song make you feel happy, it turns on your brain's reward system, powerful circuitry triggered by essentials for survival like eating and sex.
"Music increases cross talk between... reward centers that handle pleasure and ... areas that handle prediction and anticipation...
It may be that music fuels your brain's innate desire to detect patterns and solve problems."

And here we thought it was just fun!

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. It has been so crazy busy around here getting ready for fall and "putting the garden to bed" that I have been slacking off here. Knowing it is appreciated should get me moving again!

GOALIE DISEASE!!
Is someone you love playing soccer? Do the play on artificial turf? There was a warning on the national news tonight about artificial turf and the fact that ground up tires are sprinkled on it after installation to keep the "blades" of grass upright.
In Texas, of 38 children who have developed non-Hodgkins lymphoma, 34 play as soccer goalies! One hospital is starting to call it Goalie Disease.

Medication and Advanced Age
from "pharmacy "Pearl Sessions" by Morgan Jones and Steven Elrod,
pharmacy students

Medications can effect older people in different ways. I'm probably one of the senior farmgirls but even if this doesn't fit you, you may have parents or older relatives that may be effected.

Alalgesics, such as Morphine may cause increased sensitivity.

Antihypertension drugs for blood pressure
Lasartan - Bigger drop in blood pressure
Enalapril - Bigger drop in blood pressure
Proparanolol - Slight drop in heart rate
Nitroglycerin - no issues
Diltiazem - Bigger drop in blood pressure
Veramil - Bigger drop in blood pressure

More to come next time I post.

Why to Avoid Antacids
from Momtutor.com
This article was part of an advertisement, which I am not including. There are many home remedies that you may want to share.
I will be doing a little research too.

Commercials for antacids joke about people getting indigestion (remember the one with the guy groaning, “I can’t believe I ate the whooole thing”?) and then show the smiles and instant relief from the antacid.

But in reality taking antacids is the worst thing you can do.

Here’s why:

Antacids typically contain one or more of these ingredients:

1. Calcium carbonate (the same kind found in calcium
supplements)
2. Aluminum salts
3. Magnesium salts (think Milk of Magnesia)
4. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)

They all neutralize your stomach acid, and that is problem number 1. It might feel nice in the moment, but it’s very, VERY bad.

Because your stomach needs acid to break down proteins (and to do other things which I’ll talk about below). So if you take away the acid, you take away your body’s ability to digest your food. And that’s NEVER good.

The Physical Cost Of Antacids
======================

The effects of this come out in different ways depending on your antacid of choice:

1. Aluminum salts dissolve slowly in your stomach and cause constipation.

2. Magnesium salts act quicker and lead to diarrhea.

3. Bicarbonate of soda releases carbon dioxide gas and causes burping and belching.

4. Calcium carbonate antacids (like Tums or Rolaids) are the type that is most touted by the pharmaceutical companies. After all, you get some much-needed calcium with your antacid. That’s great, right?

Nope.

First of all, when you stop your digestion with antacids, your body can’t effectively absorb nutrients anyway. So don’t think your bones are staying strong and osteoporosis- free from Tums. They are not.

Calcium carbonate acts quickly like magnesium salts, but stays around and neutralizes stomach acid for a long period of time. So that means it can cause either constipation OR diarrhea.

What makes this scenario even worse is that calcium carbonate antacids like Tums and Rolaids are like candy– chewable and fruit or mint-flavored. So people tend to overuse them, compounding the damage they’re causing.

But wait-there’s more going on here:

Now, in addition to bringing your digestion to a screeching halt and hampering your body’s ability to absorb nutrients, antacids cause even more harm.

When they neutralize your stomach acid, they raise the pH in your stomach from about 2 (very acidic) to between 3 and 4. That might not seem like a big change, but it wipes out 99% of your stomach acid.

This is bad because, in addition to breaking down food, your stomach acid also acts as a natural protective barrier for your body. Every day you take in foods and environmental toxins that have the potential to make you very ill or even kill you.

But they don’t, because stomach acid usually destroys these dangerous invaders…but if the stomach acid isn’t there, the harmful microorganisms have the “run of the house.” And that can mean disaster.

Also, when you so drastically change your stomach’s pH, you also completely upset the natural balance of flora in your intestines.

In other words, antacids are murder–literally–on the beneficial probiotic bacteria in your gut.

Without a healthy population of beneficial bacteria in your gut, you’re susceptible to digestive problems, infections of all kinds, food allergies and leaky gut syndrome. (This is where your intestinal wall becomes porous and toxins can seep out all over your body.)

THE SLIM PERSON'S KITCHEN
from and article called 7 Lessons from the Food Lab, by Brian Wansink, PhD,Readers Digest, November 2014

After taking pictures of everything; dishes, sinks, refrigerator shelves, counters, snacks, pet-food dishes tables, lighting, even random items held up by refrigerator magnets on the refrigerators of
a number of kitchens in a demographically representative city, Syracuse,New York, 8 months was spent coding the contents to see what thin people do differently.

Do big kitchens turn us into big people? No. It turns out kitchen size isn't the problem. It's what you seein the kitchen.

The average woman who kept potato chips on the counter weighed 8 pounds more than her neighbor who didn't.
Those who had even one box of breakfast cereal that was visible weighed 21 pounds more than the neighbors who didn't.
ADVICE: Rearrange you cupboard, pantry and refrigerator so the first visible foods are best for you. Take fruits and vegetables on the top shelf and put less healthy food in the crisper drawers.
After one week, those who tried this reported eating 3 times as many fruits and vegetable as the week before.
Produce might keep longer in the drawers but the goal is to eat it, not compost it.

SLEEP OFF ALZHEIMER'S from News From the World of Medicine by Regina Nuzzo, in Reader's Digest, November 2014

"Cutting out shut-eye may buy you time during the day, but it may speed along your brains's aging. That's the implication of a small study that followed Chinese adults ages 55 and older for a couple of years, studying changes in brain size. As we age, brain tissue shrinks in volume, but the less sleep the study participants got, the faster their brains shrank and the more steeply their cognition declined. Sleep might help remove toxic waste from the brain."

So don't take the need for rest lightly! At least that's a good excuse for those who like to sleep-in!

NATURAL COLD FIGHTERS: WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'TPart 1
by the Physicians of the Doctors, Readers Digest, 11-2014

Vitamin C is a biggie in our family, 3 or 4 times in one day, since it doesn't stay in the system long, but this article was interesting.

THE REMEDY Meditation
DOES IT WORK? Adults who meditated for eight weeks had about one third fewer colds over the winter compared with a control group, an Annals of Family Medicine study found.
DOWNSIDE? Too busy feeling Zen to report any issues.

THE REMEDY Exercise
DOES IT WORK? The same Annals study found that people who began a moderately intense exercise program had 29% fewer colds than the control group. Mild exercise may relieve symptoms like congestion.
DOWNSIDE? Take care not to over exert yourself while under the weather.

To be continued...

NATURAL COLD FIGHTERS: WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'T Part 2
by the Physicians of the Doctors, Readers Digest, 11-2014

THE REMEDY Sleep
DOES IT WORK?People who got fewer than seven hours a night were nearly three times more likely to develop symptoms when exposed to a virus than those who got eight or more hours, research found.
DOWNSIDE? None-head to bed, and sleep tight.

THE REMEDY Zinc
DOES IT WORK?This mineral shortens illness by about a day (it stops the virus from replicating)if you take it in 24 hours of feeling sick, a 2013 Cochrane review pf 18 randomized controlled trials found.
DOWNSIDE? Lozenges may leave a bad taste or cause nausea. Avoid nasal sprays, which damage you sense of smell.

NATURAL COLD FIGHTERS: WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN'T Part 3
by the Physicians of the Doctors, Readers Digest, 11-2014

THE REMEDY Probiotics
DOES IT WORK?They may prevent colds, a 2013 analysis of 10 studies found probiotics decreased the number of people who had at least one cold. But not all studies show benefits.
DOWNSIDE? They may cause bloating at first. Strains vary, but some studies used those in OTC brands, such as Lactobacillus.

THE REMEDY Echinacea
DOES IT WORK?Most evidence suggest it's not useful, but some experts still recommend it. One New England Journal Study found that echinacea did not prevent or treat colds. A 2014 review of 24 trials found that echinacea shortened colds more than a placebo, but evidence wasn't strong.
DOWNSIDE? Studies use various preparations, plant parts, and species, so results are hard to generalize. Side effects aren't common but check with your doctor if you're allergic to plants in the daisy family (including ragweed).
