Many of us have heard about the use of a small dose of aspirin for heart health, but today's news says it helps prevent cancer!
"Taking at least one half (160 to 162.5 mg) of Aspirin during a suspected heart attack can help save your life. And, if you've survived a heart attack, a doctor-directed aspirin regimen can reduce your risk of a second attack by 30%."
According to the report taking a small-dose aspirin daily helps prevent cancer, particularly of the stomach and digestive system. They suggested using the cheapest, crumbly non-coated aspirin. You might want to check with your doctor to make sure it isn't a problem with other meds or conditions!

Susan, good information.
I deal with MS fatigue everyday and the summer heat aggravates it. Doctors tell people with MS to never leave home without something cold to drink especially in the summer.
My niece also has MS and her Dr. told her to eat only cold or cool foods in the summer.
I do eat some hot foods in the summer when I know I will be home for several hours after eating because it will weaken me unless I stay cool.
Hugs, Sara Walk in Peace. Live with Joy. |

Sara, Good info! Those that have experienced a condition like MS and learned what works for them are the best sources of info. Please share more when you get a chance!
What Happens During a Heart Attack? In women, heart attack symptoms can be so mild they may be dismissed as something minor. Don't let that happen to you. Heart Attack Symptoms Men and women have different symptoms, but both may have pain, pressure, or discomfort in the chest. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating, fainting, and nausea. You may also have pain in the neck, jaw, or shoulders. Men are more likely to break out in a cold sweat and feel pain move down the left arm during a heart attack. Symptoms in Women About 435,000 women have heart attacks in the U.S. each year. The symptoms can be so mild they are often dismissed as something minor. Women are more likely than men to have back or neck pain, heartburn, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and indigestion. They may also feel extremely tired, light-headed, or dizzy. Flu-like symptoms and sleep problems may also occur 2 weeks before a heart attack. What to Do If you or someone you're with has symptoms that might be a heart attack, call 911 right away. You're more likely to survive if you get treated within 90 minutes. While you're calling 911, the person with heart attack symptoms should chew and swallow an aspirin to lower the risk of a blood clot (unless they're allergic). If the person is unconscious, hands-only CPR can double his chances of survival. Risks for Heart Attack Your odds of having a heart attack go up with age, and men have a greater risk than women. A family history of heart disease also increases your risk. Smoking can raise your risk of a heart attack. So can having high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, and being obese. Other things that can raise your risk of a heart attack are a lack of exercise, depression, and stress.
This was condensed from a www.webmd.com article about heart disease. It also included info about diagnosis, treatments, and after a heart attack. Check there for more detailed info.

just found this at www.mindbodygreen.com. I haven't tried any of these recipes but they sound fascinating.
DIY: 4 Simple Face Mists For Glowing SkinWhen it comes to looking refreshed, summer can be challenging, especially when it's humid or if you're physically active. To fight the heat, I keep my DIY on-the-go hydrating mist handy at all times for a no-hassle way to instantly cool, calm and protect my skin.
Mist your face to re-hydrate and freshen your makeup, or hydrate your hair to soften split ends. These DIY face mists are anti-aging, acne fighting, refreshing and even mood boosting! They'll make your skin glow!
Here are a few DIY hydrating mists that you can make at home to help you stay cool and looking fresh no matter how much fun you're having this summer:
Items to have on hand
4-ounce glass spray bottle (I purchase mine at my local health food store along with the other ingredients) distilled water organic rose water pure organic aloe vera organic green tea bags 1 fresh, organic cucumber lavender essential oil ylang ylang essential oil tea tree oil vitamin E oil organic witch hazel Here are some amazingly easy and refreshing recipes:
1. Cucumber-Aloe Hydrating Mist
Ingredients
1 small cucumber 1/3 cup of distilled water 1 tsp. of aloe vera 1 tsp. witch hazel 4-ounce glass spray bottle Directions
Peel and cut your cucumber (dice it or toss into a food processor). If using a processor, strain through a cheesecloth to extract the cucumber essence and to keep your mist light. I like to include some of the diced pieces in the mix either way. Pour into your spray bottle along with the water, aloe vera, witch hazel and shake it up! Mist as necessary!
2. Rose Soothing Anti-aging Mist
Ingredients
1/2 cup of organic rose water a few drops of vitamin E oil 3 drops of ylang ylang essential oil 4-ounce glass spray bottle Directions
Combine water, vitamin E oil and ylang ylang oil in your glass bottle. Voila!
3. Acne Green Tea Tree Face Mist
Ingredients
1/2 cup of steeped and cooled green tea 4 drops of tea tree essential oil 4-ounce glass spray bottle Directions
Steep the green tea bag in a 1/2 cup of boiled water. Remove bag after five minutes and let the tea cool down before pouring into bottle. Put the tea tree oil in the bottle as well, screw on the top and shake it up!
4. Lavender Antibacterial Mist
Ingredients
1/2 cup of distilled water 4 drops of lavender essential oil 1 tsp witch hazel 4-ounce glass spray bottle Directions
Place water, lavender oil and witch hazel in your spray bottle. Shake it up and spray!
*If you are pregnant or nursing, consult with your doctor first before using any essential oils. They are powerful and can be absorbed by your skin and carried throughout your body!
I hope you enjoy these recipes! Stay cool!

10 Signs and Symptoms of Heat Strokefrom www.activebeat.co
#'s 1-3
1. Incredibly Hot Skin
Incredibly hot, red skin is one of the most popular signs of heat stroke. If your skin is hot to touch and you have an internal body temperature 105 degrees or higher, you will need to see a doctor as soon possible.
2. Dizziness and Fainting
In addition to an internal body temperature greater than 105 degrees Fahrenheit, dizziness and fainting are the next most common symptoms of heat stroke.
3. Extreme Fatigue
Spending a day in the sun can be exhausting at the best of times, however, if you’re experiencing some of the other symptoms on this list along with extreme fatigue, it may be a sign of heat stroke.

10 Signs and Symptoms of Heat Stroke from www.activebeat.co
#'s 4-6
4. Nausea
Nausea is another indication that your heat exhaustion has progressed into heat stroke. A constant nauseous or uneasy feeling in your stomach (especially combined with dizziness) may mean your condition is worse than you initially thought. Drink lots of water to help treat the nausea and, as always, contact your doctor for assistance.
5. Vomiting
Feeling nauseous is one thing, but actually vomiting is another. If your nausea has progressed into vomiting, this is a definite sign of heat stroke and it’s critical that you seek medical attention immediately. Drink as much water as possible on your way to seek help.
6. Rapid Heartbeat
A rapid heartbeat after spending time in the sun can be an indication of a serious problem. If you’re experiencing some of the other symptoms on this list in addition to a rapid heartbeat, you will want to make sure you get checked out immediately. When it comes to the heart, you don’t want to take any chances.

Susan, good info on heat stroke. Before I retired I worked in the quality department of an auto-glass plant. The lab I worked in was air conditioned but the plant was not. One summer it reached over 100 for weeks.
Part of my job was to inspect glass on the floor of the plant. One day I became ill and the nurse thought I was having a heart attack. At the hospital it was determined to be heat stress.
The doctor told me that women are more apt to suffer from the heat than men. He said that during the summer I should eat a banana a day because heat leaches calcium from women's bones.

7. Mental Confusion
Individuals who have heat stroke often feel dizzy but mental confusion is also a popular symptom. If you’re having difficulty thinking, remembering or focusing, it may be an indication that you’re suffering from heat stroke. If this is the case, contact your doctor or seek medical help as soon as possible.
8. Seizures
Seizures are a very serious (and very dangerous) symptom of heat stroke that requires immediate medical attention. This symptom often presents itself abruptly and offers few warning signs. If someone you know has suffered a seizure, get them to the hospital as soon as possible.

9. Lack of Sweating
One of the differences between heat exhaustion and full-blown heat stroke is a lack of sweating. If you’ve spent too much time in the sun, you’ll likely feel very hot and perspirate a lot. However, if you’re suffering from heat stroke, your body will not produce sweat, despite feeling incredibly hot.
10. Severe Headache
If you’ve spent time in the sun and you’re experiencing a severe headache, you may be suffering from heat stroke. It’s common for individuals to have a slight headache after spending time outdoors in the summer but a severe headache, combined with at least one other symptom on this list is an indication you need to seek medical attention immediately.

I don't often tune in but was watching Dr. Oz a couple of days ago. He mentioned that beside the heart related issues that are more commonly known now, aspirin is still a good pain reliever. Some people do find it hard on their stomachs, so he suggested using aspirin creams for pain relief when an ache is near the skin surface for sore back or other muscles. He also said the Alka-Seltzer is made with aspirin and that it is a quicker option for headache relief because it doesn't need the time to dissolve.

Some time ago I posted that women with osteoporosis should avoid soda pop. Yesterday I received the Family Health update sent out by a local hospital, the Northfield hospital in Northfield, MN, and was shocked by one article. Please read this if you have daughters or granddaughters, or know someone who does!
It doesn't mention the relationship for men and boys but they are usually at less risk for osteoporosis.
SODA POP STEALS CALCIUM FROM BONES Take your pick: another soda or strong bones. It's not a tough decision especially for adolescent girls. Research points to a strong correlation between the consumption of soft drink, especially dark colas, and a dramatic increase in the risk of broken bones for girls in their teens. The risk is three times greater for girls when they regularly consume soft drinks; the risk is five times greater for girls who drink soda and are physically active. ... It is not clear what elements of drinks do the damage. Researchers believe the drinks interfere with foundational bone development that takes place in adolescence, leading to an elevated risk of osteoporosis later in life. Another theory is that teens are choosing soda over calcium-rich milk. ...

LOCAL HONEY FOR HEALTH A lady who was selling sweet corn outside a local convenience store also had honey and maple syrup. We had a great visit and I learned that there are special health benefits from using local honey. She said that because the bees collect from local plants the honey can help deal with allergies. She suggested one tsp each day. Sounds like a pleasant and easy health tip!

DEADLY PAIN PILLS from Consumer Reports September 2014 "America is in pain - and being killed by its pain pills." This article has a tremendous amount of information. I will be sharing bits from the article over the next few days.
It's easy to overdose with acetaminophen We may think this is a safe painkiller but taking more than 4,000 milligrams a day is linked to liver damage. Acetaminophen is in many products making it easy to exceed they 3,250 milligram recommended daily dose. For example, Tylenol Extra strength has a maximum dose of 3,000 milligrams, take it with NyQuil and you get a maximum dose of 2,600 milligrams and you are already way over the safe amount. Acetaminophen should be avoided altogether if you are at risk for liver disease or drink alcohol heavily because that multiplies the dangers.

@Susan, thanks for the tips on heat stroke and on cokes. I'm out in the heat of our farm or at our other properties and sometimes feel light headed and then remember, 'Oh yeah, I need to drink some water'. Sometimes I just really crave an ice cold Coke or Dr. Pepper while I'm working in the heat. This was a good reminder that they're not good for me and I need to stick with water.

DEADLY PAIN PILLS #2 from Consumer Reports September 2014 "America is in pain - and being killed by its pain pills."
...OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin - prescription narcotics can make days bearable it you are recovering from surgery or suffering from cancer, but they are as addictive as heroin and are rife with deadly side effects. Prescriptions of these and other opioids have climbed 300% in the past decade. ... With increased use have come increased deaths: 46 people per day, or almost 17,000 people per year die from overdoses of the drugs. For every death, more than 30 people are admitted to the emergency room due to complications. Some of these tragedies stem from abuse, many are accidental.
That doesn't mean no one should use them but that they should ONLY be used for serious conditions and then used with extreme care and monitoring.

DEADLY PAIN PILLS #3 from Consumer Reports September 2014 "America is in pain - and being killed by its pain pills."
Got Pain?
FOR BACK PAIN Nondrug measures. Staying physically active is the single most important thing you can do to treat back pain, with or without drugs. Acupuncture, massage, Pilates, tai chi, physical therapy, and yoga might also help some people, research suggests. (These are long term options) First drug options Try an over the counter pain reliever, such as acetaminaphen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen. (Be careful though, if your doctor has told you not to use any of them because of drug interactions.) If that doesn't work If after 10 days or so you still have pain you could talk with your doctor about a muscle relaxant. But they have risks that include addiction, sedation, fatigue, and dizziness. Consumer Report's analysis shows they don't work any better than OTC(over the counter) medications And skip opioids they don't work any better for back pain and they pose serious risks.

DEADLY PAIN PILLS #4 from Consumer Reports September 2014 "America is in pain - and being killed by its pain pills."Got Pain?
FOR HEADACHES Nondrug options Cutting back on alcohol and avoiding foods that set off your headaches might help, as can exercise and controlling stress with meditation, relaxation therapy, or other means. Avoid overusing over-the-counter drugs; that can cause rebound headaches. Try this first For run-of-the-mill headaches, try appropriate doses of acetaminophen. Ibuprofen and naproxen are OK too - if you don't use them too often. If that doesn't work You might have a migraine headache. If it is mild, consider a product that combines acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine(such as Excedrin Extra Strength). But if you suffer from more severe migraines or have them more than twice per month, you might need a prescription drug called a triptan. Because triptans increase the risk of heart attack and stroke use them cautiously.
From another source. "Sometimes headaches are eased by drinking more water if you are dehydrated."

DEADLY PAIN PILLS #5 from Consumer Reports September 2014 "America is in pain - and being killed by its pain pills."Got Pain?
FOR JOINT PAIN Nondrug options Regular low-impact exercises such as walking or yoga, and stretching are best and can eliminate or sharply reduce your need to take medicine. Try this first Ibuprofen and naproxen usually work better than acetaminophen because they ease the inflammation which often accompanies joint pain caused by osteoarthritis. But taking them long term can cause serious stomach and bleeding problems, so limit their use as much as possible, or consider appropriate doses of acetaminophen If that doesn't work Ask your doctor about a higher-dose version, prescription strength version of ibuprofen or a related drug, but get monitored because the higher the dose the greater the risk of stomach bleeding.

from Woman's Day Magazine, September 2014 Health Squad
The Researcher says Adopt four easy habits. These tiny tweeks to your day can help move your metabolism in the right direction. 1. Have an afternoon coffee Caffeine provides a short-term metabolism boost. A cup around 2 pm will keep your metabolism humming through the rest to the day. The same goes for a tea that contains caffeine. 2. Avoid late night munching.Your metabolism slows down a tad, plus people who eat in the evening consume more calories overall.... 3.Chow down on hot peppers Capsaicin, the ingredient in peppers that give them their heat, slightly increases metabolic rate.... 4.Embrace fidgeting Fidgeting, whether jiggling you legs or tapping your fingers, has been found to speed up the metabolism, helping you burn calories around the clock. If you're not a natural squirmer, set a reminder on your phone to get up and walk around for a few minutes every hour.

from Woman's Day Magazine, September 2014 Fast Track to Better Health
Kristen Ritchie wrote Deep Breathing Relieved My Insomnia "Four years ago, I was traveling a lot for work, and the combination of stress plus being away from my own bed led to sleep problems. I tried melatonin supplements and warm milk, but nothing kept me snoozing soundly. So I called a mind/body specialist and scheduled a session. We created a deep breathing routine that starts with a 4-second inhalation, followed by an 8-second exhalation. Then I take a regular breath and breathe deeply again, repeating the cycle four times. Next I picture myself at the beach. Withing 15 minutes (sometimes sooner) I'm asleep for the whole night, even when I'm not at home. WHY IT WORKS The practice of deep breathing reduces blood pressure, clears a frenzied mind and lowers body temperature, all of which promote restful sleep, says Chicago psychologist Michael Merrill, PhD."

Susan--I've noticed that when I do yoga before I go to bed, I sleep better. Breathing is very important in yoga, so yes, by practicing good breathing techniques, we can help ourselves feel healthier and better. Breathing can also help reduce pain. Cindy

3 Cool Reasons to Walk More from Good Housekeeping Magazine , October 2014 Part 1 1. Sleep Even Better HOW: Walk after dinner Put aside worries that being active might ruin your sleep: People who walk or jog in the evening often report sounder slumber says a study from Sleep Medicine. A 15-minute post-dinner stroll can also help prevent heart disease and diabetes, finds a George Washington University study. Walkers who did short bouts after each meal saw a healthier dip in blood sugar than those who strode for 45 minutes consecutively. The biggest benefit? After dinner.
Why This Rocks: You get a good night's sleep and stable blood sugar to keep cravings at bay, helping with weight loss.
