Second 5 Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar
6. Apple cider vinegar can be used as a natural aftershave.
Fill a bottle with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, and shake before applying to the face.
7. It's an all-natural massage treatment.
Rubbing apple cider vinegar on your hands and feet will give massage-like benefits and relief to tired hands and feet.
8. Apple cider vinegar can aid in weight loss.
For daily weight management, add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 16 ounces of water. This concoction can be sipped throughout the day. Data shows some limited, yet significant, weight loss benefits from sustained daily intake of acetic acid (which is a main ingredient in apple cider vinegar).
In a 2009 study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, it was found that subjects that consumed acetic acid for 12 weeks experienced significant declines in body weight, abdominal fat, waist circumference and triglycerides. Triglycerides contribute to the bad cholesterol that we want to avoid.
9. Apple cider vinegar will balance your entire inner body system.
The body constantly strives to achieve a state of equilibrium. Apple cider vinegar helps the body maintain a healthy alkaline pH level. Research shows that higher acid levels (lower pH level) leads to a lack of energy and higher incidences of infection. Hence, my desire to sip some a few times a day for a natural boost of energy.
10. It can help you detox.
As part of balancing the body's pH, apple cider vinegar creates an overall detoxification of the body. Research shows that it can help stimulate cardiovascular circulation and help detoxify the liver.

Another 5 Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar
11. ACV is great for your lymphatic system.
This miracle vinegar helps to break up mucous throughout the body and cleanse the lymph nodes. Believe it or not, research suggests that apple cider vinegar can help with allergies because of its ability to reduce mucous and sinus congestion. When reducing the effects of allergies, it can also help stave off sinus infections and their related symptoms, such as sore throats and headaches.
12. It can help your body get rid of candida.
This vinegar is rich in natural enzymes that can help rid your body of candida—yeasts that are attributed to thrush in humans. Candida also is blamed for creating symptoms of fatigue, poor memory, sugar cravings, and yeast infections.
13. ACV can help you reduce heartburn.
Though it might seem like an oxymoron to treat stomach acid with an acid-containing vinegar, there is research suggesting that apple cider vinegar works by correcting low acid, hence reducing heartburn. Natural remedy experts say you should begin to feel relief very shortly after taking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar followed by a glass of water. Note that apple cider vinegar will not give relief if you have an ulcer.
14. The use of apple cider vinegar is effective in repelling fleas on your pets.
One part vinegar and one part water can be sprayed on your pets fur and rubbed in generously to the skin. Saturate the entire coat, and continue every day for a few days to a week. Any flea infestation will surely be gone.
15. It's an all-natural room freshener.
Apple cider vinegar will clean your toilets and leave your bathroom smelling like apples! Just pour apple cider vinegar into the toilet, and allow it to sit overnight. It can also be used in dishwashers as a substitute for dish detergent. Mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup water, and you can use this solution to clean microwaves, kitchen surfaces, windows, glasses and mirrors, too.

Apples can replace the daily acid reflux pill taken. The properties in a fresh apple do the same thing and they taste much better. Their high antioxidant content is great for flushing chemicals in the body that reduce vitamins in the blood. When poisons ingested are reduced the natural energy level returns.

Strawberries Strawberries are another very good fruit that helps to maximize energy. This lovely little heart shaped food is essential in introducing proper amounts of potassium into the system. Once this mineral has been replenished it assists in reducing heart arrhythmia which can cause reduced energy due to the heart not pumping enough oxygen through it.
While we are on the topic of strawberries, here is another article that also promotes my favorite fruit, from www.healthdiaries.com
8 Health Benefits of Strawberries
Everyone knows that strawberries are delicious. However, did you know just what a nutritional powerhouse they are? Here are eight reasons to include strawberries in your diet.
Diet One cup of strawberries contains over 13% of the RDA of dietary fiber, yet only 43 calories. The dietary fiber in strawberries helps to keep digestion regular, as well as lowers blood pressure and curbs overeating.
Antioxidants Strawberries contain a chemical compound called phenols. Anthocyanin, a particular phenol abundantly found in strawberries, lends the rich red color to the fruit. Though anthocyanin is known to have antioxidant properties within the fruit, it is debated as to whether the antioxidant agents in anthocyanin-rich foods can be absorbed into the body once digested. Fortunately, however, it is known that when anthocyanin-rich foods are consumed, the body's uric acid levels increase, which serves as an antioxidant agent.
Anti-Inflammatory The phenols in strawberries also fight against many inflammatory disorders, such as osteoarthritis, asthma and atherosclerosis, by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) in the same way that the drugs aspirin and ibuprofen do. Strawberries, however, do not carry unwanted side effects like stomach and intestinal bleeding.
Anti-Cancer The combination of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents found in strawberries is well-known to fight against the onset of many different forms of cancer. Thanks to the vitamin C, folate, and the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol that they also contain, strawberries are a delicious defense against potentially cancerous cells. Healthy Eyes The Archives of Opthalmology recently published a study in which three or more servings of strawberries (and other fruits) per day can decrease the possibility of contracting age-related macular degeneration by over one-third.
The Vigorous Vitamin C One cup of strawberries contains an incredible 136% of the RDA of vitamin C, an effective antioxidant that can help lower blood pressure, ensure a healthy immune system, and ward off the development of age-related ocular diseases, such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
Magnificent Manganese One cup of strawberries contains 21% of manganese, an essential nutrient that acts as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. By increasing the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), the enzyme responsible for protecting mitochonrdria exposed to oxygen, manganese not only helps to fight the battle against free radicals and oxidative stress, but also lessens cellular in#64258;ammation -- another cause of numerous cardiovascular diseases.
Bone Health Manganese is also great for the bones, helping in bone building and maintaining proper bone structure. The potassium, vitamin K, and magnesium in strawberries are also important for bone health.

Eat Corn For Energy Corn is one of the most recognized foods for its energy giving properties. The healthiest way to consume this delectable vegetable is to eat it right off the cob. When corn is processed many of the parts of the kernels are lost which have the most vital components in them. The mineral thiamine that is high in corn converts food into energy. Pantothenic acid is another chemical that corn is high in. This one metabolized carbohydrates that are ingested and uses them instead of storing them as fat. Benefits of Eating Sweet Corn By Robert Shifko from www.livestrong.com
Sweet corn is one of the most popular vegetables. It is loved by adults and children alike because of its sweet flavor. This vegetable, although being sweet and delicious, is a great source or many vitamins and minerals. According to WHFoods.org, sweet corn is very rich in vitamin B1, vitamin B5, vitamin C, phosphorus, manganese, folate and dietary fiber. Because of the vitamins contained in sweet corn, many health benefits can be associated with the consumption of this delicious vegetable. Cardiovascular Health Sweet corn is an excellent source of folate. Folate is commonly known as vitamin B9. According to NaturalHomeRemedies.org, consumption of folate is effective in lowering the homocysteine levels in the body. Homocysteine is an amino acid that can damage the blood vessels. Elevated levels of homocysteine in the body can directly lead to heart attacks, strokes and peripheral vascular disease. Consumption of 100 percent of the daily value of folate can reduce the risk of heart attack by as much as 10 percent.

#1 on a list of 16 cancer causing foods at www.naturalon.com . Microwave Popcorn Those little bags of popcorn are so convenient to just stick in the microwave, you wouldn’t think for a minute that they could be dangerous to your health, but they are. First, let’s talk about the bag itself. It’s lined with a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid ( PFOA). This is a toxin you can find in Teflon also. After being heated, this toxic chemical is known to cause infertility and cancer in lab animals. The EPA lists this chemical as a known carcinogen.
Now, let’s talk about the contents. Although every manufacturer uses slightly different ingredients, most of them use soybean oil (a GMO product) as well as various preservatives such as propyl gallate, a chemical that is causes stomach problems and skin rashes. Now they don’t actually say they are using GMO corn kernels, but that’s because the government says they don’t have to. Even if they don’t use GMO corn, you can bet they aren’t using organic corn!
Also, applied to the popcorn itself, is a chemical called diacetyl. Use of this chemical caused Conagra Foods to remove it from their brand of popcorn, ACT, because it was causing lung diseases in the workers at their factory.

I never have liked microwave popcorn. I use a pan that my dad used when I was a wee little thing--that pan is older than I am. I use it for other things as well but it's my go-to popcorn pan. If I want buttery taste (which I sometimes do) I'll melt some butter to put over it. I don't like anything artificial messing with my popcorn. Oh, and you can get GMO-free popcorn but some of it has been genetically modified, sad to say. i remember reading about those workers who came down with lung diseases because of that chemical. It's scary--these big corporations think their right to make money is more important than our right to know what's in our food. and if we question them, we're "uninformed", "ignorant", or "paranoid". I guess I am paranoid but I'm not the only one. Cindy

WARNING!! If you are on medication for depression, DO NOT stop your meds and jump on some bandwagon. These alternative MAY work for some. Discuss with your doctor before you drop medication, but something here may help.
Alternative Health Remedies for Depression from www.healthfission.com
Alternative health remedies are being used frequently to treat depression. Natural supplements can relieve depression in persons deficient of certain vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Chemical imbalance is influenced by malnutrition. Using these natural supplements as alternative health remedies to treat depression addresses chemical imbalance directly.
B Vitamins
Vitamins B9, B6 and B12 work as a team to lower homocysteine levels in the blood and improve nervous system health. High homocysteine levels have been known to cause depression. These alternative health remedies are also thought to be helpful in preventing Alzheimers disease.
Potassium
Potassium deficiency can cause depression, fatigue and mental sluggishness. This alternative health medicine remedies depression by regulating blood pressure and balancing water in the body. The recommended daily allowance of potassium is 2000 mg.
Iron
Iron deficiency can cause depression, weakness, headaches and exhaustion. Alternative remedies for depression should always include testing iron levels. Follow iron and other natural supplements dosage recommendations carefully. Too much of some alternative health remedies can cause serious issues.
Zinc
Zinc supplements play an important role as alternative health remedies. Zinc activates the production of brain derived neurotrophic factor. BDNF, as it is called, is known to prevent depression. Zinc is lost through perspiration. Athletes should be especially careful to get their daily zinc dose.
Calcium
Alternative health remedies for depression include calcium. Calcium is helpful in preventing PMS type symptoms such as mood swings, sadness, irritability and unwarranted depression. Calcium deficiency is known to cause problems with the central nervous system.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is among alternative health remedies for depression due to it’s effect on neurotransmitters in the brain. Vitamin C helps convert dopamine to norepinephine and tryptophan to seretonin. Seretonin and norepinephine keep depression at bay.
Vitamin D
Of all alternative health remedies for depression, Vitamin D is probably the most familiar. Everyone knows the sun cures depression quickly. The sun aids in Vitamin D production and also in the production of serotonin. The best way to get Vitamin D is a good hour of sunlight per day.
Omega 3
Omega 3 is one of the natural health remedies for bipolar depression in individuals. Manic episodes have been shown to decrease significantly using Omega 3 supplements

Complementary and alternative medicine
In a recent Journal of the American Medical Association, St. John’s wort was reported as ineffective in the treatment of severe major depression, according to a randomized controlled clinical trial. Deepak Chopra, former endocrinologist and author of books that have sold more than 10 million copies, packed B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada, with people wanting to hear more. He preaches a philosophy of health, integrating ideas as diverse as Ayurvedic medicine and quantum physics. His recommendations include herbal or aromatic therapies and even crystals as part of a wide-ranging selection of cures to affect a person’s harmony with the cosmos, and hence, their health.
What is CAM, complementary, and alternative medicine? Most definitions cover a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches, and therapies outside of the domain of conventional or allopathic medicine. These therapies may be separated into 5 major groups:
Alternative medical systems, such as naturopathic or Ayurvedic medicine. Mind-body interventions such as music therapy and meditation. Biologically-based treatments that include most herbal, special diet, and megadose vitamin therapies. Manipulative and body-based treatments such as chiropractic and massage therapies. Energy therapies, examples of which are Qi gong, Reiki, and Therapeutic Touch. Many mainstream therapies of today were once herbal, alternative, or complementary treatments that were proven effective and safe. The name “complementary” hints at the helpful role treatments such as chiropractic manipulation, massage therapy, or acupuncture may play when carefully selected, administered by trained professionals, and combined with more conventional medical therapies in treating complex disorders.
As physicians are under greater pressure to practice scientific or evidence-based medicine, more and more people are flocking to the fringe, to unproven alternatives for their health concerns. Why? Could it be because our world is more complex and frightening and we seem to have less control over our own lives? Or is it because powerful mass marketing of health enhancing substances, devices and cure-all therapeutic approaches is having unprecedented influence on our behaviour as consumers, convincing us we need more youth, vigour, or sex drive to be whole? Since earliest recorded history humans have shown a need to worship and to believe, yet now we see traditional religious systems being challenged and discarded. Some health techniques come complete with a religion or philosophy of hope. Doctors, our traditional western healers, under worsening time pressure as they earn their wages (fee-for-service), find themselves with too little time to provide the answers, offer support, or maintain healthy relationships with their patients.
What are the dangers of alternative therapies? Some diseases are dangerous and require timely investigation and treatment with proven therapies. Some herbal preparations can interfere with traditional medications, making conditions such as diabetes or HIV less responsive to proven medications. Certain substances can mask important symptoms of serious medical conditions. Here’s my advice on complementary and alternative therapies: first check out the credentials of the person offering them. If they don’t have training, experience, and haven’t established a track record of successfully treating people with your condition, run - don’t walk - to the nearest exit. Second, remember, the questions you need answered are:
effectiveness: show me evidence that it works safety: prove that it will not harm me cost: is the potential benefit worth the cost or are there cheaper alternatives with equal effectiveness? And finally, discuss alternative and complementary medicines with your doctor, but be patient with them: it’s nearly impossible to keep up with the latest medical developments as well as the mushrooming volume of complementary and alternative therapies. Your physician might be able to give you helpful advice to guide you on your journey. And when you do decide to use complementary and alternative therapy, for safety’s sake, keep your doctor informed.

Stroke has a new indicator
Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters S. T. R. STROKE IDENTIFICATION: Stroke has a new indicator
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics). She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this.
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the 3 steps, STR. Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. Chicken Soup)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call the emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke Stick out Your Tongue! NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke. A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this shares it with 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
I have done my part. Will you?

Forbidden Rice
The Emperor's Exclusive Grain, Imported from China (the story is that it was only for royalty, not the common people)
Forbidden Rice is fabled to enrich health and ensure longevity. This medium-size heirloom rice is treasured for its delicious roasted nutty taste, soft texture and beautiful deep purple color. Extremely high in a class of flavonoid antioxidants called anthocyanins, Forbidden Rice® is also rich in iron and, according to Chinese herbal medicine, considered to be a blood tonifier. A striking presence on any plate, this once forbidden indulgence is now a wholesome everyday rice. It pairs beautifully with all cuisines - use it steamed plain, in a pilaf, stir-fry, salad or pudding.
As many antioxidants as blueberries? A new study shows that a spoonful of black rice bran or 10 spoonfuls of cooked black rice contains the same amount of antioxidants as a spoonful of fresh blueberries. Click here for more information. For only $0.50 a serving, this rice provides the richest nutritional value, providing a higher level of vitamins, minerals and fiber of any bran rice, as well as a comprehensive range of amino acids, proteins, vegetable fats and essential trace elements needed by the body.
One of the first rices we brought to the US, it took ten years, but now Forbidden Rice® is grown organically for us on hundreds of small family farms in the Black Dragon River (Heilongjiang) region of China's sub-arctic Northeast provinces.
Cooks in only 30 minutes Whole grain and heart healthy High in minerals: magnesium, molybdenum and phosphorus Good daily source of protein, fiber, manganese and complex carbohydrates Gluten- and wheat-free Vegan
This blurb is from an advertisement, so it may be exaggerated, but I'm cooking some for the first time tonight. I'll give you my verdict tomorrow.

I tried the Forbidden rice last night and really liked it; good flavor, beautiful deep purple color that would look fascinating with different combinations and the grains don't stick together as much. DH still prefers jasmine rice, but it is worth a try.
Now here's some news. Yawning May Serve to Cool Brain
If you yawn while reading this, it’s probably not because you’re bored. A team of researchers in Austria may have uncovered the answer to one of science’s most perplexing questions: Why do we yawn? Instead of yawning to get more oxygen into our lungs, or to signal that we’re tired or bored, the new study suggests that yawning may actually help the brain to cool down.
The researchers tracked the yawning behaviors of 120 Austrian volunteers in both the winter and the summer seasons. They asked the volunteers to look at pictures of people yawning, and then had them fill out surveys about how often they yawned or wanted to yawn while viewing the pictures, how much sun exposure they’d had before the survey, how much they had slept the night before and their age. At the same time, researchers measured the air’s temperature and humidity. Volunteers were also asked questions about their usual yawning habits. The researchers found that temperature was the only consistent predictor of how much people yawned. While 41.7% of Austrian participants in the summer yawned during the experiment, only 18.3% of people in the winter did. Participants also reported yawning more during the summer than the winter. The people’s gender, age, the outdoor humidity, the amount of time they’d spent outside and how much sleep they had gotten did not affect how much they yawned.
According to TIME, prior research has shown that brain temperatures temporarily rise before a yawn and decrease right afterward in both humans and in rats. from Dr.Oz.com
Now can anyone explain why I yawn every time I see or hear someone yawn, or even read the word? Could that mean I'm a hothead? Susan

I found this one at MJF! Mary Beth, Okie Farm Girl, posted it on her site www.OklahomaPastryCloth.com. It's hard to come up with new ideas every day and so I'm borrowing and hoping some other Farmgirls will post their info here too!
"It’s tomato season again!! I love, love, love home grown tomatoes. They actually have flavor!! And tomatoes are so good for you. According to Tomatofest.com
• Eating tomatoes, ketchup, tomato sauce and tomato paste-topped pizza more than two times a week can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 21 to 43 percent according to Dr. Edward Giovannucci of the Harvard University School of Public Health. • “The only nutrient that turned out to have significant preventative value (against prostate cancer) was lycopene,” writes Dr. Giovannucci who also found that lycopene was most efficiently absorbed into the body when accompanied by dietary fats (lipids). • “Cooking tomatoes in oil encourages intestinal absorption and results in a two-to-threefold rise in plasma lycopene concentrations,” • Men who eat two or more servings of tomato products average a 35 percent reduction in prostate cancer risk. • Tomato products are beneficial in aggressive cancers that have also spread to other parts of the body. • The best food sources of lycopene according to the Tomato Research Council in New York City: ( Amount of lycopene in one ounce) Tomato Sauce, Spaghetti Sauce, Ketchup (5 mg); Tomato Soup, Canned Tomatoes, Tomato Juice, Vegetable Juice (3 mg); Minestrone Soup, Vegetable Soup, Pink Grapefruit (1 mg) • Lycopene helps women guard against cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia, (CIN), tumorous tissue growth in the cervix according to research from the University of Illinois at Chicago. • Lycopene is a powerful inhibitor of the growth of breast, endometrium (inner lining of the uterus) and lung cancer cells. • Tomatoes are good for the eyes. Lycopene, the most abundant carotenoid in the blood serum, was found to be the key antioxidant that guards against ARMD ( Age-Related Macular Degeneration), a condition that may cause blindness. • Tomatoes are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium and Potassium • Lycopene is an inhibitor to heart disease.
So there you go…eat your tomatoes and you’ll outlive Methuselah…well…maybe."

I know several people who have problems with sleep apnea, which raises the risk of heart disease, and use a CPAP (Continuous positive Airway Pressure) machine at night. According to information in the July issue of Readers Digest there is now a new implant that could help some patients who don't tolerate CPAP. It is a pacemaker-like device that is implanted surgically to stimulate a nerve below the tongue a prevents obstruction of the airway. In a 12 month study it raised blood oxygen levels in 2/3rds of 124 patients.

Thanks for the encouragement, Dawn. Posting encourages me to keep learning and share with others at the same time.
I found a great article in the July 2014 Good Housekeeping Magazine, titled "Is It Urgent or an Emergency". It's about how to decide if you need to go to an urgent care or an emergency room when you aren't sure about a problem. I'll spread it over a few days here.

GO TO AN URGENT CARE CLINIC if it is more than 1/4th inch deep, can't be pulled closed easily or is an area with a lot of movement, for example, near a knuckle. HEAD TO THE ER if it won't stop bleeding or is on your face, lips, eyelids or any other area where you may need a plastic surgeon.

Is It Urgent or an Emergency? #2
If you have a TWISTED ANKLE
GO TO AN URGENT CARE CLINIC if you have swelling and bruising and you're worried that you've broken a bone or torn a ligament.
HEAD TO THE ER if your foot or ankle looks deformed, or a bone has popped through the skin, or it looks like it might.

If you have bites
GO TO AN URGENT CARE CLINIC if you have an animal bite-or a bug bite that's causing a minor allergic reaction such as general itching, hives or a rash.
HEAD TO THE ER if you have a bite from a snake or a possibly rabid animal; you have multiple bites or your bug bite is triggering a major allergic reaction.

If you have a cough
GO TO AN URGENT CARE CLINIC if your cough is getting worse, or you have some shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
HEAD TO THE ER if you have moderate to severe shortness of breath; you're coughing up blood or pink, frothy mucus; or you have a high fever.

If you have burns
GO TO AN URGENT CARE CLINIC if you have a very painful burn with redness or blistering that is not near the mouth, nose or eyes.
HEAD TO THE ER if you've been burned near the mouth, nose, or eyes or have severe burns that leave skin charred, pale or leathery.
