Enjoy Ginger

The volatile oils in ginger have long made it a useful herbal remedy for nasal and chest congestion. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes; and strain. Add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed.

Take responsibility for your own health care.

The average 65 year old American takes 12 prescription drugs. Besides the side effects of each, there are drug interactions possible. Be sure that every doctor you see knows about ALL other doctors, prescriptions, supplements, etc. Find a pharmacy you trust and get you medications where they also have that information. They can know more than some doctors and let you know of concerns!

Take Responsibility for your own health care. Part 2

When you, or someone under your care, get a prescription READ the papers that come with them from the pharmacy, especially anything about side effects. Often if you ask your doctor he/she will mention one or two that are most common but they deal with so many different meds that many times they just can't memorize all the possibilities. If you don't have the original information or you didn't get it, check online using the name of the med, for example, Plavix side effects.

Our neighbor developed a serious cough last spring. When her doctor didn't get results he sent her to a respiratory specialist, who sent her on to an allergist. Then, in a conversation with us, she mentioned how she had been sleeping in a recliner for weeks trying to relieve the coughing. Something prompted DH to ask if she was on blood pressure meds. It seems he is on the same one, and every time he sees his doctor he is asked if he has been coughing. It is a frequent side effect for that particular med. It turns out that she was taking that med and when she went back and got a different medication the coughing gradually stopped. All her doctors had missed it!

Take Responsibility for Your Health Care, Part 3

If you are taking a generic medication pay attention if the pills look different after a refill!

My DH had to try several meds for high blood pressure before his doc tor found one that worked for him.
We get meds at a pharmacy that is part of a chain of grocery stores and found that they change sources of meds whenever there is a price change. DH found that whenever the pills looked different (came from a different source) he had stomach upsets. They insisted that the pills were the same BUT there is an allowable range on medication, and even though they have the same name and are SUPPOSED to be comparable, there can be minor differences. He had to check out several pharmacies before he found a place that guaranteed it to be from the same manufacturer and has had no problems since.

Pay attention!

Go Fish

If you suffer from dry eyes, up your seafood intake. Salmon, sardines, and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids, which the body uses to produce tears, among other things. Research suggests that people who consume higher amounts of these fats are less likely to have dry eyes.

This is being shared with a little smile. By the way, our doctor suggests the red wine for HIGH blood pressure.

Grandma knows best!

For better digestion I drink beer, in the case of appetite loss I drink white wine, in the case of low blood pressure I drink red wine, in the case of high blood pressure I drink scotch, and when I have a cold I drink schnapps.”

“When do you drink water?”

“I’ve never been that sick!”

Thanks for posting these Cindy! I think I'll follow that last one, for sure! And I am glad to know about the fish oils for dry eyes as I sometimes suffer from that problem.

Congratulations to Minnesota, the first state to ban Triclosans! On a negative note, it doesn't take effect until 2017. Got to protect those manufacturers?????? So we better watch out for ourselves and our loved ones now!

I found this in a local paper last week, in a little column by Doctors Oz and Roizer.

TCC, TCS Could Harm

... the Center for Environmental Security is spreading the word that the use of at-home germ-killers, like Triclocarbon (TCC) and Triclosan(TCS), poses serious risks. These chemicals, found in more than 2,000 consumer products such as soaps, toothpaste, detergents, clothing, carpets, paints, plastics, toys, school supplies and even pacifiers, don't make you healthier. They pollute the water supply, can disrupt your fertility, and may disturb immune function.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says these chemicals are found in the blood of 75% of Americans.
Now the Food and Drug Administration is asking soap manufacturers to either show that TCC and TCS are safe or remove them from products.

Discover Why Honey Is Still The Best Antibiotic
By L.J. Devon (Natural News)

Conventional antibiotics are overprescribed and overconsumed. They are given out like parade candy, tossed out to anyone waving their hands. ...

Conventional Antibiotics Are Making Us Sicker In The Long Run...
Doctors carelessly prescribe antibiotics for viral infections, which is useless since antibiotics are only effective for breaking up bacterial infections. To make matters worse, over-prescription and over-consumption make future infections harder to fight, since antibiotics deplete the good bacteria in the gut...
As this disturbing trend continues, scientists are looking for simpler answers. Researchers from the Salve Regina University in Newport, Rode Island, are rediscovering the reasons why raw honey is still one of the best natural antibiotics around to this day.

Honey Fights Infections On Multiple Levels And Doesn't Promote Resistant Bacteria
Lead author Susan M. Meschwitz, Ph.D., presented the findings at the 247th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. She reports, "The unique property of honey lies in its ability to fight infection on multiple levels, making it more difficult for bacteria to develop resistance."
Meschwitz said that honey uses a combination of weapons, including polyphenols, hydrogen peroxide and an osmotic effect. Honey is practically an ambidextrous fighter, using multiple modalities to kill bacteria.
One of those fighting methods is its osmosis effect. This effect comes from honey's high-sugar concentration. In this process, water is drawn from the bacteria cells, leaving the pathogens no option but to dehydrate and die off.

Honey Breaks Up Bacteria By Destroying Its Modes Of Communication
Honey also possesses properties that stop the formation of biofilms. These slimy biofilms are bacteria communities which harbor diseases. Honey keeps these biofilms from congregating by breaking up a bacterial communication process called quorum sensing. By breaking up this process, honey stops the bacteria from communicating and expanding their viability. Without this communication mode, the bacteria cannot release the toxins that increase their ability to cause disease.
Meschwitz said that, by disrupting quorum sensing, the virulent behavior of bacteria is weakened, "rendering the bacteria more susceptible to conventional antibiotics".

Doctors Should Prescribe Honey First And Antibiotics As The Last Resort

Honey is so powerful for destroying bacteria that it should be the first mode of treatment when treating a bacterial illness. Doctors should prescribe honey first, since it attacks bacteria from multiple angles. Prescribed antibiotics should be the "alternative" therapy or the last resort. Honey is more powerful because it prevents the formation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Conventional antibiotics fail because they only target the essential growth processes of bacteria. This allows bacteria to build up a resistance over time, while the user also destroys the good bacteria in their gut.
Honey works much differently, breaking down the bacteria's communication processes while dehydrating the bacteria's structures through an osmosis effect. On top of that, honey is filled with powerful antioxidants in the form of polyphenols. Meschwitz adds, "Several studies have demonstrated a correlation between the non-peroxide antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of honey and the presence of honey phenolics."
Honey Is Also Antiviral, Anti-fungal And Full Of Antioxidants
Not only is honey anti-bacterial, but it is antiviral and anti-fungal. These properties alone make it more powerful than conventional antibiotics. Honey can target undetected fungal conditions that may be at the root cause of perpetual illness.
Meschwitz said that her team of researchers has been measuring the level of antioxidant activity of honey. "We have separated and identified the various antioxidant polyphenol compounds. In our antibacterial studies, we have been testing honey's activity against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, among others."

EAT BANANAS
People whose diets are rich in potassium may be less prone to high blood pressure. Besides reducing sodium and taking other heart healthy steps, eat potassium-packed picks such as bananas, cantaloupes and bananas.

Susan, sounds like researchers are discovering and documenting the benefits of honey and reasons we NEED it since antiobiotics are not working so well anymore, just at the time when honeybees are in jeopardy due to colony collapse disorder. Since CCD may be linked to use of certain insecticides on crops and landscapes, neonicotinoids(?) it is just one more reason to buy organic.

...if you’re a standard American eater, your taste buds may take some time to adjust to the tang of sourdough. It is just that tang, however, that gives sourdough grain preparation all its nutritional might. Sourdough bread preparation improves nutrition by:
*pre-digesting starches, making the bread more easily digestible
*lowering insulin response/improving glucose tolerance
*protecting Vitamin B1 from the damage of the heat of baking
*breaking down gluten, which may result in a bread that gluten-sensitive people can eat
*activating phytase to hydrolyze (dissolve) the phytates, thus freeing up minerals such as:
zinc
iron
magnesium
copper
phosphorus

Why Sourdough?

Because sourdough leavening works much slower than commercial yeast, the bread dough ends up sitting around longer. The lactic acid creates an ideal pH for phytase activity, which decreases phytates by 62% (compared to 38% in yeast breads). I am convinced that sourdough is THE most nutritious way to prepare grains.

Brenda,
Thanks for the comment about bees. The decline of bee populations is serious business, not just because of the medical possibilities of using honey and pollen, but also because of our food supply itself!

Here are some quotes from several sites, about the importance of bees;

"One well-worn, and probably accurate, estimate says that one-third of the human diet can be traced directly, or indirectly, to bee pollination. This estimate is probably more accurate for human diets in developed countries."

"About 130 agricultural plants in the United States are pollinated by bees, and the annual value of honey bee pollination to U.S. agriculture is estimated at over $9 billion."

"In addition to agricultural crops, the honeybee pollinates many of the native plants that serve as habitat and food sources for our wildlife across the nation, helping sustain the vigor and diversity of our environment."

"One of every three bites of food eaten worldwide depends on pollinators, especially bees, for a successful harvest. "

There are a lot of theories about why the bee population is in such trouble. It may be because of many different reasons; insecticides, GMO crops that kill any insect, good or bad, that contacts a plant, climate change, and some people suggest that the change in the earth's magnetic poles over time is affecting their navigation.

I agree, buy organic, or your own safety, but also work to combat the potential threats we can. Write or talk to your legislators about your concerns, they aren't scientists but they do listen if enough people contact them. Big corporations making millions don't listen unless there is legislation forcing them to do so. Sign petitions against GMO crops and insecticides. Get involved!

Well child visits are important to check for medical and developmental issues, and help parents and children form a relationship with their health care provider.

allinahealth.org recommends visits at:
2 weeks
2 months
4 months
6 months
9 months
12 months
15 months
18 months
2 years
Once a year after age 2

My daughter's friend found out at her daughter's 6 month check-up that the child had a rare form of eye cancer. They had to remove the eye but it saved her life!

I have just found this thread, what wonderful information everyone is giving. Thank you Susan for starting the thread.
I had a physical about a month ago as I had been feeling poorly for sometime,I have IBS, Acid Reflux, Psoriasis, Arthritis, High Blood Pressure etc, and everything was acting up and out of wrack! I went to a female doctor, she is new, she actually listened to me and how I was feeling, she did a full panel of blood work for everything, found out I am allergic to wheat like many Americans and did not know it,have high Cholesterll and am pre diabetic. I am now on a totally Gluten Free, Organic Diet eating no processed foods, it has been 4 weeks today and I feel so much better, and have actully lost a few pounds. It has been a big adjustment for me as I am almost 59 years old and raised to eat a certain way, I have had to totally change the way I think when it comes to eating, the harder sell was convincing hubby. But, he is handling it well and sees such a difference in me and the way I feel, like anything else it gets easier as time goes on.
Thanks for listening girls, any help or suggestion for this new way of eating and life style I would appreciate any information, recipes etc I can get.
Have a wonderful day everyone.
Hugs,
Debbie

Welcome Debbie,
I'm glad you've found a doctor who is helping you find the info you need to make your life better! Many times health issues can be improved or even resolved by the right diet, drinking enough water, exercise, and rest. We often work so hard to make our homes clean, pretty and welcoming, but take our bodies care for granted!

Take better care of your eyes

Take a 20-Second Computer Break
Staring at a computer (or any digital screen) won’t hurt your eyes, but it can make them feel tired and dry. Surprisingly, we blink about half as often when we’re looking at a screen. Follow the 20/20/20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Also, place your screen so it’s about 25 inches away and slightly below eye level. Cut glare by moving light sources or using a screen filter.

With Medication, Timing May Be Everything
The instructions on the pill bottle may simply say "once a day."But because of you circadian rhythm-the biological clock that governs sleep, hormone productin, and other processes-your body doesn't respond to medication in the same way at a different time of the day.
...
Best in the Morning
Depression meds
Osteoporosis meds
Best Around Dinnertime
Heartburn meds
Allergy meds
Best Before Bedtime
Cholesterol meds
Blood pressure meds
Timed to Symptoms
Osteoarthritis meds

Info from Reader's Digest, July 2014

My DH was having trouble adjusting to a new med, taken once a day. When he complained, a nurse told him to take it in the evening and was amazed that neither his doctor of pharmacist had shared that info.
The problems disappeared when he switched the time he took it each day.

Foot Problem Culprit: Flip-Flops
Flip-flops offer very little protection. The risk of getting splinters or other foot injuries is higher when the feet are so exposed. People with diabetes should not wear flip-flops, because simple cuts and scrapes can lead to serious complications. In addition, many flip-flops provide no arch support. Like ballet flats, they can aggravate plantar fasciitis and cause problems with the knees, hips, or back.

Protect your feet. Flip flops may feel cooler on a hot day but without offering protection or support.
They are not good for kids at play either.

Not to mention one's feet tend to slip around in them. Tripping over your own feet while wearing them or trying to "pick up the pace" in them can definitely be detrimental to your health! They sure are cute, though... Same age old women's shoe problem: fashionably fun, but really bad for your feet! Hugs - Nini

First 5 Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

It's effective for pretty much anything—your skin, your hair, your house, and even your pets can benefit from its qualities. Raw, organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized, apple cider vinegar is so much more than a salad dressing!

1. Apple cider vinegar can detoxify your home.

It's made from apple juice and is fermented to hard apple cider. It's then fermented a second time to become apple cider vinegar. By using ACV in lieu of other products, we instantly decrease the consumption of unnatural chemicals in our homes and daily lives.

2. It can make your hair shine.

Apple cider vinegar can be used as a rinse for your hair after shampooing, and will boost your hair's body and shine. I recommend recycling an old shampoo bottle, then filling it with 1/2 a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a cup of cold water. Pour the solution through your hair after shampooing several times a week for dramatic results

3. Natural apple cider vinegar regulates the pH of your skin.

Dilute ACV with two parts water, and spread the concoction over your face with a cotton ball to replace your current toner. You can do this at night after washing, and in the morning before you apply your moisturizer. A dab of apple cider vinegar can also be left on the skin overnight to fade age spots or acne scars.

It's also a recommended agent for warts. For warts, soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar, then fasten the cotton ball over the wart with a Band-Aid overnight. The skin may swell some as it reacts with the solution. However, the wart will fall off. Once it falls off, the treatment should be continued for a few more days, to make sure the wart doesn't return.

4. It can remove stains from teeth.

Rub teeth directly with apple cider vinegar, and rinse with water.

5. It can soothe sunburnt skin.

Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath, and soak for 10 minutes to eliminate discomfort from sunburn.
