Thanks for taking the time to share all of this information, Susan. I couldn't bring myself to buy jelly beans today because of the food dyes and additives! Reading your posts definitely helps me to remember to be more aware of what we eat! |

Oral health: A window to your overall health
Taking good care of your teeth and getting dental checkups are important in more ways than many of us have thought.
We know that without brushing our teeth, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Your oral health might affect, be affected by, or contribute to various diseases and conditions, including:
Endocarditis. Endocarditis is an infection of the inner lining of your heart (endocardium). Endocarditis typically occurs when bacteria or other germs from another part of your body, such as your mouth, spread through your bloodstream and attach to damaged areas in your heart. Cardiovascular disease. Some research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. Pregnancy and birth. Periodontitis has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. Diabetes. Diabetes reduces the body's resistance to infection — putting the gums at risk. Gum disease appears to be more frequent and severe among people who have diabetes. Research shows that people who have gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels. HIV/AIDS. Oral problems, such as painful mucosal lesions, are common in people who have HIV/AIDS. Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis — which causes bones to become weak and brittle — might be linked with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss. Alzheimer's disease. Tooth loss before age 35 might be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Other conditions. Other conditions that might be linked to oral health include Sjogren's syndrome — an immune system disorder that causes dry mouth — and eating disorders.

On the news today there was a statement that 43% of children with ADD or ADHD had parent who had used Roundup Herbicide. Use organic gardening techniques and don't risk poisoning yourself or others for a perfect carpet of green lawn.

Avoid Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite which is found in hotdogs, bacon, ham, luncheon meat, cured meats, corned beef, smoked fish or any other type of processed meat.
Sodium Nitrate is the chemical that turns meats bright red but it's highly carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system. There, it forms a variety of nitrosamine compounds that enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc with a number of internal organs: the liver and the pancreas in particular. This toxic chemical is linked to many cancers.

Old Advice Worry about sun exposure during the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
New Rule Early mornings and late afternoons can be dangerous too. ... But a recent study found that long term exposure of the eyes to UV rays - which can cause eyelid cancers, as well as cataracts and other eye conditions - occurs early (8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) and late (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.) when the suns rays are more parallel to the eye. Wear sunglasses to protect you eyes and the skin around them, eve if it's not super sunny.

Avoid BHA and BHT in your food. These are used as a preservative in potato chips, gum, cereal, frozen sausages, enriched rice, lard, shortening, candy and jello to keep foods from changing color, flavor or becoming rancid. They effect the neurological system of the brain, alter behavior and have the potential to cause cancer. They are oxidants which form cancer-causing reactive compounds in the body.

LONG AGO About 2,000 years ago, the Greek physician Hippocrates noticed that sedentary lives led to various illnesses. Those who walked more stayed well longer. So he often prescribed exercise. TODAY Dozens of studies show that even 30 minutes of walking a day lowers your risk for diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. A recent National Cancer Institute study on more than 650,000 people found that those who walked briskly for just 150 minutes a week gained an average of 3.4 years of life expectancy. "There's no drug that can give you those kinds of benefits." said Brian Clement PhD, director of the Hippocrates Health Institute.

Walking is great exercise. My employer gave everyone a free pedometer at the beginning of the year and I average about 15,000 steps a day when I'm at work. that's about four to five miles. On days I don't work, it's less. I also like to do stretching exercises like yoga. I've always had active jobs--well, once I had a desk job and lasted about two weeks. I gotta move. I'm happier that way. Cindy

How to Calm a Sore Throat
If water mixed with lemon or honey doesn't work, mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon salt into 1 cup of hot water and gargle. Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, and scientists think it has properties that fight many serious diseases.

A High Note for Happiness British researchers recently surveyed 375 people who sang in a choir, sang alone, or played on a sports team. All the activities contributed to greater emotional well-being, but people in choirs reported feeling happier than those who belted out tunes solo. Chorus members also rated their choirs as more meaningful social groups than athletes did their sports teams. The physical synchrony - acting in time with others - of choral singing could promote feelings or unit.

Health Benefits of a Garden by the editors of PureHealthMD
Imagine walking out of your next doctor’s visit carrying a prescription to grow more produce. While this might seem unusual, it cannot be argued that gardens yield baskets full of nutritional food, fit for diets of any age. Local gardening, and the resulting local food communities, may hold even more answers to the economic and health care disasters we currently face.... Gardening can help encourage youth to try a greater range of fruits and vegetables [Source: Robinson-O'brien]. Studies show that gardening promotes physical health, mental health through relaxation and satisfaction, and better nutrition [Source: Wakefield]. This backyard pastime has been shown to help prevent dementia in seniors [Source: Fabrigoule]. It allows for more whole foods as well, in place of processed options... Gardening is a simple practice that could be taught and promoted worldwide. It's commonly noted that local gardening brings about a better sense of community [Source: Wakefield, Lombard, Armstrong]. All of us could benefit from making it a social priority... Relaxation and stress reduction could be one of the best benefits. Given that antidepressants are some of the most commonly prescribed medications, a prescription for some flowers, plants or tomatoes might be a refreshing change. Researchers commonly note the positive mental outlook obtained by those participating in gardening [Source: Wakefield, Lombard, Armstrong]. A stronger connection to the earth is also noted. Gardens may even help with healing. Hospitals and treatment centers are encouraged to “go green” to help lower stress and improve social interaction in their facilities [Source: Irvine]...

BOOST YOUR BRAINPOWER Exercising improves both your physical and mental fitness. A Harvard study of people ages 18 to 45 found that the more time adults spent exercising, the more brain tissue they had in zones involved in memory. "For most people, the memory-related brain areas start shrinking at a rake of 1% to 2% per year after they turn 50," says lead author William D.S. Killgore, Ph.D. "But you may be able to slow-or even prevent-the decline with regular exercise." Aim for at least 150 minutes a week (break them up however you'd like), experts say and keep it up as you get older.

More and more diseases are developing drug resistant strains. A lot of this is blamed on misuse of medications. To help with this problem, remember: 1. Do NOT ask your doctor for antibiotics. He/she SHOULD know more than we do about it. Some give in just to keep things moving. 2. Take meds as prescribed, for as LONG as prescribed. When you feel better and stop early you help surviving bacteria to develop resistance. 3. Do not use anyone else's meds.
Other factors for the development of disease resistant bacteria include too much of antibacterial soaps, cleaners and wipes and the use of antibiotics in raising meat animals.

This isn't exactly a hint but IS health news. I found out yesterday that the world famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester Mn is doing research on how hearts respond to prayer, spirituality, mindfulness, and poetry. There is a lot beyond the scientific knowledge!

High Protein Breakfast Foods – Ideas and Foods What will you eat for the most important meal of the day? Will your breakfast include high protein breakfast foods?
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because we are going to feed the tummy after a long break of eight to six hours. In addition, all of your body’s functions have been getting great rest during the past 6-8 hours.
Therefore, they are now ready for some fuel to do the jobs they were designed to do. Otherwise, your body slows down all of your systems and leaves you feeling lethargic. That is why you need high protein breakfast foods. Think about these possibilities: 1. Protein shakes 2. Eggs 3. Dairy products 4. Nuts 5. Cheese and omelette 6. Soy products 7. Fish 8. Traditional Breakfasts of sausage, ham, bacon and eggs.

The Benefits of Yogurt What's tasty, easy, and has lots of health benefits? Yogurt!First off, your body needs to have a healthy amount of ''good'' bacteria in the digestive tract, and many yogurts are made using active, good bacteria. One of the words you’ll be hearing more of in relation to yogurt is ''probiotics.''
Probiotic, which literally means ''for life,'' refers to living organisms that can result in a health benefit when eaten in adequate amounts.(Keep in mind that the only yogurts that contain probiotics are those that say "live and active cultures" on the label.)
Yogurt comes from milk. So yogurt eaters will also get a dose of animal protein (about 9 grams per 6-ounce serving), plus several other nutrients found in dairy foods, like calcium, vitamin B-2, B-12, potassium, and magnesium.
Benefit No. 1: Yogurt May Help Prevent Osteoporosis
Benefit No. 2: Yogurt May Reduce the Risk of High Blood Pressure
Benefit No. 3: Yogurt With Active Cultures Helps the Gut
Benefit No. 4: Yogurt With Active Cultures May Discourage Vaginal Infections
Benefit No. 5: Yogurt May Help You Feel Fuller

Eat Tomatoes! Tomato is a superstar in the fruit and veggie pantheon. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful cancer fighter. They’re also rich in vitamin C. The good news is that cooked tomatoes are also nutritious, so use them in pasta, soups and casseroles, as well as in salads. The British Thoracic Society says that tomatoes and apples can reduce your risk of asthma and chronic lung diseases. Both contain the antioxidant quercetin. To enjoy the benefits, eat five apples a week or a tomato every other day.

This post deals with emotional health.
Practical, Workable Fearbusting Tips By Susan Jeffers
Accept that fear will never go away. The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it. Accomplishment brings self-esteem, not the other way around.
Learn to hold fear from a position of power, not a position of pain. For some, the fear is totally irrelevant. For others, it creates a state of paralysis. The former hold their fear from a position of power (choice, energy, and action), and the latter hold it from a position of pain (helplessness, depression, and paralysis). You can move yourself away from the pain position and to the power position. Two suggestions:
•Replace "pain" words with "power" words. Don't say I can't. Say I won't... Don't say I should . Say I could.. Don't say I hope. Say I know. Doesn't "I know I'll get a job" sound much better than "I hope I'll get a job"?) Your sense of self will change with a more powerful vocabulary, and so will your presence in the world.
• Every day, take a risk that expands your comfort zone . Remember the three miracle words: I'll handle it . Tell yourself I'll handle it a hundred times a day. Write it on a note and tape it to your mirror. Imprint it on your subconscious. It will free you from the need to constantly agonize over the "what ifs" and the need to control the behavior of everyone around you.
Bring back Pollyanna. Keep in mind that over 90 percent of what we worry about never happens. That means our negative worries have only a small chance of being correct. Mathematically, isn't it more realistic to be positive?
Use affirmations to become more positive. Affirmations- I notice all the beauty in my life or I am spreading love into this world or I am finding the perfect job for me -are very powerful tools. Repeat them daily. Put positive quotes around your room: "Ships in harbor are safe, but that's not what ships are built for" (John Shedd) or "The best way out is always through" (Helen Keller).
All decisions are no-lose decisions. Let go of outcomes. Do your best and let it go. What happens will happen, and no matter what the outcome, the experience will help you grow.
Embrace the concept of the "Grid of Life." Make your life so rich that the absence of one part of it doesn't wipe you out.
Every day, focus on your "Higher Self." To move yourself from pain to power relative to fear, it is necessary to move yourself from the Lower Self (the weakest part of who you are) to the Higher Self (the strongest part of who you are).
Commit yourself to pushing through the fear and becoming more than you are at the present moment. The you that could be is absolutely colossal. You don't need to change what you are doing-simply commit to learning how to bring to whatever you do in life the loving and powerful energy of your Higher Self.

My son-in-law travels a lot for work. When he got home from the airport yesterday he scooped up his 2 1/2 year old son and headed for the back yard for some play time. He told me that he'd heard that when a person is on a plane an electrical charge builds up in their body and the best way to get rid of it is to walk barefoot on grass, as soon as you can after landing.
I don't know that I'd take that too seriously, but I enjoy the idea from a different viewpoint. Really getting back to earth seems like a great way to de-stress after travel especially with someone you love.

GET YOUR VEGGIE SERVINGS Doctors Oz and Rolzen
"The benefits of veggies is astounding. Seven servings slash you risk of death by 42%. Fresh vegetables offer the best protection; each daily serving reduces your overall risk of death by 16% and each serving of fruit by 4 percent."
Considering that we all have a risk of death of 100% long term, I don't know quite where they get these numbers, but it is clear that eating a variety of vegetable is good for our health.
It can seem overwhelming to try to get that many servings in a day.
Think of dipping carrot and celery sticks in yogurt or 1/4 cup hummus as a snack.
A salad lunch of 2 cups greens, 1/4 cup tomato, 2 Tbls avocado, and 1/4 cup blueberries could add up to 3 1/2 servings.
Mixed steamed or roasted veggies could add two servings to dinner.
