Thank you, Catherine.

Can't wait to make the bread that Aunt Jenny talks about. Sounds so yummy. Than you so much for your generosity!

I would love to have some of your sour dough starter. Can I still be included?

Me too Catherine....can I still be included? When we lived in California, we'd go to San Francisco and get sourdough bread about once a month. Have'nt had GOOD sourdough bread since we moved to Colo! It sure would be great if I could make my own. Do you include instructions? Thanks! Luzy

I've always made my own starters out of yeast and flour, so getting this pototoe starter was the first for me, just as easy to work with but did noticed it didn't have much "sour" flavor to it, I'm sure it will in time. If anyone wants a easy flour starter recipe, just let me know, like the pototoe it can be made into bread the next day or wait for more of a stronger flavor. It's so easy!

Sue -- I'd love to have the flour starter recipe. Can you post here? Thanks. I personally don't care for the real sour taste so I'd be glad to be able to make bread right away.

Check out my article on sourdough bread at my herbalhomestead blog listed below, there you will find the easy starter and bread recipe. YES, Catherine does include wonderful recipes with her starter and she is the best, but for those who want to try another starter while they wait for Catherines can check it out. Bless her heart has sent out so many! Keep a eye on your mailbox Catherine!

Sqrl / Melissa!! Yes Yes, I did!! I'm so glad you posted about it because I was too embarrased to bring it up.....The package was ripped apart by my girls when they saw it was from a farmgirl.....they were so excited. I was not home when the incident occured and all evidence of original source was gone. CSI couldn't even figure this one out.

I love my "Farmgirl at heart" embroidered hanging...stick and all!! It hangs in my living room. You've gotten a lot of prayers because when it catches my eye I ask God to Bless the gal that made it!

Gals, the starter needed another day of "brewing" so, they did not get mailed on Wed. I'll make it to the Post Office today.

Blessings
Catherine

Sue -- I read your recipe. I'm going to try it. Is this something that you can keep going or is just for one time batch?

Glad you mentioned that Kay, I forgot to include that, yes you can keep it alive by adding equal portions of flour and water, usually just a half of cup will do the trick. Have fun with it and enjoy!!

Just in case anyone was wondering ... you don't have to send liquid sourdough culture, you can dry the culture and store it in air tight containers. It's aalso a wonderful way to keep your sourdough if you start getting too much and can't share it right away! All you need is a tablespoon or so of dried starter. I spread starter between two pieces of wax paper and let it dry, then grind it in my coffee/herb grinder.

One of the sourdoughs I have is 159 years old and can be traced back to a 1847 Oregon Trail Ride. The history is here:
http://home.att.net/~carlsfriends/OTbrochure.html

eta: there are sourdough recipes on this site (including one for a bread machine) and I think sour dough english muffins

It works very well. It's how our pioneers kept their sour dough going across America.

Hi Melissa!

In reference to the instructions: I told Jenny a while back that I sometimes talk to people like I'm teaching kindergarten all over again. I was afraid I'd be too elementary in my explanations and y'all would think I was some goofball. Glad you liked them!

Catherine - if you're still mailing them out, would you put me on the list? All of the 'girls here have had such success with your starter "babies!" You should be one proud "mama!"

Catherine,
I would love some of your starter if you are still up to it! Did you ever expect this kind of turnout? Haven't had starter in decades and have missed it. Thank you so much for the offer.

You gals are all added to the list. I've doubled my starter from 4 cups to 8 cups and should be able to send out more than 3 or 4 at a time now. Just waiting for it to age a bit more.

Libbie, I'll still email you when your time comes and you can let me know if you've gotten it from Jenny yet.

I've got about 50 dinner size rolls baking right now...can't you smell the aroma? I'm bringing some up to the feed store for free tasting to drum up some orders.

Blessings

Catherine, it came yesterday, and I'm beyond excited!!! It traveled perfectly (in a cereal box; aren't you creative?) and arrived intact. The fragrance is wonderful!!! Now I have a bunch of questions about it.

I see your basic bread recipe has a half a cup of sugar in it, and the starter has a half a cup. If I take out half of the starter, I'm getting a quarter cup of sugar there, plus a half a cup in the recipe. Three quarters of a cup is a lot for me, if the recipe makes two loaves. I generally make two at a time, and use just a quarter cup for both. Do you figure reducing the sugar will interfere with the sponge? Or should I just shut up and try it?

I'm assuming that every time I remove starter, I replace it with potato, water, and sugar? What if I want to use more starter? Do I double the water, sugar, and potato?

Also, if you have to keep it covered loosely (which makes good sense!) how do you cope with evaporation if you don't use it for 14 days?

I added my first starter last night, and this morning it smelled like pure heaven! Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! I'm so stoked!
