I just finished reading through all of Jan Karon's Mitford series. Love, love, love those books! Now I've started on The Chronicles of Narnia. And I'm halfway through A Child From The Sea by Elizabeth Goudge but don't know if I'll finish it because it gets so sad at the end.

The Mermaids Singing was pretty good...not a re-read one though. I am going to start a new book probably today. Just got "High Tide in Tuscon" by Barbara Kingsolver in the mail on Saturday...it is a collection of short stories...so that is my next book I think. Unless something really good comes in the mail today...then it could change..haha

I'm reading "eat, pray love" I'm only on the 3rd chapter, and I haven't really formed an opinion about it yet....not sure if it will live up to the hype.

Hi. I am just finishing up with Woodswoman: living alone in the adirondack wilderness. I am enjoying it. Has anyone read this book and also Woodswoman II? It is by Anne Labastille. Wondering if I should read part II. Also I would like to read A Place in the Woods, by helen Hoover. it sounds good. kim

I have had a real good run on books. You know how sometimes you just can't find a good one? Well four in a row all good. Might be a record. The one I'm reading now is "DOWN THE COMMON" A year in the life of a medieval woman. Boy Glad I didn't live then. I got so involved with the family in the story that I was dreaming about them last night. NANCY JO

Nancy Jo, Have you read all the quilter books by Jennifer Chiavereni? I am working my way through Circle of Quilters. I liked the last one called Sugar Camp Quilt.

Nancy Jo, Your book, Down the Common, that you mentioned gets some rave reviews from Amazon, i'm going to have to check that one out when i get to the library again, it sounds quite fascinating. I just finished reading a whodunit by peter Tremayne, it's set in 7th century ireland, and was a really good read. The title slips my brain at the moment, but apparently it is a series, which is king of fun. I got it at a yard sale, I'll have to check the library for more titles. My mother used to call me "the book eater" when i was little. I realized I'd raised another book eater when my daughter, shortly before her eighth birthday, clutched a library book to her chest, looked up at me and said " Is this book still in print?" Her grandmother got it for her for her birthday. It's a wonderful story called The Mousehole Cat, with luscious illustrations by Nicola Bayley. it is about a littole village in Cornwall called Mousehole, and a local sailor named Tom Bawden and his cat. My son loved thi s book as well. Sorry, just had to stick a plug in there, cause I know there are lots of girls on this forum with children in their lives. Has anyone hear ever read the Moomintroll books with their kids? Another sweet set of books from Sweden. Sorry, I just get so excited about books, my constant childhood companion and friend to this day....Karin

I just read an interesting nonfiction book, "Farewell, My Subaru" by Doug Fine. It's about trying to live "off the grid" in New Mexico, using solar panels for heating & electricity and used cooking oil to power his vehicle, along with raising goats, gardening, etc. It was a great, quick read, and pretty thought-provoking, too.

I am a Language Arts teacher for 8th grade, so I read a ton of adolescent lit...I just finished a set considered the "Twilight Series"...oh wow! They are written by a woman who was a SAHM who literally dreamed about the story she has written. To say the least, I am enthralled by this story. Usually, I am a "classics" girl, who enjoys a mature read, but now I can't wait for the final book in August...then it's back to Jane Austen!!

I'm reading Poe's Cat, by Brenda Walker. It's a nice book so far--beautifully written.

I finally broke down and read that Diana Gabaldon book Outlander. My brother in law (!) raves about her, so I figured it couldn't be the typical romance novel I had assumed. Well, my feelings are mixed. I liked the unconventional story and the characters. But having been a big fan of Robert Louis Stevenson in junior high, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was reading a sexed up and medievalized version of Kidnapped. I enjoyed it for the most part, but during the middle of the book especially, where it's one love scene after another, I found myself thinking "This lady's supposed to be a nurse. If she and her man don't give it a rest pretty soon they're going to have to worry about bedsores." Now, I know these books have a rabid following, so I hope nobody will be upset by my minor quibbles. I didn't say I wasn't going to read the rest of the series! |

Samantha..my oldest daughter and all her friends have loved the twilight series and I still havn't read most of it..just skimmed each book before she read it and made sure to ask a friend who loved them how she thought they would be for my almost 14 year old and she told me about them..I may end up reading them some time..you never know. I am reading Karen Harper's "Baby Farm" right now...lots of suspense..pretty good too. I like her books, and this is the first one I have read of hers that isn't set in Amish country.

Jenny...omg...they are sooo good...and it is almost shamefull...31 yr old woman loving a romance between a 17 year old girl and a supernatural being...the last book I read for pleasure besides this series The Appeal by John Grisham...my hubby is a big fan of his and so he passes on the ones that he believes I will enjoy. It was good, but I still sucker out for the classics...

I just finished a book also titled "The Outlander" but it was a new fiction by Gil Adamson (this lady's first book) VERY good, suspensful, set in 1903 a lady has just killed her husband and runs...with her brothers-in-law on her trail....I highly recommend it! |

I'm now reading Mother of Pearl by Melinda Haynes. Takes place in rural Mississipi in the mid 1950's, and is a great read about hold outs for Jim Crow, spiritual mysticism found in a half native american, half black woman who can see your "story" and lives down by this creek that gives the town life and takes some away. Very good summer read for porch swings :)
