Does anyone else like reading about Native American life? I have a friend that is suppose to pick up a copy of "Trail of Tears" while in Cherokee and I sure hope she doesnt forget. I love to read about the everyday life and survival of their past. I also love pioneer stories (LOVE little house on the prairie). Any suggestions/books that anyone has relating to these would be appreciated.

Me too!! I adore just about anything about pioneers and Indians both. I have read Trail of Tears..I hope you get it. I will think about it and list some books here for you for sure. I KNOW I can come up with some!!

I have Trail of Tears, just haven't read it :(
Try Lakota Woman.. I forget the author's name. But it's a true story about one womans life. She was there at Wonded Knee in the 70's and she tells about that and just her struggle's growing up. She has a sequel, but again can't remember the name.. I'm not much help am I?
I'll check for the info later..
I know I have lots more books on the subject too. That's all I read growing up was western's and pioneer books :)

Have you read "A Sudden Country"? gosh the authors name...hmmm... Karen something..I will look and post that later. Very very good book...gritty and real and thought provoking. Pioneer book..not Native american at all..but so good.

Oh, there is a book that I read called "Follow the River" that was good, but it kind of painted the Indians in a negative light. It's based on a true story about a woman who was kidnapped by the indians and how she followed the river, I don't know how many HUNDREDS of miles, back to her home. It was a good book.
I love to read about the Native Americans as well. They are such fascinating, Spiritual people (believe it or not, they don't all believe in multiple "GODS", many believe there is only ONE, just like Christians). There are several tribes not far from where I live and they are WONDERFUL people. When my two oldest boys were young they were in a county program called "Head Start" and there were several Indain families also involved. They would share some of their traditions with us all-- traditional food and dance-- and it was so NEAT!!! I am hoping to attend at least ONE Pow wow this year, if I haven't missed them all! it's quite an experience if you've never been to one.
Oh, and there is a really good book about Pioneer Children. I can't remember what it's called, but it was written based on the journals the kids kept while on the trail to Oregon and California. That was a REALLY interesting book. Some of the "True" stories are very hard for me to read. They are rather boring and not very well written. But that might be just ME! Happy reading Ladies!!!

Follow the River was good!
When I was a little girl one of my favorite books was "Friday the Arapaho Indian". I wish I still had it.

Never heard of it Aunt Jenny. Have you looked on Amazon.com or ebay? You might find a copy there. I have found a whole series of out of print books (the Sunfire series I mentioned somewhere on this thread) and am slowly but surly adding them to my "Library"--- which, with all the books I have --- COULD make a LIBRARY!!! (LOL!!)
Hey, did you also read "From Sea to Shining Sea?" by the same author of "Follow the River?" I never got to that one. Just wondering.

Thanks for everyones info, I knew my farmgirl friends would help. I have been to the Pow-Wow thats in Hamilton Ga several times and I just love everything about it! I will keep checking this post for more info. I am gonna write done what each of you recommened and keep my list so I can start searching for some of them. Thanks again.

Susie, I know you can get "Follow the River" on Amazon.com DIRT CHEAP!!! You might find a lot of the other books suggested by the other ladies there too. Happy reading!! ~~ Tracy
