If you like cowboys (1800s) and mysteries, you'll love the series by Steve Hockensmith that follows the adventures of two cowboy brothers, one of whom is a passionate follower of that "new" series, Sherlock Holmes. He cannot read but his brother can and so Big Red" reads all the new stories they can get their hands on to "Old Red", who then applies Holmes methods to solving crimes they stumble into. It's a fabulous series. You really feel like you're there and the mysteries are fascinating. There are two so far: "Holmes on the Range" and "On the Wrong Track". I really recommend them!

Patricia,
Are the Steve Hockensmith books aproperate for children? I have a 9 year old son who loves cowboys and mysteries.

No Trina ~They're adult stories ~ some rough language - you know cowboys. You might want to go to the library and check them out. I don't know how mature your 9 year old is. Good luck!

thanks. i've read aloud some L.L. books to them, that way i can skip the language. i don't know how much good it does since g-pa is a cowboy and talks like one. when george was 4 he got angry and told me that he was going to tan my hide and nail it to a barn door...John Wayne was off limits for a while after that.

I am reading "A Will to Murder" by Gail Feichtinger.

It is a real life story, about the Glensheen Mansion-Congdon heiress murders in Duluth MN.
The heiress'daughter was a nut job and did it, eventhough she was acquitted on technicalities-she had the best attorney in the state of Minnesota.
It is very compelling, especially since I am reading about the daughter's later life, and she lived near where I grew up and live now. She was one freaky lady!!!!

I started the year off reading Still Life with Chickens by Catherne Goldhammer. I then read The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Both very good books. I am now reading Animal Vegetable Mircle by Barbara Kingsolver and I am also reading Boone by Robert Morgan. Both are good so far.

I just finished PEACE LIKE A RIVER which I heard about on this forum. It was very good. I just got the new book by Bill Cosby today and so far it is excellent. This year is the year I am reading the Bible for the first time. It is broken into daily readings with notes, etc. I am really enjoying it.

I started reading a book called Skinny Dipping by Janet Lembke. She's a bit of an academic for my taste, but her she weaves water, myth, nature, (and skinny dipping!) together well enough to keep me turning pages.

I am reading The Shack by William Young. Has anyone else read this? I started it the other night but am waiting until Saturday to finish reading it. My friend read it and said that it touched her soul so much!

I love to read. This is one of my favoirte topics. I get titles to read and I am never disappointed. Over the past 2-3 months I have read:

Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen--A former circus worker tells about the "old circus days during the depression". It is really worth reading. Very enjoyable

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. "A remarkable memorie of resilence and redemption." This is a true story about the A Disfunctional family and the spirit of the children. I throughly enjoyed this. I first thought it would be too heart heavy, but I was wrong.

Abundance a novel of Marie Antoninette by Sena Jeter Naslund. "If you choose one book to read about Marie Antoninette let it be this book." I agree. This is the second book I have read about her and during this book I realized how YOUNG and used she was during her time as queen.

Today I began Peronal History -about and by Katharine Graham. This is a Pulitwer Prize Winner. I am very interested in her life. I knew she was the powerful owner of the New York Post, but did not realize she was very respected in many circles of society. So far I like it...it is long, so I will see how it goes.

I'm reading The Friday Night Knitting Club - it's really good, but I didn't expect it to turn out to be so sad.

Katherine Graham was the owner of the Washington Post, not the New York Times. Please excuse the mistake.

I'm reading The Collected Stories of James Herriot. It's (supposed to be) Springtime, and that always puts me in mind of England...and I instantly grab this book.

Right now I am re-reading Mansfield Park-Jane Austen. I am such a Janeite. I so love history and Regency England is my favorite time period of all and so her books fit me perfectly.

Ahhh, me too Marcy (a Jane-ite - not reading MP at the moment)! Are you watching the Austen films on PBS on Sunday nights? (They're currently in the middle of the 1995(6)? BBC/Colin Firth P&P.

I am reading How to Design Your Own Dress Patterns.
I've had the book for years, and have thumbed through it, but this is the first time I've actually READ it.
Maybe next time through I'll actually do some patterns!
