Georgeanne, my sympathies go to you tonight. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story with us. What seems like the end of the world to a catepillar is a whole new beginning to the butterfly. By the way, did your Mother like to sing?

Patricia,
My mother wasn't really a singer. I can't remember ever hearing her sing. I sing though, not well, but I love to sing. I have a lullaby voice according to my friends and family. You know, a voice that only a baby would love? LOL I used the butterfly analogy with my daughters at mom's passing. It was so easy for them to understand that.

Thanks for the hug!!

Thanks for answering, Georgann. It's funny. I was thinking of your mother and I heard music. Anyway, she's doing fine. I had somebody go check.

I was singing! I sang all of her favorite old hymns and childhood songs that I learned when she was my Brownie leader. I sang Amazing Grace, Old Rugged Cross, Shall We Gather by the River, And He Walks With Me, Three Little Angles....I tried to remember all of the ones that she loved and I sang until my throat was sore. I do hope she enjoyed them. Like I said, I have a lullaby voice!

Thankyou Patricia for checking on Mom. I felt in my heart and I know in my heart and mind that Mom is doing well. Your confirmation is a blessing and refreshment for my soul.

Georgann, I just logged on for my every-4-day check up on the forum (PC's fried, using son's PC) and read the news of your beloved mother's passing. I was so touched and awed by what a mother's love can do. What an inspiration! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Georgeanne - that explains it. Apparently, when looked for her, she had your singing wrapped around her like a cloak. That's why I heard it. Funny, when my Mom died, I sang to her ,too. I was the only one there (I have no sibs). I kept singing one song from the 30s that I can't remember now, rubbing her arms (gently, she was skin & bones), sponging her lips. A couple of days earlier, when she could speak but was already "out of it" she became agitated and called out for her Mama (we Italians seem to do that at the end) and I saw my Nonnie come and put her hand on Mom's shoulder. She said, "Josephina, whatsa matta? I'm here. I'm here." and my Mom put her hand over Nonnie's and calmed down. Mother's love, for sure.

Love,
P

PS Now she's sitting surrounded by tons of flowers and she has a big grin on her face. She sends love and thanks.

Oh, yes, I can just see her doing that. She loved flowers and the girls and I kept fresh flowers in her room at all times. We picked the daffodils and tulips. I cut the dogwood and apple blossoms. Dani picked the wild violets in the yard....we tried to bring the beauty of the creation into her view every day she was confined. She loved watching the squirrels and all of the lovely birds that were outside of her windows. The last day she was out of bed, she wanted to watch at the window. She just sat there and seemed like she was soaking each and ever detail in. She somehow knew it was her last time up and she was going to absorb every last detail. I'm so thankful for the squirrels. I've cussed them so long now, but they really did give mom something to laugh at during her last days.

Oh, the day after her death, I was standing at the kitchen window and sitting on a tree branch right outside was a big brown owl. He just sat there looking around and then flew away. I hear the owls all of the time, but that was the first time I ever saw one here!

Oh, and Patricia, thank you for sharing your mother's memory with me...what comfort to your mother that her dear mother came to her. It just made me realize that the most powerful motivator on this earth is not what I have thought all of these years. I have always thought that guilt and fear where the most powerful motivators, but I now know that it is a mother's LOVE!!!

Thank you again!

And thank you to all of my farmgirl friends. You really made the difficult times lighter by all of your prayers and support....I'll never forget it!!

Love and Blessings,
Georgann

Georgeann, no platitude helps, so I won't even try to think of one, though I long to be of some comfort to you. How many of us can imagine the depth of devotion it's taken for you to care for your mother so well, for such a long time? You're a good person. And it occurs to me that although I didn't know your mother, never met her, don't even have a face to go with thoughts of her, I've got this much to remember her by: she gave the world you. For that alone, she must have been one fine woman, and I mourn that loss with you.
