Hello all
My husband and I have recently become foster parents to a wonderful 10 year old girl. We don't have any children of our own and this is our first foster child. Any one else out there a foster parent? Would love to hear about your experiences. Thanks, Melanie

I am pretty sure Aunt Jenny has in the past. Congratulations! I think it is wonderful!! I had a minor put into my care by the state once so I guess that is close, other then that, I have not. But I think it is wonderful when good homes open their doors to children in need of love!
Hugz!

I'm not a foster parent, but I have thought of doing this once my life is settled down a bit more and I have a career. Congrats on your new foster daughter!

We have. Our first foster kids were brothers..6 and 7 years old..yikes! They were so hard! But we did our best to love them like they were our own. They didn't end up staying with our family.(just for 8 months) We adopted the next set of brothers we got and then the rest of our kids we ended up adopting too...3 more.(5 of our 7 kids are adopted...all out of the foster care system...the youngest we adopted was 3 adn 1/2 when we got him) We are done adding to our family (probably) at this point. I think foster care is such an amazing experience. I guess my best advice is to use your instints..be a parent even if they act like they only want a friend. A 10 year old needs a stable parent....which a kid in foster care does not have or they wouldn't be in foster care. ( I have 3 ten year olds..can give you loads of advice on 10 year olds..haha)Even if you only have a child for a short time and you don't think so..you make a difference. I sure wish you good luck and have fun!!...feel free to email me any time.

Melanie....what a selfless and WONDERFUL thing you are doing.
I am not a foster parent, but have often thought of it.

thanks ladies!!
"Our" girl Jasmin is great and fits in just like she's been here all her life. She grew up in the city and is now a true farm girl!!! She is so proud of herself that she can milk a cow!!
She has two visits a week with birth family and her grandmother is working on becoming a foster parent so that Jasmin can live with her. Our "guts" tell us grandma is okay, but grandma is also controled by Jasmins mom who is not so good. Anyway.....we will do our best and love her while she is here.

Dosnt having farm animals make it so much easier to get aquainted? Not many kids don't like animals...Sounds like Jasmin is doing great so far!!

thanks for all of your kind words. It sure does help. We are truly enjoying her, but are a wee bit disapointed with the social workers. They seem to always want to take the "side" of birth mom. birth mom has never had custody of Jasmin (fathere did) and now mom is being so difficult to work with and making all kinds of accusations (sp?) yesterday, my husband was 15 minutes late dropping Jasmin off for her visit (his truck broke down) and mom called the social workers. the social workers said that my husband should have called the mom (my husband does not own a cell phone) anyway...would be nice to have someone on our side some of the time.

Well ladies.Jasmin is gone. She went to live with her grandmother. This is great for her as her grandma is such a nice lady and will provide a great home for her. We were glad to have her even if for a short while.

Melanie-

How wonderful and sad at the same time! I so glad you were there for Jasmin while she needed you! Are you going to get another foster child since Jasmin was placed at a permanent home with her grandmother?

She really did leave a footprint on our heart. my husband and I have been talking about adopting older children (we are still trying to have our own) we thought that we would foster for awhile to get our feet wet

Hey Melanie,,,,you can always borrow mine. Two teenagers....(just kidding, I think)
I think you and your husband will make amazing parents, as what you have already done is given yourself totally, and any child out there will see, and want what you have to offer.
