Here is one recipe for war cake I found on the Internet. There are quite a few. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/war-cake-recipe-1910942
The Water Pie sounds linteresting - sounds similar to a gelatin or pudding cake.

Well, the USPO strikes again. In my daily Informed Digest emails on Friday, Saturday and Sunday it said that package was coming today. Today it did not arrive. Wonder what corner it is stuck in now. Hopefully I will get the fabric soon.

Just checked tracking on the feed sacks. Here is today's report. Heather and Rita -- both show delivered today. Linda's left Dallas yesterday and is in transit. Marilyn's arrived at Ft. Worth distribution center today and is in transit. Texas is dropping the ball here. But at least these last two have found their way to the right state. Though, I wish Texas wasn't sooooooo big. jean

The PO is so strange. My tracking info that came to my phone is a bit different. LOL! The package that I got 3 notices for that said it would be delivered on Monday, arrived at the Dallas TX Network Distribution Center at 12:56 PM today. Then it left the Dallas TX Network Distribution Center at 1:14 PM. But something must have gone wrong, because it again left the Dallas TX Network Distribution Center at 2:17 PM. LOL! I guess it is really traveling around this area somewhere. LOL! Hopefully I will get it tomorrow. It is so funny sometimes trying to figure out how they scan and track packages, since they seem to do the same thing more than once in a trip. LOL!

How about a fried bologna, or potato peel sandwich for lunch today? Let's see perhaps we can find enough money to buy a can of salmon. With a little chopped onion and a whole lot of bread crumbs, we can make enough for the whole family to have salmon patties for dinner. I'm still reading a lot about life during the Great Depression and counting my 21st Century blessings. How is everyone doing on their current feed sack projects? I have my patterns all picked out and just need to get started now that I have my sewing machine back from the shop. . . . . just thought I'd check in and see how y'all were doing. Tag. You're it!

Hi Heather, well I finally figured out what I was going to make with my feedback and put it together this weekend. Now I will work on the embellishments. Oh this is fun:~)

Hi Debbie - I finished The Persian Pickle Club book. It's ready to be sent but I better make something with my feed sack first LOL!! I have a couple ideas in mind and I think there's enough fabric for both of them :)
Jean - My father in law orders fried bologna sandwiches when we go out to eat!!! I tell him if I'm going out I'm not ordering bologna :) I don't think the potato peel sounds very good but I guess it's better than going hungry.

Fried bologna! Wow! I had forgotten all about that! We ate a lot of bologna when I was a kid. I remember when I took home ech.we took a piece of bologna with the red rind on it, put a nice big dollop of freshly made mashed potatoes in the middle and broiled it. Because the rind would shrink up under the hot broiler, you would end up with a bologna cup full of mashed potatoes. Just peel off the rind and enjoy! This became a family go to! We made a cookie sheet full...because our daddy worked hard as an oil field driller and our brother was a football player.both were about 6'3" tall!

There are videos on you tube of an elderly woman, who talks about the great depression as she prepares simple meals from that era.

My family loves fried bologna too. I am with Heather on the potato peel sandwich, does not sound good. I do love salmon patties though. Now I am hungry:~)

I grew up on Depression Ham Salad sandwiches and I still enjoy them. Mom had a hand-grinder the kind the clamps on a table. She would grind bologna add onion, sweet pickle, miracle whip, pepper, and mix that up and we would make sandwiches. They are pretty tasty. Kathy

The program is called: Great Depression Cooking. I see from the scroll that she had a video 13 years ago. So at least she has a long history. Seems like she passed away just a few years ago. We seem to have grown accustomed to big meals. They had eggs, and the garden. Very little meat and flour.

I remember my mother saying that as they were walking home from school, 4 miles, they would sometimes get a whiff of pinto beans cooking on the wood cook stove. They all got so excited.
