I am getting ready to purchase a worm bin and some worms. I found a worm farmer here in missouri that is only a couple of hours away. Rachel...they have European nightcrawlers for composting too. Do you know anything about these? my son likes that we could also use them for fishing. lol I"m going to let my boys be the worm farmers.

Blessings....

I'm so glad I saw this thread -- I've been researching this for a few weeks and was just about to take the plunge. One quick question, though. How big is your family? The reason I ask is I'm wondering about the size of the one you have being okay for us. Thanks for sharing all this info -- it's been really helpful!

I have four growing children ages 12(girl) and boyx 9, 6 and 3. And I also do alot of canning int he summer. I was going to get the four tier bin. Wasn't sure if a pound of worms would be enough or not. I emailed to company I'm looking at but haven't heard back yet.

Patti, I just noticed you are from Missouri. The company I saw is down around St . Louis. Here is their site. http://mypeoplepc.com/members/arbra/trshop/index.html Let me know if that link doesn't work.

Blessings....

Patti-
My family is a family of five... The vegis that exceed what my worms can take right now goes into a pile in the garden. After a while though, my population will grow with the feedings, and I can feed more. A really good book on worm to garbage ratio is WORMS EAT MY GARBAGE. Eventually, my box will be able to handle the amount of vegi waste that we put out.

Sarah-
I don't know about European Nightcrawlers. As far as I know, in general, "night crawlers" are earth movers, and not composters. All worms compost to a degree, but red worms are litter dwellers, and live only on leaf litter and the like, eating. They don't burrow like earth worms do. I do know this: red worms are smaller, but they have been proven to be great fishing bait. They wriggle a lot for long periods of time on the hook. I can't remember where I read that.

I think a pound of worms is a good start. I started with less, and so it's taking my population a while to get going, plus, I've only recently started to feed them well! LOL

Rachel...I was just reading some tips on that website i was at. They listed all kinds of bugs, flies, larvae and pests that can get in your bins. Is that a big problem?

Blessings....

I haven't had any flies in my bin, it's got small ventilation holes. There are a lot of little bugs that live in the bin with my worms. As long as the populations stay ballanced, they are all a part of the composting process. In the book WORMS EAT MY GARBAGE, there are tips on how to control the ballance. So far, I've not had any problems, and most of the critters in the bin with my worms are too small to even notice! It's normal, and healthy, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. For me, things have been really easy to keep. I haven't had any odors, or pests. In April, I will have had my bin for a year. Keeping a layer of newspaper over the top of the waste that you put in your bin is a good way to keep the critters that you don't want in your bin at bay.

I keep my bin in my kitchen. You don't even know it's there, unless you ask what the black bins are, or I feed them while you are there!

Rachel, I haven't added to your thread but have been reading it since it began and I just HAD to tell you that I got my "worm farm" in the mail today! It's all ready for the worms to get here and they should be here in the next couple days. Lucky you! I'm SURE that I will be asking all kinds of questions. I can hardly wait! Silly to be so excited about worms!

Just wanted to thank you for all your helpfulness, I don't know if I would have ordered it without ya! Thanks (and I'm sure you'll be hearing from me soon!) Cindy

My worms arrived! I have to tell you something funny though. I was never worried about worms bothering me, they just don't gross me out at all. But.....whe I dumped them into my bin and went to push them down from their little mound and my hand pushed on two pounds of cold wet worms I wigged out! It was like fear factor or something! I guess that was more worm than I was ready for! Thankfully, they found their way into the food, etc. and I can now deal with them a few at a time, not ALL at once! What a baby I am! Cindy

I'm definitely going to do this but have to wait until I have some extra $$ to order things. Thanks for the link to Trinity Ranch here in Missouri -- I plan to order from them since they're "local". Those of you who have ordered yours, I hope you'll keep us posted on your experiences!

Patti....You may want to wait before ordering from Trinity Ranch. I orded my bin and worms last Tuesday, paid in full, have sent them two emails and have yet to hear back from them as to whether they rec'd the order/payment or when shipping may be. I guess if I don't hear something soon I will call the number on the website. I sure hope they are legit, I don't want to be out $100. I will let ya know what I f ind out.

Blessings....

I did go back and read today that they only ship on Mon and Tue and it takes about 2 weeks so maybe they just don't give you any kind of confirmation. I hope.

Just got our Electric Coop newspaper yesterday (they publish a quarterly magazine of coop news and a monthly newspaper of things of interest in the rural areas of our state) and there was a big article on Trinity Ranch!! Very interesting folks and the article was really nice.

On the subject of actual worms, dh & I went to the local garden/seed/organic store that opened 6 months or so ago about 8 miles from us. I asked about worms and the owner said he doesn't sell any but if I start raising them he'll buy any worms, casting, and worm juice I can spare!
