Hello Farmgirls! I live in beautiful St Augustine Florida on 4 acres where I raise New Zealand rabbits, zebus, Nubian goats, chickens and dogs. I absolutely love the farmgirl life and the funny thing is I grew up in and around New York City for the first 30 years of my life. I learned to yearn for a different life through a few weeks spent at a rural summer camp when I was nine years old and through the Little House books that I loved as a girl. Lucky for me, I married a true farmboy from Arizona who helped me make my farm life dreams come true! I am so happy to have found this forum. I love the rules that advise against combative posts and arguments about politics or religion because everyone should feel welcome. So many other farm life forums I have checked out turn into platforms for people to put down others who dont share their political or religious views so thank you Farm Girls! I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

Thank you for the welcome Yellow Rose. Yes my little place is busy but I wish it could be busier! Unfortunately, I have a full time job with a long commute but someday I hope to have gardens, a greenhouse and more animals of course.

Laura,

Your farm sounds absolutely lovely and lively! I am not familiar with zubus, so I will be looking that one up here in just a few minutes! I'm also not familiar with that breed of rabbit - are they raised for fun, their hair, or their meat? I have so much to learn! In any case, welcome to the farm and I look forward to getting to know you!

Thanks for the welcomes FarmSisters!

Shannon - New Zealands are a meat breed (sorry Vegan friends!). They are typically the large white rabbits with red eyes but they do come in other colors. Zebus are a miniature cattle breed that is very hardy and well suited for the Florida heat. We have a 5 month old calf right now and we hope to get a little heifer in the near future to keep him company. We keep Zebus for organic grass mowing . Our goats are organic brush hoggers and our chickens are organic pest control and providers of some fabulous eggs!

Jan - I am so happy for you to have gotten out of the cold. We lived in an RV park too when we first moved to Florida. Those were fun times! St. Augustine is the oldest European settlement in the USA. In fact, we are currently celebrating 450 years! St. Augustine is located just south of Jacksonville. My little homestead is 5 minutes from the historic district and 10 minutes to the Atlantic Ocean. I am very lucky to have found this little 4 acre homestead when I did before prices skyrocketed because I would never be able to afford it now.

Welcome, Laura! I'm over in Texas, on my own on 25 acres, steady at it, and usually overwhelmed. I'm also one of those vegan sisters. I always said, "If God hadn't made me a human, I would have made a great fruit bat.

You don't need to worry about that combative posts/arguments issue here. We seem to flow along, knowing that we're all different...but the same.

You are blessed to have that true farmboy!

Thank you one and all for the warm welcome. I even got a welcome from the queen farmgirl herself - how nice is that?

Wanda - Veganism saved my mom's life so I have a lot of respect for the lifestyle even though I don't adhere to it. My mom became Vegan for health reasons after surviving cancer and she lost a good amount of weight, was able to get off her cholesterol meds and her severe joint pain disappeared. She is in her mid 70s and puts me to shame because she spends 4 hours a day working in her garden in the Florida heat.

Winnie - My daughter went to UF so I've been to Gainesville many times. Go Gators! What did you do to get Farmgirl of the Year? Congratulations! You must be an awesome farmgirl to get that honor ( ...and now I feel intimidated ).

Welcome Laura! I love hearing about your homestead! I lived in Florida twice, once in the Miami area and once in Orlando. Where did you grow up? I'm in the mid-Atlantic area, and my brother lives in NYC. You'll find this forum to be filled with good ideas, creativity and genuine warmth and caring. So glad you're here!

Happy Day!

Hello Amy! Thanks for the welcome. I lived in the Orlando area for several years the first time I moved to Florida. What borough does your brother live in?

As for where I grew up, most people find it hard to believe that I was born a true city girl but I was born in the Bronx, NY and spent the first 11 years of my life there. We then moved to the suburbs but still very close to NYC where I lived until I was 28. Since then, I've lived in many different places and several states because when I was younger, I had a very restless spirit! . I am definitely settled now!

Hi Dori - Thank you for the warm welcome! It is most appreciated! I left NYC when I was 28 years old, which is almost half my life ago although it seems like yesterday. Wow. You are so right that it was culture shock for me. When you spend your whole childhood and young adulthood in New York City, you think the whole world is the same way and as all of you knew way before I did, the rest of the world is vastly different!

Lucky for me, my life has taken many twists and turns that have taken me to many different places in this wonderful country. I lived in several different cities after I left New York. I didn't actually become a farmgirl until my late 30s when I met and married my true blue farmboy from Arizona. Boy did my life change after that! I will never forget when we bought our first little 2 1/2 acre homestead in Arizona. He said he and I were going to connect our house to the septic tank one morning and I looked at him like he was nuts. PS...I've done lots of plumbing, building, fencing, birthing, butchering and growing since then and I love it!!!

Hi Laura, my brother lives in Manhattan. He's a musician and used to live on the lower East Side. Then he met and married my sister-in-law, who comes from a very rich family. Now be lives on 5th Avenue on the upper East Side. It's a really fancy place, I feel like a hick when I visit! I can relate to your restless early days!

Happy Day!

Hello and thank you for the warm welcome, Bonnie and Amy!

Bonnie - my stepchildren were raised in Northern Minnesota. One of my stepdaughters still lives in Duluth. I have heard many stories of the winters there!

Amy - wow. Your brother really entered the world of the rich and famous! I went to a work function in Manhattan last year and a vendor took us to see some projects on 5 th Ave. the cheapest apartments there are 10 or 20 million! you are sooo right! That is a different world. I felt totally out of place! I couldnt wait to get back to my little homestead. These days I can only take NYC for two days a year max!!!

Hello Nini! Thank you for stopping by to welcome me. Zebus are really cute. The tallest the calf will get is about 40 inches full grown. He is very sweet and has a calm nature. He is a little shy still but he will eat grain out of my hand so I am making progress!

I hope to get to know you better too! Right now, I am extremely busy because I got the crazy notion to go back to college so I'm taking Astronomy and a computer class. I am finding it quite challenging so I haven't been able to participate on this forum as much as I'd like to but I pop in every few days just to say HI!

Hope you have a MARVELOUS Labor Day Weekend!

Welcome Laura!!!!

I know that you will fit right in here. The ladies here are super. I have learned so much from MaryJane and the girls here. My husband and I raise Heritage Hogs: Large Blacks and Red Wattles. They are so much fun. We have talked about raising rabbits but I have never tasted it, so until I do that is on hold:)
