Some might say I have a 'Hankie Obsession" (among many other obsessions! lol!)
I have been collecting hankies for a gazillion years, well almost!
Starting with my mother always insisting a proper young lady carries a hankie in her pocket book...
As my collection grew I thought it would be fun to make aprons and curtain valances with them,, but then as I washed & iron each and every one, I could not bare to cut them up... so my obsession grew even more..
I now have well over 150 of them as of last years count.
I recently came across 38 of them in a bag at a Thrift for only $5 for the lot of them!
I found this book, it is 1 of 2 on the subject of Vtg. Hankies.

so I know there are a lot more hankies out there waiting for me to find them.
I will confess, I do have some tattered hankies that I set aside for re-purposing~crafting... and some day will I will make a jacket decorated w/hankies.

I always iron flat my hankies, I do not iron 'folds' into them,,, as so many are very old and the fabric is fragile,
From printed ones to hand embellished to tatted edges, I love them all.
and yes, I still keep a fresh hankie in my 'pocket book'

SO very sweet, every 'little & big girl' should tuck a hankie in her apron pocket as well as her pocket book.

Gracie,
I have the same problem of not wanting to cut the hankies up. That's why my hankie bunting in the glamper uses full hankies that can be easily removed from the bunting if I ever want them to be hankies again.

Beautiful. Love the hand work on them. Sadly, hand work is becoming a lost art. I did a talk a few years ago on the history of kitchen linen, the concept of creating with what you have to make useful items for your home. Rarely seen today. A lady lent me a collection she inherited from her Aunt, who had made them during the depression. Lots of trivets, pot holders etc... She used anything and everything she had. The decorative stitching was beautiful. I wish I would have taken photographs of them. They were beautiful and no stains. People took care of their things back then. Thank you for sharing! Cheers!

I have several hankies that belonged to my oldest brother's first wife. After she passed away he invited my daughter and me to go through what was left (after her sisters had opportunity) and pick some out. She had a LOT of hankies.
And, I have several my mother-in-law gave me . . . she told me I could sell them . . NOT! She passed away about two years ago and I treasure both of these collections.
I also have some I've purchased here and there and several that have been given to me, mostly by my farmgirl sisters!

Grace,
I love this post! I love hankies, too. I don't have near as many...just a few. I tied one to my knitting box (a vintage train case), and I love to tie one on the outside of my purses for a feminine touch. Someone once gave me two, framed in glass as art. I also have one on my dresser as a dresser cloth. I love them. I bet your collection is amazing.

Farmgirl hugs,
Nicole

Those are so beautiful! I would have a hard time cutting them up too. I don't have any hankies, let alone vintage hankies, but my husband has some and he uses them regularly! Now I'm inspired to be on the lookout for some...

I inherited a small number of hankies from two grandmas. I have one in my pocket everyday. I use them for dribbles from my nose and eyes. The kids at school love to look at them. I too cherish my hankies. They are much more ecological than tissues.

Hankies, and Perfume, like the favorite 'Evening in Paris', was an affordable, not to mention sweet gift for women of all ages...
I recall going to the Woolworth stores back in Kansas, and having to make the tough decision of choosing between a wee bottle of Evening in Paris (in the iconic blue bottle w/gold label) or a sweet box of (inexpensive) hankies, a set of 3 perfectly folded to display their lovely design. And depending on how many dimes and quarters were in my little pocket book, I would make my decision...My mother, (American) grandmother, and assorted teachers would be the recipient of my gift.

a wee bottle of Evening in Paris...

That apron is gorgeous! I've thought about making one like that but am soooooo reluctant to sew up or cut up my hankies into anything else! I may rethink it, but I'd not want to really "work" in one like that and get it all stained and messed up!

Reading about the hankies is making me misty! I had several that were especially for little girls. I remember one in particular had an elephant on it -- I have always loved elephants and that is possibly why. Also had one with a wee mouse on it -- wasn't Minnie or Mickie, just a mouse. Oh how I wish I had those little treasures today, but my parents have always been wanderers and sometimes things got tossed during packing up for another move. I may have to rethink tissues in favor of a nice hankie.

Oh my hankies, I have tons of them from my mom and grandma. I have given some to farmgirls and to my own girls. I think one of my daughters still uses hankies as do I. I don't use the very fragile or the very old ones but I do use the rest as they were made to be used. I don't repurpose because as you say it is hard to cut them up. Especially the ones that have been crocheted or tatted around the edges. The only problem I have with collecting the hankies is storage space for them! LOL!

Oh Erin, oh how sweet that apron is...

hmmm, maybe rather than cutting up precious aprons, just photo copy each hankie onto fabric.. and then cut the photo copied ones..
Back in Spokane, WA., there is a store called "The General Store" and they sell hankie reproductions,,, not as soft as original hankies, but I had bought a bunch before leaving WA., to use for crafts and gifts...they were $1 each... If I was still in Spokane, I would head right over and buy enough to make that apron...

Grace, It never occurred to me for some reason to store them in one of my decorated boxes. What a great idea and I could keep them altogether instead in different drawers and where ever I could find a spot to stash them. Thanks for the great idea! Oh and I have lavender left from when my daughter got married. Guess I will sprinkle some of it in there with them.

I have a precious few hankies with beautiful crocheted edging made by my Grammy. She died when I was very young and so they are very precious. The handiwork is amazing! Grace, your collection is fabulous!
