Well, we have some funny names here in PA too - Shickshinny, Bird-in-hand, Intercourse, Blue Ball, Snow Shoe, Rough & Ready, Hazard, (nope - no Dukes there, though) and Punxsutawney (where Phil the groundhog lives)!!

What's so funny about Paint Lick
I've been there, Trish! Also, Knob Lick, which is where our own Miss Wilma lives.

Kentucky is full of them--in fact, we even have a book published by the University of Kentucky detailing the origins of the name and what they've been called since inception.

Down the road from me is the famous, "Rabbit Hash", Kentucky where floodwaters rose and made rabbits run for higher land and well, there's supper.

There's also:
Monkey's Eyebrow, KY
Possumtrot, KY
Hell's Half Acre, Ky (which indeed, is exactly as it is referenced. Probably the ugliest little burg I've ever set eyes on. Even saw a one eyed, one legged dog!

Jonni,
I don't follow blogs. If you had a blog about visiting these wonders of Kentucky, I would.

Ah yes, Boring, Oregon. Their motto is "The most exciting place to live."

We don't have many strange names around us, but just names outsiders can't pronounce.

I should start one just for you, Trish--before Violet was born, Justin and I drove that little Honda civic through 10 kinds of creekbeds, reading the Gazateer, trying to find all these little places. We've seen some really amazing things along the way!

I used to live across the river from Hogjaw, a ways from Toad Suck, and there are at least a half dozen areas called Possum Kingdom...all of these in Arkansas

How about Purgatory, Alaska? Fortunately there is also a Paradise. And Quinahagak? Any takers on pronunciation? And Egegik and Kvichak? Anuktuvik Pass, which means, of all things, the hind end of a caribou. Hee, hee.

Oh yeah, I forgot Skunks Misery here in Northeast PA. I'm not sure if it is an official town, or just a section, but the name always makes me wonder?!?!??

I used to live in Flintstone, Ga. right up the road. My youngest daughter still lives there.

Wonder what's behind these town names. Flintstone was named because of the rock. We got all kinds of jokes when we moved there. But I love it. And the many ways people pronounce Chickamauga. Very funny! I just spell it for them.

I do love Knob Lick, Kn. Or Paint Lick? What was it?

I remembered another one from here in PA - Gobblers Knob. It is even mentioned in one of Beverly Lewis's books.

The area where I live used to have a community where mini farms are now. It was called Whodathoughtit. But my favorite here in Oklahoma are the two communities Nowata and Lottawatah. :-)

I've actually BEEN to Gobbler's Knob, Luanne! On Groundhog Day, as a matter of fact! Too funny!!!

I find these PA town names funny: Blue Ball, Intercourse, and Lackawanna County... What on earth were the settler's thinkin'? LOL!!!

Nini - That's funny that you've been to Gobbler's Knob! I've been there too, and to Punxsutawney, but not while "Phil" was out.

I live just a couple of miles from Lackawanna County, and it is an Indian name. Northeast PA had several large Indian settlements. Our lake nearby is called Wallenpaupack - also from the Indians.

Love this thread!

Oh, Luanne! You have GOT to see Phil! LOL! SO cute... Did you see the window at the library where you can view the town's groundhogs year round? Phil resides there! My stepbrother lives in Punxy and took us for the grand tour and festivities a few years ago. They sure take their ceremonies quite seriously! :)

Thanks for clearing up the Lackawanna... I just figured that by the time the settlers settled in, they were plumb tuckered out! LOL! ;)

Have a blessed holiday season, girls!
