I've been hesitating to get in on this one because it seems pretty heated. But this one puzzled me:
Sunshine said: "At the same time if you are being pulled over you have broken some law."
I thought that we were innocent until proven guilty? Police officers can ticket a person for any number of things while driving or anywhere else. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the person *broke that law*. It becomes a case for the courts to decide or for the ticketed to fight. For example, you can get a ticket for parking in the wrong spot but if you prove that the parking rules were unclear, then you can fight and win. Off-topic, sorry, just had to say that.
And I'm sure excited to put my bumper sticker on my car now!

that is fine and I have done that on a parking ticket where the police man wrote 100 % in the red when I was 10% in the red and won but I still broke the law. And if a law is unclear then it is unclear if a law was ever broken to begin with. You are corrct in what you wrote. Typically police don't pull you over for no reason though a infraction normally has happened of somesort. Please don't ever be afraid to give your opionion heated or not. Speaking of laws it is one of your rights ( freedom of speach) I never want someone to feel like that I took that from them.
I hope you have fun with your bumper sticker as it is cute.
have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

I'm with you Catherine...not sure whether to post to this or not. I am floored that someone would not put MaryJane's Farm bumper sticker on their car because of a possible marijuana association. I remember when heroin was called horse. Does that mean we should maybe remove our horse silouette bumper sticker?? And I grow poppies along my fence line...oh geez, some kinds are a source of opium and their presence might be misconstrued. C'mon folks, let's relax and get real here. People will believe what they want to believe, logical or not. It's up to the individual to rise above the nonsense. Personally, I think the officer made a fool of himself and I would have been hard pressed not to laugh.

I'm sorry, I almost pee'd my pants when I read this.
I for one did not live through the 60's and 70's as pure as the driven snow...draw your own conclusions. And never once in all the time that I've been coming to this site and reading about Mary Jane Butters and her farm did I ever ever think of marijuana.
I just read about a company that is making silk marijuana plants for home decor. Now wouldn't that be interesting to ride around with in the back seat! |

My kids were convinced that the turtle was a real one too..I had to tell them that there is no way Corey (her dad and my kid's oldest brother) would let her put herself that close to a big old turtle's mouth..and then they agreed and believed it wasn't real for those of you who don't know what Sunshine and I are talking about..in my blog it is a picture of my little grand daughter Kayla on a turtle at a zoo..check it out!!

I wasn't born until 1970, and I also did not make it through the 80's and 90's as pure as the driven snow (glad I'm not the only one). Seriously, when was the last time "mary jane" was widely used as slang for marijuana? Don't police officers have to update their drug dealer lingo? Isn't there a class that our tax dollars are paying for letting them know that in these modern times he should only be concerned about a bumper sticker saying the driver of the car is a certified farmgirl of "the chronic?" Actually, for all I know it's come back into popularity, but I've only ever heard people who keep themselves far removed from such things refer to it as such in any seriousness.
And Sunshine, your driver's ed teacher was sadly misinformed as so many of the adults who lecture children on drug use tend to be... the slang, "mary jane" is actually a literal, Spanish to English translation of the word "marijuana." Mari=Mary, Juana=Jane.
Who would have thought we'd be having this conversation on the farmgirl website over bumper stickers?!

Well if I had a bumper stickers (BG) I would sure put it on my car!!! I think the policeman was having a really bad day, must have had to fill his quota for the day. We are friends with several state patrolman and they use a little common sense, which this policeman should have used. Yes we should voice our opinions, but should not go overboard with them |

Has anyone clued in Mary Jane Butters that she could possibly be seen as a drug grower, being a farmer with that name?
I have a feeling she'll be chortling over this at some point. I'll bet she's heard it a million times, and is sick of the reference. |

When I got our first bumper stickers for starting a Chapter, my husband (a Sheriff's Deputy) took one look at them and questioned, "Do you know what Mary Jane stands for?" Having grown up in the 60's, of course I knew, but I explained what the Farmgirls movement was all about. It's just too bad that it has to be viewed by some as being something other than what it is. I guess its up to all of us to show everyone it has other meanings too. Look at it this way, if it sparks a conversation then that's an opportunity to spread the word about this place.

Susan, it's just a little more current slang. I think it was popularized by a rap song, but I can't remember who... sings(?) it.

Well personally, I think it's because some people's minds are still back in the 60's and 70's!
My ex is a retired police office/detective and he would have thought the same thing. They think when they're issued a badge, it's all their power. I don't think it was a bad day on his part, that's everyday! They get a rush stopping you, anything they can bring out the better. I personally worked as a Correctional Officer for over 14 years. You would not believe what people actually get arrested for, just because (they were having a bad/but normal day). I say just put it on your vehicle and go for it! We're Farmgirls, and we're tuff!!!!!! Just smile and let them think somethings up! That'll get them! Enjoy girls! No big deal! I'm proud to be a MaryJanes Farmgirl!!!!!

Well Gloria, then I guess my cop husband must be the exception to your rules, because every derogatory thing you've said about ALL law enforcement doesn't describe him AT ALL. He has compassion for the people he deals with every day. On second thought, forget it, I don't need to defend what he does to all those who enjoy bashing law enforcement. I just hope when you need him he'll still be around to protect you.

Okay now you have the Tom Petty song stuck in my head..."one more dance with MaryJane"...THANKS A LOT!!! And no he's not singing about a girl. I just cant tell from reading all the post quickly if some of your are mad at each other, offended by someone's name, by the original post...I am dense I suppose. I am not going to bash policemen in general because I hate generalities. I dont really care if anyone here has or does smoke pot. Pot...oh my god what am I going to call my kitchen 'cooking stuff containers'??? Look, who else thinks the officer had to be an imbecile to think ANYONE is a certified cannibus grower??? I certainly didnt know you could be certified to grow it...you cant around here anyway. Good grief! Besides who was this "they" who thought so? "They" sure are a scarey bunch.
But I will tell you this. It chaps me royally to be pulled over for 4 miles over the speed limit when there are crack dealers and crank dealers and meth labs all over my state, parish and town. REALLY chaps me. My husband and I just watch someone get busted in the Walmart parking lot this morning. Towed the car and everything. DEA agents and the whole nine yards. That made me a happy tax payer. But when I see 4 or 5 state troopers on a 75 mile stretch of highway, waiting on speeders it makes me INSANE. This state is short of officers all the time. And yes I know speeding is against the law. But putting officers every 15-10 miles seems a little like over kill. How about putting some of those officers in our neighborhoods busting up meth labs and crack houses? Wouldnt that be cool??? I DO think it is a good idea to set up DUI check points from time to time. DUI is a serious issue here. How about assigning some officers to stop stores from selling alcohol to underage kids???
It all sounds so ridiculous to me. It would have really made me mad for him to question me about a bumpersticker on my car. I am a BIG fan of the First Ammendment. In fact I kinda like the whole Constitution. And I am quite sure I wouldnt have hesitated to tell him he ticked me off. Never have been one to be scared enough to keep my mouth shut. In fact I will be quite honest and tell you if he told me my bumpersticker was part of the reason I was stopped...we might just have to contest that ticket so I could have my say in front of a judge...who is supposed to have read and support the Constitution. Just my two cents.

Hey, did you all know that there is also a candy called Mary Janes? They are very tasty and would certainly have a closer connection to an apron.
Honestly, this was all very educational for me and humorous and sad. Educational because I had no idea that it was a nickname or slang name for pot, so thank you all for sharing that tid-bit of new information and I was born in '61. Humorous because there are four pages of insights and inputs and ideas and opinions about a piece of plastic with some sticky on the back. And sad because none of you were there and have no idea what really happened that would have made the difference in how anyone would have truly responded (attitude, actual questions, circumstances, etc) and yet there are heated, ALMOST (lest I be accused) accusitory statements towards each other. Come on, ladies, we're all kindred spirits here.
Really, it was a one time incidence and we have no idea how the farmgirl reacted, do we? Or was it mentioned in the first post and I have already forgotten by time I got to page 4? I can see everyone's point, but will it really make a difference one week from now or one year from now? Please, let's just continue our friendships, commaradery (sp?) and united spirit for what we all know in our hearts is the best meaning of Mary Jane. How else would I know all of you, if I didn't know her first?
Maybe her mom was thinking of the candy when she named her because she knew she would be so sweet.
I hope you all have a wonderfully blessed day.
IN His hands, Lynda L.
