A good article to read:

Ladies Home Journal
March 2011
Pages: 102-107

"Extreme Housewives: A small but passionate group of women across America have embraced the kind of back-to-basics homemaking our grandmothers did-from scratch, by hand, grown in the backyard. And they've never been happier."

I can tear this out and we can mail it to each other to read. If you are interested, please e-mail me.

Wish I had Thursdays off work I would so go to the Teas, Tonic's and Old Wives Tales. I am sure it will be fun and informative.
As for the Bluffton festival ... happens every year and is a lot of fun. I happen to work downtown
but thankful I don't work that Saturday so I will be able to "stroll" There is another festival happening the first of July. Then the Right to Life / Car show later in the summer.
And our farmers market opened this past Saturday ... was a good turnout.

Again here I go wishing :) But I wish I could say I was working on some merit badges ... I think they are so fun. Life is hectic here ... 2 weeks ago my Pops had a stroke in Florida, was able to fly home this past Friday !! So we are over there a lot. My youngest son moved home from UT after finishing up his first year ... so glad to have him home. Middle daughter is due on June 11th and the baby shower is this Saturday along with the oldest daughters little girls first birthday party , Zaeda's birthday was May 1st but they wanted to wait until my parents were home to party. Needless to say I have been busy. So I am hoping that as soon as this weekend is over and the garden is completely in I can work on some badges just to d-stress and have some summertime fun !

Tammy, I am so glad you could fly to FL to see your Dad. I hope things start to wind down for you. I know what you mean about a busy May too.

I wanted to go to the tea program as well, but like you are too busy. For me, I had two kids working, which took two vehicles, and my dh was working late at Fire Drill. The only vehicle left has bad brakes and a flat tire (may still be good, just need to take the time to put air in it). I will soon be learning who to change the brake drums.

I'll just keep posting stuff as I find it, and maybe some day we can all meet up.

We are frustrated in getting our garden in. The rain is overwhelming right now. And then we had thunderstorms last night. I am praying we can get most of the seeds in tonight.

Gardening is frustrating for me, because the kids are not helping this year. They want what they want, but don't realize the benefits of being self-sufficient, or simply growing our gardens and raising the meat chickens. My husband works a full-time job on top of it, and with my sore foot, it's extremely frustrating. They see me sitting with my foot up, and see me as a burden vs. a person who simply needs stuff done.

I am reading books for a few badges when I can. Other times I am forcing myself to work in the herb gardens, and clean out flower beds. It is the only way to get it done. I'm trying to make pot holder sets to stock my "store" as well. Most days my house is a mess, and I just have to not let it get to me. Most days I want to rip the computer and TV out of the house, since that is what the kids cling to when I ask them for help. In fact, I think it's a good night to unplug them all.

I feel bad that I haven't met any of you fellow chapter girls! I'd like to attend so many of the events but between work, preparing our garden and yard work it's been a very busy couple of weeks. Hopefully things will slow down once summer rolls in.

We did get our garden planted (in between bouts of rain) and will be hunting wood scraps in the barn to make some supports and trellises. Nothing fancy, but have learned the hard way that tomato plants can get pretty darn heavy. This is our first year with pole beans and I'm excited to see how they'll do. Next year we're bringing in a load of sand for the garden and will try taters and onions.

Our next project will be to dig up some hideous bushes out front and maybe plant an azalea or small bush or two in their place. From the looks of these things I'd bet they're nearly as old as the house. When the painters painted the house the bushes had to be cut back so they'd have room for their ladders......now they look awful and one is dead or dying. I wish I had an eye for landscaping.....I'm pulling my hair out trying to come up with ideas on what to do once the bushes are gone.

I'm also desperately trying to finish this dang sweater I began crocheting. I have all but half of a sleeve done so I'm in the home stretch. Admittedly though, I got side tracked with crocheting a purse out of nylon cord just to see what it's like. It's a bad habit to start something before you're finished with another project. ;) Maybe a badge in my future?

Tammy, I have never stepped foot in Bluffton - will have to come visit your farmers market. Glad you had a good turnout and hope it continues!

Wood County Historical Days
In June, 2011, read more:

Friends of the Wood County Historical Museum,

Wood County Heritage Days is almost here! This is the Historical Society’s biggest event of the year, and we anticipate it being all the fun you’ve had before – and maybe just a little more! We’ve added a new event — a BARN DANCE! Attached is a flyer to help spread the word. Flyers and posters are also available at the Museum if you’d like to hang a few around your town.

Here is the scoop:
On Friday, June 10, we will kick off the Heritage Days weekend with a Barn Dance in the Pole Barn from 7-11 PM. Local caller Doug Michaels will lead square, round, and line dancing for beginner and advanced dancers. Advanced registration is $6/person and $10/couple and can be called in at 419-352-0967. Price at the door is $8/person, $12/couple. Children age 12 & under are free.

June 11 & 12 marks the official Power of Yesteryear Farm & Tractor Show and Heritage Days events and demonstrations. Highlights include adult tractor games, kiddie pedal pull, historic demonstrations, live animals, live music, and refreshments from 10 AM – 5 PM each day.

SUNDAY SPECIAL — WCHS annual BBQ fundraiser featuring Harlan’s chicken or porch chop BBQ dinner + 2 sides + roll/butter + homemade pie (mmmm!) + beverage starts at 11 AM until SOLD OUT – so don’t delay! The BBQ will again be held in the Pole Barn and you can eat-in or carry-out. Of course, the best part is that our Wood County Commissioners and Public Officials will be dishing out the hash! At 2 PM, we are pleased to host the annual Wood County Spirit Awards on the Main Stage.

There are so many wonderful events and participants, that you will just have to visit our website for the full details:
http://woodcountyhistory.org/pr_wchd.html

We couldn’t pull off this wonderful event without the support from our membership, so let us know if you would like to volunteer, donate pop, be an event sponsor, or help promote the event by posting flyers.

SEE YOU SOON!

I wanted to share photos from Heritage Days for you all. It's not just for kids either. I may have talked one woman into offering classes on making cane chairs. There were many demonstrators and many items for sale as well.

Click on my blog here to view the story:

http://pioneerwomanatheart.blogspot.com/2011/06/heritage-days.html

It was a lot of fun, good food, and more. They have an herb garden on site, and often sell herbs, plants and other materials.

Just a quick note to say 'hello' to everyone. Hope you're all staying cool. I'm still holding out hope that we'll all meet before the snow flies. Did I say the 's' word?

Boy, that was some rain and thunder bumpers we had last night eh? Our power flickered but didn't go out, thankfully. I guess Arcadia has no phone service and it won't be up until Monday. Again - we lucked out.

We're so excited as our garden is starting to give some fruits of our labor! We've had a few cukes and green peppers and I think we'll be able to have a tomato or two for grub tonight. Cantaloupe is really growing and our beans are showing serious promise. We're still not sure if they're the bush variety. Of three rows of corn we planted only ten measly stalks came in. But we're excited to taste them as they're the red kernels.

I'm determined to learn primitive rug hooking and know that old wool shirts and skirts are a good source. So I went to Goodwill in Findlay and found out when they put their winter clothes out - October.

I have had the new MJF mag but haven't gone through the entire issue yet. It's such a treat that I make myself go slowly and savor it all. Silly but there it is!

Kristine - sure hope you're up and running with your foot (well, maybe not running tee hee) and that you've got your voice back.

I've been crossing things off my list one bit at a time. It's slow going as some things can't be done in just one day.

First, I have to apologize for not getting all of the chapter members involved in touring an organic farm. It was very last minute, with e-mail, I simply felt it was too late to send anything out. My computer crashed and I will have to re-load my address book. We were still figuring it all out this morning.

I do want to tell all of you that I, as well as another chapter member (who was in that area at the same time, at a horse stable) toured the Graham/Omega Meats from in Grand Rapids, Ohio.

I am sharing the farm link and photos for you all. I know that for a few of you, it may be too far to go, but sharing anyway. I encourage you all to locate one. I am amazed at this man's dedication to organic fed animals. Even the corn, he feeds the hogs, is organic corn.

It's on my "Pioneer Woman At Heart" blogspot.

I too, have been extremely busy with the garden. I am gifting today, with our extra cucumbers. Soon, it will be tomatoes. I hope to make a meet-up picnic when it's not so hot out.

I'll look forward to meeting some fellow chapter gals at a picnic.

We're now getting a bumper crop of cukes and I've taken several into work to dole out. I think our tomatoes are close behind but I'm hoping to get them canned. Day before yesterday Meg and I ran up to see my parents. While there I was so very fortunate to have my Mom give me the canning supplies that were my maternal Grandma's. They were up in their attic (in this 90 + degree weather) but were an easy find. I'm so excited as I'm really getting into that old farm, antique look and practicality. Best of all they were my Grandma's and will now see another generation of use.

Of course we tooted when we drove by. I hope you don't think we're nuts! Your place is really coming along and I always envy the lack of traffic on 199 versus our Rt. 12. But I still love it here!

We too, had a bumper crop of cucumbers. We will be enjoying a lot of relish and pickles this winter and spring. I'm very thankful for that. Tomatoes are just not coming in.

Congrats on receiving your grandmother's canning supplies. That's wonderful.

Once this humidity slows, maybe I can set a location/date/time for a picnic.

I'm not getting any day trips in, other than the organic farm tour. Every day there is something to freeze, can or cook from our garden. Our corn, however, did not grow correctly. If you have tips, please share. We've tried for two years, and our sweet corn grows about half the size and then stops, and does not look right. We even soaked our corn seeds prior to planting. We may lack something in our soil. We don't use chemicals, so gardening is more difficult.

I can share that sprinkling flour mixed with pepper, has put a stop to squash beetles. We now have something eating away our cabbages. That's next to figure out, so next year we can stop it early.

HISTORY COMES TO LIFE AT LIVING HISTORY DAY
Nine Wood Countians’ Stories Told at Oak Grove Cemetery

The Eighth Annual Wood County Living History will be held Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Oak Grove Cemetery, Bowling Green, Ohio.
Nine individuals will come to life and tell their stories. Clive and Irene Patten of “A Joyful Noise” will provide music before the event. The Wood County Sherriff’s Department will be on hand to provide free rides up to the mound where the program will be held. Parking is available in the cemetery, as well as on the adjacent Bowling Green State University campus.

Those attending are encouraged to bring along lawn chairs. In case of heavy rain, the program will be moved to the First United Methodist Church, 1506 E. Wooster Street.

Re-enactors will provide a first-person history lesson in period appropriate clothing. Those persons chosen by the Living History Committee were picked because “they had a story to be told” and it was felt the rest of the community would enjoy hearing it.

Honorees include:

Col. Arnold McMahan was born in Ireland, but moved to Perrysburg with his parents when he was young. As a Civil War veteran he participated in many battles including the Battle of Chickamauga. After the war he practiced law and became a businessman. Eric Reynolds will be portraying Col. McMahan.

Julie Senn will portray her great-grandmother Elizabeth Crawford. Elizabeth and her husband Clarence had 7 children, 6 of whom lived to become adults, and after Clarence was killed in a truck accident in Tennessee, Elizabeth raised the children on her own with all the children pitching in to help.

Levi Loomis was regarded as one of the first white residents of Scotch Ridge arriving around 1832. However, he was half Indian, his mother being known as a Stockbridge Indian. Peter Kuebeck will be portraying Levi.

Mary Matilda Fast Stove was born in Bloom Twp, Wood County, the 8th of 12 children. Her family had a history of migration and religious convictions. Mary married Civil War veteran Edmund Stove. Alyce Walden will be portraying Mary Stove.

Kristopher Swartz will portray his great-great grandfather Frederick Schaller. Frederick was born in Switzerland and came to America with his parents, 6 brothers and 2 sisters in 1851, and settled in Perrysburg Twp. He volunteered for the Civil War in 1862, serving under Generals Burnside and Sherman.

Patti and Steve Speck are going to portray Nancy Phillips Brewster Truman and her son Sidney. Nancy was born in New York and came to live near Stony Ridge. She was married 3 times and had 5 children, 2 of whom were Civil War veterans. Sidney Brewster enlisted in the 21st Ohio Volunteer infantry and served under Col. Arnold McMahan. He was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga.

Margareta Scherer Tyson will be portrayed by Shelley Lee. Maggie was born in Germany and came to America at age of 16 under the sponsorship of the Evangelical Church in Seneca County. After the death of her husband, she purchased a railroad car and used it as a store/dinner.

Samuel John Croft, being portrayed by Caleb Reynolds was born in Perrysburg. Johnnie at the age of 13 enlisted in the Civil War as a drummer boy and became known as the Drummer Boy of Shiloh. John lived until 1938 and had the distinction of being the area’s last Civil War veteran.

An Ad Hoc Committee initiated by the Wood County Genealogical Society established the Wood County Living History Day in 2004. The present day Living History Program is sponsored by the Wood County Historical Society.
