I am unable to attend this event, but wanted to share with all of the chapter and any farmgirl interested. Making donuts from an infirmary cookbook sounds like fun! Unfortunately, I will be going out of town to look at a dairy goat.
Mark your calendar for a GRAND EVENT at the Wood County Museum Saturday, September 17, from 1-4 PM
I have attached a flyer to share with friends and colleagues.
In honor of Grandparents Day, BGSU Family Weekend, and “Be A Tourist in Your Own Town,” we are having an afternoon full of GRAND things to do:
Help us make donuts using a recipe from the Infirmary cookbook. Press fresh apple cider from apples collected right here at the Museum. Generational games from 1911 to 2011 – we are hoping to have LAWN croquet and Wii croquet too! Tour the Museum and the site to watch demonstrations in the blacksmith shop and oil derrick. The Barn Bums and the Herb Society will also be on-hand to chat about the farm equipment and lovely herbs and plants. Record your oral history – to preserve your stories for generations. Special GRAND memberships allow free admission to grandparents and grandchildren who visit together. Free Admission to the Museum on Saturday too – for everyone! and the fun doesn’t stop there... The Infirmary Inmates Vintage Base Ball team plays a triple-header at the Ned Skeldon Stadium in Maumee – the last game of the year “under the lights!” Games are at 3:00, 5:00, and 7:00 vs. the Whiskey Island Shamrocks and the Detroit Early Risers.
We hope you’ll stop by!

Next year, I would love us to all attend this event. We could change a few things for ourselves too. For example, when the kids activities are taking place (for those without kids), we could do a "Knit and Sit" or other craft together. Campsites are electric or non-electric and you can reserve a campsite on-line ahead of time. I'll keep watching for next year's date.
Also there is an Apple Butter Festival in Grand Rapids, Ohio in October. They hold it every year. They make the apple butter in large outdoor kettles and there are other activities. It gets very crowded too.

did you ever decide how to do these? "I'm considering making a recipe book to pass down family recipes to my children. These will go in their Hope Chests and help them start out when they move out. Have any of you done this? I'm contemplating how to make them - hand write them and put them in recipe boxes, in binders etc.?"
why not put them in your cereal box books which are sooooooooooooooooooo cool????????????????

Hi girls!
Hope this note finds everyone in good health and spirits. I wanted to touch base with everyone and see how you are doing. Kris, I hope your health issues are over. I always think of you when we pass your house on the way to my parents and will sometimes catch sight of your goat. Does he still like his new house? I smile to myself when I see those skid marks on the road - doesn't look like they're going to go away anytime soon.
It's so nice to see the sunshine today here in NW Ohio, it's getting me in the mood for spring. So many things to do!
Been looking at seed catalogs to order from (is it too late?) and fishing through Mother Earth News (I am just getting into this mag and can't get enough of it, much like MJF) for ideas on how to start them indoors. Saw a wonderful article on building tomato supports. We should be more successful this year at growing these monstrous plants w/o having them topple over from the weight. Hubby and I decided we're going to tone down the variety of plants in our garden and concentrate on a more manageable crop. Mmmmmm, I can taste the sweet corn already!
Lots of outdoor projects I'd like to do. I'd like to put a border on each side of our sidewalk leading up to the house. Only downside to this will be that we can't just mow right over the sidewalk in one continuous sweep. Plus side is that it will really add some 'purtiness' to the side yard.
I'd also like to plant a few sunflowers on either side of our barn door. It gets sun a majority of the day and would be an ideal spot against the dark red color paint. And speaking of barn, maybe dig out that piece of lattice in there and grow a vine...something that grows fast and full? Ideas?
And then there's the front of the house. We dug up some ancient shrubs last summer but couldn't decide on what to do next. So there it sits with nothing but our wrought iron bench to 'decorate' it. Am thinking a small circular planting of tall ornamental grass for starters.
And CHICKENS! Haven't given up on the idea. No, mam. Am looking into coop plans, breeds, etc.
And my list goes on and on.........
On that long winded note, may everyone stay warm and have a wonderful Valentine's Day next week.
Karen

Happy spring and belated Easter wishes to everyone. Hope everyone is doing well.
Am sitting here wishing we had another good dose of the nice weather we had a few weeks ago, what a tease it was! (But no complaints as it was utterly wonderful to get outdoors.) I have my flower beds all prepped and ready to go but I think it's just too soon to plant. I have Dianthus (sp.?), Elephant Ears (a hosta), a red dogwood bush and some ornamental grass to get in. Hubby planted a blueberry bush but we have kept it covered at night.
What I could start indoors for our garden I have. We have yet to till our garden as our tiller has a bum wheel. We have a Mantis tiller but it's just too small for the job.
Windy, windy WINDY the last few days. Geesh...if it's not tied, bolted or secured it's going to fly away. Had to put our recycling bins in an outbuilding to keep them from being blown over and strewn across our yard and into the field. Too windy to even hang my clothes out as I have no real buffer from the wind.
Kristina, are you still considering renaming the chapter? Have you or anyone come up with anything?
All take care,
Karen

Only thing I can come up with on ideas for chapter names might be something related to our state. But I honestly like the name of our group, it represents two aspects of my life that are dear to my heart.
I planted my dianthus along both sides of our sidewalk today - nearly two flats worth. Came across two 'presents' our local farm cat left in the flower bed. Ew! Speaking of which, know of anyone who wants a kitten? We've got two black and whites and a tiger that are just adorable.
Wanted to ask you how you're doing with your weight loss. I'm so inspired! My DD and I watched the 'Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead' documentary. We're going to try the juicing route to jump start a healthier diet and will try vegetarian. I know I've talked about it but we finally took the plunge and bought a juice extractor.
Take care and enjoy the day today/tomorrow - to be just as nice as today was but warmer.

Thanks Karen. I may just keep the name the same.
The flowers sound so pretty. I am restraining myself to not buy new flowers until May. :) I did buy our seed potatoes and onions, and have them ready to plant soon. I need to till up the garden first.
The wind here has dried out my flower beds so much that I can't weed them until the next rainfall. I did however, spend most of the day cleaning off my porch and putting out the remainder of the porch. I still need to borrow a power washer and wash the house siding etc.
These hard working days outside came early this year. We missed the gym workout this week completely, but will be back there again soon. With a large family it's very hard to keep a workout routine. We seem to bounce back and forth. For example, tomorrow one daughter goes to Choir contest, where she will compete in a solo, an ensemble and more. It's an all day event one hour from home. There always seems to be something that keeps us from the gym. We may workout, then drive over after that. We aren't giving up, that's for sure.
