Like Jennifer I like Hestia. I also have an affinity for Rhiannon. Her story is beautiful to me...diligent int eh face of turmoil....she is just beautiful. Above all, because I believe she embodies all, is Gaia. She is Mother and LIfe and food and health and family. She is everything and as such, I cling most closely to her.

Just wondering how you all celebrated Ostara - I did my spell today and it was fun (a day late, but the weather was so much more spring like today) - involved a colored egg, some goals written on parchment paper and then burned to ashes and a green candle - at the close of the spell, I buried the egg with the ashes sprinkled over it. Was very nice and meaningful! The spell was taken from The Craft of the Green Witch.

A few weeks ago, there was an interesting thread on graveyards. I can't find it now, and wanted to follow through on a promise I'd made to share a photo I took several years ago at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, DC. It's of the extraordinary larger-than-life bronze statue by Augustus St. Gaudens. It's properly known as the Adams Memorial but is sometimes called "Grief." It used to reside in a grove of enormous holly trees, with lovely curved marble benches within. It was a perfect place for contemplation but alas, the hollies were taken down some time ago, I believe for security reasons.

I've taken many photos of the statue, and I love it. The model was St. Gaudens' favorite -- some say they were lovers -- a woman named Davida, with whom I've always felt a certain kinship, for some reason. Imagine how I caught my breath when I got this print back from the photo lab one day. Please notice Davida's hand. It's just a trick of sunlight, of course, but it looks to me as if something more human than bronze was trying to come through. You might also want to notice her eyelashes.

I post the photo here because I've often used a framed copy of this photo to represent the Goddess on my altar.

Don't graveyards contain some wonderful works of art - not to mention personal devotion. There is a big cemetary I like to walk bare-footed in in the summer and just read the stones and contemplate.

Thanks, Libby. And Kathy, you're so right. Gee, I wish I knew where that great graveyards topic went to because I'm sure you'd enjoy it -- or did you participate in that discussion already? Sorry, this ol' farmgal has a slippery memory sometimes ;-)

Rosemary, I'm sorry I didn't leave a comment the other night when I saw your photo post. I thought it was totally intriguing and then spent about an hour researching Davida and St. Gaudens. Fascinating!! I really wasn't aware of all of the patriot statuary that St. Gaudens was responsibil for. Some of the most famous icons of American Historical/patriotic reverence. Loved it. Here in Richmond we have the Hollywood Cemetery....Talk about an old and fascinating place. I have always found cemeteries to be a place of peace. When I was a little girl, my siblings and I used to play in this huge old cemetery in Moline Illinois. It was called Riverside Cemetery. There was one statue that I remember going up to and placing my face against it to feel the warmth and peace of it. (It was made of bronze and stood in bright sunlight.) We called it the black angel. It was huge and blackened by the weather, but it was soooo beautiful. I don't think it is there anymore. Many didn't appreciate the beauty of it and defaced it with graffite. Oh, I do like the way the sunlight plays on her finger...beautiful!!

St. Gaudens was an extraordinary man. There's a film documentary about him floating around somewhere. Actually, it might be more about the Chataqua arts community of which he (and Davida) were a part, but it's a lot about him, too. His work has such extraordinary life energy.

I'll ave to bring my original print of this photo with me to our much-anticipated Virginia Farmgirls gathering so you-all can see how flesh-like the bronze looks like where the sun is hitting the finger. It's astonishing.

Too bad about your "Dark Goddess" (she sounds like Sophia to me!) sculpture disappearing. Presumably she's being given the love and protection she deserves. I can only shake my head and sigh when I think of how the only thing some people can do when confronted by beauty is defile it.

Well, I think I am beginning to get back up to speed after Mom's passing. I'll never fill this whole in my heart, but it doesn't hurt quite so much this week. I expected myself to bounce right back, but I didn't.

Anyway.....I have a couple of photos on my blog of Kim's Handfasting Circlet if anyone would like to see it. I just finished it today. I really hope Kim likes it. The blog explains why the particular stones are included.

Oh, and Rosemary, I would love for the VA farmgirls to get together!!! The sooner the better!!

Well, now that Nance is back from France, I say we dust off our state road maps and get busy about the specifics!

Thought I'd better bump this one up....oh, and Rosemary...where are you? I would love to get together this summer. We have new VA farmgirls on the coast, and do you know when Nance in France is going to be back?

Nance tells me she won't be back to VA until autumn. WAAAA! But the rest of us really should plan something. Ya'll can come to my goldie-oldie farm in Fauquier County, but I think the last time we talked about venues, we decided that Georgeann's neck of the woods would be the most convenient for most farmgals, meaning around RIchmond, right? Someone throw out a date! I'll start: how about August 4 or 5 (Sat., Sun.) just after official Lughnassadh?

That first week in August, I'll be taking Mom's ashes home to be with Dad in Illinois, so I can't do it that week, but before or after is fine with me. Perhaps the third week in July? Or the third week in August?

Either of those would work for me -- IF (and a big IF) -- I steer clear of the date of a recital my husband is giving, which he says will be the third of fourth weekend in July, either Saturday or Sunday. He says he can't remember. I'll see if I can pin that down. Sheesh! Go marry a musician.... ;-)

The recital I have to work around is Sunday, July 29. So either of your options would work for me. Who else??? Should we start a new thread in a less specifically witchy area?

Isn't it great how the Nuns always manage to hold on to a bit of Mishchief or whimsy !! have you noticed this.. you all had a comparison.. & a story of some of them.. & they really do have such great "mother" roles & they take on so much.. & give back even more! & almost always something with the earth or gardening..& don't think i've ever known a Nun that wasn't fasinated with growing something..
Well i have a quirky story of the Sisters in my home town surrounding this HUGE rock.. the rock has been there forever.. It's about 3 feet tall maybe by 5 or 6 feet long.. It's been there as long as I can remember.. & i'm 47 now.. I've since moved.. & there naturally has been new construction.. new homes & new roads leading to the area.. but that roack stays put.. & is on the corner of the road that leads to where the sisters are.. Well THEY paint this rock!!.. nothing phenominal.. nothing breathtaking.. but they paint it.. & some pretty wild colors.. !
Sometimes strips.. sometimes polka dots..But always SEVERAL diffrent colors.. & you never see them doing it..
So .. can you imagine these teeny little old Nuns sneaking down the road in the middle of the night to paint this rock!!! ?
What fun they must be having!! What are they planning when they do this? What are they talking about? they must be giggling while they hurry to do it!! I mean who decides what color or what design??
It's just the best thing!!
I imagine them loving their lives.. & their work.. & their prayers.. But then they have this..
They have their rock that they come to to release..
I just think it's so exilerating.. i don't know..
Just thought i'd share that story.. I love it..& think of them alot..
They mystery of it i suppose..

Tasha.. why is it that wax always winds up on our speakers?
That must be another of lifes Mysteries..

I DO have a picture of me sitting on the rock about 7 years ago.. ..
I love the picture..
I'll have to see how i can get it so i can scan it & show it..
wow.. i look diffrent!!

But the rock is so cool.. Those funny girls..
You know they do something else that i really like too..
If someone passes away.. & you send them the roses from the funeral..
They will press the petals & force them into forms into silver & gold brackets for braclets or rosery beads.. things like that for you..
Of course they charge you for this..
Sort of something they do to raise funds..
But i really love this.. I have something from My Grandfathers Funeral.. & He died when i was 10 ! I'm not even Catholic.. but have always just been so enchanted by this group of women! They alwasy seem so mysterious to me.. They live in these little cottage type things around this lake & they even have Swans.. it's so pretty out there..
I remember always driving out with my Grandma to go see them dropping off frowers always from one funeral or another.. & she seemed to always know them all.. as a little kid this was so amazing to me!

Wow, Kathie, sounds like they are a wonderful group of women living their dreams and commitments. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like without all of the worldly trappings. I used to watch the Flying Nun and wish that I could live the life of a nun.

What a peaceful picture you just painted of their life...and what a wonderful service with the flowers. I would love to have a memory piece like that.

I loved that show too! She was so cute wasn't she.. I alwyas wanted her to marry Carlos though.. wasn't that his name?
I used you walk around with a white dish towel draped over my head..
My mother must have thought i was nuts..
Good thing i never tried to fly too..

I know we can make these beads now too if we tried too.. since i am now able to make some jewelry.. but it just doesn't seem the same as if it were made by them..
I'll look up the name somewhere.. see what they are up too..
Something like The Sister's of The lake of Something.. I'll have to dig around.. I'll find it..

What with it being Summer and all, I thought I'd share some nice witchy/gardeny artwork I did. It was intended to be part of the design I created for a tee-shirt that Pagans would be wearing at the big Religious Rights rally across from the White House this 4th of July (Wednesday). For a couple of good reasons, the rally organizer decided against doing the tee-shirts, so I have the whole thing if you're into iron-on transfers and would like to make your own. Just give me a holler. The design features the Great Seal of the United States of America, but with various Pagan symbols in place of things like the arrows in the eagle's claws. Also (oh, and I'm so proud of this!) you know the gold ribbon held up by the eagle's beak? Instead of "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of Many, One [People]), it reads "Unum E Pluribus," which means "One of the Many." You can take that two ways: that there are many Pagans around and the wearer of the design is one of 'em, or just that in our diverse society, Pagans are as American as apple pie and eagles. Nice thought, either way.

Here's a part of the design that you might find sweet. No politics involved at all ;-)

I have a high rez version, naturally, if you'd like to adorn something with it via transfer stuff. Just holler and I'll send it to you.
