We're fairly new to participating in Advent, just the past 5 or 6 years. Our church really doesn't follow.
I have the book The 25 Days of Christmas - family readings, scriptures and activities for the Advent Season. I also found Handel's Messiah family advent reader at a book sale this year. I'd like to incorporate it into our celebration.
My girls are 13 & 10 so they're ready for more 'meat'. I was wondering what your Advent celebration looks like. Especially if you have teens.
We don't have candles. Maybe we could start that this year.

Deb- We always celebrated Advent with out girls mainly becuase we are Episcopalian so Advent is a big part of the Christmas preparation. Look up Advent wreaths and consider placing one on the table where you eat dinner each night and can light the candles and read some piece of scripture or meaningful passage. If you look up Advent you will find all of the scripture readings for the church and can use those as a starter or maybe the library will have something for celebrations. Making the wreath together is a fun family thing to do. This coming Sunday marks the beginning of Advent so you can make the wreath and prepare for Sunday night when you light the first candle. Advent is a wonderful way to slow down during this crazy season and refocus on what you are really trying to celebrate. It also helps to give the family a focus besides getting the house all decorated too soon. It is a wonderful way to provide you and your family time to "prepare". Enjoy adding this rich celebration to your family life!!

Advent is a huge part of our preparations for the Christmas celebration. Our Advent wreath is the centerpiece of our table for the holiday season. (It can be a little hard to find the pink and purple candles we need, but some years, we just use white)
I have an Advent "calendar" that hangs on our stairway. It is made up of cards hanging from a ribbon. Each morning, one of the boys takes out the card, brings it to the table and lights the candle(s). He reads the Scripture and little devotion that goes with it then opens the extra activity that I've tucked in. If you want, I can post a list of all our activities. I'm not quite finished with it yet. Usually, the activity is done that day, but sometimes we've had to wait a couple of days. As the boys have gotten older, the activities do change to accommodate their ages. One of their favorites is still sleeping around the tree though.
Then in the evening, after dinner is cleaned up and everyone is in their jammies, we light the wreath again and do about a 10-15 minute reading/devotion.
I've found that this has really helped to slow down our days in the pre-Christmas chaos and helped us to focus on building up our family relationships. It has also helped us to organize our days through December so that things are more spread out.
One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.

We are reading Bartholomew's Passage this year and read Jotham's Journey last year. Both are great additions to scripture reading/memorization and what not. I highly recommend them!
We've also had the kids work on memorizing the Christmas story in it's entirety. Amazingly enough, they do quite well (even as young as 7). We also sing Christmas carols together. I think candles are a great addition. We've done that in years past and it's quite special!
We of course have our advent calendar to count down the days till Christmas. Some years we get the ones with chocolate behind the doors, sometimes we make a paper chain. This year we are using a beautiful pop-up nativity advent calendar my mom bought for our family.
I love the season of advent! It's so wonderful to anticipate the return of Christ during this season of remembering His first arrival as a baby.
