Greetings all..just wanted to share an exciting thing happening on our farm in a week. I am hosting our 7th annual GoddessFest! 3 of my closest girlfriends come (2 from Seattle & 1 from DC) and we just have a ball.. They usually come to relax and depart from their very hectic worlds..They come to the farm to rejuvenate their bodies and spirits and it is such an honor to be the place they seek. We tend to do all kinds of things: wand making, crown making, sewing, cooking, rituals and so forth. I mention it so others can start their own Goddess Fests if you don't have them already. This year I'm making a big sign in the welcoming garden that will read "Goddess Fest 2007 Celebrating the Sacred Feminine Spirit" Should be fun...Here's to your sacred feminine spirits!

Sounds like fabulous fun!!! Wish I could come! Bev is having Apronstock 2008 next June out in her Meadow.
Oh, gotta do something like this here in VA too. Rosemary we keep saying we are going to get together, we gotta do it as soon as Nance in France gets back.
Oh, and have you been to 13 Moons in Occoquon? My brother and his family just moved up there.

Georgann, you read my mind about Nance from France! I was just thinking the very same thing yesterday. I think she said she'd be back in VA in September. NFF, chime in, honey! Awfully pretty time of year for a get-together, I say!
You know, though I've heard about it forever, I've never been to that shop in Occoquan, or any other place in the town except for the Belgian restaurant (still there?) that my husband took me to when we were dating. That would be a fun witchtrip, wouldn't it? I think there's a nice tea shop there, too, and a pretty river runs through it. Hmmmmm....

I have a question from you mama witches...when did your kids express interest in following a certain Pantheon? grace is all of a sudden FIERCELY interested in the Egyptian Culture, History and Pantheon. She wants to be Isis all the time-have you seen the flickr photo?:
She has Nefrititi necklaces us the wazoo and wants to read and know everything she can!
She is also obsessed with cheerleading right now-ever since she first saw my cheerleading pictures in high school and college year books, so i taught her the joke, "What do Egyptian cheerleaders say? Isis, Isis, Ra, Ra, Ra!" She LOVES IT and does it all of the time!!
So back to my question, when did your kids show an interest in a certain path of mythology?

Tasha, so glad Goddess Fest got the witchy wheels spinning! I tell you, Goddess Fest just sort of happened 7 years ago. A couple of women I knew casually were on a road trip and decided to stop by the farm and visit me since I had just moved here from the big city and surely must be feeling lonely...HA!! Well, they visited and they stayed...This was before we had children. I remember we spent one day..an entire day reading tarot cards and discussing them..it was positively luxurious. The 2 Goddesses have since become incredibly intimate friends..soul sisters and have visited every year since at least once a year. They have come every time to make my body casts when I've been pregnant. I was sewing this morning staring at them on my wall....what a gift they are! We don't do themes but something usually ends up happening..One year was all about string.. I had a bunch for some reason so we decided to do all kinds of things with it.. We also re-visited all the cat's cradle tricks with string. It was wonderful. Another year was all about lick'em stick'em tatoos... you can imagine! I will say and I've mentioned this before that glitter is ALWAYS involved..it is everywhere, on everything and I just love it! I have a sneaky suspiscion that this year will be focused on "HEALING"..one of my Goddesses is dealing with some serious health issues and another is dealing with life circumstances that get her depressed...time to think deeply on that and create an atmosphere where healing can start...we'll see.. I usually do something that creates the space but they always bring the "heart" of the matter... I never cease to be amazed at the power that is created and lifted in Her name. Truly astonishing....

The Egyptian thing...wow..how cool is that?! I just read a wonderful novel" The Goddess Queen" that is0 based on Nefertiti..it was a really fun read.. my kids are not there yet...Their mythology doesn't go beyond fairies, making wishes and Santa! They're also pretty fascinated by death and the Spirit world right now. We've had a lot of death on the farm this summer...kitties mostly.. I have a dog that despises them and chases down the kittens and kills them..its a bummer but we always turn it into some kind of educational thing.. One of the kittens was missing and we only discovered it after it was completely infested with maggots.. It was so gross it was cool! We've also had to deal with a chicken massacre..I forgot to close the pen one night and the dogs got in and killed 12 or more...that was a big clean up job that the kids were involved in...so we talk a lot about death and the spirit world.. Right now they understand that you die, you go to the spirit world and the garbage truck guy takes you there!!!!! LOL We're working on adding a little ritual and sanctity to the process but its a slow thing...

That sounds like so much fun, my 4 goddess sisters and I get together every once in a while and do stuff. But a goddess week end would be such fun.
We are all going to Italy in April of 2008, that should be a blast.
I have to come to this page more often

OK, I have been following this thread for a long time. Do you consider yourselves true witches in the traditional sense or are you Mother Earth type Goddesses? With the very spiritual and deep connection to Earth and the seasons some of the Great Spirit beliefs that our Native Americans have always believed in and worshiped? You mention Tarot cards, they are very powerful, not something to take too lightly. My Aunt could read them and be totally on target,many were very unsettled by this. I liked it.The Ouji is another thing that in the right hands, one that truly is gifted, can be very powerful. I am just very curious and would love to hear from you on your ideas and beliefs.

I am a Witch and I am not really sure why the need to differentiate from being in adoration of the Mother Earth. I have never personally met a "true Witch" who wasn't in tune with the Earth and Her cycles. The title of this thread, for instance is the Wheel of the Year. Witches tend to observe closely the cycle of the seasons and the changes of the Earth.
I use Tarot and have success. I have read for a couple of Women here as well as a number of people in my periphery and someone just called me recenlty from a referral from a friend. I think anyone, if they tune into their center and tune into the sounds-if you will- of the Universe will find that they have some sort of intuiting skill, be it dreaming, Tarot divination, Pendulum, Scrying, trance, crystal ball or whathaveyou. I have a desire to use the Ouiji board, but given that it is advisable to use it in a male and female pair and my husband is not *really* interested (he is Pagan as well) in that sort of divination at this time, we are passing on it for now.
As for Goddess worship, I have no pantheon that I have devotion to. I honor the female and the male because I believe in balance. My personal altar definitly reflects my honor of the female, however, as it is my personal altar as a woman. Not only does it honor the sacred female, the Goddess, it honors everything that is me!
there are a great many belief systems that revolve around honoring sacred female and male, not simply Native American or Witches or Goddess worship. Goddesses that I honor on my altar are from a variety of traditions, as they all mean something to me personally-even the Blessed Virgin!
So the only question I have for you is, can you clarify exactly what you mean when you differentiate a "true Witch" and Mother Earth type Goddesses? I hear that term when people refer to me as a hippie...and I might very well be a hippie girl, but my spirit goes much further than most people can even begin to understand and it isn't simply the feminist Goddess 'thing' that some people fall into when they don't really know anything about it all...does that make sense?

I am sorry Tasha, I think I offended you. I didn't mean to at all. I was just curious as to your beliefs, it fascinates me.My Grandmother and my Aunt were very intuitive and as I said my Aunt truly believed in the Tarot. She would not read for everyone. Myself I am very intuitive also. I just know certain things. I have been right so far when I get these feelings. It is a gift, it just comes to me when it wants, I have no control over it at all. I am not saying I am a Physic I just know what the outcome of some things will be. I wondered if you were Witches who made potions and cast spells? I guess that is what a lot of people see Witches as. Personally I see you as a beautiful soul who celebrates the cycles of the Earth and greatness of Women. If I said anything to upset you or make you think I was being judgemental, beleive me that is not the case. I am just a person who is truly interested in your beliefs.

oh no! I was not offended at all! I was just a little confused by your question!!
I think everyone, like I said, if they listen harde enough or just simply pay attention, has the ability to intuit in some way.
I do cast spells and potions, for me are symbolic reminders of the spell, and spells are really prayers in a sense, but more of a hands on sort of prayer....sending an intention out into the universe.
Does that help?

I think you're probably psychic and it is perfectly A.ok to say so...If you know things are going to happen...if you have a sense about things and time and time again have been right...hmmmm what an intuitive gift indeed..a psychic one in my book! I think Tasha is right on when she says most people have an intuitive side but culturally that has been severely suppressed in most people..sooo sad..the fact that you are so in tune is such a beautiful thing!
For me...I am a witch....a pagan...someone with an insatiable curiosity about all religions but I resonate most with those defined by the Earth's seasonal cycles as well as the phases of the moon. I crack up whenever I hear people use the word "hippie" as a descriptor. It implies to me that someone doesn't know how to pigeon hole me into some other kind of mainstream category so therefore I must be some kind of hippie...whatever that is !!!
I often use the word Goddess to describe that powerful energy we all possess by virtue of being women. Historically Goddesses were worshipped with great reverance and honor and their histories have been well defined for us to follow and assimilate for ourselves. Through centuries of paternalistic teaching, women have been subdued..our energies suppressed. For me, calling upon the Goddesses of old reminds me of the powers we all possess as we seek to elevate the common good.
Spell castings and potions....you betcha! Spell casting is, like Tasha said so eloquenty, just a ritualized way to project one's thoughts, hopes, grievances and dreams...Prayers are extremely ritualized in many religions. It just so happens that during the witch craze of the 17th and 18th centuries "casting spells" was demonized. It was an extremely successful and brutal oppression of women. Amazing to study now!
Potions....wondering what you're thinking about here..But if you're referring to being an herbalist and using natural methods of healing...yessirreee..I also make soap, and lotions too..Glitter....glitter is VERY important to my witchy world!!
Tasha I really loved your description of balancing both the female and male energies. I, too, find that very important. My spiritual sense, however leans heavily in the feminine realm although my physical life has much more balance in that regard.
I agree that Tarot cards can be very intense and they are not to be taken lightly. My twin brother gave me my deck when we turned 30! It was such a great gift. I don't use them as often as I would like and every time I pull them out I think, "Gee, I should use these more often!"
There it is....my 2 cents!

The fall equinox is soon approaching, or harvest moon if I'm reading my we'moon planner right. Thanks for suggesting that planner Tasha, I have loved it all year. What kinds of things/celebrations do yall plan for the harvest moon?

Julia, that was such a beautiful description of your beliefs. You and Tasha have made it so much clearer to me. I always have been so in tune with nature ever since I was a little girl. A gift from my Dad I suppose. He appreciated it and loved it so much and always taught me everything he could about it, which was a lot. I am not a church goer,I feel closer to God in my forest and my fields and especially near beautfiul creeks and lakes.For people who find their strength in churches I say God Bless them, but it never fulfilled me. I always have felt it was how you act and how you treat each other and animals and our Earth that is what is important. I also feel women have been under appreciated for most of time. I love women,we give each other so much support and love and understanding. I think women need to be celebrated and I am so glad that so many of us are trying to make our own lives as happy and fulfilling for ourselves as we try to do for everyone else. The things you chersih and the principals you live by
are very moving. I look forward to reading and learning more about all of you.

Mabon is neigh upon us....................any suggestions for simple celebrations?
I will be roasting root veggies, making crusty cornbread and having fresh tomato soup with rosemary sprigs.
My daughters and I will be taking a nature walk in our woods to collect a few acorns and leaves and setting up a nature table...thanks to the inspiration of Tasha and her daughters.

aunt george, your nature walk sounds simply wonderful and wonderfun! We do a very simple celebration around this time of year. We call it "putting the gardens to bed".. once the clean up has been done, the tilling and last of the harvesting etc..we take dried petals that I save from flower bouquets and put in our ritual bowl and toss them to the wind making wishes. I'm in the process of teaching the kids how to make a proper "wish" which is to say the wish out loud and repeat these enchanting words:
May I be kind in all I say and do
So my wish, this (fairy or birthday) wish will come true.
then we say our wish and toss the petals all around the gardens. Very fun!
