I know I have so much in my life to be grateful for, I know this, but...
I am not from Louisiana, but I've been here 13 years with my husband, living in a hundred year old house that needs SO much repaired, on an acre that everything I've planted has died, except an ugly old sweet olive bush and some palms, and a rose bush I forgot about till now. Louisiana is heat and humidity, more heat and bugs and storms, weeds that grow into trees, I could go on and on; suffice it to say it's the most miserable place I've ever been, and in telling you this, perhaps you'll understand that I'm exhausted from living in a climate and culture I don't understand and I hate it here. Every time I mow or use the weedeater there is some problem with the equipment, but I try and I try it again, sometimes with good results, so...I go out there every time enthusiastic and come away, well, I just can't find words...a tantrum doesn't come close to how I feel, mad, discouraged, frustrated; I feel like the poster-child for the scripture:
Unless the LORD builds the house,They labor in vain who build it;Unless the LORD guards the city,The watchman keeps awake in vain.
Psalm 127:1-3

It's futile...I feel like I've lost my joy! I try to be grateful, optomistic, but I feel I'm wasting my life here.
So, I just had to tell somebody...I know it sounds like a whiney-baby story, but it's been really gettin' to me.

Say to them, may the Lord bless you and protect you, May the Lord smile upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you His favor and give you His peace. (Numbers 6:23-26)

I understand completely. My landlord's farm where I live is EXACTLY like that. Sometimes I just want to pack a bag a walk away.

Have you shared your frustration with your hubby?
I wish I had all wise word Chandra *big farmsister hug* I hope maybe you can hire someone, handyman-like, to come around and fix things a bit at a time. Nothing like living in a constantly falling apart house to lower your spirits.

Oh, Annika, thank you so much. Yes, DH has heard it all...time and time again. We talk about moving back to Colorado (my home) when he retires, but it's really about me learning to live here in the mean time. DH is from Louisiana and since we moved here he has thrived, and me, well, not so much.
As far as fixing things, DH can do all of it, we actually do all of that together, but the house needs a total rennovation which @ our age, we don't want that kind of debt...so, it's really a matter of adjusting and making do. I'm just griping...I'm getting old and the hassles got to me today. Thanks Annika, I needed a "big farmsister hug".

Chandra, I am so sorry you are so frustrated and unhappy there. My mom told me years ago when she was young and married to my dad and just starting out that she wasn't always happy where they lived. My dad was a teacher and they moved quite a lot. But she always tried to make the best of where ever she was. She joined clubs and was always busy. I'll never forget that. I was always happy growing up no matter where we lived because she always tried to make it the best place ever. For us and for her. And I remember the old saying "Bloom where you are planted." It looks like you are a Christian. Have you prayed about how you feel? I know God is interested in our happiness. It sounds like your hubby is ok with moving back to Col. for you. How much longer til he retires? I hope you can hang in there a little longer.

Hugs, Kris

Hi Kristin...thank you, for your kind words, and I needed hugs. It means a lot just to be able to "speak" about my situation, and I appreciate the wisdom you and Annika have shared.

We're several years before retirement, we're working the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace program to be out of debt, so we've made a lot of progress in our 13 years here.
Like I said earlier, I have much to be thankful for, I just needed to vent about stuff, most of which I can't do a thing about. Usually, I'm content and have the coping skills to deal with any situation, today it was all little stuff, rather than some of the real problems many of the farmgirls on here face...it was just a bunch of little stuff & I didn't think about the addage "Don't sweat the small stuff"...
It was just so stupid; I was hot from mowing & picking up about a hundred branches so I wouldn't mow over them and wreck the lawnmower blades. So, then, when I'm finally ready to be finished, I couldn't find the air nozzle for the compressor to blow the grass off the mower before I put it away, so I called my DH to ask where it was and he has it in his truck and it's just ridiculous, it made me mad it wasn't where it was supposed to be and then to have to wait for him. So, I'll try to restrain myself from whiney posts in the future. I was just thinking on all the things that've been bugging me here, year after year, and I had my temper tantrum; I'm over it.
Thanks farmgirls...

Oh Marly, now I've hurt your feelings and I didn't mean for that to happen. I know you love Louisiana and most days I'm happy enough to be here too, it's just been too much this summer. I hope you'll forgive a cold weather Colorado girl for spoutin'-off.

well, girl, i feel your pain. When I first moved to BC from my home state of Texas, I thought I had gone to a rainy HELL. Eighteen years later, there are times I still have fits too, but I try to keep it to a minimum. is it ever tempting when it's been raining for months on end and I'm sloggin' through 6 inches of mud to feed the goats. i finally learned not to try to grow sweet potatoes (just last year, hard headed Texan that I am), but appreciate that I can grow lots of other stuff that Texas weather would make toast of, and quick. I have the "Bloom where you are Planted" saying in a couple of places in my house and believe it or not, it helps. and once in a while, a temper tantrum helps too. ;-) Hugs to you from someone who has been in your shoes.

Chandra, I really do know what you mean about things tearing up and things going wrong. I have posted several times about that very same thing. My hubby drives a truck. Need I say more? I have to do everything around here if it needs to be done. And I am hard on things too. I am always tearing up the mowers and the tillers. Then I have to wait til hubby gets home to fix them. By then the grass is 5' high. Or the weeds. It's very frustrating for sure. So I know that part of it. But I am very fortunate to live where I do. I love it here. Well, except for the humidy. The heat. The cold. The flies. The bugs. Did I mention snakes yet? The snakes. No neighbors. Everything is hundreds of miles away. I guess I could go on and on. But there sre so many more things I just love about this place.

SO maybe you could make a list of things that are good about your area and where you live. Then do the list about the things you don't like. I bet that list will be shorter when you are done.

And just take one day at a time. Try not to look to the future and enjoy this day.

Hugs, Kris

Hello from another Colo girl!
I know just what you are going through . As a newlywed my husband moved me away from the front range to Rock Springs Wy. Believe me it is named correctly. It is all rock sand and wind .I cried when I saw it for the first time . I longed for home . Nothing grew . I just had to keep reminding myself that hubby had a good job there at a time when there were none in Colo.I fought it for the first 5 years then I began to see the beautiful of the desert . I loved to see the cactus blooming and found things that would grow . We spent 14 years there and I actually cried when we moved back to Colo. Stop fighting La and find something to love and your time will be much more enjoyable. I loved what the other gal said . Bloom where you are planted.

Everyone needs to whine every now an then. I bet Louisana is great in the winter. I moved only 30 miles from where I grew up and it was a big adjustment for me. Here is a (((BIG HUG))). It will get better, especially with all the farm girls saying a prayer for you.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

Ramona,
You made me laugh! I am another Hard-headed Texan, and have lived in CT 16 years, East Coast total of 18+. Most times, I still think they don't know what to make of me. But, "Bloom Where You Are Planted" is my favorite saying. Chandra, sometimes we all {think} things would be better, rosier, all-around happier if we where "home", but try to keep in mind anything at all you would miss about LA. There has to be something, someone, you hold dear there. I feel your pain, I have felt that way many a time. Hugs to you, sweetie.

Chandra. what a funny world we live in! I have been in COlorado all my life. but my husband and I are moving to Missouri for retirement because everything is so expensive here and everything is so BROWN. We haven't had any rain for 8 weeks. We went to Missouri for vacation and it was so pretty and green there! The grass is always greener, I guess. Why don't you contact a garden club and find out what kind of plants thrive there? I am sure that different plants grow in different parts of the USA, and they might be able to give you some ideas. Good luck to you.

Hi Chandra,

I thought about your post today...I'm in East Texas, so I understand a lot of your frustrations with the humidity, heat, and WEEDS. Some days it feels like we are living in a greenhouse down here! And, I'll be honest, I hate September. It is typically our driest month. Unless we get a hurricane/tropical storm, we won't see much relief until mid to late October. I pretty much kiss the garden goodbye in July and don't do much until now.

'What' you plant is just as important as when you plant. I don't plant much of anything past May, to be honest. If you do, you're pretty much setting yourself up for a heartache. It will burn in the sun and dry to a crispy wisp. For my perennials, I collect the rainwater in the spring and just give em enough to keep them alive until the October rains. BUT, there are also great things about living closer to the equator. Our winters are typically mild, so winter gardeniing is very, very do-able and fun to do. Truly, our 'growing season' is almost year round, maybe minus a couple of months.

As far as your house goes, I LOVE old houses. My first house was 104 when I moved into it. Yes, sometimes it did seem like a money pit, but all you can do is go one day at a time, right? Our current house is almost 60 years old. Just think...the materials used to build your house can't even be purchased anymore, like old-growth pine, etc. Unless the house is falling in on itself, I bet your house is actually more stable than many of the newer homes. Even our house needs lots of work and love (OH, TRUST ME on that one), but you just have to do the work as you can...it's like home triage! No matter how new your home is, it is always and forever something going wrong with it.

I laughed when you mentioned the air compressor thing, because I did the exact same thing one day...couldn't find it in the 'Man Shop' of my husband's and boy I was blowing some steam! I needed to air up the tire on my car so I could pick my daughter up from school. I had to call him at work and just restrain myself from going nuts, lol. Going into the Man Shop is like my husband trying to find something in my purse! So, I got over myself pretty quickly. He has his little space and I have mine :0)

P.s. we're doing the Ramsey plan and I am lovin' it!

Cheers!

Chandra dear, you rant and rave and whine and scream all you need to. I do it quite often on here. I am in my own personal misery where I live, even though I stayed in my home state. I moved into my in-laws house after my FIL passed away. I am living with my MIL and we don't even come close to seein eye to eye. I spent a year cryin and dyin here while I was forced to live my in-laws life and way. Finally my hubby started to see that his wife had checked out. Now my MIL has her own apartment on the back side of the house, there is none of their decorating left in the house, I have a huge garden, a root cellar in the basement, and next year we're knockin down some walls and redoin the floor plan so the house will be truly ours. I am still unhappy sometimes because of the situation and the constant interference I have to live with, but that's when I turn to my farmgirl sisters for a friendly ear and some advice.

I wish I was there to give you a shoulder and somewhere to go to get away. Have you tried to contact your local extension office or it's likeness down there? They might be able to help you with figurin out what you can plant and grow. What are your hobbies and interests? Maybe there's a club you could join or a class that might be fun to take. I have found that learnin new things and acquirin new skills make me feel stronger and more capable. Then I do better handlin the things around me. Just a thought.

Chandra, some days, it just all gets to you.

If you can't love the whole picture, sometimes you can like parts of it.

I'm not from Iowa, and I pray every day for the Lord to show me the good people I know live here, cause I seem to run into all the mean spirited, lazy, selfish, prejudiced old ladies. Last winter was really tough, it snowed from the time the leaves fell until they came back in spring. But I do meet good wonderful people and there are beautiful days. Even though these people could learn a few things about country hospitality, there many good qualities that do help me appreciate them.

You don't have to bloom where you are planted, you are a person with a mind and a soul, but sometimes you do have to pray really hard and remain very open, and sometimes, the only way to love a people, is to remind yourself they are Gods creation, even though if it were up to you, you would have scrapped that oarticular part of creation!
And personally, I would love to live somewhere with a little cultural diversity, I am usually the darkest one around, and I am Asian and white, so naturally people here think I'm Mexican!

Lastly, the above illustrates how people behave in my part of the state, they really are much better in other areas of the state, like night and day in some places!
Could be the same for you.
Big hugs and love to you, and I pray that God helps you find something precious about Louisiana for yourself.

Kristin, Diane, Susan, Angela, Barb, Nicole, Annika, Amanda; farmgirls, I just knew you'd understand, then set me straight & tell me, "alright, you've done your whinin', now get over yourself...
Thanks, for the hugs, the empathy, the incredible stories you share of just getting through it... I'll make it a point to post in several places, "bloom where you're planted".
Barb, my user name MasterGardener was chosen because it's one of the few programs I've actually completed. It wasn't until after I'd planted here @ the house for several years that I got involved in the MG program here in LA and learned about better choices for this climate and zone...so,past couple of years all we've planted is a kitchen garden which has had some good results, oh and I can't forget the 65 palm seeds and seedlings a friend gave us, which are in their second year and thriving...so there is some good news to report.
We love this old house...it's cypress,(covered with vinyl siding) so it's amazing to think how the wood was harvested and brought here by wagon...huge timbers and planks. I'ts beautiful. The wood isn't even available anymore. But while we DO love the house, it's not without some real problems, which have compounded in recent years; the house is hard to cool in summers and just the opposite in winters, the insurance on a wood home/structure in Louisiana is exorbitant, especially since the hurricanes in recent years, gone up 400% in three years...
Most times I love being here, my husband & I are blessed, it is such a beautiful property. I don't know if I ever really thought we'd own a home, so that we do seems incredible in itself.
Kristin...you REALLY do understand what I'm saying...oh, yea, snakes,o'possums, armadillos, bugs, the list is long...not so many snakes this year thank the Lord.
All in all farmgirls, I'm gettin' old, just celebrated turning 51, dealing with the menopause and so on and just had a crisis day and I'm over it and I appreciate being able to air it here and get a better perspective on it.
Thank you, for the prayers & kind words, well, for so many reasons...

Chandra, your house sounds beautiful. And like mine. We have a limestone house. You'd think it would be cool in the summer but NO. And freezing in winter. This is truely a money pit. We have sunk about $50,000. in it so far. But I love it. And You are not old! I just turned 52. I feel like I am 25 still. Well, sometimes. When I can walk without pain. I do so much around here I am always getting hurt. But at least I can still do things. Like chase cows and turkeys and goats. And chickens. That's always fun.

Anyway, sounds like you are feeling a little better. Why can't you take a little trip back to Col? I'd like to go in the spring to see my brother and sister. They are in Col. Springs. I've been a few times. It's ok but I love it here. And it's so far away. 2 days to get there driving.

And I have always wanted to go to LA and go to one of those places that cook the seafood and throw it on the newspaper covered tables and dance to Cajun music and drink beer. That sounds like so much fun. I love crawfish. My DIL is from there and she brought some up on the way back to Indiana one time. We all went out on the back porch and pigged out on the best crawfish. Anyway, one day I am going. Maybe you could show me some of the good places.

Hugs, Kris

Kristin, I know well that feeling of youthfullness, till the wrist gives out and the ankles, or the hip pain starts...
There is so much I want to do, especially when I read about the lifestyles of all y'all real farmgirls, (we don't even have chickens, even after pleading) so, it really brings to light the fact that I have no reason to complain. Ya'll must work round the clock to accomplish all you do.
Yep, my mom and sister are in C. Springs, and two other sisters in Greeley. We haven't been back, well, because I haven't been employed for several years, so we made sure DH was able to fly to Washington each year to visit his son and grand-daughter, and my step-mom recently passed so we made the trip to New Mexico for the funeral and had a reunion of sorts, with my mom and sister. So, it's been about being broke mostly. DH has made it possible for me to stay home, but that has it's consequence also, meaning fewer liberties and luxuries. I did work @ Lowe's for a few months to pay for the earlier mentioned insurance premium that was sprung on us with no prior knowledge, and I just left a four month stint with Sears, one of their parts and repair centers, which paid off my last credit card (it's difficult to be totally dependant on another person and I was feeling impatient with the progress we were/weren't making doing Financial Peace, and a little guilty I suppose, so got a job) and now I'm supposed to be building up a little business of my own, cottage industry, so, that's my goal for the rest of this year while DH pays off his credit card.
Kris, I have to admit, DH & I aren't particularly fond of crawfish. It's fun to experience a crawfish boil, we've been to a few, and folks took pity on me cause I didn't peel the crawfish fast enough to really get much, so they'd peel for me...they love watching visitors struggle so they can show you how it's supposed to be done, that's when it gets fun. We made the acquaintance of a couple that own a seafood restaurant and that's some good food, gumbo's and platters of different seafood, and then of course the big tray's of crawfish too.
Lynn (DH)isn't cajun, not a hunter either, but he can drop an armadillo at a single shot when necessary. His grandmother was a Home Ec teacher, was strict about grammer so not much accent noticeable. He's incredible and I am blessed, don't know how we've managed to stay together 22 years, but I am grateful beyond words, probably Divine Intervention @ work.

We met in Colorado Springs, so DH knows and loves the 4 seasons & the mountain ranges Colorado offered, that's probably why we both think about retiring there, but I know it's not the same as 13 years ago, time will tell where we go from here.

Anyway farmgirls, I think I'll put this topic to rest. Thank you for being here and sharing.

Blessed be,
Chandra

P.s. I've been playing around with the spelling of my name ( weird I know) and I've decided that I will stick with Hannah for good. Sorry I got you all confused. Hugs!!

MasterGardener, welcome to the human race! We all need to blow off steam occasionally.

I love my life, but some days...I live in a 40 yr old mobile home. Well, in the interest of truth, I live in a double wide trailer. My hubby keeps it in very good repair and has added lots of things that make it home and comfy. I have learned to rejoice in the whole "trailer trash" persona and have a lot of fun with it now. And you know what? We own it free and clear as well as our 10 acre homesite!
For years I had a quote from St. Paul posted on my fridge and I don't remember the verse #, but it went something like, "I have learned whatever state I am, therein to be content." I always thought I would like to be in a warmer state than Idaho. Green tomatoes and unripe corn in the garden this am and it is cloudy and chilly, but I have a lovely fire in the wood stove and a computer to chat with you, so life is good!

That's it with my old place. Bought raw land and put the place up a bit at a time. It is still Alaskan Wallpaper in most places (plastic covering insulation) but it's warm dry and paid for.

Hi Kathy,
First, hello and welcome to MaryJane's farmgirl connection. I remember I felt like I'd found home sweet home when I first found this site. I hope you'll love it here as we all do.

Thankfully, my tantrum has passed, I "feel the love" once again, and also came to realize that my life & our home is still a work in progress...

I was impressed @ how excellent your memory was with the verse.
I took the liberty of copying and pasting the verse from Bible Gateway website:

Philippians 4:11
Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
(King James Version)

What a wonderful reminder to have on the fridge, thanks Kathy!

Say to them, may the Lord bless you and protect you, May the Lord smile upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you His favor and give you His peace. (Numbers 6:23-26)
