The light finally dawns!!! Okay, I get it now. . . I'm going to pick 3 different kinds of fabric, cut 8 squares of each of those, send in 24 pieces. it may take me a little longer to catch on but i do like those "lightbulb" moments. :)

But when you wash the unwashed squares, won't they shrink and fray?

I've never heard of not washing your fabric before putting it in a quilt.

Hello, Happy Holiday!
Okay, so we have 8 of us participating. Sounds like we are sending in 3, 12" pieces for each person, total 24 charm squares.
I do not quilt with my fabric, I have made totes, pillows, dolls etc. I may be a bad seamstress but I do not pre - wash when I work on those projects.
I have an online fabric shop so all of my fabric are on bolts.
I will send mine in unwashed with a note stating so.
If I have to I will pre - wash.
One more day!

For those of you concerned with how to handle unwashed charm squares you may recieve, you can preshrink fabrics that are already cut. Pour very hot almost boiling water over your fabric squares in a bowl or pot, make sure the fabric gets thouroughly wet, then let cool to room temperature. Steam press your squares dry. They will shrink and the edges won't fray.

the shrinkage on a 12 inch square is very minimal as it does not have a hugh surface area. Also since we are probably cutting these up to make other items it dosn't matter a whole lot that way either. the only concern would be if you are using them straight as your block. then there might be a little problem even then not so much. I always use unwashed fabric have been quilting for 20 + years and no problems when I wash items. I wont say that is how every one is that is my record. I have been the past historian of the Utah valley quilt guild and assisntant librarian I have never seen proof that one way is better than the other they are just differnet ways of approching the same problem. It is like driving a car in europe and here done on opposite sides of the road not wrong just differnet but the same thing is done in the end you get to where you are going to.

I go along with what ever you all decide . 2 or 3 is fine for me . The more the merrier . I do wash most of my fabric . But I have done several projects with unwasedd fabric and they turned out fine . When I want to wash a smaller piece , I just do it by hand in the bathroom sink . Sorry some of you had to drop out . Fabric is expensive .

I can't seem to catch up this week and I need to replace my rotary blade. I'm still in but running behind my schedule a bit. I will send out my charm squares, on Monday priority mail to make the 15th deadline.
Have a great Friday!
