Good rainy morning from Michigan...... Yesterday I made it to the library and picked up the first two "Little House" books. It was beautiful outside, so in the evening I read half of the first book, while sitting on the front porch. All I can say is "Thank you Jesus for letting me be born at a later date." LOL I really admire the women of yesterday year. Looking forward to the discussion. Hope everyone has a wonderfully blessed day.

I guess that I am different. I would have loved to live in that time period. I just started reading the second book. By the way...it's raining here too.

I have a name for the book club :)
Little House on MJF
I can't wait to get started too! I never read these as a young girl, it wasn't until after I got married about 13 years ago. Every year I read them and am so blessed by them :) Looking forward to chatting with you girls!

Hello Julie,
I guess I'd better rephrase my other message regarding living in that time period. Preparing all that food for the Winter would have been okay, but I was thinking more regarding no insulation in the house or window panes. When I was a kid on the our farm, we didn't have running water in the house. So we had to go out to turn on the windmill and it pumped water into this huge tank in the attic. We had an outhouse, had to heat water and take sponge baths because we had no tub or bathroom. Bathing took place in the kitchen next to a wood stove.I remember very well, going to cut truck loads of wood for winter, canning every vegetable or fruit for storage. We didn't have a freezer but there was a storage spot under the windmill(you had to climb down a ladder next to the piping)and it would keep meats frozed for as long as it was winter. We had electricity (used sparingly) but no phone. The time period was the 1950's. Not so long ago. But we did have insulation in the house and glass in the windows. I often crave for a simpler time of life, things move too fast these days. But I think my favorite time period would have to be the Victorian Era.
Stay dry, Carmen Farmgirl #1443

When you put it that way....it sounds like a hardship.

I want to join this book club.......what a fun idea to try the activities....it's an interactive bookclub! I like it! book discussions can probably be found online if you're still looking for discussion questions...Where did the book take place? What is it like there today? Maybe a farmgirl from there could let us know? If you were going to make a movie of the book, who would you choose to be the movie stars? what was one thing that really made an impression on you and why? ah, here's just a few questions if you're still looking for some...I had a travel book club for a while. I hope I can keep up...this farmgirl stuff, is a full time job if you let it be...I'm talking just these chatrooms! It's so much fun, I wanna do everything! My husband thinks I've gone totally mad! LOL! |

Monica,
We're happy to have you! That's a good idea to look online for discussion questions. I agree being a farmgirl is a full time job!

Looking forward to the projects. Only 35 pages left to read in the first book so I'll be done in time for the weekend! When you post the new thread, are you putting it under the reading room category. I want to make sure I can find it! All the best, Tina

I am so in! I think I'll try using these as our "reading" books for my 4 and 5 year olds although I don't know how well their attention will be held.

Hi Tami,
When I read these books to my daughters, I made them little aprons to wear during reading time. They would pretend to be Luara and Mary and since they had seen the TV program, it worked pretty well.

Melissa Gilbert (Laura in the TV series) is playing the Mom on stage in Dallas at the moment. Wish I was able to see her, but unemployment is not exactly conducive to partaking of the Arts! LOL
Best to all, Mel

My apologies please, I said, I wanted to do this and I do, but I forgot about my big state exam coming up within the next few weeks, and I really need to be reading and studying for that, so I'm going to have to retract my signup from this until a later date. I'm sorry, for signing up and then backing out...I need to be careful not to get so darn excited over all these swaps and sign ups! It's so much fun though! What a great idea! Maybe I can catch up after my exams! Thanks for understanding!

My kids and I saw the Little House Musical in St. Paul last year. Melissa Gilbert was a great "Ma!" Although, she isn't much of a singer, so that part was weaker than the others (just one solo), but all in all is was a great production!
