Hi Girls!
I just met a new farmgirl Jan over at the Welcome Wagon.. In her introductory post she mentioned how MJF inspired her to take up crocheting this winter... YAY JAN!
I thought it would be fun to find out how MJF has inspired other farmgirls too so I brought the thread over here!
I'll kick it off
From the first issue I read, MJF inspired me to reclaim and celebrate my inner farmgirl. One thing we did was plant a veggie garden last spring. We were careful to be as organic as possible.We used our own home made " cock a doodle doo" courtesy of our " girls". The garden did fairly well, despite a lot of rain. We had loads of golden cherry tomatoes, summer and zuccini squash, peas,lettece, and cabbage( which the guinea pigs loved). We will do it again this spring!
I was also inspired to " hatch" my blog. I had been sitting on that idea for nearly a year. I wanted a place to share all things home, family, home-schooling, creative recycling and plain old inspiration,(there's that word again).
I treasure the spirit of the magazine and the fellowship that comes with it!
Over all, MJF has inspired me to believe in my dreams and keep at it!

We meet at last! :) I am a faithful follower of YOUR WORDS on the Rural farmgirl blog! I think you're right! It might be easier to focus on what she HASN'T INSPIRED us to do! lol!
After I posted this thread I went upstairs to make breakfast for my gang. I was pondering the question , " What is it that makes farmgirls different?" (another thread perhaps?) LOL
In a word... OPTIMISM...we all have challenges, joy and sorrow, pain and happiness... and farmgirls seem to make the most of that too! Challenge makes us stronger and wiser, illness gives us time to rest and re-access, hard times bring us closer to what really matters, and our cheritable hearts,well,it just makes us feel better to do something good!

I thought that I knew all about mags, but after one of my most favorite was cancelled, Home Companion I was crushed. I found myself going back to the old issues to find inspiration in my crafting and art work. I did the same with my old issues of Victoria magazines. I felt at times like Grandma Moses waiting until I was older to Light on the "right" craft/art for me. Know how to do just enough of certain crafts to be dangerous, but not truly talented, but I do have a small following for those that find my items for sale. I was at a thrift store 50 miles away from my boyfriends home, it was just before Christmas and he had redeemed one of the "free time coupons" I had given him the year before...{he gets his own free time at home to do what he wants ( sleep) with no bad feelings from me} and there was this magazine I had never heard of before. If I told you what I thought of when I first saw the name, I almost passed it over... in law enforcement maryjanes farm has a very different connotation. But looking at the cover with its pink McCoy pottery vase I thought that maybe this was worth looking at. Wow. I was blown away. I live in a part of North Dakota that is just so barely getting into recycling that isn't just for the "weirdo's" Our city has just implemented a recycling program...
I have been doing a very small re-do of items for a number of years, but I have been re- inspired almost daily coming to the site. Thank you for the mag, thank you for the site and most of all thanks to all of you for your openness and interest in maintaining this site as an inspiration to all.
So what I'm trying to say is that MJF has inspired me to continue to discover my real light in this world. |

MJF has inspired me to become my grandma - no really, my grandma was one of those use it up farmgirls, but growing up in the suburbs I didn't really appreciate the things she did. Reading MaryJane'sFarm helps me to realize how much I really learned from my grandma, and grandpa too, without knowing it at the time. They played games every night, either cribbage or scrabble, to see who did the dishes - they had a home with a lot of love but not a lot of money. They grew a huge garden every year and all the gifts were homemade. Both Grandma and Grandpa served their community in a variety of ways - these are the things that I feel MJF emphasizes, and has helped me to reconnect with

Boy,where to begin? MJF has inspired me to become more self reliant,from making my own clothes & accessories to having a small business....this includes all you farmgirls,BTW,who have encouraged me in my learning to drive & fighting the fears that held me back (I'm needing to master parallel parking,then I think I'll be ready for my actual test!) it's inspired me to become a better,more caring person-and to live my dreams and aspirations while being practical.(ie buying a used student fiddle from Goodwill online auctions for $39 instead of spending alot more for a new one) I'm wanting to be more like my great grandmother,who used to raise her own chickens & rabbits for food in addition to a veggie garden-not relying so much on stores but providing as much of your own groceries as is possible. I'm inspired to be more myself,an old fashioned girl who loves antiques and old time music.

I have been inspired to make yogurt!
I have been inspired to be more crafty by the creative ladies here.
And I love having the opportunities to volunteer my time and sewing
machine for others in need. I'm grateful to be a part of MJF.

What a GREAT topic!!
MJF inspired me to reach way beyond my comfort zone once more! Sometimes we fall into an all to familiar routine and forget to take the time to grow. She also inspired me to get back to trying new recipes, baking my own bread once again and giving me the opportunity to reach out to others who are "Farmgirls at Heart"!!
Living in the mountains is a special lifestyle and at times leaves you isolated from others. So having a place to connect with other Farmgirl's has also been a huge blessing which continues to inspire me in so many ways!

I started getting Mary Jane's Farm because my magazine was cancelled too, Cottage Living. I suppose it encouraged a change. I think the magazine has encouraged me to be more down to earth and to learn new things.

I have been inspired to just be me. I am ok with what I do and where I live. I was already a farmgirl when I first saw the magazine. So it just reinforced the way I thought. It's so good to see other like-minded women and young ladies who are starting their journies. I love this forum, too. It's very inspiring to come here and meet with friends and make new friends and see what gets them all going.

I have been inspired to do more craft projects. I had pretty much stopped doing any, which was a bummer because I LOVE crafting! The swaps on the Barter Page and the Stiching Room have really inspired me to get back into things.
I have also been inspired to connect with other likeminded Farmgirls in my community! Most everyone I talk to is really enthusiastic about starting a Farmgirl Sisterhood Chapter here locally. We are going to have a kickoff meeting on the 27th!!

It's so great to hear everyone's different "inspirations" prompted my Mary Janes Farm Magazine! Thank you for sharing them here... A few of you mentioned how some of your favorite magazines had been cancelled.. I had forgotten all about that but I remember the hole I felt when my two favorites at the time were cancelled too.
When I happened upon MJF at the book store I was thrilled and continue to be with every issue!
It's funny, Mary Jane is all about growing good healthy food and because of that there is an entire fellowship of farmgirls "GROWING" in different ways because of her hard toiling on the farm.
The message is not about being perfect or better than someone else... it's about being yourself,being resourceful in common sense and creative ways, honoring your talents and sharing them with others...and so much more!

I too have been inspired to live more like my Grandmother. More "real" food and less pre-packaged frankenfood. To grow my own and preserve what I've grown for the future or to give away. To make my own clothes and not settle for cheap imports, to nuture my soul with working hard in the garden in the fresh air or calming myself with the meditative repetition of knitting or crocheting. In short to live a more content life.

You are a hoot! I am honored you popped over to Dandelion House and that I have inspired your next post! I can hardly wait... the preview you gave us here has wetted my appetite for more on your " fear of rodents"... LOL!!!
If it makes you feel any better...Should you you ever find yourself at my house for tea, rest assured, Oreo and Scooter will be " in their cage " not darting around the dining room! PROMISE! :) I hope the little " cutie pies won't keep you from visiting again!!! :) ( laughing here )
It's amazing what we parents will do for our children... I would never have imagined that I would have " rodents" in my home either! The same sweet daugher that convinced us to get them, also talked us into our chickens and our Corgi!
They don't leave us feeling the least bit faint!

I'm still laughing.... I can only imagine the " start" you got when you scrolled down and saw the close up of Oreo and Scooter... ha ha ha ha ....
fyi... That was their one and only appearance!
They are not hidden anywhere else on my blog... no need to fear!!!
o.k... I have to get a hold of myself. I'm getting hysterical now...:)

Well, I think Oreo and Scooter are precious! My first pet was a guinea pig named Easter (I got him on my birthday which happened to be one day away from Easter that year). I loved Easter with all my heart but alas, he was left outside by my younger sister and and a neighbors dog/cat? got him. He was my firt pet, my first love and my first leason about death.

So sorry to hear your tale about Easter... Oreo and Scooter were our children's first pets and their first lessons in death too... :( A lesson we all have to have our first in.. Theirs just no way around it...

Can you say genuine? Mary Jane IS pure inspiration! I have learned to become more imaginative, intuitive, and to be myself at long last in my late 40's. I feel that she has been an inspiration to be more genuine and outgoing with what I feel is important in life. I am glad to live in Moscow Idaho and have her as a fellow Moscow-ite =) Such a down to earth and inspirational person. She is one of a kind =) I think we'll keep her ;)

I have gotten more into my crafts. I love the swaps and sitting down and handsewing my first swap made me feel so good. And I love all the natural healing ideas. Also, it's so nice to know that there are farmgirls go there that really care and understand what you are going through. And I'm glad that I can be here for someone else. It just seems that in our everyday life(outside of Mary Jane) people are just too busy to take the time. I feel very blessed to have gotten to know so many wonderful ladies.
