My dh got permission from our Township super to raise chickens!!..we were under the assumption that we needed 2 acres but found out that our 1 and 1/2 is enough..we can have up to 25, no roosters(okay with that)..I only want a few layers for fresh eggs..Any help for a newbie at chickens would be great

Yeah! I love my chickens! I would suggest 3-5 layers and you will get pleanty of eggs for you and some to share! If you get chicks it could be 5 months or more til they start laying. If you can get older ones you will have eggs sooner. Check out backyardchickens.com it is a great resource. I have 30 buff orpingtons! Just email me if you have any questions!

I think my word of wisdom would be to make sure you give them oyster shell regularly. Oh and I ran into a problem with worms. I suggest worming thru there water once a month. I enjoy mine.

It's all good!

You will be amazed at how fast you will love them. I always get chicks because I like to watch them grow, the eggs are worth the wait. I get Keeping Chickens newsletter and have learned a few things from that. Michelle, how did you know yours had worms? Carol

That's great.

I'm getting my first chicks this spring too! I can't wait to hear about your progress.
