Oh let's see...
I make all our meals from scratch....with the exception of pizza and also bake batches of cookies throughout the cold winter months to freeze and enjoy later on in the summer
All Christmas cards are hand written and personalized to the sender
We don't have an automatic dishwasher or garbage disposer, so we HAVE to compost....and that's way alright
I keep a stash of quarters to make calls via public phone if I need to reach my spouse, so we STILL don't have a cell
of course, I can all our jams and jellies and tomatoes if it's been a good tomato season
We get our beef and pork each year from friends
If we didn't live on a dirt road, I'd line dry everything
I still believe in disciplining children via spanks, manners toward adults and whenever possible, home raising kids rather than daycare (a very rare bird these days)
Family vacations
hand written TIMELY thank yous

We live in a one room cabin, and I love to wear Pioneer clothing. I don't wear it to the store or to the kids schools, they would die of embarrassment..lol But after reading this, I can do a lot better at so many things.
We heat with wood Use candles and lanterns a lot Hand make all our gifts Produce most of our own food, eggs, butter, etc My husband is a retired physician and I am an Herbalist, so we put our minds together to heal I have a wonderful Kefer plant that keeps us healthyish I have a weakness for my computer though.
Gratefully living on the "fat of the land". |

I would love the simplicity of a one room cabin! I do not miss my house when we camp. I could live in tight quarters. |

Some things I grew up doing that just seem normal to me- Wash dishes by hand Scrub floors the good old fashioned way, BY HAND. They get the cleanest that way. Grow a garden Hang out clothes (who doesnt love the crispness and smell of the country on thier linens and clothes) SEW and scrapbook Heat with wood
We are thinking about transforming an little old grain bin into a one room guest cabin. Repurposing is old fashioned, right?

Being a newbie here, and finding this thread...now I KNOW I'm in the right place! We:
live in a multi-generational household (two families together in one home; both saving for a farm!!) wash dishes by hand homemade laundry soap/vinegar fabric softener/hang to dry bake/cook 99.9% from scratch (also homemade mixes - pancakes, hot cocoa, spice mixes, etc.) menu plans, leftovers...stretch those meals, and stretch them some more! garden, garden, and yes, garden ;) can, dry, and freeze meat is local farm or what we hunt (we mostly live on vension). homeschool no vaccinations heat with wood from our backwoods raw milk from local farm pets on raw food diet essential oils/herbs/etc. as medicine first, then doctor if needed compost trade/barter/freecycle/thrift store hubby takes lunch to work home haircuts (Except for hubby who works outside home...) we do not shower everyday, nor do we put on a new outfit everyday - unless it is needed!! My boys, at ages 6 and 7, are well schooled in the use of handtools and BB guns.
It sure is nice to find a place where I don't feel like "the only one"! I was starting to get a complex!!

I feel slightly out of my league among many of you farm girls. I breastfeed all 5 of my children. I homeschool, if that is old fashioned. I make bread, can tomatos, we have chickens and rabbits for meat and eggs. I made a dress for my 4 year old out of an old shirt from one of my older boys. I don't have a garden because we live near a huge u-pick. Oh, I hang my clothes!! Growing wheat and making grain is very impressive!!! Michelle

Hey! I think making a dress out of an old shirt is fantastic!! Wish I could do that... I bet if you sat and thought about "old fashioned" things you do, there's probably more than you realize. Things can be so ordinary to you that you don't realize the great things you are doing :)

Ok, Channah, I have see you around the farmgirl connection. You are a very accomplished Channah I have seen you around the website, and you are a very accomplished Farmgirl! I forgot! We burn wood. Our fireplace is on a vent system. Our electric company actually questioned me about why it was so low. The dress out a shirt was easy. I used the back and the two front panels, plus I didn't have to hem! this website has really validated me at a time when I really needed it! My husband thinks it's a cult the way we strive to do it the old fashion way. He thinks civil war reenacters are a cult so I feel we are in good company!! (LOL) thanks everyone

I have found this entire website extremely validating. I don't have many friends where I live, and certainly none who are "farmgirls" so this fits the bill. I have been more content lately knowing others are doing the same thing.

I wish that we all lived near each other so that we could walk down meandering paths to one another's homes and have tea and share garden seeds and quilt together. I love you all dearly though I have never met any of you, because you love the things that are closet to my heart!!
I grew up in love with the Laura Ingalls Wilder stories and have always desired the pioneer life. I have made pioneer dresses with my daughters and we enjoy dressing up in them. Every so often I host a get together for my daughter's and their friends so that I can teach them the delicate arts of homemaking. So many young girls do not know how to do any of these things!
I didn't see anyone mention that they sew on a treadle. I have one that I use. I also have a hand mill for grinding grain and cutting up veggies. I don't use the dishwasher or clothes dryer either...too costly to run although my family members think I'm nuts!
The one thing I wish I did more of is walking places. Sometimes I wish I HAD to walk so that I would. Jumping in the car is too easy and it does save time, so I always justify it. But....I do wish I walked more.
Blessings to you all, my Farmgirl Sisters!

I would love to walk more but my little farm is on a main county highway! 4 dogs have met their fate on the road!! It would be nice though. My son did some research into the dishwasher thing. He was desperate to use the dishwasher and I told him he had to prove it was cost efficient. He said that according to some energy star rating that it was more water efficient than doing it the old fashioned way! I let him use the dishwasher but the dryer is OFF LIMITS! I thought of another old fashioned thing I do, use cloth napkins instead of paper, and I don't use Swiffers.! I would like to ride a horse into town instead of my SUV!
