Channah, I think you are terrific, girl! Keep doing what you're doing.

I hang all our clothes out on the line to dry. I cannot stand the thought of using the dryer. So I wait for nice days to wash. I did 3 loads today and hung them out. I was so excited. Also use my own homemade washing liquid and use lavender scented vinegar for the rinse. too.

I am making soap now. Also sew a lot by hand. Hand quilt. Can everything I grow. Raise our own meat. Milk goats by hand. Lots of times we let the goats mow the grass for us. And make bread.

Kris

1. Sending hand-written thank you notes. (I'm always appalled when I get an impersonal, emailed thank you!)
2. Saying yes sir/ma'am and no sir/ma'am. (Major big deal where I live.)
3. Bake bread.
4. Give handmade gifts.
5. Get to know our neighbors.
6. I wear a kerchief and apron around the house.
7. Own a rotary dial phone. (Aqua blue Model 301 Western Electric, thank you very much.)

I write letters
grow my garden
keep the hens
fix all our meals by "scratch"
iron our clothes
make hubby's lunch every day
bake bread
wear that apron daily
most importantly, I am grateful for all i have. I don't always notice people are happy with what they have, seems like they are always looking for more!

Forget buns of steel, I'd rather have buns of cinnamon!

Wow, I'm embarrassed. I did breast feed my one child. I do grow okra, onion tops, parsley and cut and freeze it for cooking. I'm working on other things.
Channah: I am so proud of you for doing all you do. I bet you could run circles around me; but I would try to keep up with you.

I have used cloth diapers on all three of my sons.
I also breastfeed my children.
I don't vaccinate my children.
I make my own laundry detergent.
My family drinks raw milk from a local Amish family.
I make my own yogurt and slow cooked steel-cut oats for breakfast.
I make my own non-toxic cleaners at home (vinegar is a great thing!)
I'm a knitting fool LOL (I knit wool diaper covers for my kids)!
I look forward to learning more old fashioned ways here :)

I raise about 3/4 of what we eat and do mega canning & freezing. I have always made bread. I make soap. I spin wool from my sheep & make my own socks, mittens, hats & sweaters. I sew just about all the clothes I wear. I also breast fed my kids (at that time it wasn't mainstream to do so and my mom thought I was nuts. You had to tell them at the hospital that you were going to or they would automatically give you a shot to dry up your milk). We built this house out of logs from this land that we cut and peeled along with lumber gleaned from a barn that we tore down in Oaksdale and hauled up here (a dusty proposition post Mt. St. Helens). I hand dug the drain field for the grey water system - 2 ditches 100 ft. long and four feet deep by myself while my husband was at work. I also dug the outhouse pit one day - also while he was at work. We lived without indoor plumbing for 3 years while we were building around ourselves. We never had a mortgage on building the house just built as we could afford. I truly feel like I had the whole homestead experience and I wouldn't trade the days of an outhouse at 20 below zero and a freshly skunked dog for anything.

Blessings, Sheri

Hey Farmgirls!!

Deborah, you can grow wheat where ever you want and you don't have to worry about how much space you need.. Know what I mean?

Victoria, We grew Winter Wheat! It made so very yummy bread!!

Marly, I don't think so. I bet you could run circles around me and I would have to keep up. :) And Please don't be embarrassed. :) Thank you so much for all your complements!! It really means a lot!!!
Hugs,
Channah

Oh gosh, I forgot about breastfeeding! It's so natural to me that it doesn't seem old-fashioned. I also quilt but only by machine.

I do a lot of the same things y'all do. Farmgirls are so great!

Something not mentioned yet...
percolate coffee on the stove instead of using a coffee machine
make popcorn in a big pot on the stove instead of the microwave kind
use my mom's and my grandmother's iron skillets that I will pass down to my girls
cut my husband's hair and then throw it out for the birds to use in nests
make things with my girls for their hope chests (my oldest has my mom's and my youngest has mine)

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."

Hey Yart....silly question, but I've always wondered how people dry their clothes outside during the winter up here in MI. Or do you dry them all inside? If so, what kinda inside system do you have set up to dry all your clothes? I'm new to the north (grew up in Virginia and Florida) and only moved here a couple of years ago, so I'm still learning the northern ways of doing things.

Deborah, I'm no hero, lol, But thanks, and you need to be yourself, which is best for you, and what God intended. Everything you want, you will get with down and dirty work, everything you need, you will provde to yourself with time. Anything you dream about, hard enough, and with total passion, will become.

I don't think of it as old fashioned, just the way I do things--by reason of preference, or because it's the only way to get things done.

We wash dishes by hand (we have a baby--bottles CAN be done without a dishwasher!!!)

Iron
knit
hand sew most things
cut my dh's hair
write letters
have a rag bag
wear aprons
make corn bread in a cast iron skillet
pop corn on the stove
read an actual newspaper instead of online editions
write letters, cards, buy stamps instead of emails
Use checks
Make pie crusts, cakes and almost all meals from scratch
grow my own vegetables (use a lot of my Great Grandfather's--who died in 1965)rules of thumb about our region/planting guidelines
can/preserve
save bacon grease
take food to neighbors/friends when ill or death in family (somewhat unheard of in these suburban areas any more)

Siobhan, I have clothes lines in the basement for winter and bad weather. If I didn't I would never get the laundry done. I also have a line outside for when it is warm.
