Hi, does anyone know at what point can you embroider on something you are felting such as a hand knit purse. Do you embroider after felting? Or does it matter. I have read both ways, but I can't imagine even being able to do it before felting. Thanks for your help.

Hey Mikki, I don't think I have the definitive answer, but I've only ever embroidered after felting--I THINK you can embroider before but in some cases, you get alot of fuzz and depending on what type of thread you use to embroider, felting can damage it. However, I'm not 100% sure on that final statement. Would love to hear more about this from others!

IMHO it is best to embroider after felting. Since the fibers become more compact with felting, the process will distort your embroidery pattern at the very least. Also, since most felting requires several washings in HOT water, the embroidery thread may be damaged or the colors altered.
Would be interested in hearing what other crafters have encountered.

Thanks very much. That's how I felt (no pun intended) lol about it too. I had read somewhere that embroidering before gave the design more dimension. I can understand that but I just don't see the finished product turning out. I'll stick with after felting. Thanks again!
