For three years I struggled to work and to care for my husband. They had said that he would finally be entirely bed ridden and that I might come home from work one day and find him dead. We prayed and the entire church was praying that he be completely healed. That didn't happen and he was not confined to his bed. He got a belly button hernia and he died within 2 weeks time. It was hard and prayer was answered in a manner in which I did not wish, but he was a viable human who only had to take short naps during the day before he died. He recovered from a seizure that they thought would leave him with diminished capacity. God is always there. We cannot see all as He can. May He bless you richly but I can see that He has placed a huge big heart in you.

My praying farmgirl friends, I wish I could say things are better . . . some days are better than others. But it just seems like it's pretty much status quo.
Sister engages in SO MUCH involuntary, repetitious, annoying physical activity! It's crazy!!! She cries out a lot . . .in a variety of ways. I have to be very creative in ways to help diffuse or distract so that there is some peace.
Today she got frustrated with some work in cognition skills and smacked me in the face . . hard. Just have to buck up, recover and move on!
Her hubby continues to spend HOURS and HOURS doing ENDLESS internet research . . looking for whatever it is that he thinks will be the miracle fix. I understand his desire to help her . . . but he's not being realistic, and sometimes what he is looking into doing is rather scary.
It's all about FAMILY . . . and LOVE!!!!!
THANKS FOR YOUR PRAYERS and ENCOURAGEMENTS!! CJ

CJ... Is your sister under the care of a competent doctor? Head injuries are very difficult to manage. When the patient has been treated and evaluated over a period of time a plan of care is initiated. These patients come to a point where the recovery is to a point where they will no longer continue to progress and the deficites they have is what is treated and managed. It sounds as if her prognosis is just that. At that point treatment to keep the patient safe, nonviolent and comfotable is the goal. I have dealt with many such cases and these poor patients can become so frustrated and verbally and physically abusive that the main goal is their safety. They can not control these behaviors because of the disconnections in their brains. It sounds as though your sister fits this scenario. I for one do not advocate for medications unless the patient needs them to promote a calmness and give them a better life. Imagine being in their shoes and incapable of expressing your needs and desires in a proper way. So sad. Your job is a very trying and difficult task, as well as exhausting. Your sister is lucky to have you. Your BIL is unrealistic and you won't be able to do much about it but love your sister. God gives you the strenghth and goodness to provide your sisters care. Unless you are a caregiver, you can never know how much we caregivers do. God Bless all of us and the patients we lovingly devote our lives to. You are always in my prayers as well as your sister, for I know your burdens. Remember to take care of yourself, (we never do) because no one else will. Thank God we have Him to lean on! Amen!
Blessings and Peace, Darlene Sister 1922

Dearest CeeJay, Good thoughts and blessings coming your way. Have you exhausted all Social Services has to offer at your local hospital? She seems to be so ill I would think her primary physican could arrange for Home Health to give you all a hand in her care. Hugs and prayers, Geranium Lady

Is there such a thing as Passport in CO? Here in Ohio you can get help for several hours a day. It's run by Medicaid and the Area Agency for Aging. You can also get help with respite care. If disabled and on Medicare, there should be some help available for home health aides. I'm praying for you. It's hard to hold up. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and take care of yourself so you can do for her and your husband. Take advantage of any available help. |

Thanks girls . . . .the upshot is this. She's got it all, an entire entourage of medical specialists, care providers, therapists, programs, government assistance, everything . . . EXCEPT the miracle that will restore her to the person she was before the brain injury.
STRIVING for the miracle is not reality and it consumes the energy needed to live in the reality . . . and hang on to the hope. BIL's striving is "eating him up" . . . and it gets the focus off of helping her in the daily, moment by moment need for reality. It is because I have HOPE that I do what I do, but I also believe I have a grip on reality . . . BIL doesn't. I also believe that God is "in charge".
'Tis a fine line . . . that line between living in reality with hope . . . and striving for the miracle.

CJ I am sure your brother in law ran across Dr. Amen on line. I have heard many good things about him. It might be possible that he could do something for your sister. Anyway here is a link in case your BIL might have missed it. http://www.amenclinics.com/

Yes, it is her birthday today, September 2nd. She has been ABSOLUTELY SHOWERED with birthday gifts, cards and blessings . . . and she is not able to comprehend the full scope and magnitude of any of it!!!
Got her up, showered and dressed in a new birthday outfit . . she looks beautiful!! She is still "wailing and flailing" . . .
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR SISTER!!!! CJ

CJ, I hope she has a good day today. I've been reading your posts about your sister but I don't think I have commented. She has got to be the most loved lady ever. It's so good that you are there with her. Even though she may not know what's going on or remember a thing, she can still feel love. And that makes such a big difference. I have no idea what you are going through with her, but you are a very good sister. I'm sure there is a huge crown waiting for you.
