Has anyone done rag curls on short hair? I would like a curly do every once in a while but hate the curling iron. I have wavy hair to begin with and I usually flat iron just the bangs.

Hi outthere, just sign on and got the rag curl buz. My hair also is very fine and very straight so I have braided or pin curled just to get some curls but never have tried the rags. It is true if you brush it frizes so finger combing is a better idea. Thanks for a new idea.

I have used both rag curlers and spoolies. We had Pink and seafoam green ones. Yes, Vermont Country Store does sell spoolies. We used the rag and spoolies when I was little. Then when I was in High School we wanted straight hair and didn't have straighteners or curling Irons so we used concentrated orange juice cans on the top and then wrapped our hair around our heads and scotch taped it to our heads to sleep. Anyone else remember that?

I tied my hair up in cotton rag strips one time for halloween. My hair was dry when I tied it up. I didn't put get, mousse, hairspray or anything on my hair. Three hours later, when the halloween gig was over, I untied my hair, and much to my surprise, I had the most beautiful curls in the world. I love rag rollers.

My hair it stick straight, The bond in my hair is so strong, perms have trouble taking. I'm for sure going to try this with the rag rollers. My hair is short and straight, will be fun seeing if I can get the curl. Don't like using the curling iron. And Yes Hannah, I do remember using spoolie's. You had to really practice to get them on right. Will be back to let you know if I get any curls. Hugs,Brenda

I love using rag curlers! Such fun=)
My hair is down past my waist, so getting curlers in can be tricky.
I wanted to share these resources I found that demonstrate how to get curls and waves the old-fashioned way!

http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2009/09/24/bandana-waves/

Of course, they would work great on much shorter hair, as well;)

I tried this last night, and I don't think I have the right kind of hair for them! I used them on wet hair, twisted, and tied then slept on them and took them out in the morning. I was careful not to brush my hair, but just with separating the curls into smaller sections and finger combing it a little to get some tangles out I looked like Janis Joplin. (not that there's anything wrong with that, but it definitley wasn't the look I was going for!) I pinned it back on the sides and put it in a loose ponytail for the day. It has calmed down a little, but is still really poofy.

Sherri, mine is super curly the first day too. I either put it up, or pin back the front, because the next day I have MOST FABULOUS waves!!! Actually like day two the best. I brushed it the first day one time, and it was so frizzy I had no choice but to put on giant hoop earrings and a caftan and just go with it. But you can tame it down by lightly misting it, but don't touch it, or it will go flat.

Ok, I'll see how it goes tomorrow ;) I don't think I have to worry about it going flat though, it's still about 4 times poofier than my hair normally is ;) I think maybe next time I'll get some anti-frizz spray or something. My hair frizzes at the slightest change, so maybe my normal after shower anti-frizz stuff wasn't enough!

I agree that the second day is the best after using rag rollers on my 8 year olds long hair after reading this post. The lush waves that second day were just lovely.

This has nothing to do with rag curlers but I just had to tell you ladies this story. When we were teenagers in the late 1960's - early 1970's by sister would use frozen juice containers to roll her hair at night because her hair was so thick and curly and she wanted it straighter. Well it did work, but I never understood how should could possibly sleep night after night with those things in her head. lol!

Lately I have been too lazy for individual rag curls, so I tried this sock method. Way cool! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FV-YO46E8Y&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Checking in again...after, like, a year! So, originally I tried denim strips, which didn't really work...my hair didn't dry, which means it didn't stay curled. Someone recommended flannel but I didn't have any of that around. BUT, I did have old sheets that were T-shirt material. I cut a whole bunch of strips to use, and that worked better than denim but a lot of times my hair would still be damp. Maybe I was just rolling too much at once or something. Anyway, until last week, it's been forever since I tried the rag curlers. My hair is layered and I ALWAYS use a curling iron before I go out anywhere, just to turn my ends under. Well, that curl never stays in my hair, either. A couple hours after I curl it, it's pretty much all the way flat again...especially if it's humid. So, one evening last week, my hair was DRY (not wet or damp AT ALL) and I just put it up in rag curlers. I don't know why I tried it even, BUT IT WORKED! My hair was nice and curly the next day...and stayed ALL DAY LONG! It was still curly the next evening! Needless to day, I did it a couple more times that week and figured out how to curl it all evenly so it was all curled the same amount. Usually the first day after I curl it, I put it halfway up, sorta, nice and poofy, which is different for me...usually it's flat and straight and thin looking. I can't tell you how happy and excited I was when I met my guy at the door on his next visit (last Saturday) and the first thing he said when he saw me was "Oh, I love your hair like that!!!" Yay!!!

So anyway, for me and my hair, curling dry hair with rag curlers (who knew??!! I sure didn't!) works best and holds longest. Wild!
