Oh, Kris! I have got to fix those photos that I took when I came and mail you a disc! I went through them all and picked my favorites. Kansas is so photogenic! Her sweet and spunky personality just shines through those photos. I know that she will make fast friends at school and have so much fun. She will come home bursting with news and things to share with y'all. LOL about the woman wanting to come take photos. Does everyone's garden go downhill by this time? I've seen many along the road simply overgrown. Mine is so leggy and out of control. I just want to rip it all out, but there are still tomatoes. So I'm waiting.

Lovin' Man wanted to take that wall down before Nick even left, so I have been angry with him for quite a while. I'm just consoling myself with the knowledge that we will see Nick when he graduates, but it will never be the same again.

Kris, your gonna miss Kansas' pitter patter since school has started, I know I will miss Abby's. I am going to miss hearing her having conversations with her dolls, and stuffed animals. She is going to be so worn out when she gets home, and I bet cranky. I know she will adjust though. Anyway to funny about the pictures, I tilled 1/2 of my garden because I couldn't stand the leggy and droopy zucs. We planted pumpkins in their place. I hope they do well, I have never grown pumpkins before, I think the kids will like seeing them grow. I went school shopping this am since it is our tax free holiday, I got some really good deals with sales and coupons. I am glad I waited to use the coupons when I did.
Nikki, I bet it is so hard letting go of your oldest, I dread the day mine drives out of the driveway, even if its to go get milk! Mine is 15 and drifting away already.
Cherry good luck with moving all that gym equip. Your gonna need a spare bedroom when we all come down and stay with ya!HAHA!
Have a GREAT Friday!

Ya'll should have seen what Kansas wore for her first day of school. I didn't see her this morning when they left. But when she got out of the car she had on the bright pink furry Hannah Montanna boots my mom got her with a pink flowery shirt and pink shorts! Oh my goodness, it was too funny! She's gonna be the goofy oodball kid now for sure. The other day at the market there was one of the vendors 14 year old DD wearing these bright neon orange high top tennies with lime green and black cheched long pants with a white tank top and a big ole loose black belt. And her nails were orange, too. Plus a bright orange beaded necklace. I couldn't help but see her. And I thought that 2 of my grands will be dressing like that. But what is so funny is that my girls dressed like that in the '80's. What goes around comes around again. But she had a good day at school.

Kelly, I hope Abby had a good day. She's in 1st, too?

I can't wait to see the pictures, Nikki. She is very photogenic. I am not at all. I hate my picture taken. In fact, the one you posted here I look like a Sumo wrestler. Why? So I try not to be in the way of a camera. No one will remember me when I'm gone cuz there will be no pictures of me.

I bet Cherry's gonna be taking a nap on her bed in the nice clean new spare bedroom she's been working on.

No way! I guess I haven't been in clothing stores in a long time. I'll have to go now just to see that. The 14 year old said she got her clothes from the mall and she said the name but I haven't been to the mall in so long.

That is amazing and scary at the same time.

LOL, Kris, you DID NOT look like a sumo wrestler! I got some good photos of you on the sly while you were occupied with the goats. You will see! - Oh no, Kansas will be the girl who makes friends with everyone and the one confident enough to start the fashion trends. Seriously. She's full of chutzpah! - Ugh. If you have a store called Justice for Girls, you will see that they have clothes exactly like what we had when I was in the sixth grade, so stuff that people were wearing about 25 years ago. I DO NOT want my child to dress like she is desperately seeking Susan!

Kelly, I know how you feel about your fifteen-year-old driving. Does he like to hang out with you? Will he go places with you? I did try very hard to get Nick to do things with us, but he did not like doing anything that we like. He hates the beach, he hates skiing, he hates the farm, he hates riding bikes. I remember that I totally hated going anywhere with my parents after I was about 14 or 15, but they would force me to go anyway and then I would make them wish that I was never born. HA! He only seems to be happy when he has his laptop with him. Is that the way your son is? Now I find myself questioning whether I did the right thing. I thought that I was respecting him and showing him love by giving him the choice to do things with us, but now I wonder if he thought that I didn't care enough to make him do things. I did try to get him to tell us what he wanted to do and we would have done that, but he couldn't think of any place that he wanted to go or anything that he wanted to do. It was just all about that dang computer. He will most certainly be happy in the Air Force because he will be working with computers! LOL. All that to say, cherish every moment that your 15-year-old will give you. - Oh, Abby will have fun at school. She is able to make fast friends! - Pumpkins! That is the first that I have heard of them this season and all a sudden I have a tiny bit of a longing for fall colors and cute sweaters. Strange since I have recently been scheming about extending summer all year long since I love the season so much! LOL!

Alee, I KNOW. Everything is florescent pink, yellow, turquoise. Then there are the black and blue stripes. And the black and blue animals prints. The fingerless gloves. I will NOT go there. I won't. What's next? Crimped hair in a side ponytail???? I will be shopping at the thrift store for normal girl clothes until this craziness passes. I promise you. Jeans and t-shirts, baby!

I want to plants pumpkins! I want to have a "great pumpkin" patch. Wouldn't it be cool to grow a super-duper big one? I've heard that it has something to do with milk. That is weird. Like you feed it to them or something. Got to check that out!

Cherry, I hope you haven't pulled your back while moving that gym equipment! Be careful!

OMG, the side ponies all crimped!! Another thing my kids did. No, they can't be doing that again! Please.

I planted pumpkins last year when the package said to in May. I had pumpkins in July. At the market this morning a guy had some little ones. I saw a kid walk by holing it. If you plant now you should have some by at least Oct.

I sold out at the market! I got there early and set up and by 10 I was sold out! I had only beans and oeas, too. It was hot. I am always right in the sun in the mornings. I have to pick all the okra I can for a lady at church for tomorrow. I won't have to pick til next week after that. My beans are about gone, thank goodness. I should plant some more but dog gone, I don't wanna. I have got to get my fall garden started. I want greens and collards bad. And cabbage and brussel sprouts, too. Maybe lettuce and spinach if I can get my raised beds cleaned out.

Ya'll, I whacked poor ole stupid white guinea last night right on the head. Ping! And I just tossed the stick his way not ever dreaming I'd hit the darn thing, much less knock him senseless. I mean he was knocked senseless, too. He sat down for a few minutes and tried to get up and wobbled a little. I thought the other guineas were going to finish him off. They all gathered round him to see what was wrong and if he would get up. It was kind of funny in a way. But I was really worried there for a few minutes. But not long after he was back to his nutty crazy old self again. Doing what he does best, and that's being a bully. I really never thought I'd ever come close to hitting him. I just wanted to run him off so the poor little chickens could eat a few bites in peace.

Anyway, I'm taking a break for awhile and thought I'd check in and say hello to everyone. I have got to clean this house. I will but later. I can't stand to see it in such a mess.

Oh, Kris! You SHOULD let that girl come out and take photos of your garden when you get your pumpkins, greens and collards in! It would be so pretty with the mountain in the background and the fall colors. I love all of the containers that you have with flowers growing in them. Do the apple tree's leaves change colors? Sad that I don't know that.

I'm so glad that you sold out! It sounds like you are the most popular farmer at the market! A friend of mine gave me some okra the other day and we had it boiled and salted. YUM!!! That is one of our favorite ways to eat it. All slimy goodness! Have you ever made okra pickles? We haven't made them ourselves, but my aunt introduced them to us last year and now we would rather have those than cucumber pickles!

EEWWW! Slimy boiled okra. I can't even go there! I have a very bad memory about boiled okra. My grandma always had fried okra at Thanksgiving. Always. It was my very favorite thing. I'd always be in the kitchen when she was frying it and I'd sneak a few and she'd smack my hand. Such a fun memory. Well, one year that woman BOILED the okra. Need I say more? Except that just ruined Thanksgiving for me.

And about selling out. I just don't have truckloads like some of the venders do. I take what I have and that's it. One time I had one lone basket of beans for over an hour. Someone finally bought it. I do have people that love my beans and peas, though. I went around this morning after I had set up and there are some humongous field peas some of them grow. I mean one of theres is like 3 of mine. I would have thought people would want mega big for the money but they'd come over and buy mine. I tell them mine are all natural grown with no chemicals or pesticides. There's a little old guy named Homer that I was next to this morning and he was not happy about a lady saving a place for one of the venders. SO he had to get in a different spot. But he sold his stuff. He said he was glad I sold all mine so now he could sell his. He's too funny. Anyway he gave me a bean that's over 100 years old for the seeds! I can't remember the name, something like a field bean or something. I'll think of it soon.

And yes I made lots of okra pickles last year. I love them. I put a hot pepper in the middle. Once my hubby grabbed what he thought was an okra and started eating it and it was the pepper!

And no, apple leaves do NOT turn colors unless it's like a brownish-yellow ugly before they fall off. But not a pretty fall leaf color.

I came up with this idea to have a fall harvest vender (is this how to spell vender? or maybe vendor? It just doesn't look right) dinner and we each bring a dish of something we have grown ourselves. The manager wants recipes so we could all write out the recipe for her to put in a book. And there would be a contest for the best of each catagory like main course and salad and desert. I went around and asked all the venders there and they all said they'e love to come. I think it would be so fun. One lady was already thinking what to make. She said she loves contests.

LOL that you don't like boiled okra! I guess there probably aren't too many that do, but that was a quick snack that my grandmother used to make me and I just revel in its uniqueness. Nothing else like THAT! - Oh, I'm glad that you turn them into pickles and I like the hot ones with a kick, as well.

That fall harvest vendor dinner is such a good idea! Y'all will have so much fun and gather lots of great recipes! One of the market gardeners around here gives out recipes with his more exotic foods. I think I bought some sort of turban squash from him. Anyway, that is a neat way to encourage people to try new stuff!

Oh Nikki! I hope you are feeling better! Nick is a brave young man to take this course and to me, that means you did a great job! Parents and children will always have their differences, but in the end the only thing we can do is do our best. And I am sure that is exactly what you did!

quote:
[i]

I haven't checked my emails in a few days. I feel like I am going through the stages of grief. What is so bad is not being able to talk to him and find out how he is. You just take it for granted in this communication age that you can talk to anyone at any time, and now I am totally cut off. This has never happened before and it is huge. He left things of his that he wanted his friends to have, packed up his stuff in boxes and Lovin' Man is already tearing a wall out in the basement and making plans to make a den with a pool table. When he does that it will be like Nick was never even here.

But life has to go on, even when you feel like it can't. What tears me up is thinking about all of the things that I could have done better. I just want to encourage all parents and grandparents to be mindful that they grown up so fast.

Oh and Nikki- I was the same was as Nick as a kid. Once we had computers and internet, I was on there as often as I could be. My parents would ask where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do, but I wanted to be on my computer more than anything. My first year away from home I missed my parents, but it was still an adventure to be away- you know? Well after that I started calling my parents more and more. Now I consider my parents two of my friends. My mom and I are VERY close.

My parents moved from the house where I grew up- So talk about things chaning! It was hard on me when they moved, but now I actually like the new house better! Things will be different, but Nick will get to send you letters and once he is granted computer priviledges you can keep up using Facebook and such. *hugs*

Hellllooooooo out there!! It's so quiet out there. I hope all is well with everyone. Maybe Cherry got lost in her spare room. Oh no! Or she's engrossed in her novel. How exiting! And Kelly is canning up a storm and just can't stop. And Nikki. I hope she's staying busy. Alee must be riding. Or maybe catching up on her sleep. That sounds like a good idea.

I have been busy but not in the garden. I have been putting up chicken wire in the rooster hotel. I have 7 roos too many and they are wreeking havoc on a few of the poor hens. So I have decided to pen them up and fatten them up for a fall harvest. They have a nice big area but will not be able to get out. It's 10'x10' with roosts and food and water. So they will be fine. But out of the way for awhile. I got all but one in there tonight. I think I may keep the BR roo out just because I have 8 BR hens now. So Jimmy Buffet might need some help.

Then I put up a few strands of barbed wire out in the goat yard to try and keep Sadie Mae in. Her milk is horribly awful lately. She's the only one with nasty milk and I think it's because she's in the field all day. So I hope the wire will keep her from jumping over. I'll see tomorrow if it works. I sure hate that wire. I was in the chicken yard yesterday and was falling backward against the fence and reached out to hold on and grabbed the top of the fence and it's barbed wire. Ouch! That hurted. I cut some fingers on my right hand and got my arm, too. Then one of the roos cut the back of my left hand. Big ole cut right across the top. But that's not unusual for me to be all cut up.

I am just a ramblin' on here. I am going to bed now.

Hi Kris!

I have been busy doing my part time job cashiering at a local grocery store. Oh my word! I can not believe the JUNK people are buying and feeding to their kids! I actually really like my job except when I see parents being wretched to their kids or when I see kids that are obviously suffering for good food. It's sad seeing a 5 year old huffing out of breath after walking just a short distance and being obviously morbidly obese. I wish I had the discretion to not sell things to people, but alas I don't and I go home with stronger convictions to be the best mom possible and feed my daughter good, wholesome food and fill our days with good exercise!

Oh, Alee! Thanks for the words of encouragement! You and Nick were like two peas in a pod then, LOL, about not wanted to be separated from your computers! - Nick got to call me and he didn't have long but he wanted me to make sure to tell everyone how much he missed them and loved them. So I know his situation is making him appreciate his family and friends. Nothing like be mistreated to put what you left behind into greater perspective and make you remember it with fondness!

Alee, I got my new MaryJane's Farm magazine yesterday and I saw lots of comments in it from you! That was so neat. Dontcha just love seeing your name in print? I'm glad that you were in there. I love reading that magazine. It is the first of its kind since I actually do feel like a part of the community of it.

Kris, I think that Cherry may be sick. I saw something about it on Facebook. I couldn't help teasing her and said that it might be bad karma from moving the exercise equipment out of the spare room. You know that sort of thing just isn't done! - I'm sorry that you got all cut up! Doesn't that always just seem to be the way? My hands are always banged up too. Makes me think of Scarlett crying about her hands and how you can always tell a lady by her hands. Welp, I guess I ain't no lady, but I sure do have fun!

I get such a kick out of you talking about Jimmy Buffet! He is too cute. I tried to burn you a disc of those photos the other day and I couldn't make my new computer do it. My brother, the computer guru, will be coming out this afternoon to fix it, so YAY!

I have tons of tomatoes on my plants now. Maybe enough to brave a canning session. I will let y'all know how that goes! Scary!

Alee, that is so sad. I think it's just plain ole ignorance. People think they can't afford really good food because it costs too much. Well, if they wouldn't buy all the crap, they could afford it. What I hate to see at the grocery stores is really big people with buggies loaded down with processed food and bags of chips and boxes of sodas. And ya just gotta wonder how they got that way. Too sad. Oh, and I really think it boils down to these parents who tell their kids they probably won't like it. And they probably will never like good food then. Because kids will eat what their parents like and fix and eat.

Our farmer's market takes food stamp tokens now! And just a few weeks ago they made them double the money. So they can spend less and get more. And we get the full value when we cash the tokens in. I also read somewhere where WIC vouchers can be used now for fresh produce. They are really trying to get the word out to people who use food stamps and WIC. I think that's great. Ant the DFACS building is right in front of the market, too.

Nikki, don't you just love to get the magazine and see people ya know in it? I love it. I have been in it a few times, too. So fun to get it and look to see who all's in there. You could be in there, too, someday. I hope Cherry gets well soon. I miss seeing her here. And don't worry about that disc. I can wait.

Thanks Nikki! Yes, it's fun to see when something I posted is put into the magazine.

Kristin- each state is different. Here in Montana organic and farmer's market is not permitted by WIC and you can buy ANYTHING that is food (Including chips, gum and soda UGH) with foodstamps, but their foodstamps are now on a debit card so unless you have a specially programmed little card reader that understands the food stamps program, I don't know how they would be able to use the foods stamps at the farmer's market. I am glad that your area is better about the program!

Alee, I don't understand how it all works, but they have a machine for the FS and they get wooden tokens they use as money. We, the vendors, just cash them in to the manager of the market at the end of that day. We have to sign 2 papers, too. Haven't seen the WIC here yet but hope to soon. This is such a great way to get people to eat right and get fresh local food and support us, too. Otherwise, they would just go elsewhere. And we all know where that is. But I have gotten several tokens this year. So I know it's working here. Just need more exposure and word of mouth.

Hey ya'll, I wish I have been canning! Nothing to harvest right now except peppers, I have been freezing them, I do want to figure out how to can some jalepenos though. Any way I have been busy this weekend, not really doing much but just away from the computer.
Nikki, Justin is a computer/gamer. He did play sports until he injured his heel. Now he golfs. But anyway he doesn't like hanging out with us as a family much, but will go out to eat and he had fun on vacation. We are pretty close, so I feel we are connected. The kids start school tomorrow. I'm happy and a little sad, I will be lonely. But that does give me a little extra time to get busy on Farmgirl stuff.
Cherry, I hope your not sick! Maybe its from unsettling dust out of the spareroom! HA!
Alee, I know how you feel with poeople feeding their kids junk, I wish I didn't fall into that category, but Abby loves chips! She will eat them for breakfast if I'd let her. I keep them in the house as a special snack.
Kris I hope your goat milk starts tasting better. And I'm so glad to hear of your success at the market, and the dinner sounds like a great idea!

Kelly- I think it is one thing to have treats as special snacks, but when they bring up two full cart loads and all the cereal is sugar coated-marshmallow filled junk, when all the juice is the kind that is only like 1% juice, they have about 20 boxes of Little Debbie twinkies, jelly rolls, etc etc, 10 cases of pop, a month's worth of frozen dinners... you get the idea. It just makes me sad to think that everything that some kids eat comes out of a box, or a package or whatever and the most that their stove gets used for is to heat up the packaged dinners. *sigh* I am so glad my mom raised us on homemade food!

Hello, ladies! I'm still alive but not kickin' too high and a bit woozy from my wonderful Rx. So if I start typing crazy, you'll understand why. It's the darndest thing. I was pretty sure I had the flu. EVERYthing hurt, but my head and throat worst of all. I've had actually diagnosed flu twice and this is real close. But my doc said it's not. He said it's a viral bacteria strain he's been seeing recently that is similar to both mono and strep. He said that all of the "normal" strains of common illness' are beginning to mutate and alot of their testing methods are becoming outdated, like the strep test. All I know is it feels like I have brillo pads packed in my throat and my head is so touchy-painful I can't bear the thought of even washing my hair. And I have no energy whatsoever. Doc said I should be feeling better by tomorrow and he better be right! Ugh! I hate this!

Nikki, I am so happy Nick was able to call you. I know that was so very reassuring for you. And you're right about our appreciation! We usually don't feel it or express it when the opportunity is right there in front of us. He's gonna develop a whole new appreciation for a lot of things! And you probably won't believe me, but I absolutely love boiled okra! Mama'd fix it a couple of times a week during the summer, sometimes by itself, but usually she'd cook it in the field peas and we'd eat it spooned over cornbread. Yum! But Brian and La won't touch it because of the slime factor! BUT, La loves pickled okra. Go figure.

Kris, I think the vendor dinner and competition is wonderful! And I love that people can use their FS at the market. You and Alee are so right about these people overdoing it with the junk food. We don't eat nearly as healthily as we should, but when you're in the grocery and you see people who are so overweight and all they have in their buggy is junk, you have a difficult time feeling any sympathy for them. What really gripes me are the ones riding the little motorized carts because they're too obese to even walk through the store and all they have is junk. But when there are little kids involved, well, I don't think it's any different than other forms of child abuse. Remember the kid who didn't want to take chemo and radiation for his cancer and his parents were sued and accused of killing their son? I remember watching it on the news and thinking to myself that so much attention needed to be given to parents who are literally killing their kids by feeding them nothing but junk and never making them get outside and move around.

I didn't get the gym moved out of the spare room. Brian had a guy say he wanted to come take a look at it, but he never showed. And Brian said I needed to make-up my mind what i wanted to do with it 'cause he's only moving it once. I thought about putting it on Craig's List, but I really don't want to get rid of it, I just don't want it in the house! I have all of these ideas for that room, but can't do anything with that thing taking up half of it! But the room is now nice and tidy and somewhat organized. I still need to go through all my RE stuff and better organize my files. And our household stuff. I was gonna strip Uncle's desk yesterday, but this stupid sickness changed that plan! One thing at a time.

I'm not finished catching up with ya'll, but I'm having a hard time keeping my eyes open. I miss all of you! I'll check in later. And by all means, wash your hands!!! Especially with school starting back.

Oh poor Cherry. I am so sorry you're sick. I hope you are much better tomorrow. Just go to bed and sleep it off. That's the best thing for you. Sleep! There's all kinds of strange stuff floating around the air right now. This weekend we had the kids and Coryn was sick. She had a low temp and was throwing up. Poor kid. But we were talking about the swine flu and Chloe wanted to know about it. I just told her the best way to not get sick is to eat right and get sleep. If your body is worn out and you don't eat the right foods with all the good natural vitamins and minerals then your body's resistance can't fight off the bad germs that attack your system. But if you're healthy and get enuf sleep your body can fight and take care of you. So get some sleep, girl! Get better!

Hey Tina! Is it raining at your house? It's been lightly raining here all night!! It was so nice to hear rain drops again. We sure need it here bad. It's been the strangest weather this year. Some people have had rain all summer and others have had drought.

I picked a bushel of peas and a 5 gallon bucket of okra last night. I am going to pick all the corn that's ready before I leave for the market this afternoon. And some more beets, too. I think I will wash them off. It might make them look prettier, all nice and red and clean. I'll just take a bucket of water to keep them in.

It was pretty scary out there picking. I told the SIL I was going out to the jungle to pick and if I didn't come back to send out a search party. It's getting bad out there. Way too weedy for my comfort. I was waist deep in some places picking peas. And the okra is taller than me. No weeds in there, though. But it was all I could do to not freak out about snakes crawling over my feet. I think when I pick the Silver Queen corn I'm going to put up the rest of the fence and put the bucks out in the garden to fatten them up for butcher day. I'm ready to lighten the load here. I have the roosters put up in a pen now so that's nice. And if I could just get rid of the guineas now. I have lost another baby so they're down to 11. And one of the adults doesn't look too good today. I had to shoo the parents and babies from off the road just now. I want them gone but not that way.

I hope Cherry is better this morning. Get plenty of rest today.
