Alee, I love how you said that your beans are just sitting there, looking at you funny! They are like, "Now what?" At least, they flowered. That is a good sign!

LOL, about getting sidetracked, Kris! I just had to get up and do something when I read that. It reminded me. Ha! - I am so thankful that Abby recovered from that wreck. I know those had to be some of the worst moments of your life. Weird how scents can bring the full rush of memory barreling down on you. I'm glad that you were able to save this batch of bread and be thankful, no doubt, about Abby.

That reminds me, Cherry, how did La's cut on her forehead heal? And has she been driving again and comfortable with that? - Have a great birthday day! Pamper yourself, do the things that you enjoy, share it with the people that you love and don't be too upset with Brian if he doesn't come through like you want him to. But then, maybe he will surprise you. You just never know with guys.

We are going out of town today and won't be back until Monday. I am so excited! I still have this dang poison oak and I hope that the salt water and sun will dry it all up 'cause right now I look like an absolute leper.

Nikki, I hope ya'll have fun. I hope the poison ivy goes away. No fun to have that on a vacation.

I just tilled some of the garden up. It's way too hot to be doing that. But I want to plant some more corn before it rains. I raked up a bunch of goat poop and straw to throw out there on the garden. That's some good stuff. I wish I had a truckload. It's so dark and the chickens are scratching it up really good. Thanks chickies!

I got another handful of young beans this morning. I am thinking of letting the rest mature to dry beans. I am tired and not feeling the greatest. I think I will go lie down!

Hope you all have a great day!

Goodness, ya'll, everytime I tried to post on here yesterday, the power would blink and we'd lose our internet connection! It stormed like crazy and we're supposed to have more today! The pressure is about to crush my poor ol' head, so I wish this system would move on outta here! But, the breezes sure are nice!

Nikki, I hope you have a great beach trip, too! The salt water and sun will do wonders for that poison oak! And La's little head has healed up nicely. Of course, it looks better to me than it does her. And you best not remind her that she chose to not put any Vit E or anything on it that might have made it look better. But she's good! She's still staying pretty close to home, but is after her daddy for a new car. That's promising!

Alee, I'm so happy you were able to find a job! I've been looking for something to do part-time, but no luck so far. So I've been trying to off-set things by spending as little money as possible! Every little bit helps!

Thanks, Kris, for the birthday wishes! Typewriter or no, I intend to fully enjoy the day! Mama's even cooking me one of my favorites -- meatloaf, mashed taters, and black-eyed peas with cornbread! Yum! I can't wait! You know you've "matured" when you look forward to a good birthday meal instead of the presents!

Ugh! It's beginning to thunder. I'd better run so I can unplug everything to keep it from getting hit by lightning! Good Friday to ya'll!

I looks like it will rain here any minute but hasn't yet. I picked a little basket of beans and field peas so far then had to take a break. Man, it's nasty hot out there. I'll pick more later tonight.

Your birthday dinner sounds yummy. But I still like presents! I got a bunch today in the mail. I posted over on ATF thread.

I hope your head feels better soon, Cherry.

Did ya'll notice we have over 500 posts on here?

Hey Kelly! My husband is up there in Maine, too. Hmm... He drives a truck and has been there almost 3 days now. I miss you, too. I hope ya'll are having a great time. My hubby said there is some kind of lobster fest going on up there. Yummy. Have you been to it yet? Tell us all about your vacation when you can. I am jealous! I think I will take a vacation in Feb. or March. I need one bad. And it has not rained at my house yet. Up the road about 4 miles they got about a 10th of an inch last night. Wow. They won't have to water, huh. Have lots of fun.

It has just been the most wonderful day here in Ga. I spent most of the morning under a tree in the yard writing letters to all my pen pals. It was so cool. Kansas came out wearing a rain jacket. Said she was cold. In the middle of July. I'll take it. Could have been yesterday when I was out there drenched in sweat while I picked the garden clean. But that's ok. I did not sweat at all today. I loved it. I am very thankful.

I hope it was nice in Alabama for Cherry's birthday. Hope you had a great day.

Kris

Oh, girls, I had the very best day! And wasn't the weather absolutely perfect, Kris? I was wearing a light sweater up until about 10:30! Oh, it was beautiful! So here's the run-down:

Brian took me to Pepper Place and I LOVED it! Nikki, it was the best! We bought a basket of HUGE peaches, zucchini, blueberries, a block of gouda cheese, a tub of dessert goat cheese (yummy!), a stevia plant, an orange mint, and three different types of lavender, some soap for the little dog, and a really unique plaque that has a quote by Emerson, "For all I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen." (I took a pic and will post later, no time now.)

We left out from there and kind of meandered around, remarking how beautiful and vital Birmingham could be "if only", and then we went through Crestwood, a section of Birmingham where Brian's grands lived, because he wanted to see how much it'd changed since they passed (a lot). We ended up at a store my mama's been telling me about called Garden Ridge. There I hit the mother lode! They had hardbacks for 25 cents!!! Brian told me I could have all I could carry! I still had marks on my arms from those books two hours later, I had so many! Then we moseyed on over to Trussville and did some mutual shopping and shopped for his mom's birthday.

We came home and picked up La, then went to Mama and Daddy's. For supper, Mama cooked meatloaf, mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas, fried okra, fried squash, and cornbread. (And hamburger steaks for La and Brian 'cause they don't like meatloaf.) Oh, I was as stuffed as a tick on a lazy ol' hound dog! And I got to play with the bibbies who are ALLL over the place now!

But the very, very, very best part.....the typewriter I told ya'll about? Well, one reason I wanted it so bad was because my great-great uncle (who raised my mama) had one that sat on his desk where he typed out his sermons. He was a Church of Christ minister. He passed away when I was 7. After he died, Mimmie kept his office the same, and when I was over there, I'd sit at his desk and pretend all sorts of different things, like I was a minister myself, or a novelist, or a teacher, or a secretary, or on and on. But I'd also put in a piece of paper and type him little notes, like that I missed him, or that my sister was being bad, what we'd done that day. Stuff like that. Mimmie passed away when I was 14, and Mama had to sell alot of their stuff to help with Mimmie's nursing home bills.

Well, La told Mama about Brian and the typewriter. So, Mama gives me my presents, a necklace and earring set she made me and some Bath and Body Works products, then she tells me that she has one more gift for me, but I have to close my eyes. When I opened my eyes, there's Uncle's typewriter sitting on the kitchen table in front of me!!!!! Oh, ya'll I just bawled like a baby!!!! And Mama had typed me a note and left it in the carriage, telling me how proud Uncle would be of me and how he would have been honored for me to have his typewriter!!!! (Oh, I've started crying again!)

So, yes, I had a great day! It was fantabulously great and all the well wishes of my dear, dear friends helped bring it about! Thank you so very, very much!!!!!

Now I'm off to the dirtbike track in Eastaboga to watch all of La's friend-boys race on this, another beeee-uuuu-ti-ful day!!!! I hope all of ya'll have a great Sunday, too!!!

Oh Cherry! I am just a boo hooin' here, too. How wonderful for you! And this typewriter will be so much more special that that other one ever could have been. I am so glad you had such a great birthday day with you family. And what a hubby after all! See? They just up and do something like that and ya just gotta love 'em anyway! I hope ya'll have a great day and a safe day, too. Thanks so much for sharing with us. I feel like I was there with you. Your mom sounds like a great mom.

Thank you, Kris and Diana! And Mama is pretty great, Kris! In fact, I had to write up a little card to send to her, thanking her again for making this birthday so very special! And, now, here are my pics!

Here are my Pepper Place goodies:

And here is Uncle's typewriter with Mama's note:

Geez!! I am still crying over that typewriter!

Cherry, they are big! I went and ate breakfast and thought they'd be done when I got back and they still aren't all there! I have the slow dial up. Anyway, where is the cheese made? Is it local? I have got to make some with all the milk I am getting now. Way too much. I think I'm going to take several gallons to a friend who has 5 pigs. They will love it.

It is still very cool here. Still have the windows open wide. I picked all I wanted yesterday for dinner. I think I will wait til Wed. to pick more beans. Maybe by then there will be enuf to make it worth the time. I was talking to a few other people that are having the same thing happen with their beans. Nice big healthy plants full of flowers but only a few beans here and there. And the field peas have tons of peas but they sure take their time being ready to pick. We had some yesterday for dinner and man, they are too good! They just melt in my mouth. I said they night not make it to market, they're so good. And every ripe tomato had a peck or 2 on it. Those chickens I think are so cute running all over the yard and gardens are not good around tomatoes!

Ok, the pictures are finally all done! Wow, those peaches look good. And what are the plants again?

I have a friend up the road who has about 25 blueberry bushes that are just loaded with berries. They are yummy. I have picked 2 gallons so far.

Whew! I changed the size of them. We'd be forever sliding back and forth across this page to read anything!

Kris, the dessert goat cheese was made at Bulger Creek Farm in Notasulga, AL. I have no idea where that might be! It tastes kind of like a cream cheese with chocolate chips in it and it's coated with crushed pecans. And the dairy cheese was made at Wright Dairy in Alexandria, AL. I bought three different kinds of lavender, a stevia plant and an orange mint. And those peaches are so delicious!

It's feeling pretty spiffy again here this morning! I have the doors open right now. My butter peas took a while to be ready to pick. And I love field peas! Slice open a piece of cornbread and smother it in field peas with a bit of chopped Vidalia on top, yum, yum!! Those chickens are your taste testers!

I walked up the road yesterday afternoon and picked some blackberries. I'll probably pick some more today so that as soon as I have enough I can make Brian a cobbler and freeze some to snack on later. If I have time to, that is. Today I have a meeting at the office, then I have to get in the pool and clean it out, plant my new herbs, and do some flowerbed clean-up. And I have to get in our spare room and clean it out. (Brian's getting very aggravated about it!) Oh, and I have Uncle's old desk and I'm going to strip it and repaint it. I've been meaning to do that for months and just haven't got around to it. Now that I have his typewriter, I have to get it done so I can re-unite the two!! :)

Cherry, I was only kidding! I wish I could get pictures on here. I love to see all of yours. That typeweiter is in great shape. I'm sure it will be happy to get back on that desk! You have a very busy day today. I have been to Wright's dairy with Kansas. A few years ago we jumped in the car and took off over the mountain and hit highway 11 and went south. We took a little tour of the dairy. I wish they would sell raw milk, though. The ice cream was so good. That was a fun little day trip.

I am not going to do much of anything today. Although it is the perfect day to be in the garden. I might til up the spot I've been working on. Get it ready for some greens soon. It's about time to plant all that.

Have a great day!

I am so happy to come back here and catch up with all the things that y'all have been doing! I missed y'all!

Oh, Cherry! You made me tear up with your typewriter story! How wonderful and special! I am so glad that you had such a great birthday with meaningful gifts and getting to share some fun shopping adventures with Brian! Your lunch sounded so yummy! And my mom makes me jewelry, too! It is like we are having parallel lives or something. Weird.

Didn't you just love the dessert cheese! Notasulga is down in South Alabama. It is a tiny little place about 40 or so minutes east of Montgomery.

Alee, I hope that you are okay. You have been going and going. You deserve and really need some rest. I hope that you have been able to get some!

Kris, so glad that y'all have had some nice and relatively humidity-free weather. I hope that you will have something that we can help you pick when we come to visit you!

Kelly, that is funny that you were on your son's laptop because I tried to get on my son's laptop while we were gone. But it just wasn't the same. I hope that you are having an awesome time in Maine and on the coast. What a dream trip! You'll have to give us all the inside info on where to go and what to do!

Y'all, most of my alligator fantasies came true at the St. Augustine Alligator farm. I posted photos on my blog. But y'all it was awesome! I got to feed them and watch a really big one eat stuff. We went to Savannah, Cumberland Island, and St. Augustine. Wow! I loved, loved, loved all the tropical lushness that we got to experience! Thankfully, my sister lives in a pretty central place so we stayed with her and we are already planning our next trip to visit her again.

We went to the beach in St. Augustine, Cumberland Island and Tybee Island and each one was completely different as far as sand texture and water quality goes and that was interesting and cool. But I have to say, Cherry, that I haven't seen anything that beats the Gulf Coast as far as beaches are concerned. I love traveling and getting to enjoy other places. It gives me an appreciation of our beautiful and varied country and also leaves me with immense satisfaction with my own beloved home state.

Thanks Nikki!

Things have slowed down a bit here. I go out to the horse barn every day and have gotten to ride a couple of times. Tala is doing great and Nora is in love with her.

I am going to another job interview today. If I get hired it will be another dollar an hour over the other job. If not I will be going to the other job to officially accept the position.

Hope everyone is doing great!

Welcome back, Nikki! As soon as I read about the alligator farm, I had to pop over to check out your pics! That croc is absolutely HUGE!! And that first pic looks like that gator is holding up his claws to warn you to back off! Mama and Daddy keep telling us we need to go to St. Augustine. They've been several times and love it. I noticed, too, the difference in the beaches and sea water when we went to Charleston and down to Savannah. We have it all here, from majestic mountains to beautiful beaches! And I loved the quaintness of Tybee Island! I wanted to go to Cumberland Island, too, but we ran out of time. Now that you've been, you should read Dorothea Benton Frank. Her books are set in that area and it's so exciting to read about a place you've visited. I'm so happy you got to realize your alligator dreams!!!

Now that you've mentioned it, I do remember seeing a sign for Notasulga on our beach trips. And it's a good thing I bought the little container of that dessert cheese cause I could definitely make myself sick eating it!

We do have a lot in common, don't we? It's so cool that Lovin' Man is a pilot! Where does he hangar his plane? Pell City? What does he have? Daddy's is in Blount Co, up around Corner and Hayden. Does Lovin' Man ever fly up to Moontown? Daddy goes up there quite a bit to eat lunch with his other pilot buddies. He's working on rebuilding an antique two-seater right now. He had it up here at the house for the longest time for Brian to re-weld some of the joints and then Daddy sandblasted it here. That was the most Daddy's ever been up here at the house and I got a kick out of it! Brian told Daddy he loved having him here because I'd cook lunch for Daddy before leaving to go to subdivision duty, something I don't do normally. But he's my daddy and it doesn't feel right not taking care of him! When Brian and I were dating, he thought he was getting someone who'd wait on him hand and foot because every day when Daddy got home from work, I'd have a glass of tea waiting on him and when he sat down in his chair, I'd take his boots off for him. Brian saw all of this and figured he'd get the same treatment. He figured wrong.

Kris, I didn't get to that to-do list yesterday, so I'll be working on it today. La decided she wanted to spend the day with me, so after my meeting, we did just that. We took the little dog to the vet, then dropped him off with Brian at work and went to Books-a-million. Goodness, I could spend hours in there!

What a small little world we live in that you've been to Wright's dairy! I wonder why they don't sell raw milk? Their cheese is absolutely yummy!

It looks like our exquisite weather is leaving us today. There is rain forecasted for later today and into tomorrow and then our typical Summertime weather returns. It sure has been heavenly the past few days!

Nikki, Kris asked me about which day we're gonna head her way. Still want to go on the 28th?

Yep, Cherry, I learned to make tea for my Dad early on. When I was a teen I was frustrated with Mom for not keeping up with the iced tea supply when she knew that it was the one thing that Dad really wanted, but now I realize that she had probably had enough of doing his bidding (LOL!) and her refusal to crank out the tea was her one way of showing it. Ha!

Lovin' Man did go to Moontown recently, but I didn't go. I think that was the day that Oakley and I went to the cob building class. I wonder if he met your Dad. That would be so cool! It is such a small world! He doesn't keep the plane in a hangar. He just keeps it at a grass strip near our house, which is convenient as far as distance goes but it limits take off and landings to daylight only since there are no lights. I have had to drive out to Pell City to pick him and his friends up several times when they arrived too late to see.

I really, really want to go back to Cumberland and camp overnight. We overheard the park ranger giving the campers the lowdown on staying there and my brother was totally making us crack up by pretended to be him and sounding like a boot camp instructor. "You may not respect me but you will respect Sea Camp. When you pansies get done here Sea Camp will have made a man of you!" You know, just stuff like that.

I wished that we had more time to explore St. Augustine. We spied what looked like a restored pirate ship but didn't have time to stop after we went to the fort since we still hadn't been to the beach, the only thing that Oakley cares about....water and swimming.

I can't remember if I already tried to read DBF's books about St. Mary's or not. I think that my MIL offered to let me borrow them, but I must not have since I cannot recall anything about them. Will have to pick them up!

I did like Tybee Island, but it was very frustrating because I think everyone from Savannah was there, too. It was a beautiful day and I don't blame them for all wanting to enjoy the beach, but I was exhausted from driving around trying to look for a parking space and trying to keep from killing all of the pedestrians.

Oh, Alee, I hope that you get the job that pays more money! I'm glad that Nora is going to grow up to be a horsewoman like her mama!

Y'all, I just had a BLT with the T being some of my very own. How deliciously satisfying it was! I got to take some tomatoes to my sister's house too and we all enjoyed them together. But dang, I don't think that I will have enough to can. We keep eating them as fast as they ripen. They are just too good to save for later!

Nikki, I lived at Tybee Island when I was a teenager. So many good times I had there. Back in the day I was a mess. Snuck out and skipped school. Hung out on the beach all the time. I hicthhiked all over that island. We lived over near the lighthouse and the old fort in a red brick duplex with a huge old oak tree in the front yard. We spent lots of time up in that tree, too. But back then we could go all over the fort. There were cat walks all over it. And we'd go down in the dungeon. Too scary but so fun. My best friends lived across the street. My first kiss was from a boy who lived right before you got to my house on the right in a big huge motel lookingplace. Right on the front porch! I also spent a day in the jail house. My mom found out me and my friend skipped school. We were at my house. The police man came to the door and knocked. IMy friend took off because her dad would have beat her senseless if she got caught. So he put me in the car and took me to jail. Put me right in a cell, too! For the whole day til my mom came and got me out! Boy was I mad at her. I wrote everything I could think of on the walls, too. I showed them! Anyway, some really good memories in that place. We go back whenever I go visit my mom. We hung out at the beach in the little cafe on the corner and listened to the jukebox for hours. White Rabbit and Maggie Mae. OMG, we had such fun.

Well, that took half a page. Sorry. Going down memory lane here.

I'm glad you're back, too. Is it raining at ya'lls house now? Send some here. All my stuff's drying up. It's so depressing. I need to see if there are any beans. I haven't even looked since Friday. I thought I'd just ignore them and see if they grow any more.

It's clouding yo here a little.

Kris

That is totally awesome, Kris, about Tybee Island! I wonder if what you wrote in the jail is still on the walls? We didn't have time to stop at the Fort but of course, we drove right by it. Were y'all able to go up into the light house, as well? So cool about your first kiss. You should write all that stuff down with some photos from that time and save it in a scrapbook. I bet the kids would get a kick out of your memories and adventures. LOL!

I thought that it was supposed to rain but I didn't hear any last night. I usually don't wake for storms, just weird noises.

I am taking a break from picking. I already have almost a bushel of beans!!! I am pooped and need to eat but need to get back out there. I did a bad thing and looked back to see how far I'd gotten. Not far! I picked 2 big baskets of squash and zuc and a bucket of okra so far. I have to pick corn, too. A guy wants 3 dozen already. I think I'll go ahead and bag it up while I go. It takes so much time when I get to the market.

It's sprinkling!! And nice and cloudy, too. But just a light sprinkle now. I knew I should have picked beans last night. That takes SO long to do, too. So I hope I have a good market day.

Nikki, the fort has been made into condos now. It's over by a museum. Yes, I have been in the lighthouse many times. Did ya'll go there? It's such a fun place. But it's grown so much since I lived there. Too crowded now. And ya have to pay to park at the beach, too. I always wanted to go back and rent one of the beach bungaloes for a week. That sounds like fun.

Back to work. See ya'll.

I had the best day at the market, ya'll. I picked for 5 hours. I got 2 1/2 bushels of beans, a bushel of field peas, 11 dozen ears of Hickory King corn, a bucket of okra, 2 big baskets of squash and zuc and about 7 cucmbers. I sold all but a little squash and a basket of beans!!! It's a zuc and okra year. I am so glad everything sold. What's left we'll have for dinner!

You all should go check out the Tala pics thread in Barnyard Buddies, and shoot me an email if you want to be added to my private blog about Tala. I promised not to publicly post pictures of Tala unless they are approved by the breeder because a bad picture can ruin the mare and the stud's reputation. And seeing as how I someday want to breed Tala- that was a good promise to me! So anyway I set up a private blog so friends can see her in between approved public pictures :D
