Oh, Kris, sorry that you had to mow down the corn. But I am glad that your crew is reassembling!
Yes, Alee, you will be ready to settle in for a longs winter's nap after all that you have done!
I am literally up in the middle of the night. I have got dang poison ivy all up and down my arms and had to get up to put more Caladryl on. That stuff stinks! But I didn't put it on before I scratched it so now I am a gooey mess.
Y'all I picking my very first Mr. Stipey tomato and when I cut into it the inside was yellow. I thought, "Oh, yuck. It isn't really ripe." But I ate it anyway. And Y'ALL is was so tasty! Some other ones are getting ripe now. I hope I will get to bring some to your house, Kris!

Poor Nikki. I am so sorry you're having such a bad night. I hope you got some sleep. If I get in poison ivy I just get a spot here and there. Not like a rash, thank the Lord! But I have seen some people get it all over. The guy at the feed store had it on his face last week. I sure hope you get it under control soon. I wish I had some great herbal remedy for you to try. Maybe someone on theHerbal thread would.
Maybe the Mr. Stripey tomato is supposed to be yellow in the middle if it tasted good. I've never had one so don't know. I have Carolina Gold and they are orange and have no acid. I just picked one last night.
There are alot of dead tomato plants out there. I am not being good about watering them. It just takes so long to do. I need soaker hoses bad. That's another investment I have got to have if I keep doing this.
Alee, I bet you had fun with your neice. Is she and Nora close in age?
I am going to Mrs. T's 92nd birthday lunch today at a nice little restaraunt in St. Elmo. All her kids are here to celebrate. Then we'll go back to her house for cake and ice cream. I sure hope the air is on. It's hot already.
See ya'll later. Kris

Nikki, I'm so sorry about the poison ivy! You get bunches of "poor babies"!! Nothing I hate more than itchy poison ivy and chiggar bites! But "yay!" about your Mr. Stripey! I've never had one either, that I know of, so I agree with Kris, if it tasted good, it must have been ripe!
Truth be known, I should probably mow down my pitiful corn, too, Kris. Is it not too late to plant more? There's a family friend of ours who has a big garden every year. It sits right on the "major" highway through town. I noticed that he got his started really late. I was beginning to think that he wasn't going to put one in because he's got to be in his 80's. But he has something coming up now. I can't tell what it is yet. I replanted some pintos last week-end, but they haven't come through yet, if they even will.
Nikki, I didn't make it to PP today. Not only did I not get a check yesterday, I think I've got a sinus infection, so I'm feeling puny. I'm really aggravated about that check, too! The agent handling it decided to push back the closing so he could go to the beach. Hello!!! Other people need their money!!! Sometimes I just want to pinch a person's head off!
Kris, I'm happy your brood will be gathered up again soon and I hope you enjoy yourself at Mrs. T's party and don't fall over from heat exhaustion! Take a straw in case you need to slurp your ice cream!
Alee, I hope you get to that nap soon!
And Nikki, I think a lavender/oatmeal bath is in store for you! You should go all out and make having poison ivy a celebration with candles, lovely music, and your favorite beverage in your prettiest goblet as you soak your itchiness away!

Plans changed for tonight now. I went with Heather to get the other 2 kids. Jeff went to get Kansas. He may be bringing his 2 kids home for the week, too. Yeah. There will be kids all over then. I'll put them to work in the garden! I need pea pickers and shellers. And bean breakers. They like doing that.
Cherry, there's just something about having money in your pocket to make ya feel better, huh? Why can't people figure that out and pay ya when they're supposed to. Good grief!
Nikki, you need to pour a box of oatmeal in the bathtub and soak awhile. I think that's supposed to relieve the itching and dry out the bumpies. Hope you're better soon.
I think I will plant more Silver Queen corn when I get it tilled again. And more cucumbers, too. It's still early yet, so plant more corn, Cherry. And I will probably be gardening when I'm 80 if I live that long. I love older people's gardens. They're all nice and neat and they weed all the time.
Alee, I never could sleep with my kids and now my grands want to sleep with me. I always let them fall asleep then either move them to their own beds or go there myself. Chloe has to have the lamp on and I cannot sleep with loghts on. I have to have darkness. So I don't get much sleep when they are here.

Aw. She is so sweet. I've been woke up like that before, too. My kids always would end up in the bed with my parents when they came to visit. I have pictures of them all cuddles up with them sucking their little thumbs with grandma and grandpa on either side. So cute.
Well, I wish ya'll could have seen this dinner party I went to last night. The table was set with all this beautiful china and real silver. Cloth napkins and crystal wine and water glasses. We had champaigne in these little beautiful tiny glasses. I have never had any so I had a glass. About 3 sips is all it was. But it was good. We had slices of cantelope with mint leaves sprinkled all around the plate first. Then George, her son, had grilled grass-fed filet mignon with rosemary and herbs and it was SO good. With baked potatoes and roasted fresh veggies. Pat, her duaghter, made from scratch a chocolate cake for desert with the best ice cream. It was all so good. Candles and flowers on the table, too. It was beautiful. A very nice 92nd birthday dinner with family and friends. What more could one ask for? And the house smelled so good. Pat had sent her a huge bouquet of flowers with the really smelly good lilies. They smelled the house up. And with the rosemary and all the other food smells, it was great. I didn't get home til 11:00. I haven't been out that late in years. But it was fun and she had a great time, too. I can only hope I am as healthy and beautiful as she is when I get that age.
We had a few sprinkles just now. I hope we get more tonight. We still need it badly.
My newer rooster, Mr. Woo, died yesterday. Belly up he was. Poor thing. I have no idea why. But of the 8 chicks that hatched about 4 months ago all but 1 or 2 are roosters. One of the RIR was trying to crow yesterday. And all the others are probably roos, too. And my goats had another round of worm problems, too. I almost lost 2 of the little boys yesterday. So I wormed them all last night. The boys are much better. They both had bottle jaw. I thought it was too late for one of them, but he's good this morning. I gave them both another kind of wormer this morning, too. Just in case. And in 2 weeks I'm doing it again. I have never had this much problems with worms before. I think I just have too many for such a small place. I think I need to sell a few of the does.
Anyway, it's been hectic around here. All the grandkids and DD and her hubby are back. I just took my hubby to his truck to leave on a run. I hope there will be beans and other stuff to pick Monday morning. I ned to go to the market! And I have to get some fence up soon.

Oh, Alee, so funny about Nora dealing you a hand first thing in the morning!
Kris, that dinner sounded so beautiful and scrumptious! Sorry about your roo and baby goats. My FIL has lost 3 of his baby deer this year. Something bad must be going around in the animal kingdom.
But, y'all, oh I am so thankful for that rain last night!
Cherry, I didn't get to go to PP either. I went with Lovin' Man to drop Ducky Girl to be bred. Oh, we want lots of puppies! Oakley is already rubbing her greedy little hands together and coming up with names and making plans for the care and feeding of the little guys.

Talk about rain! Oh my word! We got a cloudburst for about an hour here. Just sheets of rain coming down! I couldn't believe it. The river has been running really high this year. Just over the past few days it had receeded from ULTRA high water line and had dropped maybe a foot or more and last night it was back to flood water height again.I really want it to go down so I can take Tala for longer walks (you have to walk under the bridge to get to the trails.
I was inside the arena riding a friend's horse when the cloud burst hit. In less than half an hour there were puddles that were over a foot deep and we sprinted for our car about 200 feet from the door to the barn. I was so soaked I had to change shirts in the car and I had to turn the heat on! It was crazy and amazing!

We had stormy rain here. Lots of it. I think it must have rained and thundered all night. I am so thankful, too. And glad ya'll got some, too. I was jest in the garden picking beans and peas, squash, zuc and beets. My boots had 10 pounds of mud on them, I could hardly walk. I am exhausted now! And soaking wet. I am taking a break now and cooling off.
I have all 3 grands here while their mom went to town. Kansas and Coryn are drawing and eating. They eat constantly! And Chloe is on the piano playing Christmas music. We will break beans in a few minutes. They like doing that.
And while I was out there I heard a crow. I had heard one of the RIRs trying to crow the other day. But this was coming from the front near the garden. And the only one up there was Jimmy Buffet. He's crowing! I had to look and see how old they are now. They are just 11 weeks. He sounds so cute. Maybe he'll start singing soon, too!
I guess I'll make some zuc muffins to take to the FM this afternoon. Cuz I'm going. I haven't been in a few weeks and I miss it alot.
Nikki, what kind of dog is Ducky Girl? And does your FIL know why the deer died? I need to go out there and give some of the kids Vit. B shots today.
I went up the road yesterday to see the 2 kids I sold last week and give them some worm meds, too. The wether had runny poop. The guy was giving them scraps and goat feed. They've never had that before. Plus being in a strange place and strange grass. I told the guy to stop giving them feed and scraps. There is plenty for 2 small goats to eat there for a long time. I did get to give the wether some worm med. but couldn't catch the little doeling. The guy had donkeys in the pasture when he put the goats in. The donkeys almost killed the girl. Kicked her right on the back. The guy thought it might have broken her back, but she looks fine now. So he put the darn ole donkeys in another pasture. Poor goats.
Alee, I'm glad you got to go riding but sorry ya got rained out. Looks like more rain here today.

Rain, rain, glorious rain!!! It would have been even more lovely if Emma-dog weren't scared of thunder!! She kept me up all night long, pacing and crying or just climbing her 80 lbs on top of me in the bed! I was up and down all night with her. Finally there was a break in the storms and I thought she might settle down and let me get some sleep, but then she had to go out to do her business! Not 15 minutes later, another storm was rolling through and she was scratching at the door like crazy just as I'd dozed off. I slept later than I have in a long time, not getting up 'til around 10:30.
Alee, when Lauren was little, she'd get in the bed with us and always seemed to wind up sideways between me and Brian. Whoever was lucky enough to get the foot end usually got shoved nearly off the bed! But I sure do miss those days! I'm so happy you were able to ride yesterday! I can just feel your love for horses over the miles and it makes me smile!
Kris, that dinner party sounds absolutely da-vine!! I guess it would have been rude for you to take pics to share with us, but I sure wish you could have! And how wonderful you were able to enjoy it without suffering a heat stroke! Sounds like Mrs. T is definitely blessed with God's favor to have such a thoughtful family and wonderful friends like you. I pray we are all so fortunate!
And I'm so very sorry about Mr. Woo, but so very excited for Jimmy Buffett! Your little rooster's growing up! And I hope the guy up the road listens to you and doesn't lose those kids!
I hope you have fun with your grandbabies! I know what you mean about them eating. If La asks me once a day, she asks me 10 times what can she eat! I swear I don't know where she puts it. Right now she's about to eat chicken fingers and mac-n-cheese and I bet within the hour she'll be looking for something else!
Nikki, I'm curious as to why the deer babies died, too. How old were they? I bet Oakley IS excited about the prospect of puppies! I love babies, too! And one of these days we ARE going to make it PP! I might try to go Saturday. It's my b'day and the day is MINE!
Looks stormy again outside. I wish I'd plunked some more corn seed in the ground yesterday. And pinto beans. And maybe even more northern beans. Oh, well. I might try to run out there in a minute and do it. After I eat!

Oh ya'll. I think I have lost at least 5 pounds today. I started off in the garden. I had all 3 grands most of the day. The SIL came home and helped me put up more fence for the goat kids up front. I moved goat kids up front. All but 2 I carried up front. 2 I had to drag because they are huge. Before this I brought the cows out to move back to the pasture. They didnt want to go to the pasture. They wanted to stay under the apple trees and eat the leaves and branches off them. Just at that time a truck pulled up the drive way and this young guy said he's come to get a goat. I said ok, which one? He said one about 1-2 years old, a girl goat. I said I have a few in milk I'd sell for $200. He said where's the $50 ones. I said they are the young boy goats. So he call his nanna up the road who sent him here to get one and told her. He said she'd come look at them herself later. So anyway, I asked him if he'd like to help me get these cows over to the pasture while he was here. He jumped out and helped me get them in. Very nice young man. I need one of those here at all times. Quite handy to have around, for sure.
So cows are happy in their pasture that has grown more grass since they've been off it. But then I put all the does out there, too. They weren't quite sure at first, then they decided it was big enuf for all them.
Then I got Chloe and Coryn to help me move a stanchion over to the fence so I could milk later. They were so cute helping me. They are very strong kids. They also picked up all the rotten apples fron under the trees. And cleaned the upstairs. And cleaned the little house. They've been busy kids.
So I am all clean and cool now til tomorrow morning. It's nice to be so clean after a hot stinky day outside. My hands hurt from dragging goats all over the place and doing the fence. And milking.
Cherry, I have 2 dogs that just turned 12 July 7th that are so scared of thunder and fireworks. It's awful. I can see them shaking. They hate July 4th and New Years. So I feel your pain.
I forgot to tell the part where we all went outside at Mrs. T's because my hubby rode his Harley to the party and they all wanted to see it. They all thought Mrs. T should sit on the bike and have her picture taken. She swung her leg over and sat on the seat like it was hers. We got lots of pictures and were all standing aroung watching her and she finally said her legs were hurting and she needed to get off now! It was so funny and she was so cute. But I bet she was sore later, poor thing. 92 on a Harley.
Good night, ya'll. Kris

Kris, I love it! Chloe playing Christmas music in July. That is when I enjoy it the most! And your rooster named Jimmy Buffett! That is a scream! My goodness, you have had a ton of excitement! That thing about getting Mrs. T onto the Harley is so funny and wonderful and telling about that 92-year-old Southern belle. Tough! That's what she is! You are just totally cracking me up! She goes from eating dinner from exquisite china and drinking from dainty goblets to straddling a Harley. How's that for extreme! HA!
Happy soon-to-be Birthday, Cherry! I hope that you will have a wonderful day of doing whatever you want and plenty of money to do it with! I hate that I will be out of town and not get to go to PP! Oh, I hope that all of the new stuff in your garden will grow and do good!
Ducky Girl is a black lab and Lovin' Man's bird dog. I swear, I never knew that I was going to have to compete for attention with a DOG! You can fight another woman, but dang it, what can you do about a dog? I guess I'm going to have to have a baby now and that's all there is to it. LOL! Not really. But I have thought about it.
And the baby deer. I don't know why they are dying. My FIL sends them to get an autopsy done so I guess we will know in a couple of weeks. Lovin' Man was up there when one of them expired. Boy, was I glad that Oakley and I weren't there to see it since I know that we would have been traumatized!
We picked three tomatoes yesterday!

Musical animals playing at Kris' farm! Goodness, Kris, you wear me out and put me to shame! Good thing you had your little helpers there with you. And having a nice young man to come along right when you need him! I hope his Nana comes back to buy one of your does. And I'm with Nikki about Mrs. T! I love, love, love that she posed on the Harley for pics!
Alee, I need to get out there and mulch my garden, too. But really it needs to be tilled again before I do that and I have to rely on Brian to go get the tiller from his brother and he's just too busy to do that right now. I'd go get it myself if I could get it loaded on the truck. Thinking of the nice young man who helped Kris, I wonder if I could talk one of La's friend-boys to go get it for me? Hmmmmm.....
Thank you so much, Nikki! For once I don't have to work on a Saturday and fortunately my b'day falls on it! I've already got kind of aggravated with Brian over the whole day. La and I went to the Leeds Flea Market and I found this old, old Corona typewriter that is in perfect condition. I got so excited! I immediately had visions of Hemingway and Thoreau! I had thoughts of pounding out a brilliant novel on it! I felt a charge from my soles to the top of my head and saw words and phrases dancing around in my mind! I told La that when her daddy asks her what to get me for my b'day, to tell him about that typewriter. Well, she informs me yesterday that he did ask and she told him and he said that I wasn't getting that typewriter because it'd just end up being an oversized paperweight! Burned my butt! Why ask what I want if you aren't going to get me what I want?! So I asked him about it when he got home and he gave me this nervous laugh and told me that he said no such thing. Yeah, right! I told him he didn't have to get me the typewriter, I'd just get it myself, but that we would be doing what I want to do that day, starting with going with PP! He said, "Oh, really?" And I said, "Yeah, really." He said, "I don't recall you getting me anything for my birthday and doing what I wanted to do." And I said, "Well, bucko, that's your loss 'cause I asked and you told me 'Nothing', so nothing's what you got!" So now I'm racking my brain, trying to think of something I'd really like to do that he won't necessarily like to do to get back at him. Yep, I'm being pretty devious and I'm loving it!
Oh, Nikki, I understand about the dog business! When I brought home that little dog, Brian was so mad at me. But now, Little Dog is decidedly his baby! He even talks to him in this little baby voice and "answers" back in this "Harley voice" like they're having a conversation! And if Harley comes and gets in my lap while Brian is on the couch, too, Brian will pout! That silly little dog even gets first attention when Brian gets home! He runs up to Brian and shakes his little butt then will stand on his hind legs and put his little front feet on Brian's legs and paw at him until Brian picks him up, all the while Brian's saying things like, "What's the little dog been doing today? Did you miss me? Did you miss your daddy? Well, come on, come on!" It is absolutely ridiculous and hilarious all at the same time! And you're right, there is nothing you can do about a dog. I told La that one day I'm gonna tape them and send it in for a $10,000 check and call it a finders fee for bringing these two together!
Makes me sad about the baby deer. How many does he have? One of Brian's buddies brought home a fawn they'd found while hunting one time. I'd sit in the pen on a 5 gal bucket and it'd nose around on me until it came across my earlobe and then start nibbling on it, thinking it was it's mama's teat! She grew big enough to lose her spots and then she jumped the fence one night and was gone. Brian was mad that Phillip took her from the woods to begin with, figuring her mama was just out of sight but close enough to keep her eye on her baby. But Phillip insisted that she'd been abandoned. When La was little, one of my uncles found a mama deer dead on the side of the road with her twins laying beside her. He brought them home and put them in with his goats. TT took La to see them a few times and she talked about those twins for weeks! My cousin fattened them up and then butchered them. We had to tell La that he'd turned them loose. Every time TT would go back with her, she'd ask if they'd been back to visit and where exactly they went in the woods. To this day, I don't think she knows that they ended up in the freezer!
My tomatoes are doing really well. I have two gallon sized freezer bags full in the freezer to can and picked 10 yesterday. My pinto beans I replanted have broke ground. Brian's still dissing my corn though. And I picked enough butter peas yesterday to fill the bottom of a cereal bowl. HA! I think I'll be planting more of those, too! I obviously didn't plant enough beans, but will know better next year. I left some Kentucky Wonders on the vine to dry and La helped me shell those yesterday afternoon. I think it took all of 3 minutes. I really have to do better or Brian will never let me live it down and will be less inclined to help again!
So now I'm off to do some real estatin'! Happy day to all of you!

Alee, that sounds strange to say the last half of the season. I have hardly picked anything yet. By now I would have canned tons of beans and tomatoes and corn and all kinds of things. I might have picked maybe close to 2 bushels of beans so far. This is awful. I will plant more cabbage and some brus. sprouts in Aug. and spinach, lettuce turnip, mustard and collard greens for fall. I'd like to plant more corn soon.
Congrats on the job. I didn't know you were looking. That's a good job, too. First you need to get out there and get the garden in order! You can't let it go or you'll be sorry. So get out there fast!!
Cherry, happy early birthday! Men can be so silly. And unthoughtful. And plain ole selfish, too. I would rather do something by myself anyway. Why drag a husband around? I can get more done on my own.
I have never grown butter beans. Are they pretty easy? I also have never grown field peas and am beginning to think I should have planted the whole field in them just to get enuf to sell. I did pick a small bucket yesterday.
And 3 tomatoes is way more than I have gotten at once, Nikki. Good for you! I have 1 on the kitchen counter just begging to go in a sandwich. I'm making bread now so I can do that.
Me and the grands just picked a gallon of blueberries from my friends bushes up the road. Well, I picked a gallon while they swam in her pool and ate 1/2 a gallon that they picked. They pick to eat. Their berries never make it to a bucket. Right straight in the mouth they go. That's the way I like them, too. SO now I am making a blueberry-peach cobbler for desert tonight. Sure wish we had some vanilla ice cream.
See ya'll. Kris

Alee! So glad that you got a job! It is rare to hear THAT being said during these trying times! I hope that you will be able to plant and work some more in the garden, too! Have y'all had more rain?
Kris, oh my mouth is watering! Fresh bread! Blueberry and peach cobbler! Yum! I love that you are giving your grands the kind of summer memories that will last a lifetime! What y'all did yesterday is the essence of summer to me. Picking berries, swimming, eating grandmother's fresh baked-with-love goodies.
I am sorry that everyone is having such a weird gardening season. Hopefully, what y'all plant now will perform better!
Dang it, Cherry, why couldn't he just buy the typewriter? LOL! I love the idea of you pounding out a great American novel on that thing. Kickin' it old school! He couldn't possibly have realized how many brownie points he would have scored with that thing! Oakley and I love that flea mall! She would rather go there when she has money burning a hole in her pocket than any where else! And they saved my behind recently. Lovin' Man realized the other day that we didn't have The Shawshank Redemption anymore (I loaned it to my dad to watch like 4 years ago), so I popped down to the flea mall and got him another one. Cheap, fast and easy. I have been salivating over those cast iron Dutch ovens that they have. In the fall, when I finally attempt to make bread the MaryJane way, I will be getting me one of those pots!
I hope that you have a wonderful birthday full of fun! I know that I would get Lovin' Man to take me to The Highland Grill. I got Frank Stitt's Southern Table book over a month ago and have yet to cook anything from it; I just want to go there and let him cook it for me. HA!

Oh, about the dog business. I understand why they say that dogs are "man's best friend". They greet you so ecstatically, as if you are the most wonderful person in the world and all they ask for in return is some food and a scratch behind the ears, and then if you let them, they will be right there, waiting, on edge, for any morsel of love or attention or food (ha) that you feel so inclined to give them. And then they thank you so profusely with love shining in their eyes, their little doggy tails wagging, and that goofy, slobbery doggy grin. Yes, I am sure that men would like us to behave just like that, except with our boobs hanging out, of course. Ha!
How funny/sad about the twin deer. Don't ever, ever tell La. Let her stay innocent! - I don't know how many baby deer FIL has. Several years ago some people gave him a pet deer that they could no longer keep in their neighborhood. They had actually spray-painted the word "PET" in orange on both of his sides. We thought that it was magical to get to love on this soft, shy creature. But then several months later he went into rutt or whatever you call it and he tried to hump everything in sight. He humped me as I was crouched down looking at tadpoles and he got mud on my camera. I wanted him to die right there! A coyote ended up getting him instead and I said, "Good riddance." It was like The Yearling all over again. Not!

Nikki, about 10 oclock last night while I was reading my book I was really into, I read about them making sandwiches on nice homemade bread and I realized I had forgotten to finish baking my bread! It had risen the first time and I made 3 loaves and had them rising in the laundry room. We ate over next door then I got to milking and all that other stuff and plum forgot that bread out there! So I jumped up and ran back to look and they were all 3 stuck together and huge. I pulled them apart gently and they didn't fall. I was surprised. So they are all fine. But that reminded me of the other time that happened when Abby had the bad wreck and almost died. The hospital called right when I had put the dough to rise the first time. When we finally got back home hours later the house smelled like yeast. Of course it was no good by then. Not a good memory. But this bread is good. I am getting very forgetful. Just get so busy doing other things I get sidetracked. I know I am not the only one here that does that!
There is a place not far from me that has a field of goats and a deer in with them. They've had it for years now. And also a few years back there was a white deer that would wander around up and down the roads. It had an orange collar on. We finally found out who it belonged to. All the way over on the other road across the ridge from here. He come get it and the next day it'd be right back over here. I haven't seen it in a long time now.
My dog Bubba just loves my SIL. He stays next door when he's home. And when my hubby comes home he's all over him, too. So yeah, I can imagine they would love us to be that way too.
