I have "Crocketts Victory Garden" and I am starting to feel like it is going to be my "bible" this summer. I am determined to have a really successful garden to prove my husband wrong! He kind of feels like gardens are a bit of a waste of time. So I am going to put a lot of sweat into this one this year!

I should look for info on the original Victory Gardens. I feel like I put a lot of time and money into gardening, but I don't really get results to match. During the war, people were really relying on these gardens to supply their food, so they must have planned carefully in order to maximise results. Probably some good info. |

No, I think the problem is that I don't really have any one spot in my backyard where I can put in a real garden and have it get sun. So I try growing a bit of this and that, here and there, wherever it looks like there might be a tiny bit of sun. Some things grow well, but 1 or 2 plants don't produce enough to make it worthwhile.
I've been scared to try putting a garden in the front yard, because it might look sloppy and also because people and their dogs would have total access to it. But maybe a Victory Garden plan would look laid-out and official enough that I could get away with it. Even in the front, there wouldn't be room for more than a small raised bed. So I'd need to study up on what plants give you the most result for a small space.
Surely not everyone who had a Victory Garden in the 1940s had a huge and sunny yard, right? |

I would suggest you check out or buy "Crockett's Victory Garden" it's a great book. Lots of help and advise. Also do you have room in your back yard for a 16x16 square? If you do, you could build one of the under $125 greenhouses from last summer's MJF magazine. I have one and they are FANTASTIC! Really nice and they really do work!

Beans and squash are the best crops. They are high in nutrients, look nice, you can trellis both and supply you lots. These are what I plan to place in my garden this year.

Carrot's Love Tomatoes is a great book for companion gardening. I used it in planning my gardens this year. Alot of it made sense as to why I had some faliures last year. This year though I feel like I will be planting a bit more wisely.

Gardens in pots are wonderful. Might be a bit more difficult to feed a large family this way, but I have found for a small family they work great. You can recycle containers and scatter them in areas where the conditions are optimal for the plant. I have done cucumbers, beans, peas, onions, carrots, tomatoes and herbs in containers. The containers do dry out faster than the ground, but mulching helps a lot.
Also, if you don't want a formal vegetable garden but already have flower beds you can tuck a few herbs and vegetables right in your flower gardens.
A few of my favorite books are:
Weedless Gardening by Lee Reich All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew Lasagna Gardening by Patricia Lanza The Bountiful Container by Rose Marie Nichols McGee & Maggie Stuckley

Along with the herbs put in some pretty lettuces, Swiss Chard, eggplant....those are all very nice in flower beds.

My grandmother remembers planting a victory garden with her mother. She told me that she remembers that the president's wife had all the children planting one at the white house. I wish I could've have seen that. I really want to keep of the family tradition. |

Well the White House is once again planting a Victory Garden- so maybe we will get to see that again! I want to make planting a veggie garden a Mother-Daughter Tradition for Nora and I as well!

Cool idea! Yeah, I also heard about Michelle Obama planting a Victory Garden at the white house. That is super cool! I need to go out and buy seeds because mine are misplaced...I don't know where I put them last year. I need to plant soon and get some early veggies in. Yum!

I love the idea of Victory Gardens. Of course, those of us who are living in the country find it much easier than our city sisters to grow our own food, but back when the idea first -- ahem -- took root, many Victory Gardeners lived in little houses with little yards, or even tenements with nothing but rickety balconies to cultivate. Their challenges were great, but they met them, often with stunning success but more often just enough success to feel they'd made a little difference -- and there's nothing at all wrong with that!
That said, I'd like to see a book on Victory Gardening that takes the realities of most women's lives into account -- not everyone has the space, help, time, or physical strength to mount the kinds of projects chronicled in so many garden books. A book filled with affordable, creative ways around typical gardening challenges, and written with women of all ages in mind, would be different from all the others. It would be a hit. |

Yes, if nothing else, this economy is great to wake people up to how to grow a garden! I wonder how many people will be tasting a garden grown carrot or tomato for the first time this year! I hope they get hooked!
