Good morning Mavens!

Guess what I am doing?

I am hiding in my room, laying in bed with my laptop. I got to kick my husband out of bed this morning because, *hehehe* Nora was calling for HIM instead of ME AND it's HIS day off and today I have to work! So guess who gets to lay in bed till she wants to! LOL

HI guys!

I cannot sleep due to a pesky earache. So I'm online browsing around.
Kris: I'd love to see a specialist, hence, no insurance with our layoffs and job losses.
Alee: you are a lucky ducky today!

I have been freezing the maters until I can figure it all out. Jerry's family is in from the hills of KY and I was asking a couple of his aunts for canning tips and boy I got em! Not sure they comply with today's standards, but shoot! I have read the Complete Ball Book of Canning and that ain't working for me either! So whatsa gal to do?

Other than that, I've been in the mood to write. I'm working on a piece about America's fascination with County Fairs. When it's done, I'll email it to whomever wants to read it and tell me how great it is and that I should grow up and be a writer! LOL!

I went to bed about 12:30 and woke up about 6. Felt like I had just gone to bed. So went to the bathroom and got back in bed. We had the grand last night and she woke up at about 7. Up and running! She hits the floor running!

I went to see my friends earlier and watched the Ted Kennedy funeral service. Very touching what everyone was saying about that man. His sons had me boo hooing. He was a good man.

Back home now and it's getting dark out there. Gonna rain some more. It has rained every day this week.

I was driving up the driveway and saw one of the dumb bucks had his head stuck in the fence INSIDE the fence now. Dumb buck! So I went in to change shoes, came back out and the steer was throwing him around. He's screaming. I'm running and screaming. I grab my big stick to get the steer away from the poor dumb buck and he got loose. So I guess the steer was just trying to get poor ole dumb buck's head out of the fence! Problem solved! Never a dull moment around here. I know what few neighbors I do have think I'm crazy.

Dawn, I would love to read your article, too. I love county fairs. But I am used to the fairs with all the rides and food and animals. Fairs around here don't come with the rides. I was very disappointd about that. I go now just for the animals and the sausage dogs.

Hey MAves! Please check out the bulletin board in the henhouse when you have time. I am gearing up for the Harvest Hop and need your input.

Email me if you have any questions. Gotta get to the Dr's for this earache before I go deaf....

to all you Mavens that are doing the mini apron swap, the address you send them to is mine and it is in the Mavens list that Corinne has worked so hard on and sends to all of us.

Also if you would like to participate and giving a set of aprons to an undisclosed "someone", send an extra apron. Contact grandmdinah if you want to know who it is

Hello there friends!!! It has been busy here. I have painted rooms, scrubbed walls, windows and curtains and now it's back to our homeschooling schedule. It is so hard to believe that the summer is gone. It was in the blink of an eye. Our weather this year really stunk for the garden. I am hoping things will go better next year. I hope I will have more time to check in here now.

How are you all doing? I think of you often. Miss you all.

I'm on the second 100 of the 200 ears of corn that I picked. That's not including what I've sold, or what hasn't filled out yet. I'm starting more tomatoes this afternoon. Things certainly have been busy here at HTF. Getting primed for fall caft shows and festivities, birthdays, tractor pulls etc.

I've been really sick lately. I was diagnosed with viral meningitis as well as a vicious inner ear infection, so I've been (trying) to lay low. But as most of you know.... sitting still is NOT a strong trait with me. I just go go go! Yesterday, I went out to the small garden and pulled/dug up whatever I wanted to save and either transplanted it or put it on the burn pile. I was only busy for maybe an hour. I was so out of breath and my ear was pounding that I left the shovel and everything laying out in the yard as I hobbled to the house crying. Some farmgirl I am huh? I really have to not over due it otherwise Im screwed.
I've been nesting in the house since we got a new sectional sofa. It takes up sooooo much room in the living room, but there's definitely room for me, hubsters, and two dogs to lounge comfortably. But I've been reaaranging, and 'fall-i-fying' the house.
I can't believe that its almost Labor Day wknd, can you? Summer went by so fast. It seems like yesterday I was in Washington/Idaho cahorting around town with most of you! Just so ya'll know, I miss YOU ALL TERRIBLY! I've never been somewhere that felt so 'right'. That was 'me' to the core. I love the Eastern Washington and Idaho areas. Maybe someday I can talk JerrBear into moving. DOn't hold your breath though!

Oh! Dawn~so sorry to hear you've been sick. I hope you are all better soon.

I spent most of my summer going through this house and cleaning up, rearranging, painting what I could to make things look better. I have taken another carload to the thrift store and have more to go downstairs. I can't wait to start my fall decorating. I love fall.

I really wish I knew about good craft shows around here where I could try and sell some things. Unfortunately, I don't know how to get in touch with those who run these events. I have a ton of stuff I've crocheted and would love to make some extra money.

I need to get out in the garden and pick some beans today. I have a ton of them. I also have a ton of tomatoes just waiting for them to turn red. It's been getting cool here. I hope that it will be warm enough for them to ripen a bit longer. I have a bunch of kale I need to pick, blanch and freeze. I love it in soups and in a rice dish that I make with kale and red beans.

Well, the kids need me for homeschooling so I can't play any longer.

I'm just on my way out to pick beans too - we are doing salsa tonight, mixed garden pickles and corn relish tomorrow, then taking off for a weekend with my kiddo who just came home Sunday after working for my dad at the church camp the whole summer - not the best weekend to take off harvest/garden wise but I only get to hang out with Randy for 2 more years till he starts school so we gotta take the time when it's available.
Dawn - sorry to hear you are so sick - take care lady!!
Okay, not much time to chat, hope everyone else is doing A-OK!!

Ruth: do you have prairie peddler near you? OSmetimes those vendors know of other craft shows. Or once you do one, the person hosting it will invite you to another. I will try to look up some for you. Okay?

HI ladies! just peeking in to see how everyone is doing these days. Weird to see the teatime so slow... Our 1 year Anniversary is this week. Any idea on what you'd like to do to celebrate it? Not a lot going on here at HTF today. Its a rainy day...and cold so I'm heading back up to the studio to pound out some more creations for craft shows. I just hope that it's all good enough!

I was just thinkin' about you the other day Cheryl!! Good to hear from you - you can tell we are a bunch of gardening fools - no time for the computer during garden time:)
We had a good trip to Oregon this weekend - lots of rain, it actually broke the record for the day of September 5th and of course we were there with our outdoor activities planned:D Oh well, I have a lovely new umbrella (I'm thinking I will probably end up with one from every vacation I go on, so far I have one from Paris and one from the Oregon zoo) and John(DH) and Randy(DS) have fabulous new OSU sweatshirts and rain ponchos.
I'm hoping I can salvage stuff from the garden - it frosted last night, although not completely, I think stuff will still be okay if I pick it in a day or two - anybody know for sure?
Talk to y'all later

wow. Frost already. Its coming soon. My pumpkins are growing like mad. I can't hardly lift them to turn them.
I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to sleep tonight. My mind is going in a 1000 different directions. I know I shouldn't be on this thing, but I'm tired of watching tv and I've nothing new to read. OH, I could read my MJ mag, but I'm saving it for a special rainy day... which could've been today, or yesterday, or maybe tomorrow...lol!

I'm feeling so much better. Gosh, I forgot how much it stinks to be down like that. Thanks for the good well thoughts. Meningitis, no matter if its the 'good' or 'bad' kind, really stinks.

Frost already AG? Wow, I'm kinda lucky that I live on a hill, the wind blows a lot and it does help to keep the frost at bay.

Well Mavens our anniversary is coming up fast. What are you going to do for September 11th? I'm going to fly my flag of course and being it's Friday, I will be wearing my red shirt, that of course is for the anniversary of 9/11 and in support of our military that are risking their lives everyday over in Iraq and Afganastan. I'm not sure what I'll be doing for the Maven anniv. Any ideas? Hey here is one, on Friday why don't each of us post on here just where the "Heirloom Maven" experience has led us this last year. Just a thought.
Have a sparkley day my dears.

Happy Anniversary Maves!!

Have been so busy lately I haven't had time to get on here much...In laws coming this weekend for our baby boys birthday, which is today! I still can't believe he is 3!!!

So...gotta make this quick...have 5 cakes to bake this evening!! Sterling is great with cakes! The one he designed this year is a Cars theme (Lightning McQueen) Sadler is obcessed with the movie! So the design hubby came up with is going to take about 5 boxes of cake mix!!! He made Sadler a Spiderman cake last year that turned out really great! I will post pictures on my blog next week after everything has settled down!

I am hoping to be able to contribute ALOT of Giant Cape Gooseberry seeds to the Maven seed bank this fall...I still have 2 bushes that are producing, and I am going to let what is on the bushes right now ripen on the vine for the seed bank. Thaye are so delicious that ya'l HAVE to grow some next season!!!

Talk to ya'll later...hopefully things will settle down here in my world and I'll be able to chat on here a little more in the coming weeks!!

Hello mavens!!

I have been so busy. I just wish I had more time to come and chat with all of you here. I know everyone is busy, too.

Last week was a bit of a crazy and sad week. My sil (brother's wife) lost her 8 year old nephew. He was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy when he was only months old. His dad has done 3 tours in Iraq, came home the last time to find out his wife cheated on him, they got a divorce, she has been horrible to him and he's hardly had time to see his kids. Thankfully he saw them the previous weekend. But it's just so sad to lose a child. They also have a daughter with the same disease. So incredibly difficult. He buried his son on 9/11. I can't imagine the pain. It was difficult on everyone.

The kids and I were so busy studying for a homeschool scholarship competition and spent all day Saturday with them in testing. It was difficult and this was the first year they have had this competition. If the kids win the local competition they can go to Washington, D.C. to compete nationally. We will find out their results in a couple of weeks. It took a lot of preparation and work and we are relieved to have a little break for now.

I have been tending the garden. Made lots of fresh salsa from my tomatoes and peppers. Was able to freeze some of that. My mom gave us some peaches so I cleaned those up and froze some. Made a yummy peach cobbler, too. I wish she had more so I could make some jam. The weather was too cool up here this year.

Well, need to get some things done.
