I feel most like a farmgirl when

I beat the birds out of bed.
I outsmart the gopher, um late-gopher.
I see a spider (outside) and think he is my friend.
I'm fishing.
I knit socks without a pattern.
I see bees, stop, and watch, and watch, and watch.
I watch the sun go down, and look forward to doing it all over again tomorrow.

Ditto all the above!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned going to a farm estate sale or livestock auction and listening to the auctioneer's sing-song chant, and sometimes actually bidding? Something in me just responds to that with a thrill... A lot different than going to the mall....

I also feel most like a farmgirl when I read Mary Jane's Farm magazine, listen and post stuff on-line and when I put my cowgirl boots on with my apron. All of you make me feel like a "really loved" farmgirl. Thanks!

I don't live on a farm but I live in dairy country so it feels like a farm, I feel most like a farm girl when I am able to gather the tomatoes that grows on my back porch and the potatoes I can to grow, I also have a blue berry plant that does well. I love it.

I have learned that to have a good friend is the purest of all God's gifts, for it is a love that has no exchange of payment.

I feel most like a farm girl....
When I put the first seed into the ground to start a season of growing.
When I spend the morning in my gardens with only the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, as the heat of the morning sun starts to feel warm on my skin and feeling the black dirt that was newly dampened by the day before storm.
When I sit on my front porch with a book and a cup of coffee anticipating what the day will bring.
As I'm walking through the woods, imagining who walked among the overgrown grass and thickets by the old barn, before me.
And the best farm girl feeling to me is walking barefoot through fresh cut grass on a beautiful warm evening. What a better way to end a long day of never ending chores.

I feel most like a farmgirl when...

I hang laundry on the line outside for the first time each Spring (I've even done this by early pre-dawn moonlight. Special!)

I make scones with oats ad eat them warm.

I leave my house to sit on the front porch, and then step off the front porch to walk down the hill to the chicken coops, then down the gravel driveway to stand on the bridge over the creek, lean on the rail, and look down at the fish jsut below the water's surface.

I look around my living room and feel glad that there's no TV tempting us away from walking outside, talking to each other so we don't end up as strangers after 50 years of marriage.

Each day is a gift--unwrap it with gusto!

I feel most like a farm girl when:

1) I am at work (yes 40 hours a week) at a Living Historical Farm
2) When I am at home after work; cooking, baking, sewing, canning, embroidering, mowing lawn, scrubbing floors and cleaning.

This is a great post -- I love reading everyone's comments here. You all are so much fun!!

I feel like a farmgirl when....

I make a u-turn along the country highway to help get a lost calf back to where he belongs after watching him fall through the fence and end up on the wrong side next to the highway. I have now nicknamed him "The Punk" and look for him everyday on my way home. He's usually playing "King of the Mountain" on a hill with the other little ones.

When I dig my toes into the cool, soft dirt where I am planting vegies.

When I get out my own tools and make something or fix something and gently tell my hubby "I can do it myself" when he tries to take over the project, but then he lets me.

When I have my apron on and am coming up with new recipes for soaps and someone says it smells wonderful in the kitchen. Love it!

Hugs ya'll!

I feel like a farmgirl...
When I too put on my apron, always when I put on my apron.
When I can help the neighbor with a stray farm animal.

I feel most like a farmgirl when.......

I am enjoying that morning cup of coffee or tea, sitting on my suburban apt balcony and listening to the birds chirp and watching the sun peek thru the trees over the courtyard area. It's a great view and I enjoy it!

Also feel 'farmgirlish' when I'm attempting crafts, knitting, sewing.
Having my gkids over and sharing life with them!
Enjoy baking breads, homemade noodles and fresh cinnamon rolls

My 'farm' consists of two cockatiels . They were never trained by previous owner and are my challenge!! :)

Have a great day ladies!!

Blessings,
Linda

I'm in my farm style kitchen making loaves of bread when.....
I heard clip-clop on my mudroom floor. Scared me and found my mare who was in foal looking and talking to me. I told her come on Sugar your not having that baby in my kitchen. So I walked her out to the barn all the while I was talking to her and calming her down. I stayed with her the whole time and she had a beautiful philly. By the way the bread turned out fine. Just had to punch it down and let it rise again.

I thank God that I feel like a farmgirl all day everyday. I grew up on a dairy farm, went to college for 4 years, then got married. Now my husband and I have been married for 11 years and dairy farmers together for 10 years. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Even if you're living in town know that if you eat food that you buy you're still a part of farming - for without consumers farmers would only be gardeners :) That makes everyone a farmgirl! :)

I feel most like a farmgirl when I tie on my apron, slip on my "outside" shoes, and walk the trail through the woods to the compost pile. It gives me such a thrill to return vegetable peelings and coffee grounds to the earth as though I were making an offering of thanks to God, who provides all I will ever truly need.

-when I go out and feed my chickens and goats
-when I watch my new chicks hatching
-when i camp at our county fair
-when I'm proud to have my kids in 4-H
-when we hatch spiders in an aquarium on our kitchen table
-when we try to hatch turtle eggs in an aquarium and in our backyard
-when I smile to myself at the smell of hay and straw, bringing back childhood memories of barns, showing horses, chickens and goats
-when I make hand pies out of our own raspberries
-when I climb into our pick up truck
-when "I take a back road to get right with my soul" like Rodney Atkins sings
- when I pick flowers from my garden

I love this thread. So many things bring back the memories. Now that I'm on my little chunk of farmgirl paradise I feel even more like a farmgirl. Feeding chicks, having the kittens meander through the garden, following a tractor down the road, and the best of all is the smell of fresh mown hay. Oh that sweet wonderful smell of fresh cut alfalfa. Mmmmmm... Throws me back to some wonderful memories of hauling hay with my dad and taking a break with sweet tea and an ice cold watermelon.

I like this thread too!

And I agree with the smell up fresh cut hay, there is nothing like it.

I feel most like a farm girl when:

--I'm driving my husbands big diesel truck hauling fencing supplies or hay (get to do this once a month or so when he is not able to). Windows down, country music on the radio, enjoying the back roads.

When I think of computer virus/bugs/worms and would like to find a way to put my chickens to work on them. Or when I think of a hacker and think if my geese could only watch for me I wouldn't worry, they would set off alarms. Farmgirl problem solving for sure. Karla

~when I'm working in the garden harvesting the veggies
~when I'm canning the veggies after learning how to from my momma
~when I'm stitching on my cross-stitch or knitting hats for the winter
~when I'm teaching my children how to work outside
~when I'm listening to country music on my radio
~when I'm at the county fair watching the tractor/truck pulls
so much makes me feel like a farmgirl..I love living out in the country and being self-reliant. I only wish that we lived on a farm (I'm dreaming) to where I can grow things close to me instead of having to work the garden at my parents' homestead.

When I get to ride my horse bareback and I drive the truck thru the mud to get hay....
When I use my indoor grown herbs to make a meal, have fresh tomatoes in Jan, hand make a gift from old jeans, cook once and feed all week!
When I get to hang my laundry on the line
When I dream of someday have my own place so I can have a dog, rabbits, a garden and my horses in my back yard!

When I remember that although my little brick house is on a street in a wonderfully diverse neighborhood outside of Cleveland, that it was a farmhouse 100 years earlier.

There are other houses on what was the farmland and I get most of my vegetables and fruit from our CSA because I am a better writer and artist than am gardener (except for herbs!) but I channel the woman who lived here back then when canning, proudly using all but the squeak so the speak, when I compost the fruit skins and make vinegar for Chinese dumplings with the stones and pits.
