I feel most like a farmgirl when it's feeding time...something about hearing all the critters calling to me, Telling me it's time to eat. I love my goats, cow, chickens, rabbits & ducks

tspoon: what a great thread!

When I've got the woodburning cookstove fired up and I'm brewing that first cup of coffee just as the sun is coming up. Watching the sky turn pink. Hanging clothes out on the line. Mending my husbands work pants. Harvesting veggies fresh out of my garden when we have company. Driving around with my "Certified Farm Girl" bumper sticker on my beat up 4WD pickup!

Love you ALL!

I feel most like a farmgirl when I work in the garden and can my own fruits and vegetables. When I'm on the garden tractor mowing our yard and barnyard. When I'm working side by side w/my husband and kids on the farm. One time I even helped put dual tires on the tractor! (I've always hated my big arms because I'm not a big person-I guess God gave me those arms for a reason!) When I get up early and enjoy my coffee on my huge front porch. Just living in my 114 yr old farmhouse makes me feel like a farmgirl!

I feel most like a farm girl when:

1. I'm cleaning out the Chicken coop
3. I'm shopping at the feed store
3. I'm hanging laundry to dry in the sun instead of putting it in the dryer
4. I'm pulling weeds in the garden and planting

I feel most like a farmgirl when:

I'm in my veggie garden, on my hands and knees, and I don't care that I've got dirt all over me. I'm pulling weeds or thinning carrots and it's my favorite place to be!

I was putting up my 4 chickens for the night and found 2 eggs! These are the first chickens I have ever had, and the first time I have ever received eggs from my girls. I was so EGGstatic that I squeeled and said; "Oh, thank you, ladies! I feel like a FarmGirl now!"

When I harvist the tomatos and know I will have to do it tomarrow as well,
When I check the water barels to see how full they are,
When I move a lode of rocks for the latest project,
When I watch my wind terbin to see which deriction the wind is going,
When I take the jelly jars out of the caner,
When I cut the first slice of cake that I have made (from a box),
In mid October to late November when I am in a nitting fest to finish the gifts I'm making my family for Chrismas,
I feel most like a farmgirl.

I can't really express how reading this post makes me feel. It's been a while since I've dropped in on a group of folks who really make me feel like I belong... or at least, want to belong. I'm now 40 years old, and it seems that every five years or so, I find myself reaching out to find a comfy part of life. In the past it's been bands, singers, parties, teachers, librarians, geeks, working parents, natural mommas, babywearers, animal rescuers, sports parents... and now... finally... farmers - specifically farmGIRLS. I hope you all don't mind if I hang around for a while.

I have an apron, but now plan to wear it more than I ever have.
I've sewn things, but now figure I need to sew a few more aprons!
I've knitted a hat, but now need to make a blanket or two.
I've grown a garden, but need to give it another try.
I've made pies, but haven't in a while and need to get some good peaches.

I feel like a farmgirl all the time, but my working world keeps it buried. I feel best when I have my barn boots on - or no boots, shoes, flip-flops or sneakers at all. I feel best when I have a hammer or screw driver in my hand and am staring at something I am determined to fix. I feel best when I'm telling my sons that flower is Queen Anne's Lace or Goldenrod. I feel good when one of my dog's actually learns the trick I'm teaching them... or to leave my chickens alone. I love to see my new hens scratch along my fence line to find bugs. I love telling folks, "I got it from freecycle," or "I gave that away through freecycle." I love telling my husband to put a teabag on his eye when he had a stye because that's what my mother suggested. I love sewing a costume for my boys or some special curtains for their rooms. I love showing a new mother how to "wear" her baby so she can be hands free for a while. I love helping a person find a special animal companion though local rescues and petfinder.com. I love making up a fresh bed, or mopping the floor with old fashioned PineSol. I cherish the tasks my mother teaches me... now.... because I ASK her to. I love going "Home Home" to my mountains in PA where they seem to hug me like a down comforter and hold me close like God's arms. Does that count as being a farmgirl?

When I have my red cowboy boots on.
When I have my jeans on.
When I have my hair plaited.
When I am harvesting the crops; tomatoes, okra, beans, etc.
When I am mowing the yard.
When I know I can change the oil in the mower or fix a flat tire on the mower.

When I can.
When I have a long skirt and sometimes an apron. I really need to make some more.
When I am hanging laundry.
When I pull that laundry in and it has that wonderful line dried smell.
When I iron my husbands work clothes.
When I am in the mountains.
When I am fixing something that even a lot of the guys wouldn't try to fix.
When I make and then eat homemade bread. I love it straight out of the oven with the butter melting in. Ohhh yum! I need to make bread. :)

I most feel like a Farm girl when I pluck seeds from my holly hocks and morning glories to sow the next spring or give as gifts, when I make tomato pie with fresh grown tomatoes or when I settle down with a cup of tea and crafts ater a long days work

I read this marvelous thread and thought and thought and thought about what I could add that wasn't here and guess what. You all said it for me! That's what the sisterhood is all about. Aprons, canning, cooking, sewing, animals, gardening, dirt, tractors, firewood, family, friends, home. Yup. That about covers it.

When I face something I'm afraid of
When I learn a new skill
When I can be quiet long enough to hear everything

"Come to the cliff, " He said. "We are afraid," they said. "Come to the cliff," He said. They came. He pushed them. And they flew.

In my heart I feel like a farmgirl all of the time, but I most feel like one when I'm in my tarp apron, with wellies on, and have my hands in the soil planting. I love the feel of the earth, and the graditude I feel when something comes up. The pride I have when preparing it or canning it is amazing.

Today, I felt like a real strong farmgirl when I had to roll a huge round bale of hay out the back of my truck. Silly me forgot to put rope/straps down in the bed first. I usually tie the straps to a tree and pull the truck forward and the bale falls out fine.

The horses came running and kicking up their heels because they were so happy. So, I just climbed on top of the bale and sat there talking to the horses.

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."

That's what I would have done, also! I feel most like a farmgirl when I am outside with my boots on.

I feel most like a farmgirl when I can see the land and smell the smells, even if only in my mind. I can smell and taste the home-made bread, watch the wind flap the sheets around on the line, delight at the scent of the fresh sheets as they cover me; and wiggle my toes in the fresh-mowed grass. The smell of soft baby pigs and newly-hatched chicks help me know I'm a farmgirl at heart even if that long-ago farm I grew up on is only a memory.
