...when I pack a backpack and head into the woods to hunt for wild mushrooms!!! Can't wait to get there...and it is with an experienced hunter and college professor. How did I get so lucky???

Will report on our success later!

We started a picture swap on another topic and the pictures and letters we received are precious. It is so wonderful to put a face with a name. Would any of you like to swap pictures? If so email me your addresses and we can swap. My album is fantastic and you could have one also. Post on here if you want to swap and email each other your addresses. What do you think?

I feel like a farm girl when:

I call the kids in for dinner with our old dinner bell.

When i'm knee deep in mud working in the garden.

When I hang my laundry on the line (which still renders a nice smell, even in the city!)

When we sit around our campfire at night.

When I can tomatoes

When I make batches of soap (bars, laundry, dish soap) to last us a year.

When I put on my faithful apron

When I sit on the front porch and piece together a quilt in the evening.

When my kids leave a real dirt ring in the tub. It makes me smile, knowing that they are truely able to get dirty and roll around in the mud. A lot of kids never get that chance anymore.

A Kansas gal living in Ontario. Sigh.

I feel like a farmgirl when:

* When I'm canning foods that either I've grown in my garden or gotten at the local farmers market
* When I'm working on producing as much as I can in the small space I have
* When I can share our harvest abundance with my friends
* When I pull a quart jar of tea out of my lunch bag and people question what's in it
* When I'm making fresh bread or cinnamon rolls
* When man takes fresh baked items into work to show off
* When someone asks me what brand I use and I answer "homemade"
* When I take my lunch to work almost every day so I can save money to put towards my own farm
* When I'm making something and hear "Oh my god, I didn't think anybody did that any more"
* When my man tells me I'm an extinct breed and very hard to find and how happy is he found me
* When my 25 yo daughter's friend asked why her mother didn't get her a scarf for Christmas my daughter's replay was "Because you don't get scarves like this. My mom loves me and makes me scarves." and then to rub it in she turned to me and asked "When do I get my hand knit socks?" Her friend responded she wanted a new mom.

I feel like a farmgirl when:

-When I put on my kitchen apron--or my shop apron.
-When I create a wonderful meal out of odds and ends, after my husband has declared that we have "no food" in the house.
-When I make one of my grandma's delicious farm recipes.
-When I do one or more of my husband's evening chores because I know he is tired--or just because.
-When I bake batches of cookies and give them to friends.
-When I teach woodworking.
-When I send my struggling friend a few bucks to help her out.
-When I call an elderly friend of mine who regularly talks much too long--but I call him anyway.
-When I visit the Animal Shelter and pet some of the cats to calm them or walk some of the dogs to exercise them--even though I know I'll WEEP when I get back to the car.
-When I handwrite a letter to my cool Farmgirl pen pal.
-When I feed my kitties--before I feed myself.
-When I bring in an armload of wood and kindling and start a crackling fire in the woodstove.
-When I sit by the warm woodstove and tend to some needlework.
-When I burn my friend's homemade beeswax candles.
-When I taste a friend's delicious homegrown honey in my tea.
-When I do the right thing.

-When I share here.

Karen

I feel most like a farmgirl when:

On Sunday morning I wake up and start up my wood cookstove so I can prepare our breakfast.

In the middle of the night I have to put on my boots and walk in the could during winter to the outside "facilities".

My husband and I sit at the table under the lantern and play cards for hours.

Im most content when I am sitting in the quiet except for the crackle of the woodstove and am spinning wool.

I love this topic and I'm so inspired by all you farmgirls out there!

I feel most like a farmgirl when: It's snowing outside and we loose power and that pioneer spirit takes over. I light my lanterns
and put the cast iron kettle of soup on my wood burning stove and bake cornbread! I'd also be wearing my handmade apron!!

I feel most like a farmgirl when I have neat rows of freshly baked bread or a cooling rack full of jams, all while wearing my homemade apron as well!

This is my first post as well. How fun to hear like minded women loving the farmgirl lifestyle .. I feel most like a farmgirl when I gather clothes off my new clothesline, close up my chickens at night (especially when its pouring down rain and cold, when I watch a new baby goat being born..I am a farmgirl at last.

Welcome Melodee!!
I'm having a farmgirl day - when I make stuff from scratch rather than buy it - homemade croutons today.
Did some canning too, just 'cause I had some spare time.

I feel most like a Farmgirl living in the city when delivering the Chemo Caps to the small local Cancer Center in my community in the spirit of caring, mowing the lawns myself and my neighbor's lawn too while she is away at work, changing the light bulbs on my own on the ceiling, cleaning the air filter on my own, washing the laundry and ironing, finding special recipes to cook and bake, sharing baked goodies with my neighbor and relatives, the evenings that I knit and crochet and loom knit, relying on my own resolve instead of thinking that I can't and looking for positive ways to make things better around me. It's the little things too that make me feel like a farmgirl in the city..... complimenting someone and taking the time to appreciate others, greeting people with kindness and trying to be more patient, listening to what others are sharing with me, and making time to appreciate each day in some special way.

The spirit of the farmgirl is one of determination, strength, ingenuity, wisdom, and gentleness wrapped into one..... a caring heart.... and in the little things that I do throughout the day with the desire to learn new ways is when I most feel proudly like the spirit of the Farmgirl is alive and well with me.

Teresita - I cut about 2/3 of a loaf of homemade bread into crouton size pieces and put it in a pyrex casserole dish. Drizzled with olive oil then sprinkled italian seasoning and some seasoning salt over it and stirred well - it should have olive oil and herbs on all sides of the bread cubes but not be soggy. Then just bake in the oven at 300 degrees for about 45 minutes or till the croutons are crunchy - yum!!

I feel most like a farm girl when:

I wake up to the fresh smell of brewed coffee,
sit quietly on my screened porch in the summer listening to the birds sing,
inhale the smell of the first bloomed petunia's and pansies,
get my hands dirty in the garden and smell the fresh earth,
sit by the crackling wood stove on a cold snowy day,
watch the full moon rise over the valley trees,
pray for my family and friends,
And be thankful for all my blessings.
The freedom of "thought" keeps us all farm girls at heart no matter where we live.

Teresita and to all the other 'living in the city' farmgirls out there!! I feel very farmgirl as I knit, bake bread, canned some refrigerator pickles last summer,, grew herbs on my apt balcony, doing crafts, beginning sewing projects, and the warm spring days or cool fall days, when I sit out on my balcony and enjoy the grass and trees below me, the chirping of the birds and the sunshine on my face!!!

Blessings, Linda

I feel like a farm girl when :
I am out in the garden pulling weeds
Digging in the dirt
Cleaning out the chickens coops
hauling around bedding hay
Picking fruits from the trees or bushes then canning it or freezing it.
Putting on my poke-a-dotted mud boots!
Making a big batch of soup or stew & putting it on the wood stove to cook
As you can see it doesn't take much for me to feel like I am back home on the farm though my Farm is quite a bit smaller, but its big enough for me.....Michele' #2622

I feel most like a farmgirl when:

-Walking in the muck and mud to feed a calf in 9 degree weather
-Wearing my boots and my farmgirl camo cap
-Canning veggies from the garden
-Watching visiting family members fall in love with the farm
-Wearing my apron- Thanks Grace!
-Baking bread
-Taking summer 4 wheeler rides with my husband to see "what's new"
-Noticing the cow poop on my jeans in public and then laughing about it.

I feel most like the farmgirl I am when I pull on my jeans, boots and pretty, frilly apron and head to the farmers' market to sell my fresh, locally grown (with love) food.

Love this post!

I also left the farm recently, and now at the advice of farmgirl sisters here, I'm learning to *bloom* here.

I feel most like a farmgirl when
-I am packing up my kids to "go home", a visit to the farm.
-I am helping my husband get the mice outta here, and they don't make me scream anymore!
-my precious FIL sits and explains every step he's taking while he repairs another tractor.
-when my DH scooper me up and we ride out in the harvester just because!
-I discovered I didn't prefer my designer shoes and bags to my jeans and t-shirt anymore.
-when my kids are filthy, making mud pies or riding their quad, screaming, laughing while the dogs are running free without a gate in sight!

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.
