I feel most like a farm girl...
When I'm wearing my apron (that I made) and canning tomatoes that I harvested from my garden.
Hanging clothes on the line that just got washed in the homemade laundry soap I made.
Wearing my apron to gather the eggs from our backyard chickens.

I feel like a farmgirl most when my bones ache (lol) because I've been one literally and at heart for 67 years. I love the smells of the country, the sounds of nature. I like to bake, quilt, garden, can and all the things that you others do. I love our connections of living close to the land and enjoying the doing of it. I am richly blessed with all my farmgirl friends I hear about on this thread. I also feel most like a farmgirl when I wear my apron (which is all the time now because I'm getting sloppier (lol)and when I wear my farmgirl necklace. Woo Hoo girls! Thank y'all. Bonnie

I feel most like a farmgirl when I'm hanging laundry on the line, seeing the sheets billow in the breeze & when I pluck carrots from the ground or see the kids eating fresh peas straight from the garden since they're grown organically & when we're snuggling under a hand-stitched quilt, smelling homemade bread baking in the oven & when we're just plain enjoying nature and the simple things in life :-)

barefoot in my organic garden eating fresh veggies with my kids, living simply & naturally

I feel most like a FarmGirl when
-I'm out doing my morning chores and the chickens run to greet me
-Mrs. Turkey waits for her treat and lets me pet her
-I let the horses "mow" the lawn
-Bottle feeding the leppy calves
-I'm pulling weeds and tending the garden and I have to tell my boys not to eat ALL the carrots, straight from the ground, brushing the dirt off and putting the tops in the compost pile
-I'm carting loads of horse manure to the compost pile, and then turn it and water it
-I hang my laundry on the line and it's dry faster than the next load is done in the washer
-Crocheting gifts and seeing the look on the recipient's face when they find out that I made it for them, didn't rush off to the store to buy it.
-Chatting with my grandma about her days in the Alaska bush country
-Making applesauce and having to scold the boys for trying to eat it all the second I walk away!
-Riding my horses through the sagebrush, looking at the little tucked away valleys and chasing coyotes or horned toads

I feel most like a farm girl when.......

I bake my own bread.

I put the quilt on the front porch on top of the wicker rockin chair.

I have dirt under my finger nails.

I meet up with other farm girls on this website and realize being a farm girl is cool!!

Ahhhhh.

I feel like a farmgirl when

I have dirt on my knees and my hands and a freshly weeded garden.

I take the laundry off the line and smell the fresh clean smell of them!

I am sitting by the pond and hear the wind rush through the white pines.

I read the latest issue of MaryJanesFarm!!!

I got all warm and fuzzy reading all your posts! I feel most like a farmgirl when:

1 - My heart or head is aching, all I want to do is cry, but I tie on my handmade apron and it all vanishes in a rush of ancestral strength.

2 - I'm gathering fresh cut flowers in my apron and all our rooms teem with the heady scent of roses, peonies, and lilacs.

3 - I can look around the house and see several heirloom and handmade items, enriching our lives and lending our home that certain "homey" feel.

4 - DH and I are canning tomatoes, making jelly, whipping up homebrew, concocting a new soap, or baking cookies.

5 - I'm out working in the garden on a 90 degree day with a wet scarf draped over my head and my shoulders to keep cool.

6 - I'm in the garage with DH wrenching on my paid-for little diesel VW that gets 50 mpg.

7 - Open the mailbox and there's a ton of surprise gifties from Bonnie, my farmgirl friend!

8 - And as someone else said, when I get on the forum and see that there are SO MANY OF US. : )

I feel most life a farmgirl when I wake ridiculously early to get a start on the day, sit on the back porch and watch the sun rise with a cup of coffee - and look forward to the day - my two little boys, the laundry, the cleaning, the weeding, the animal care - with anticipation, instead of fatigue or mild dread about the amount of work it takes. I feel this so often now - especially knowing that I am in the fine "virtual" company of farmgirls around the country and the WORLD even (Hi, Beverly and Marian!)!!!

XOXO, Libbie

I feel most like a farmgirl, this morning, when I mixed up a loaf of sourdough bread with cranberries in it (from my own organic mother batch) then head out to the garden to check on all the beautiful veggies and deadhead all the flowers then pick up a stray baby frog and put it near a juicy piece of composted dirt and bugs. Ahhhh! love the morning!

I feel most like a farmgirl when... I am doing any task that I know my grandmothers or greatgrandmothers would have done. Making food from scratch, planting in the garden, mending clothes, smelling spring in the air, ....I sometimes will be doing a task and it hits me WOW...my grandmother would have been proud to see that I still enjoy the "old ways". Being a farmgirl comes from the heart, soul, mind, and body:) Barbara

I feel most like a farm girl when:
I get up in the morning, look to the heaven and thank God for all the wonderful things in my life.....
letting the chickens out and getting the fresh eggs for my DH breakfast.......
checking on the bees.......
before the world stirs......
working on a quilt until my DH awakens....
and all the wonderful in betweens....
then ending the day thanking God again for all the memories I have made that day, all in jeans, tee shirt, ball cap and apron!

This is a beautiful thread!
I feel most like a farmgirl when:
*I take the kids to the Upick it farm for fresh strawberries that we take home and make enough jam to last until next year.
*When I hear that lovely *pop* a jar makes after a water bath
*Learning how to easy it is to make something from scratch (today I learned how to make butter from heavy cream!)
*When I go out in the morning in my Target fakey Wellies (a gift from hubby) and see my container garden flourishing.
*Trying to decide which apron I'm going to wear (most of which I've made myself...some were gifts from other farmgirls)
*When I sew a quilt, some clothes or reusable bags just because I love to do it.

I feel most like a farmgirl when:

- I enter the horse barn where I volunteer and smell all the lovely barn smells and hear the horses great me with their enthusiastic "Feed me, Mom!" whinnies.

- I go online to chicken-selling sites and plan the imaginary flock of chickens my city won't allow me to have.

- When the birds start chirping outside my apartment at 4 a.m. before I can even see the sunrise.

- When my herd of dogs is running through my backyard. :)

- When I'm sweating and hoeing my veggie garden.

- When I'm harvesting teeny new potatoes for dinner.

- When I see my "farm boots", laden with mud and who-knows-what, outside the back door waiting for the next day of play.

- When I'm reading (and rereading) Maryjanes Farm!

This is awesome!
I feel most like a farmgirl when:
My hands, and the rest of me, are cvered in dirt!
Wear or just see the aprons my dear mother made for me @ 89 before she went to be with our Lord!
Staying outside in my garden and flowerbeds until it,s dark!
Opening all the windows in the house and smelling the fresh farm air!
Me too, peeing outside!
Baking more than I need and blessing others with the excess!
Picking and cooking my fresh bounty!
Buying any old handcrafts I can find because I don't want them to be destroyed!
Sitting on my screened porch even if I can see my breath and I,m wrapped in a quilt!
Enjoying all my old quilts and have them displayed so others can enjoy them also!
Taking a walk with my beagle to inspect my gardens!
The Peace and Quiet of the country!
Glorifyig GOD for HIS Many Blessings!

Please Pray for my DD who is having her 4th C-Section tomorrow! Thanks in advance!
Darlene

I feel most like a farmgirl on days like today, when I baked two loaves of homemade bread and took one to my neighbor and we sat and talked. Just like being in the country, even if it is a town.

I feel most like a farmgirl - all the time!
Watching a mother turtle lay her eggs in our dirt road & marking it on the calendar. Meanwhile, we avoid the area.
Seeing my cats peer out the door before exiting outside to make sure nothing larger then them is out there.
Wearing my mud boots all year long.
Picking raspberries & blackberries in my woods and raking up blueberries in my field. Picking the apples off our trees before the bears do. Then drying them and/or making jams.
Sitting in my chair by the chicken coop & watching them play all day.
Tending to my many gardens.
Getting advice from my Mother on something new I am doing, but it's old hat for her.
Sitting in my rocker outside at night and starring at the stars.
Watching the beavers in our pond, a pond they created.
Like I said, I feel most like a farmgirl - all the time!

Tina Michelle, Your story sounds so beautiful with your baby girl!
I feel most like a farm girl when I make something yummy for my husband when he gets off work (like fresh rye bread or chocolate mouse)!
~or when I am watering the little plants we have in our little pots in front of our windows!
