I feel most like a farmgirl when I serve my family and friends homemade bread with butter and jam I made myself. When I can send home baskets of tomatoes and peppers and squash with friends and when I can send up with my husband homemade pies for the firefighters.

I feel most like a farmgirl when- I have a wet calf in my lap after helping it take its first breath getting up at 5 on my only "day off" to feed the herd realizing my farm clothes have taken over my wardrobe fixing fence

The alarm goes off. I stumble out of bed, pulling my jeans on. I put my arms into a faded blue and yellow checked flannel, I wince as my finger gets hung in a hole of the tattered sleeve. I pick up my favorite warmest taboggon and pull it snug over my ears. I pick up my dingy, stained gloves, the leather worn soft from many chores. I stick my feet in my old boots and head to the barn. Pearl heehaw's her "good morning", and I hear Miss Nellie's bell tinkling her sweet goat greeting. The sweet smell of hay fills my senses as I give each animal their portion. Here comes Izzy, Mini-bell, Winston and the others. Everyone greeting me in their own way. The cold wind cuts through my flannel, the rain coming down like a curtain drenches me, my bones begin to ache. But I don't even notice. That's when I feel like a farmgirl.
~~Blessings, Mikki Jo

Hearing the sweet cockadoodle-do of the roosters in the morning as I stretch to get out of bed and make the morning coffee to start a new farmgirl day. Blessings, Karen

Me and my husband have our own magazines. When he is reading his (money, government, etc.) he gets all riled up. "how could they..." "I can't believe...." and on and on. When I read mine (of course the main one being Mary Janes Farm!) they inspire me. Remind me of what is really important in life. I CAN plant that garden and give my kids healthier food, I CAN spend quality time with them camping... teaching them what I learned as a child... the TV is off and no money is spent... only time given. Getting ideas from other farm girls, remembering things I had almost forgotten. FARM GIRL INSPIRATION is when I feel most like a Farm Girl. |

I feel most like a farmgirl when:
I get gussied up in my favorite jeans, t shirt, pretty sweater, pink nail polish, an apron and the cutest Mary Janes and go out into town to do my errands.
I go out and hang out with my birds clucking in the yard.
I go sit in my chair outside with my tea and watch for hours the hilarity that are my goats.
I bake my blue ribbon bread.
I can my organic local strawberries into jam.
I take things I have made and enter them into the fair...and win.
I drive my husband's pickup truck with a bed full of straw or hay that we have traded for.
I ride my tricycle that has front, back and saddle bag baskets into town in the summer to run my errands.
Every time I make an apron.
Every time I buy an old doily at the thrift.
Every time I take out the dinner linens.
oh goodness, let me count the ways....couldn't we all just go on and on and on and on.....

I feel most like a farmgirl when...
I run out to feed our horses after the kids hop on the bus. I pack lunches for my little ones wrapped up the way my mom used to. I work in the garden - and am so sore the following day. I start seeds indoors (including the African iris, marigold, and magnolias shared from fellow farm girls here). I experience the joy of offering others something beautiful that was grown on our land, produced by work, persistence, and prayers.

When I pack my school lunch in my reusable cloth sandwich and snack bags. (People always ask me what they are and why I use them.)
When I spend hours baking bread from scratch, using only my own strength to stir and knead.
When I tie on an apron and feel nostalgic and pretty in a farmgirl way.

I love reading these posts!
I feel most like a farmgirl when I got to the grocery store and see all the veggies and think to myself "Mine will taste SOO much better once the garden starts growing!"
I also feel most like a farmgirl when I open my canning cupboard and see all my canning jars "ready for action"!

I feel most like a farm girl when I'm sitting on our deck watching the sun go down, holding my husbands hand, drinking a glass of wine, and just talking, when I'm hanging clothes on the clothesline to dry in the sun, and when I'm waching all of my animals romp and frolick around, or chasing after unseen bugs,

I feel most like a farmgirl when....
I am reading a REAL book to my kids while drinking hot tea.
I tackle a new sewing project and give it away when I am done.
I find a great "farmgirl" item at the resale store!
I get the latest magazine and devour it for hours!
Happy Trails!

Planting and tending my flower garden: I love the feel of the soil and smelling it. Reminds me of being a child and the feeling of the earth between my toes, pushing the cultivator and watching the shoots poke up their little green heads. Working on my needlework, too. I think of all the women that I watched doing needlework when I was young and the questions I asked them about it. I remember Shannie, the woman who taught me to do cross-stitch when I was 12, and my neighbor Joanna with her needlepoint. I think of all the generations of women before me doing handwork. Seeing what I have made gives me a sense of accomplishment and I feel connected to those women.

I feel like a farm girl when I listen or help my neighbor. Even if I don't have the time. and when I bake my own bread and of course make my own laundry soap.

I am new but I feel like a farm girl when: I am making jelly Fishing Camping Crafting (desperately want to learn to quilt) and mostly reminiscing with my girls about my mothers mountain upbringing and her stories. I feel closer to her since I lost her.

HI Angela! Welcome to the "funny" farm!
Okay, my above post was a little icky... but I assure you, nothing says country like having to go outside!
I feel like a farmgirl when.... ...the screen door slams behind me ...I'm sitting on the tailgate of our truck watching the boys pull tractors ...family is around, talking about nothing and swatting flies around the picnic table ...I decide to visit someone for no reason other than to pop over and say hi ...I'm making decisions about my future. What to cut back on, what I can live without, what I can grow to eat, and how I can help my neighbors. ...cutting wood for winter ...at an auction ..when I've fixed something, by myself with no help! and lastly, ...when I make more than enough food for my family and I have enough to give others to take home. My mom never let anyone out of the house without a goodie bag. Nor do I.

I've been a member here for a year or two just haven't gotten around to posting! LOL This is a subject near and dear, so here goes! 1. When I am practicing the "feminine arts" of my mother, grandmother, and aunts, such as sewing, baking, canning, freezing, "putting up"... 2. When I plant a garden. 3. When I sit on the porch and hear nothing but the birds, the wind, and rain drops on the tin roof. 4. When I talk about all these things and people just sort of look at me like I'm the strangest thing around....LOL 5. When my daughter, who lives in town thinks I need to "get out more"!
By the way, I've lived on the same "farm" for over 45 years!! MrsGaylynn aka MrsHoneysuckle

I feel most like a farmgirl when: I can get my hands in some good black compost soil and get my tiny garden planted. It's in town and not as big as my very first one was but big enough to give me the wonderful feeling of fulfillment I crave each spring. Making something to give as a gift with my own two hands and having someone tell me how beautiful it is, knowing it will be kept long after a cd, sweater or perfume might have been. The smell of homemade bread baking in our oven. Canning jars of green tomato jam at the end of the growing season and having it sparkle like jewels on my kitchen window sill. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2472/3602753454_2057fae053_m.jpg

I feel most like a farmgirl when. . . I am on a roadtrip and am passing cute little farmhouses with chickens out back, flowers out front, rain barrels attached to the gutters, a cute little kid on a swingset, and laundry swinging in the wind and I know....inside sits a farmgirl (whether she knows it yet or not!)
Happy Trails!

I feel most like a farm girl in the summer, planting the garden, cleaning out the barn and helping my dad make hay. At 33 I finally am trusted to tedd and rake the hay, "I still am not allowed to bale but maybe this summer!" I feel real country carrying my 20 guage shotgun while I am raking hay but it is the best way to get the ground hogs! It is the greatest feeling getting that last bale of hay in the barn right before it rains!
each day is a new oportunity to create, improve, expand, and share. |

I feel like a farm girl when:
I'm out watering the plants, sewing on buttons, hanging the laundry on the line to dry, knitting, cleaning with my home made concoctions, picking figs off the fig tree, and when wearing my light weight cotton dress while doing all these things.
