I love this topic too! Shellee (PawPawGirl - cute nick!), welcome and I love what you said....."I feel most like a farmgirl when: I go outside and am one with our beloved Earth". That's the way I feel too. I love to sit on our back porch in the mornings and evenings and watch everything. Sometimes my husband and I will sit out there and have breakfast and watch the sun rise. It's such a peaceful feeling, enjoying the beauty in nature.
I really feel like a farmgirl out in the garden either planting, weeding, or harvesting. It's so satisfying to go out and gather things for our supper.

I feel most like a farmgirl when:
I sit down at the table with my family and all the food is homemade, very little coming out of the store, sitting at the homemade table, built by my sweetie, on chairs that used to be my parents kitchen chairs, built by my father. The woodstove is heating the house and everyone is cozy and warm.
When I put on my apron and bake bread and goodies for lunches for the week.
When I tuck my kids in with the blankets I made for each of them.
But especially, in the springtime when I get to stick my hands into the dirt in the garden and it's still a little cool, but feels just wonderful, and picture what it will look like when everything starts growing.

These really are great. You farmgals are incredible!
I feel most like a farmgirl when: Taking my boots off before I come in the house Some whiskery nose is pressed on my face and my mind hears "what cha doin Mom?" Enjoying laughter and ideas at the kitchen table Seeing a seed I planted sprout...literally and figuratively Standing up straight to stretch and noticing the big, beautiful picture around me Repairing my overalls...again

I feel most like a farmgirl
when I am driving my International tractor in the morning to feed our 300 head of cattle all while listening to old country songs on the radio with my red painted fingernails. Then getting to come in for the rest of the day and be wife and mama, cooking and cleaning.
It's so great to be a farmgirl!!

when I look around the table or the living room and see my family eating, or lounging or laughing together. I know everyone does this, whether they are in the city, or the country, but I love most the family times, the home cooked food, and the security I feel with them near me. It is what I remember most from the time I spent on our family farms as a young girl. And thank you all for giving me that same feeling when I post here!

Jeanie...you make me feel lonely. I don't have family near me except for my young son. Being with him is a joy though I would sure like to have a room full of family who want to be together.

when Hubby tells me that I need to wash my feet because we are going out to dinner. I was wearing flip flops in the mud and forgot all about them being dirty when I put my dressy sandals on..hehe ;) hugs

I feel most like a farmgirl when: I'm back home in Washington State in the spring and: Preparing the soil for my garden... Wishing there were a few less weeds to pull Wondering how in the heck I ended up with another rooster after ordering all pullets Finding one more half chewed mouse on my porch Sticking my head into a bale of hay and taking a big sniff Sitting in the barn on top of the hay bales just to hide for a while Brushing blackberry sticks out of the horses' tails Dancing between the house and barn in a downpour of rain..and loving it! I could go on for hours...so this needs to be it!

Jessie.....My hubby asked me the same thing last summer, except we weren't going out to eat, we just getting ready to go to bed and I had just put clean crisp white sheets on the bed, and as I hoped up there, plopped down, and grabbed a seed catalog for my nightly read...he looked at my feet and said "You're gonna put those dirty feet in this nice clean bed?".....lol...yep, you know that you're a farmgirl then!! And that's probably when I feel the most farmgirl, farmmommy, farmwife-y, those nights that I am SO tired from all my daily chores and what not that I would actually forfeit clean crisp sheets, all because I am Literally too tired to drag myself to the shower!!! |

when I am playing in the dirt. I spent much of the evening last night with my husband at the hospital. He had an episode that was terrifying, I am happy to report he is home today, on the couch awaiting more tests.. but doing well...........SO, I felt the need to stripe off my boots and walk in the dirt, in the garden.. since it is only 40 degrees here I didnt last long, but there is just something about the dirt that is calming.

Rene, I sure hope your hubby feels much better soon! It's the 13th now in the evening so maybe by now things are better. I liked your dirt idea!

Jessie and Kelley, I am right there with you. In the summer my feet see nothing but flipflops. It doesn't matter if I am wading in cow poop, rice fields, irrigating hay fields or going to town. My feet get sooooo dirty, Some nights I am too exhausted to drag my but to the shower. The next day I am washing sheets but thats ok. I feel most like a farmgirl when: 1. I am feeding my critters, having conversations with them. 2. Raking hay with only my thoughts as company. 3. I am handcrafting something. Or trying a new needle craft because I saw it on the forum and wanted to try it. 4. I see our son grow up on our ranch learning about nature, resposibility, God, and all that he blessed us with. 5. I get to work side by side with my hubby laying irrigation pipe or working on some odd project. 6. I get to see the cows out munching dewey grass as the sun comes up over the mountains. I could go on and on. 7. I am swappin' farmgirl ideas on the computer and absorbing so much knowledge from you ladies. Thanks! Thanks for this thread! I love it!

I feel most like a farmgirl when:
I awaken and the first thing I need to do is stoke the fire! I smell my favorite sourdough bread baking in the oven, and I know I am the one who made it from scratch. When my little girl says, "It's so quiet out here Mom...I can hear my own heartbeat." When Kaitedyd, my holy terror Jack Russell runs smack dab into the fence, and let's out a "Woof" of pure joy to just be outside, and running free. When I lay down to rest at night, give thanks for another day spent doing what I love, on the land that I love, with the man I love most in the world. When I remember where I came from, and how I got to where I am today.
Smile-oh yea, you will still get wrinkles, but at least they will be wrinkles worth seeing! |

I feel like a farmgirl when I am delivering dozens of eggs to my co-workers at school. I usually have some poop and hay stuck to the bottom of my shoes!
When I am making my food from scratch in an apron that was made either by me or for me by a friend. (My friend's boyfriend actually made me one as part of her secret-Santa gift to me! His first time with anything like that!)
When I am sitting outside by the chicken coop reading my magazines or planning my gardens.
When I make soap!!

I feel most like a farmgirl when: first thing in the morning while I am making my coffee, I care for my "mother". when I smell the fresh baked bread. When I am making my own cleaners or detergent. When I am canning. When I am working on my embroidery, or crochet (hexagon scarf) When I am looking through the heirloom seed catalogs When I am enjoying time with my family after a ver satisfying day of being a farmgirl.

Now I get me up to work, I pray the Lord I may not shirk. If I should die before tonight, I pray the Lord my work's all right. Anon. |

I feel most like a Farmgirl when:
~I harvest wild asparagus from our irrigation ditches to cook for dinner ~I open our fridge and see fresh Raw Cow's Milk in 1/2 gallon Mason Jars ~Making bread wearing an apron of course ~Making jams and jellies from fruit I gleaned ~Wearing a Ranch Coat, Muck Boots and hat :) ~Stacking firewood and bringing it in for a cozy fire ~Harvesting from our garden in a cute basket while wearing an apron ~Sharing the harvest with friends and neighbors ~Cooking with herbs I've grown ~Sitting in front of the fire knitting or embroidering ~I hear the Meadowlarks sing ~When the cows come around and I get so excited:)
Sandra, how exciting :)

I feel most like a farmgirl when:
I cook from scratch(all the time!) I sit out on my front porch and listen to nature I hear the cows across the street I hear the tree frogs start to peep in the spring I pick flowers along the road to put in a vase I come home to a campfire after a long hard day at work and when my sister's kids and my friend's kids bug them to come spend a weekend at Chuck and Lisa's place - and never turn the TV on!
