It is a good work out and fun too. Rene, latin dances are so much fun! I'd love to learn how to dance like that.

I was just re-reading the French Women don't get Fat book, very trendy a couple years ago, but it sounds like the same concept as the Sonoma. Portion control, eating in season, moving more, but not necessarily "exercising", very sensible approach so I am trying that. The other thing is getting my core back in shape as I went from a job where I used my core muscles non-stop, to one where I don't use them at all - this has resulted in a very unflattering weight transition from muscle to fat and also in sciatica and back pain. I feel like I am much older than 39 some days when I creak and moan my way out of bed.
Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruits and veggies - I discovered I really like cherry tomatoes for breakfast, although not when it is no longer cherry tomato season.
More power to you Rene - solidarity is the key
Alee - I am still laughing about your squishy green behind:D

:D Sometimes I think it really is attached!

I just blogged about starting my journey to health. I am determined to chart everything for a month and if I am still within my calorie limits and everything, I am going to the doctor to see if there is a problem that I can't take care of at home. I don't want to be popping pills but I want to be healthy again!

I am so proud of you Alee, often times we wait for a health crisis to get it all together... taking control of our own health is vital.

I feel like the slow but continual weight gain is a health crisis. My back hurts and I creak and pop when I get out of bed. I can't run and play with Nora like I want to. :( I am only 25 soon to be 26... I should be spry and energetic!

Alee, have you seen the comercials for the little toddler snacks? The kid running thru the house with the pot of dirt or the mom holding the baby trying to find the phone that's ringing and the baby has it? That's who you remind me of. It's so cute. But every time I see them, I think it could be you. I'm sure your life is very hectic, esp. if your in school, too, with a toddler.

I sure hope you reach your goal, girl. Just don't give up trying. You will get there, as will all of us if we stick to a plan.

That's my problem. I get all fired up about something, then in a week I quit. It's so important to have a cheering section when you start something new. If I weren't so darn tired, I'd jump up and do a cheer. Maybe later. But I hope you can feel my enthusiasm thru this computer!!!

Well a little update on my little trip to SONOMA.. I have to say, so far so good..I have discovered that when I feel tense or stressed, I reach for something to eat, so I am busy breaking that habbit with water... I am drinking more Water.. which is so great. A couple years ago I read F. Batmanghelidj, MD book "the bodies many cries for water" such a great book so, more water.........

I am such a visual person, That I went on line and printed out a picture of Sonoma and have it at my desk and one on my fridge as a reminder..... So, I have to say, so far so good, I dont feel like I want to pull my hair out.. that's good...

Ok the body ball... can I just say, with the size of my butt.. you would think I could keep it on the ball..................But if it is true that laughter is the best medicine.. then I should be "healed in no time", but I am staying with it... I am determinded....

I have decided that I will go to the little dance studio and BEG them to offer a latin for fatties class :).. I love to dance and that seems a better use of my time then.... well "sweating with the oldies".. not that that is a bad one... just... I desire something a bit more wild and free and "unleashed". (which may be way to much info)..........

So all in all.... busy breaking old habbits and trying not to break anything like bones...

Hahahaha...you should see me on the body ball, can you say, beached whale? I flop around and usually end up on my boosky on the floor, good thing for the extra padding!
I'll take the water thing to heart Rene, and try to drink more. I eat when stressed too, so I need to break that habit as well.
I've got to go shopping to get a pantry full of good things for the Sonoma diet , but looking forward to making progress.
Alee, you know, I didn't know that I had a failing thyroid until my doctor checked it out on a whim, it might be something to have checked.

I had my thyroid checked once before on my request and everything was fine. I hope it is the uncounted snacking that might be the culprit.

Alee - I had my thyroid checked too and it was normal but it just seems wrong, this creeping weight gain bleah! I know what my problem is though and it is pastries, working in a bakery with scones, croissants, cakes, etc. and then the cheese......
I'm trying though - drank lots of water today

So I am measuring my calories online and I am way UNDER the caloric need for the day. Yikes! I know what has been happening now!

I have been restricting and restricting and instead of losing weight, I have slowed my metabolism down. And then when I have an occasional splurge, it goes right to my behind and stomach.

So I have been snacking more and more trying to make sure I hit my caloric need for the day.

Annika,
I do have thyroid problems, brought on by my treatment for Lupus. That coupled with some bad habits, means I am up a creek with out a paddle... LOL not really. I am gaining on it, my habits are changing as I learn more and choose to be more authentic in my life choices.

I recently had my hormone levels tested thinking that I would go on bio identical hormones ( natural hormones), unless someone knows a better route.... to build thyroid levels....

I went down to the local dance studio today but no one was there, so I will try again tomorrow. A little cha cha is in order I think.

Alee~ I love the site you gave out, thanks what a great tool.

Well gals it seems like a lot of us are in the same place! I know that I need to shed some pounds and my problem areas are stress!!! Which causes the munchies which snowballs into junk food and then I top it off with a full plate and then feel disgusted! Such a vicious circle. I too, need to move more! I really like the farmgirl workout and it is! Those sacks and buckets are heavy!! I am going to commit as well. I just have to make the time! I did it before but then I had way more time to spend exercising! I will have to add time for it again!

Rene, I'm on synthroid for my thyroid and it doesn't seem to be doing much but making me jittery. Are the natural hormones better? do they have a greater success rate? just curious if you know... my doctors are sold on the synthetic stuff, and I'm on disability for other health issues, so I may have to pay for it out of pocket if it works better. It would be worth it. Sorry to derail here, but we are all having these weight issues so I'm trying to be as informed as possible.

I still think I'm going to look into dance for exercise.
Good for you for going to your local dance studio and trying to get what you want from them.

Well ladies- I have been watching what I am eating and trying to aim for a...if you believe it...a higher caloric intake. So far I have lost a little over a pound. I will weigh in again tomorrow morning. I have been feeling more content and less likely to pounce on anything that looks like food.

I highly suggest the site I am using. It is listed on my blog...can't remember the address off hand... Sorry! It really helps me keep track and it's free which is nice!

Okay, ladies, I'm on jumping on the wagon with you. Actually it's more like pulling myself ungracefully on it but whatever it takes. I intended to start when we got back from the last trip anyway but now it's mandatory.

Some of you may remember that I gained 5 pounds on our first trip a month ago. I managed to get rid of them but 3 found their way back. What I really didn't expect is for 5 MORE pounds to find me on this trip. I got on the scale this morning and there they were. The other 2 pounds came back and brought 3 friends with them. I haven't weighed this much in YEARS! And the really weird thing is that on this trip my clothes fit, which they didn't last time because of the weight gain. So I'm thinking it's a combination of water weight and, dare I say it, muscle (which weighs more but takes up less space than fat). That would be surprising though as we did a lot of sitting in front of the TV during the visit. We managed to get out for a nice walk the last full day we were there so that helped.

The main culprit I think is that I'm in the menopause zone. Not technically there yet, but well on my way. That's why I've been reading the Beautiful Bones without Hormones book. It's quite an eye-opener. One of the benefits of upping your calcium is that it helps you lose weight. In the Bones book, it says: "...increased dietary calcium makes cells less likely to store fat and more likely to burn fat when calorie intake is reduced. It appears as though too little calcium in the diet leads to decreased fat burning in the cells, and thus increased fat storage. The study goes on to point out that although it is important to get the recommended 1,500 mg of calcum in your diet every day, there is no added benefit from increasing your calcium intake beyond the recommended level." A few years ago I'd read that a glass of milk before bed (cold is fine) will help you sleep (because of the tryptophan) and help you lose weight. So I tried it and it did - it was definitely easier to take the pounds off when I drank milk. But then I read more books and tried different eating plans and the milk got dropped along the way. Now I'm getting back on the horse, or rather, back on the cow.

So, here's my plan as of today.
1. Increase the calcium intake to 1500 mg a day.
2. Do stretching exercises every day to help with flexibility and balance.
3. Do strength training exercises 3 times a week for, duh, strength.
4. Take a walk every day, outside whenever possible to also boost my vitamin D.
5. Portion control - and that's where the Sonoma diet comes in.

Okay, that's about as much change as I can successfully handle right now. Oh yea, those eight pounds I've gained over the course of the two trips brings me to a whopping 248. I never expected to see that number again in my life. Hubby is small-boned and needs to gain weight. We look like Jack Sprat and his wife. Not fun.

So, yes, Scarlet, tomorrow is another day, and guess what? Tomorrow is here!

God bless -

Marcy Jo - I have the stress diet too:D I discovered that my new plan for housecleaning is helping me lose weight - go figure. I decided to spend half an hour cleaning everyday right when I get home. That is normally the time when I snack the most, so now I am moving my body instead. I have lost 2 pounds this week and my house is clean!! We'll see if I stick with it.

Marcy, this reminds me of something our preacher said not too long ago. It was overcoming bad habits. He said we need to not just say we're going to quit doing something, we need to replace it with something good. Otherwise there's a vacuum and the old habit will get sucked back into our lives. I think it's the same way with exercising. I still find myself saying, "I need to this first" or "After I do that I'll exercise." I'm working on figuring out what things are in my life that I'm making more important than exercise right now. They must be more important because if they weren't, then I'd be exercising, right? So I think it's not a matter of adding time, but replacing it. Having said that, after my next post I'm going to go.......................exercise!

Scare me! I thought I just lost that whole previous post. Whew! it had only jumped to the next page.

TA DA! I have lost 3 pounds! I lost those three between yesterday morning's weigh in and today so I'm not sure if they'll stick but it gives me hope. I am now the same weight as when we came back from our first trip. Five more to go and I'll be back where I started before all the traveling began!

I got on the Sonoma train this weekend. Did menu planning last night and had my 1-cup bowl of cereal and milk (50/50) this morning for breakfast (along with my supplements). Tomorrow I go grocery shopping.

Off to exercise...............

Andrew and I are getting gym memberships this Christmas =) then this weight will go I hope. I used to love to bike before my eyesight got so bad. I will be a cycling fiend! This will be fun I hope. I haven't gone because I get panic attacks in crowds but I am going to go any way. Wish me luck.

Annika, I will pray that you fall in love with the gym. I would love to go back to the one I was using last year but I just don't want to travel that short of a distance every day and put the wear and tear on the car. Plus I have plenty of exercise equipment here if I would just use it. Having said that, I got fit really fast and really enjoyed working out on the machines. Plus the electric treadmill was a really good one so I was able to walk longer on it than I can on mine (which is non-electric).

Thanks for the link too. I'm checking it out now.

FYI: Did the stretching exercises this morning. Will do the upper body weights in about an hour as I just finished eating the leftover wild rice soup from last night's supper. Didn't check where it fits on the lunch portion guide - not enough veggies, I'm sure. Next time I'll add some. I think I'm also going to swap the lunch and supper portions so I'm not eating as much before bed.

God bless -
