Diet that makes me so adverse to the idea... Or maybe,it is knowing that I "have to" causes the aversion. Sure I have heard everyone say... "well it isn't a diet it is a "lifestyle change".......and you might think that would be enough for me to jump on the bandwagon. Or seeing myself in pictures would motivate me to do something, or feeling limited in what I feel comfortable doing would be enough.But truthfully... hmmmm... Not so much! Sure I have those moments... but for some of us that struggle with weight issues it isn't as simple as just loosing weight. It can be quit complex as we may be dealing with stress issues, health issues, or emotional issues (which can sometimes be the root cause of the protective layer we carry). Some of us eat right.. I am easily at 80 percent organic at this point.. So I need to learn to move more, look at portion control, (did I say move more?)...........

In my case it isn't because I don't have the knowledge... not to toot my own horn, but.............I HAVE the knowledge for sure...10's of $1000's of dollars worth of the best knowledge that I think money can buy..........on the topic. And MAYBE you can have TO much Knowledge... you know... when all it does is take up space between your ears.I have so much knowledge at this point... that I can actually talk myself out of ANY "life Change Plan".........Now how is that for full circle?

I have shelves lined with brilliant Doctors' research papers, and books and medical journals... Doctors that are main stream, doctors that are integrative and those that are holistic and those that are way out there..................I have set in lecture halls and at the feet of brilliant minds... I have had blood drawn and pee'd in a cup......had my eyes looked into, and reflexology, ALL GREAT ways to go.......

When my boys came home from basic training I said, "well if I had a "drill sergeant", I would look fabulous too..Of course my hubby pointed out.. that if I had a drill sergeant, I would Probably be spending 25 to life in the state facility for bring harm to the poor chap bossing me around. But as I watched my boys come back from basic training and thought "dang"...........I mean they didn't have any fat on them going in..............but NOW... dang..........double dang!! I was so jealous...I use to be hot.. and I pulled out the pictures to prove it.. of course Lucas ( who is now my least favorite son) abruptly stated, "ah MA, that aint you"...she's cute...........

I use to have that tight little body.........I know she is hiding in here somewhere.... recently I fell at the farmers market and cracked my pelvic bone..........Now that should have (to a normal person) been alarming............right? But truly all I could think of was YAHOOOOOOO!!!!! There is bone under all that "flab"... I couldn't have been more thrilled... and with every wince of pain... I thought... Yea... BONE!

So it isn't knowledge or lack of... and it isn't finding the right plan.... and it isn’t likely that I am willing to go to prison for murder (so the whole drill sergeant thing is out)... it is however, I have decided just choosing something and sticking to it.......... (Wow the $$$$ I could have saved)...

Worse yet..............what it comes comes down to for me...It is a matter of integrity... OUCH!!! Living (eating) my core convictions.......

So having read Jennifer Bove's blog this week... I blew the dust off of 2 books............1) healing with whole foods (Paul Pritchard) and 2) the Sonoma diet.......................

Now Mr. Pritchard's book is like the "health bible" to me... Perfect in every way............... but of course in my own true fashion (looking for a "way out" of this new self induced call for lifestyle change ... I found issue with Sonoma right away..... BUT.... NO... I am not going there... SO...

As I was reading through Jenn's blog... I thought, "Hmmm here is a major difference between Jenn and I.. Her view is from her boots... and mine, more threw the car window". So, things have to change...and I have to reach in and pull out a plan... and with Jennifer words prompting me; I did..........

Between now and July's Farm Fair... I am going on a journey........to Sonoma...... via the "Sonoma Diet book".........My home is becoming all things SONOMA........I have literally bagged up all my "other" diet books and loaded them into the car and they will now grow dust on the local library shelves............Not because I think they are bad... truly, Most of the would work, if I chose to "worked them". SO.......................

Here I go.. Anyone want to join me? After all it isn't a diet... it is a "lifestyle change"... and really who doesn't need that every now and again...............? So why not "in" Sonoma?

Awesome post! Doug and I both were wishing we could snap our fingers and find our way back to health.

Overall I think our diet is fine (could use more Organic, but all homemade) but we need the movement! So my challenge will be to get off my big cushy green behind (I mean couch) and get moving!

Wow, Rene, you are on fire, girlfriend! Except for the part about having a "tight little body" (I never had that) your story could be mine. I'm eating so much healthier than I did just a couple of years ago. Although getting in enough fruits and veggies is still a struggle, even that is getting better. But the exercise..........let's just say I'd be in the cell next to yours.

Exercise is crucial to a person's health. You can eat the healthiest fare possible but your body will still deteriorate if you don't give it a good physical workout. Like buying a new car, doing all the required maintenance but never taking it for a drive. It will rust. The same with a body that doesn't get a good workout. So...........

After we get back from this vacation I'm jumping in the boat with you. I have the Sonoma Diet cookbook (picked it up on the clearance rack at Borders this spring). And I've started doing the exercises in the Beautiful Bones without Hormones book I have. Pretty easy and simple and I'm doing them almost regularly. For doing such a minimal amount of exercise I feel quite a bit better.

So what's your exercise strategy? Do they cover that in the Sonoma diet book? Map it out here, girl. Hut 2 3 4! Hut 2 3 4!

Rene'- Back when I was young(er), I weighed 100 lbs soaking wet...and then I hit my 40's and the pounds crept on, no actually lept on me like fleas on a hound dog!

Anyway, I tried all kinds of diets and they were either so complicated or restrictive that of course I gave up on them. I too had an overflowing bookshelf of diet books, but most of them are either boxed up or have been given away so that maybe someone else can get better use of them than I did.

I eventually got up to 156 lbs, and I was so miserable with myself both physically and emotionally I decided that doing it on my own just wasn't working anymore. So, on a chilly October evening in 2005, I took myself and my battered pride to a Weight Watchers meeting. Fast forward to April 2006 I made it to my goal weight of 125 lbs, and have kept the weight off ever since!

Good for you Diana.. Hubby & I are working on our "eating life style" He has had type 2 Diabetis for 20 years.. He started taking insulin injections yesterday.... So we are motivated to Learn to eat better , not that we ate junk... just not properly.
I have tried so many diets & I hate them.... More fresh veg, more fruit. Whole grains. Staying out of the middle sections of the grocery store makes sense too.

I have to tell you, I love you gals more then there are words.

Diana, I cut and pasted your post and put it on my "dream board" it is my vision for myself thank you for sharing it with me... you will be my "beacon".My reminder that It can be done.

Karen ~ My Sister from another mother... there are days that I think we are the same person... HMMM maybe we are.....at the very least my "partner in crime".. we will be "smoking", in time for the BBB.

Marybeth~ thank you, I needed THOSE words... I am a very strong person, so not getting this under control has been a "chipper" for me. You know, one of those things that just chips away at your core... SO thank you for reminding me that I am strong enough to get this done....

TS ~ It is really just a Mediterranean Diet that teaches Portion control as well... Mediterranean is a common sense approach I think, One that anyone can "do". I will email you with more details...

Alee ~ One of the cutest little sisters anyone can hope for. I heard it said that going back to school and moving are some of the top 10 "stresser" a person can have so I have no doubt you will get back to where you wanna be....We will encourage other in the movement department. I have a t-shirt that askes "isnt climbing the walls excersise enough?" and truly.... It seems like it should be...But since apparently it isnt.. I will have to move more.

I invite you all to email me and "BUG" me as much as you want... and I will keep you all posted....Maybe I will post a before picture later tonight.. Just too.... you know... look back on later..............Diana... 125 WOW... my goal is 135....So today is "the" day.................I am in "Sonoma"....

I'm thinking SONOMA should stand for "Sisterhood of _______." My mind is too full of things left to pack to finish it right now. You girls go for it and I'll check in tomorrow morning.

Hey, does running around the house packing count as exercise? I am taking my exercise bands and hand weights on the trip - and I had it on my list before this post!

This morning I got up and did about ten super sit ups (Nora sat on my chest while I was doing them. Weight resistance!) and then I struggled through another 10 immediately afterward. I will give it a few minutes and then do more. Yesterday I did 15, waited a few minutes, and then did another 20. So staring out with 20 this morning, I will shoot for 25 for round two today.

I am going to do some sit ups like this before each meal time. I know it won't flatten my abs exactly, but it will help the muscles that hold in my gut get stronger, which I really need. They are all still stretched out from having Nora!

I also noticed yesterday that if I support my mid section with my core muscles and walk with good posture, my gut and rather large behind are less noticeable. And it is how we are supposed to walk any way. I think a lot of my problem is not treating my body how it needs to be treated (not enough water drunk, not exercising enough, and not using good posture)

I am also planning a big walk with Nora today. I want to get out and exercise!

I love that about you, you can jsut set your mind and do it..... you go girl!

I got up and went for a walk.... in the rain..... and got out the old "body ball"... Apparently I don't know "where my center is"... because I was bobbing around on the thing like a beached whale...But I am committed to walking,doing core secrets and Winsor Pilates, I love to dance so I might add a little of that in as well.....................

Of course it is my mind that gets me in the most trouble... IN the Winsor Pilates video I have it is Daisy Fuentes...........and really, OMG!!! her body is so amazing.. and then in the Core secrets it is Brooke Burke.......I am NEVER (even on my best days) gonna be a Brooke Burke.............So I end up having some very interresting conversations with those poor women.. good thing they cannot hear me...Off to plan my day in Sonoma~

Rene', you are hilarious! I mean the way you told your story was great. I am basically the same. I used to get the looks from the guys and it felt good. Now I'm just another 50 year old "granny". I am also full of the "knowledge", but where does that get you if you don't apply it to your life?

So I need to get up and get moving more. Although lately I have been SO busy. I hate being so busy. I have no time for me anymore. I run from my friend's parents, feeding them and checking on them, to town to check on my 91 year old friend and taking her to the doctor, then coming home and running around here feeding animals, I am exhausted. I still have not caught up on sleep from my trip and the 3 hour time difference, not to mention the time change that takes me 3 wks. to get over.

I weigh 220 lbs. now and I would LOVE to just be able to get back to 160. I am tall and big boned, too, so it really does not show. But I can tell. And I don't like it.

I am ready for a change. I do eat good when hubby's here, but most of the time, it's just me. So there goes the not eating right part for me.

I am right there with ya'll, girls. We can encourage each other! Thanks, Rene", for this post.

Thanks Kris, I have found that I am and acquired taste. Not everyone appreciates my sarcasms... which is fine I guess...

Yea, I turn 46 in a couple weeks............I clearly remember telling myself at 40, that I needed to get my act together.... Not sure where the other 6 years went... UGH! But I have to say I like it here in Sonoma... it is easy, do able and I don’t feel.......like I can’t have something I want. I shared my "body ball" story with some of my girlfriends last night who of course "caught the visual" and died laughing (WITH me I am sure). And based on their stories, I am not alone, so I will stay with it.

I found a "Sergeant" in the way of my 21 year old son's DOG (Kiani)... who now that I have taken him for walks, seems to "INSIST" on it twice a day, and the only way to "SHUT HIM UP" is to walk the thing.... SO I have dubbed him Sergeant Barker. I swear this animal is not a dog at all. He knows things..................

I have discovered WHY I haven't done a lot of "exercising" in the past.... 'I DONT LIKE IT". I know that we aren't supposed to admit that, but truly, I don’t like it... I don’t mind the strolls with the dog... watching nature and breathing in the fresh air......clearing my mind and just being as my mind creates stories and things I want to write about............I love that... but I mean exercise...you know put on the tights, and blow the dust of Jane Fonda or Richard Simmons.... I just hate that.............I use to play softball before I got sick, and that I loved.... and I was really good at it.............and I LOVED volleyball and was good at that... I think it was the hitting that was therapeutic .

I never understand my girlfriends that run, and come back saying "oh I feel so invigorated", and like I have so much energy... Gees, I am more like... "Someone call 911 while I go take a nap"....... I did hear that the high school gym is opening up for community volleyball so... maybe I will go and see if I like that again........

Anyway... Thanks for appreciating my odd little sense of humor

Honestly, you should just right a book! You are so right on it. I HATE exercising, too. Yuck. Hate to sweat and get nasty, unless it's in the garden for totally different reasons, like for food and all. So I'm with ya there. I do love to walk outback of our property. It's beautiful there. I take the goats and dogs with me.

But really, someone needs to do a farm girl workout video. It is hard work and fast paced, too. Esp. when pigs are running you down for their food or a couple of calves pushing me around. That's like a workout.Shouldn't that count? I mean really. it's hard work. Oh, and carrying around 50lb sacks of grain, too. Which I need to get 350lbs. out of the back of my Trooper right now. And carrying 5 gallon buckets of veggies and compost and manure. Geeze, I don't need to go to a gym. I have one right here. Also buckets of pig feed I need to lift up over my head and run with.

OK, I've just decided I'm really inpretty good shape for a 50 year old. Never mind!

Hi Ladies!

In the effort not to be a blob for the BBB... I have been watching my portion control. Tonight for dinner I heaped rice on my plate. Stopped. Looked at it. And put 3/4 of it back in the pan. Doug has served me dinner a few times and I have gone and put some of it back. Last night he was a bit worried. "Didn't you liked dinner? You hardly ate any!" But when I explained to him that I was watching my portions he was really happy :D

Portion Control is a BIG deal isn’t it. That has been a great challenge this week for me. Just being conscience of what I am eating. I am journaling too which helps, I can go back and go... "Oh yea, I did eat that"... Hmmm!

Alee, I love that Doug is supportive. Tom doesnt mean NOT to be, but when I "de-junk" the house he tends to do more "Shopping"... UGH!

Hey, ya'll should try this great salad. It's spring lettuce, spinach leaves, cranberries, pear, walnuts or slivered almonds, Gorgonzola cheese and raspberry vinegret dressing. It is so good and very healthy. I'm having it for lunch today.

I'm thinking of trying belly dance class, I don't like exercise either, and I certainly have the belly part for it. I have found several sites on line with Sonoma type recipes, so I am going to give it a try if possible. If I have time to do more then eat and run, which I think is a big part of our societies problems with weight...that and I'm hypothyroid and 48, so losing any weight is hard work. Diet is Die with a T heehee

I have thought about the belly dancing too.... We do have a dance studio and I was thinking about seeing if they would be willing to do some kinda of latin dancing... I love all those as well.

There was just a thing on belly dancing on the documentary channel tonight. Maybe it'll come back on again. I love to watch dancing, but it just wears me out. I dance with my grandkids and I'm all huffin' and puffin' but it sure is a good workout.
