i was roamin' with my camera this morning .. and smiling at my kitchen .. SNAP! SNAP! SNAP! .. and i do have a handfull of 'new friends' on my 'true friends' list ... soooo .. here are a few pics i wanted to share. xoxo

some (MOST .. but not ALL) of my antique cast iron collection.
i was talking with a dear friend last night (that would be you Miz Grace from Colorado!!) and she asked me if i 'cooked' with these. well .. mostly, when i DO cook .. it is to WOK up some chicken and fresh veggies .. and i use a 'new' wok for that. but when i get to makin' a stew or chili or cornbread
.. i use my olde pots and pans. have lotsa' grey enamel (you can see the corner of some of them in the photo below in the upper right hand corner). I LOVE my CROW that has always perched on top of the stove since moving here!

isn't that a neato-o stove backsplash!! it's just a framed picture
with one of my FAV sayings:
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE ... LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED

these treasures sit a-top our fridge

one of the 'open shelves' above the kitchen counter

my deeeeeeeelicious step back cupboard with some of
my yelloware! the wonderful white bowl and pitcher
.. i got from very special friend marti .. i always think of
her and smile when i see it!

here's the other open kitchen cupboard .. with my
love for 'color'!

i roamed outside to take some 'frozen moments' in time.

bird windchime that hangs from one of our birdfeeders.

this is .. who else .. but THUMPER .. he sits in a stone birdbath .. which i think 'might' have been an olde well.

one of the last tomatoes of summer.

will share more photos soon as i continued my 'walk about'.

xoxo, frannie

Thanks for sharing your walk about photos, Frannie!! Love the top of your 'frige!! Mine is just a jumble of things. Maybe I need to decorate my refrigerator so that things don't get tossed up on top of it. :)

made my morning vigil to the 'tree house' to send up prayers ..
what a peaceful place. i think this is my mos' fav place to be!
jus' talked to miz kathy .. she just got back from a FOUR day antiques show in OHIO. kathy and krew will be here next monday to put on the roof! (i'm gonna' MISS seeing the SKY through that rooftop .. BUT .. hank and i took our hands and 'shaded' where the roof will be .. and looked all about .. and on three sides .. you feel as though you are IN the tops of the trees! AND .. the roof will keep off the rain! and will be a wonderful 'reflector' of candlelight at night.

OH .. i walked from back porch to base of tree house .. it is about 80 steps!

THIS .. is the 'path less travelled' .. i have not often gone
up here .. but this lovely, sunny clearing is just before you get to the treehouse.

signs of autumn

what a lovely sunny spot .. i sat down here for awhile .. just closed my eyes and held my face to the sun. soooo peaceful!

this is looking toward the trees .. i've got to come up
with a name for this lovely place! (Sunshine Hill maybe?)

another view .. i think i'll bring a quilt and a good book
here from time to time!

tucked into the woods on Sunshine Hill is a sweet
remembrance of a former beloved kitty. (not ours ..
this has been here before we found our heaven on earth).

i know that another former owner brought THEIR
kitty's ashes and scattered them here too.

sunshine and shadow

oh my .. i've had this little dolly house for many moons .. it has now found a resting place in the 'burn pile'. I KNOW .. mayhaps i shouldn't .. but i'm going to save it for a very special time and send it's smoke curling towards heaven.

i love these signs that i made and hung on the side of
the SCHOOLHOUSE.

xoxoxo

the JANE issue! went to town to take some treasures to my antiques booth .. and THERE IT SAT .. on the desk .. the JANE issue .. that i had missed!

i 'borrowed' it .. and went to our adorable town 'Heritage Garden' .. sat in the sunshine on a bench that the WOMEN of the garden club built .. and skimmed through!

i was thrilled with all the victorian 'unders' ...

NOW .. i have always had a penchant for frilly pristine white victorian underoos! I know my heart belongs to PRIMITIVE .. but i absolutely cannot pass a booth filled with these fripperies without stopping to touch and ohhhh and ahhhh!

When we lived in Colorado (i was a wee slip of a woman in her early 30's!) .. i started my 'collection' of PantaLOONS .. PantaLETTES .. Petti-coats .. Nighties .. Camisoles .. and other lovelies from the Victorian era!

I was once in a 'mountain-side' antiques shoppe and discovered some calf-length undies with wide intricately sewn lace .. but the BOTTOMS were missing! The shopowner explained to me that it was sometimes quite difficult to 'maneuver' all those petticoats and heavy clothing .. to UNPIN .. and 'do biznezz' without getting a good 'soaking'! VOILA .. bottomless (we'd say crotchless today) undies were born!

As i was high stepping to get into them .. the shopowner told me to wait a moment ... to hold both arms out at my sides .. so that i resembled a lower case " t " ... i obeyed .. and she took them from me .. and slipped one LEG onto my left arm .. then t'other leg onto my right arm .. came around and tied the 'upside down' waist .. around my waist in front .. and OH MY .. miracles of miracles .. i was wearing the cuuuuuuuuut-EST 'victorian JACKET' i'd ever seen!

Well .. needless to say .. i was quite the talk of the mountainside adorned in my victorian slip for a skirt .. my victorian cammie .. my vicotorian underoo JACKET .. and 'bottomed-out' with my stripy-leg warmers and mountain boots!

i went EVERYWHERE in them! and added and added and added to my collection!

i asked honey hunk if i weren't just the mos' TRES CHIC mountain woman he'd ever seen!

he cocked an eyebrow in my direction and replied: THAT ... or ... you will be chased by men in white jackets weilding a big NET!

my regular physician that we see for 'yearly check-ups' called me today .. he told me NOT TO WORRY .. he repeated what i've heard from a couple other doctors:

ALL doctors would choose 'this one' to have .. if they HAD to choose one!

he said my type is VERY slow growing .. and can be zapped with removal of the thyroid and a little follow-up 'iodine' .. he says he has had patients that had IT for YEARS and died in their 80's from something else completely!

he says some actually OPT to wait and just keep an eye on it! ... THAT will NOT be my modus operandi!!!

oh lordy! i'm not WAITIN'!!! he told me i had one of the best endocrinologists .. and he knows the reputation of the louisville surgeon and highly respects him. he says i am in very good hands. and NOT TO WORRY!

i asked him if he thought i had done damage by waiting so long to have it 'tested'. he said no .. that the size mine is (i read him the report) is just about to the size where they start addressing it. LORDY! i even asked him if he thought i could wait until AFTER our October 11/12 gathering. he told me i could go on vacation this autumn .. enjoy christmas and do it NEXT YEAR!

BUT .. that i should do what my Louisville docs recommend! I do hope that they both say it is perfectly safe for me to wait until after October 11/12. but again .. i will do what THEY recommend!

he says he has never had a patient ... well you know ... 'expire' from it!

now .. i don't think he was just trying to make me 'not scared' .. cuz' i was ready to leave this doctor and find another one .. because he ALWAYS scares the beeejeeezuz outta' me when i get my checkups! he usually sends me (and hank too) .. here and there for this test and that test.

while i was sure we were making house and boat payments for every specialist in campbellsville ... i have been told that he will NOT let ANYTHING slip through the cracks .. sooo .. i will surely STAY with him and have WHATEVER tests he recommends to me in the future .. and RIGHT AWAY!!!

it's all about staying on top of things and .. my dear friend and i were talking last night that we're like 'vintage cars' .. the older we get .. the more 'maintenance' we require!

he also told me that he has never had a patient who had a 'recurrence' with the type i have. (oh lordy! let that be ALL that's in there ... IF that has to be in there!)

i've gotten so many wonderful e-mails and cards and prayers going heavenward for me from you dear friends. several friends have even told me that THEY or family or friends have gone through this same thing .. and that they are ALL o.k. many years later!

oh gosh .. i'm trying to remember what else dr. hinton told me .. but mostly .. it just made me not AS scared! (not to be confused with i am NOT looking forward to it all though!

ha! i told him that now that my daddy is no longer here .. that HE is my second most favorite man on this earth!!!

he said he and his wife are taking a vacation to the bahamas soon .. and that if HE had it .. he would surely wait until they returned from vacation. i told him i thought HANK should pay for their vacation cuz' he helped me not have a 'heart attack' before the sun rises tomorrow!

well, kiddos ... i'm waiting for the next couple months to come and GO .. and feel fine and fit and totally healthy ..

please know that you are ALL in my prayers and for those you love who are ill or sad or in need of god's loving arms around them! and i ask for your continued prayers too!

oh lordy! i remember when i worked for the federal public defender in denver .. one of our attorneys said that when someone goes to jail .. they usually 'come to jesus'!

i guess the same is true for illness!

i adore you sweet friends .. be back in touch with you tomorrow night .. hopefully my 'bouncy' little TIGGER self! xoxoxo

Dear Frannie, Ever since I joined the connection, I've enjoyed your posts as most favourites. I haven't been able to spend much time sitting here reading everything lately, but I was finally able to catch up. Not only do I live near where you started out, I just realized that I live less than a mile from "Cabin Creek" (Maryland, of course!) It has been a special place for me for a long while. I took pictures of it recently and when I reviewed them at home, I got the "connection", lol. I have every ounce of belief that you will overcome this little obstacle in your life. Healing is more about attitude and belief than anthing else. And since, I, even without meeting you in person, believe and know, that you will knock the socks off whatever you are facing, know you will. I for one can't imagine a world with out "Cabin Creek - Kentucky".
Keep it going, girl!

last night .. i roamed to the treehouse .. and in one day .. we have a beautiful carpet of golden leaves on the floor! our trees are shedding their leaves early this autumn .. and oh my! as i sat there and looked into the sky .. through the trees .. NOT A LEAF WAS BREATHING! it was so still and calm .. and i swear the soft grey sky had just settled into the top branches of the trees. except for passing birds overhead and their occasional 'tweets' .. it seemed the earth stood still. what a sweet moment in time.

Frannie, I just read this thread and I'm so sorry to hear about your thyroid. I'm not always on the forum, so I'm just learning about this now. I'm glad to hear that it is very slow growing. Once it's out, you'll be fine....I know it! I had a co-worker that I worked with about 15 years ago, and back then he had thyroid cancer. He had it removed, and he's just fine. In fact, he now teaches work related courses and I see him every now and then...he looks great and has no problems. You are strong and optimistic and you have a lot of people behind you in their prayers and thoughts....me included!

just gittin' home and checking messages! thanks to all of you who have said prayers and encouraging words to me!

and CHIS .. i am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!! i will be in louisville on October 10 picking up some gurlz .. let me know when your plane comes in .. and you can pile in my car and head from Freedom Valley too! (i'll get with you on the times the other girls are arriving .. it is about an hour and a half drive to the airport ..sooo .. i can only make one trip). they are returning on Monday, October 13 .. and afterwards .. i have an appointment to get 'pre-op' tests dones (blood/heart/chest) in Louisville. I think all the other girls will be leaving either Sunday or Monday. Hank returns from California on Monday .. sooo .. i'm looking forward to ten days of rest before the big "O".

well .. here's a little note-ette that i sent to my 'true friends' list of gurlfrenz .. wanted to post it here too:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

well, ya-ya's ... i had my doc appointment today .. set the date for the big "O" ... October 23 ... 7 a.m.!! (you jus' know i'll remind you from time to time for prayers to continue).

this doc pretty much said all the same things that my other two doctors told me. said he'd NEVER had a patient 'head for heaven' over this one! he even said that there is a possibility that this sucker has been in there for FIFTEEN YEARS!!!!!!!! (but not necessarily .. he was showing me how slow growing this kind is!) said MANY people actually get this and never know it!!! but ... said since we KNOW it's in there .. let's get it OUT! (i'm gonna' ask Dr. Self about this 'many people' statement!)

he said it is small (i have one on the other side which he said he is sure is the 'c' word too .. says that often happens ... i actually read on the internet that it is usually just one side .. but i'm not gonna' get all wrapped up in worrying about what i read on the 'net'.) oh gosh .. what else did he say? (they are too small to feel) ... that quite a few 'young' people get this!! that there are three complications that can go wrong (mostly having to do with bleeding, cutting vocal cords and one other that i can't think of right now .. but he told me that the chances are 1 in 500 of any of those happening. (hank assured me that car accidents are that and more!) hmmmmmmm .. was THAT supposed to be comforting? showed me about how big the scar would be (not as long as i had imagined!) AND .. it will jus' melt right into my 'neck wrinkles'!

he said he was pretty sure i was going to be o.k. i shot at look at him and said "PRETTY SURE??????" .. i want you to be ABSOLUTELY SURE!!!!!!! ... i'm sure he was appeasing me .. but he smiled and said "absolutely". (hey .. i'll take what i can get .. even if i have to beg for it!)

needless to say .. i am NOT looking forward to this .. but with all this 'comforting' news from docs .. and your precious prayers and sweet sayings to me ... i'm feeling much better. i told hank today that i always try to put on a happy face .. but inside me .. i've sure had the 'scardies' from time to time! i'm sure this will continue 'somewhat' over the next month .. but i am soooo looking forward to having this behind me! And like a very dear and wise friend said to me in an e-mail this evening:

you cannot live in the past, or the future (especially the future because you can’t foresee it, but to just live in the NOW

OH .. AND .. i'm really excited cuz' he said it was fine to wait until after our 'gathering' mid-October! soooo .. gurlfrenz .. pack those toothbrushes .. and if anyone else who hadn't planned on joining us would like to .. i would be sooooo delighted!

well, afterwards .. we went over to Baxter Avenue in Louisville and had a deeeeelicious INDIAN meal .. i LOVE indian food .. all those yummy curries .. and oh my! that yogurt/cucumber 'dip' thingie ... i was eating by the spoonfulls!

then we saw TWO movies ... BOTTLE SHOCK
WELL WORTH SEEING (are ya' listenin' miz mimi!!!) HA! hank said 'this one will never plan in Green County!

here's a 'review' and behind the scenes true story of it: (skip through it if you wish .. and read below about the second movie (I REALLY LOVED THE SECOND MOVIE!) Friend Grace from Colorado recommended it!

A film based on the historic event that put California wine on the map -- starring Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman -- opens in Southern California.
By S. Irene Virbila, Times Restaurant Critic
August 6, 2008
"Bottle Shock," a new independent film based, very loosely, on the famous 1976 blind tasting in Paris in which two California wines came out on top, much to the chagrin of the expert -- and very French -- wine tasters, opens today at theaters across the Southland.

From the husband-wife filmmaking team of Randall Miller and Jody Savin (he's directing; they're co-writers and producers), the film stars Alan Rickman (Professor Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" films) as British-born, Paris-based wine merchant Steven Spurrier, who organized the tasting; Bill Pullman ("Independence Day," "Sleepless in Seattle") as Jim Barrett, the beleaguered owner of Chateau Montelena (which won for its 1973 Alexander Valley Chardonnay); and Chris Pine ("Carriers," "Just My Luck") as Jim's long-haired son Bo Barrett.

Filmed in the Napa and Sonoma valleys, "Bottle Shock" takes a romantic view of winemaking and the significance of that long-ago tasting, embellishing and heightening the drama for the screen.

Four writers took a stab at the screenplay, which in places reads like Wine 101 with the Spurrier character pompously opining that "great wine is great art. I am a shepherd . . . ." Hokey violin music playing in the background doesn't help.

I foresee giggles from the audience when Spurrier's fictional Paris neighbor Maurice, played by Dennis Farina, says he'll return to America when the country starts making wine as good as France's and Rickman lets loose the line, "No offense, but I don't see the imminent cultivation of the Chicago vine."

Still, the filmmakers manage to inject some suspense in the plot (which we all know ends with Chateau Montelena's Chardonnay winning over Burgundies of impeccable pedigree) by having Barrett refuse to submit his wines and his son Bo save the day by making an end run around his father.

Rickman is a hoot as Spurrier, though nothing like the actual man -- who is not at all a snob, though indeed guilty of having a tony British accent. Making the wine merchant a pompous ass obviously works better for the plot.

The sight of Rickman in a three-piece bespoke suit languidly dipping his hand into a bucket of KFC that sits beside him in the crummy car he rents to explore Napa Valley may just be worth the price of admission. He's equally hilarious tasting his first guacamole, or sipping Sauvignon Blanc out of a jelly glass.

Oddly, the film leaves out the fact that it was winemaker Miljenko "Mike" Grgich who made Chateau Montelena's winning wine, focusing instead on Grgich's assistant Gustavo Brambila, the son of a field hand who later opened his own winery. He's played by Freddy Rodriguez ("Ugly Betty").

It also omits (until the closing credits) any mention of the wine that triumphed over the French in the red wine category. That would be Warren Winiarski's 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon.

To inject some sexiness into the Napa winemaking scene of those early days, Sam, the fetching female intern played by Rachael Taylor ("Transformers"), who shows up that summer to work at Montelena is given to wearing fringed denim hot pants like a '70s Daisy Mae. And as Jim Barrett, the former L.A. lawyer who bought the property in 1969, Bill Pullman pontificates on viticulture and cellar techniques.

In one scene on his first reluctant day back at his law firm, he gets a call telling him his wine isn't ruined after all (you'll have to see the film), grabs a decorative sword off a wall, beheads a bottle of his Chardonnay and pours wine for everyone before high-tailing it back to his life at Chateau Montelena. The winery is going to make it after all.

In the film, everything gets wrapped up in a beautiful bow. In real life, Bo Barrett went on to earn a degree in viticulture and in 1982 became the winemaker for Chateau Montelena.

Winery just sold

AND ALSO in real life, the Chateau was just sold -- in late July, in fact -- for an undisclosed sum to Frenchman Michel Reybier, owner of the Bordeaux estate Château Cos d’Estournel. And so one of the wineries that first alerted France to the quality of wines coming from California has now been bought up by the French on the strength of the euro against the dollar.

The film was shot at several Napa locations -- including Chateau Montelena, Buena Vista Winery and Kunde -- and the premiere was held at Chateau Montelena on July 26. It also was shown at Sundance Film Festival in January.

In Southern California, Red Carpet Wine in Glendale recently held a tasting that replicated the one in 1976, and Duke of Bourbon, a wine shop in Canoga Park, is organizing an excursion to the ArcLight in Sherman Oaks this evening to see the film.

Hold on: There's yet another film based on the historic tasting in the works. It's titled "Judgment of Paris" from Clear Pictures Entertainment, and is based on Time journalist George M. Taber’s 2005 book of the same name, with a screenplay by veteran screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen, who owns Kamen Estate Wines in Sonoma. Reached by phone, Elizabeth Fowler, who is producing the film with Clark Peterson, said the film has not been cast.

To see the brief article about the tasting that Taber wrote for Time magazine in 1976, go to www.montelena.com and click on "Paris tasting."

"Last week in Paris, at a formal wine tasting organized by Spurrier," he wrote, "the unthinkable happened: California defeated all Gaul." Get this, though: "The U.S. winners are little known to wine lovers, since they are in short supply even in California and rather expensive ($6 plus)."

Those were the days.

GHOST TOWN ...

Movie review: Gervais a delight in 'Ghost Town'
By Sean P. Means
The Salt Lake Tribune

In any comedy about a guy who can see ghosts, there's always a scene where the guy is talking to a ghost - and the guy has to say something as cover to the people who look at him as if he's crazy.
Ricky Gervais does that scene better and funnier than anybody I've ever seen, which is why "Ghost Town" is such a bubbly and delightful comedy.
Gervais, the British comedian and mastermind behind "The Office," stars here as Bertrand Pincus, a misanthropic dentist in Manhattan who's dismissive of his patients, curt with his practice partner (played by "The Daily Show's" Aasif Mandvi) and rude to his neighbors - notably Gwen (Téa Leoni), an archaelogist and recent widow.
A mishap

during a routine colonoscopy left Bertrand technically dead for seven minutes, and now he sees ghosts - who all want him to help tie up the loose ends that keep them grounded. The most persistent ghost is Frank (Greg Kinnear), Gwen's adulterous husband, who badgers Bertrand into helping drive off Gwen's new fiancé (Billy Campbell).
Director/co-writer David Koepp - a veteran writer of blockbusters ("Jurassic Park," "Spider-Man") whose directing efforts have always been thrillers ("Stir of Echoes," "Secret Window") - tackles his first comedy confidently. He sets a smooth rhythm for the jokes, doesn't get too fussy with the ghost-life details, and gives his performers room to breathe.
But the charm of "Ghost Town" is in its star's hands. Gervais' double-talking turn as Bertrand, a morose Noel Coward figure in the body of Lou Costello, is consistenly hilarious and ultimately heart-warming.

O.K. ... there's two good films for you to go see!

FINALLY!! Someone who agrees with my lifestyle!!!

An interview with World renowned health expert, Dr. Ima Nomskal......

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it. Don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! . . . Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:
'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather an attempt to skid in sideways - Cabernet in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride!'
-------------------------------------------------
And . . . . .

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2 The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
CONCLUSION:
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

o.k. here's my P.S. take good care of that wonderful body of yours .. it's the only one you're gonna' get on this here earth (unless of course, we get to 'come back'!)
