Advice from a Singer Sewing Manual from 1949:
Prepare yourself mentally for sewing.Think about what you are going to do. . .never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates.
Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing. When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on . . .[If] you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should.

Boy--it's no wonder my sewing stinks! I don't get gussied up enough!!!!!
Oh my gosh! This one is right up there with my other favorite, "When your husband gets home from a long day at work, don't bother him with worries from you day, and keep the children upstairs in their room so as not to disturb him. Make him a nice cocktail."
Farmgirl Sister #80, thanks to a very special farmgirl from the Bluegrass..."She was built like a watch, a study in balance ... with a neck and head so refined, like a drawing by DaVinci"... NY Newsday sportswriter Bill Nack describing filly, Ruffian. http://www.buyhandmade.org/ |

Seriously! This was in a "married woman's handbook" that my great Aunt gave to me when I first married (in 2001)...CRACKED ME UP! Justin and I read it all night! It was all about how "rough" it is on a man having to be the provider and you shouldn't "worry" him with your vapid daily details. Keeping the children quiet and upstairs, out of sight, is a MUST! And don't forget that vodka tonic :)

How cute is THAT!?!!!I am totally a beleiver in getting all my chores off my list before I start sewing or crafting..otherwise I can't think and be creative because I have chores hanging over my head. I'd love to get my hands on a copy of that book " The married womans handbook". Sounds adorable!

I bet you can find the hand book at any vintage bookstore or even thrift sometime. It was written in 1940 and reissued in 1948 and 1955. My edition is the 1955 edition.

It reminds me of that 1960s song by Jack Jones, "Wives and Lovers" "Hey, little girl, brush your hair, fix your make-up. Soon he will open the door. Every day there are girls at the office and men will always be men...Wives should always be lovers too...run to his arms the moment he comes home to you..he's almost here..." Glory be! The burdens we put on ourselves in those days!

Rhonda - that is so funny! Thanks so much for sharing. This is probably why my mom was so hard on me when she taught me to sew. She was taught the way mentioned in your post! I sew in my PJ's!

That is too funny!!! I know that it sounds ridiculous, but the underlying idea is kinds true for me. I have a hard time sewing if my house is filthy. However, DH is lucky to get the clean dress and lipstick on a special occasion, let alone for everyday sewing!

Ha, Ha, what a crazy person this was to write that I cannot imgaine today's women doint that ; what with jobs , and family to take care of Sewing is suppose to release stress; but create it. I read some things of the past Like ; before your hushand came home put on a dress and tidy your hair and put on perfume Have the children neat , and treat him like a King in some cases I read, tee hee. pinkroses

I'm confused....
what shoes do you wear with that dress? Stillettos or bunny slippers?
I want to get it right before I start my next quilt.

Man, they would hate me, I just threw away my favorite night gown of 10 years. It did not have any hole but was getting quite see through. It was not keeping me warm so I just had to give it up. I thought my husband jaw was going to hit the floor. He said, something I thought was your burial gown...when its comfortable, I don't do change well...
