I want to do a quilt square exchange with my chapter and get into quilting, but I need to know a few things. How big is a quilt square? is is left raw or ?? is it to be lined? I know so little about quilts, but it sounds like a lot of fun, so I thought I'd ask before I really messed things up
Annika, I am by no means a expert in this area but I have done a few exchanges.. The square can be 9 inches to 12 inches you choice- just make a choice so everyone is making this same size square. The edges on the outside is left raw- as it will be sewn together with other squares. It will not be lined as it will be backed with batting and then the backing. hope this helps..
You are most welcome Annika. I love quilts and am new to quilting. I have done a few quilt squares for exchanges though. Have fun! Just take it one square at a time. I love quilting books that have the different quilt squares broken down to do one square at a time. So you can do a sampler quilt.
My favorite square is 8.5 or 8 1/2 inches. sometimes 12 is too big, I guess with me it depends on the pattern use. aAso depends if your making a wallhanging or quilt with the patterns. and of coarse, your perference.
It really depends on the type of quilt square. Ie :pieced, embroidered, crazy quilted etc. The size would be up to group. The other thing is you use 1/4 inch sewing seams in quilting. With more info I could better help you or lead you to sites. Hope that helps a little. In a quilting group it usually is pieced blocks and the size and block can both be determined within group but you may be able to choose block. So if you can give us a little more to go on ok.
